- This artist hack will save you 100's of dollars in wasted art supplies. By recycling cores into liquid pencils you will not only save your pencils the wear and tear of large backgrounds and bottom layers but you will use up every bit of your unusable colored pencils. Create new colors and put the stress of shattered cores in the past.

I'm loving all the Mad Scientist content lately! I love trying new concoctions and playing around with stuff!😄😄
I am having a blast with it too. Yes, I do feel like a mad Scientist.
I trust you've visited the the frugal crafter's channel. Mad science there too. Loving this content.
@@thebudgetbee9694 you would be correct in your assumption.😊 Love The Frugal Crafter!
Essentially you have replicated Spray Paint. A pigment, suspended in a solvent base. Depending on the type of base used.. it may show through and stain the paper.
As for getting the leads out.. its probably pretty easy to crack the barrels in half, using a hammer... instead of using a razor to cut them out. The wood is weakened greatly, by the soft core.
Another way, might be to microwave a small piece for 6 seconds... and push the center out, with a piece of coat hanger (this might cause a fire, if you leave the thing in for too long. Thus, a traditional oven / toaster oven.. might be a better option).
After the mixture is made... one might try passing it through a fine mister spray bottle, for an airbrush like effect.
yeah
.I would not want to use a microwave but heating in a toaster oven for a short time etc
I have never seen anything like this before. So what you did is foreign to me since I’m a somewhat newbie to coloring. I like to make a request, that is to make a longer video expanding the process you just did, because it was amazing, and some of the products you talked about I have not heard of. It would be greatly appreciated. Thank you 🙏🏽 so much for using your expertise in teaching us how to do new things. 💞💞👍👍🥰
I'm going to try this on my gold wax paste! I'm not familiar with rub and buff but I think some of the products used were - Daler Rowney - paint thinner, nibbie - used up small pencil ends, core - colored pencil leads.
Ok I KNOW this video is meant for coloring/ artistic purposes but you totally inspired the cosmetic scientist in me and now I want to see how I can use my old eyeliners and turn them into a gel liner because I hate sharpening eyeliners. I'll have to play around with cosmetic grade ingredients instead of art supplies but what inspiration. I've always thought about what if I pull out the color core in a pencil and then u made the base paste. I'm obsessed!
I was thinking of you these past few days, not knowing about your difficult time. So sorry to hear about your tremendous loss. What a handsome guy. Sending love and praying for many blessings your way.
Girl!!! Your creative juices are pumping!! I actually thought of this not long ago but hadn't tried it yet. Great minds DO think alike. Lol. And adding the mica.....brilliant!! Thank you for sharing!
I added a white pearl to one and it's amazing. I am looking for a pure iridescent mica. That's going to be sick! I have colored iridescent but I want one that is basically clear except for the shine. I may try some liquid mediums with it and see what I get.
Thank you!! I have dry pastels from my great aunt that just crumble when I try to use them. Beautiful colors I have not seen elsewhere so I have been loathe to toss them. I am going to try this!
If you take prescription medication frequently, or know someone who does, a fun life hack for containing paint is the used pill bottles!
If you want, you can even decorate a piece of paper and glue it to the sides. If you have orance bottles, like I get, you can't really see the colour. However, the liss have enough of a textuee that you could glue a circle of paper onto them and paint that paper. That way you don't only have the paint contained, you know exactly what colour it will be when it dries on the exact paper you use!
I store seeds in pill bottles and put tape the labels they come with on the outside. I never thought of paint.
I do something similar with my pencil shavings. I just pull out the wood and save pigment in a pill box and use a solvent. I'm not wasting that pigment those pencils can cost a fortune (poly chromos and Derwent) . Save the shavings from my water soluble pencils too. Same thing only with water. Works great.
Is there an easier less time consuming way to save the insides of the colored pencils, besides chipping the wood off of them?
@@j.m.england6828 I dont chip the wood off of them, I just wait until I need to sharpen them, and then when I sharpen them I do it onto a piece of paper. Take the wood out of the sharpening bits which is easy if you have a decently sharp hand held sharpener. then I pour the pigments into a pill box. Even if a little of the wood dust is in there it sinks when I add solvent. so I try not to worry too much about it.
I've been saving all my broken premier prismacolor cores knowing there must be a way to use them. Bless you and your creative heart! It's been so frustrating how easily since Premier bought them they now break! Thanks for saving us all money!
Lori you keep art interesting! I am loving these new videos and hacks.
I'm here for this
using products in "weird" ways etc and heck yes. thanks for sharing
This is sheer genius, honestly. I am going to do some experimenting myself. Wow,what a great idea, I have never seen anything like this before. Thank you.
Let it break down for about a week. I have a follow up tutorial coming this week on it. I am finishing a full picture.
You are an Absolute Genius!!!!
Great tip! I have lots of Rub n Buff that has separated, some has dried a bit, but now I know what to do with it if it dries up completely. Thanks!
See...these are the kooky, genius things we do...that's why I always refer to myself and other craft nuts, as 'mad crafters'!
Genius hack. Great science experiment for sure. Love it. 😀
Wow, now I don't feel like such a hoarder for saving nubs lol. Supplies are expensive and I don't like to waste products. You have created your own products. Well done! You are so inventive. I just found your channel and I'm hooked and sharing with my art friends. Thanks!
i actually did this my christmas of the SET of spectrum noir (allof them) because they must have used that box as a soccer ball. im glad you think its cool too.
YOU have the best hacks. THIS is awesome!! Keep the ideas coming!!
oh my goodness!! you are a magician!! I'm so glad I found your channel. Not only are you brilliant you have an awesome heart to share it with us.
What a fantastic idea and demonstration . What exactly is the solvent by Daler & Rowney that you used?
Yes i wandered too, sdon't know it, plus stuff like this is not buyable in my country
You are enabling me and I like it. This is a really fun series and and you have gotten me thinking outside of the box. Thank you!
This looks like a really useful tip as I have a number of dried up waxes that it would help me with, however, the info is incomplete. Daler Rowney is a brand so it would be helpful to know the actual PRODUCT of theirs is used to make this solution.
Fantastic idea! This lets u get an even undercoat instead of using alcohol markers! I love love love this! Thank you for sharing
I KNEW there was a reason I was saving all my broken tips...yes, awesome. Thank you!
I'm speechless. Wow!!!
Gonna save all the bits that break off and use them this way! Brilliant!
Amazing video! It seems like you know what you are talking about and it is so cool that you experiment and have come up with really cool art hacks! :)
I loved your video and your creativity. I wish you would have shown or described the product from Daler & Rowney that you used. You show it so fast… without it the information you provided is not possible.
Gorgeous idea. Thanks. I'll try some of those tips. Best wishes
I remember being a small child and watching my mama use Rub n Buff on ceramics. Especially if there was a pattern or something you really wanted to stand out...such as flashy edges on Christmas ornaments or other decorations. I always thought it was neat how that all worked. Of course then ceramics moved on to dry brushing...and then chalking. I used to do lots of these activities; ceramics, dried flowers, and any other crafting with my mama.
As children, my sister and I were put in kids ceramic classes on summer break from school. Mama would say it was to keep us using our creative minds while out of school. 💜🌷🌺
Brilliant.
Yoooooo, this seems like such a good way to recycle nibs!!!
Kinda wanted to try branching out into using pastels to lay down color for backgrounds. I'll have to try this eventually, though.
I like chalk pastels, keep in mind the oil pastels are hard to store. They never dry completely so they are susceptible to dust and grime. You need to well seal it with a pastel sealer or put them under glass.
Thank you for this tip!
Another great hack, proven and shown!
Wow that’s so cool! You’re a genius! Thanks for sharing!
Interesting, I have a ton of cheap colored pencils collected over decades. They aren't worth much to actually apply pencil to paper as they are usually too hard and just go on really poorly.
But I'm thinking this would work to create a liquid paint for backgrounds maybe.
That's what I am doing. If they are hard you have to turn it into dust and then really soak it for a few days. I am doing a demo now for my next video.
I'm so excited to try this. Thanks for sharing.
LOVE this!!!
Thanks!
So cool! Thanks so much for sharing, I'll definitely try this is in my new pieces!
Awesome! Thank you 😊
That was amazing! Thank you so much, Lori. I am not familiar with mica powder. Could you add a link to that product or to a longer video where you talk about it more. Ty!
Love your idea ! Thx 4 sharing.
Wow, that is so neat! =O
You are a genius!
I think that's a great idea! I wonder how the plastic will hold up over time though?
Great ideas! Thank you for sharing..
This is amazing because there's a product called touch up texture titanium white by Brush and Pencil, and it's damn expensive with the shipping!!! In Canada at least. It's just a white liquid color pencil mixture that you would use for highlights, because it's archival for fine art instead of using white gel pens or paint which is not archival. I wonder if it would work like that. Have you tried applying it ontop of a finished colored pencil piece, I would imagine the solvent in the mixture would just activate the layers underneath. Hmmm🤷♀
I found myself here accidentally (although fascinated) qnd have no knowledge of art and art terms. Please, what does archival mean in this context?
Hmm..interesting! Not sure about the nibbies for me…pencils that have a flat bottom will be used up by glueing them to a piece of wooden dowel…but I can see myself perhaps experimenting with doing this…maybe with pencils I don’t like that much. I also don’t get many tips breaking, but that is also a possibility for those that do…this got me to thinking too…got to try it and see…if my idea works…I will let you know!
That's what I was thinking at first. Pencils that feel scratchy or aren't as pigmented. I would imagine cheaper pencils work best as their binders are not as strong and breakdown would be easy. Arteza would probably work really nice because they break down in water.
Awesome! I can do this with my prisma stix so i can get paints.. 💖❤️👍🥰
That's a great idea.
This was so cool!!!
Very cool, I hate waste so this is great.
Excellent way to use up pencil nubs
THIS WILL SAVE SO MUCH TIME !!!!! Ty
HOLY. CRAP. Dear God I wish I had some sort of paint thinner right now omg 😩 I have SO many unused pencils I can do this with omg. I need to research homemade diy paint thinner recipes or something because I NEED to do this tonight. Like. Right now. You are BRILLIANT!!! I wonder if linseed oil would work? I have glycerin too... Hmmm 🤔 If anyone has any ideas please let me know!!! Thank you SO much Lori!! I was going to make more paint with my tie dye kit, but man, I really have been wanting to save those dyes for my DIY alcohol inks. And I'm broke from the pandemic so this hack is seriously a godsend 🙌🙌🙌
FINGERNAIL POLISH REMOVER?
@@BabciCathy acetone?
Omg I am gonna have to try this
Wait until the 2023 version comes out.
More please
OMG, my son breaks lots of tips, this is such a good idea, now it will make me laugh (and collect the tip) unstead of crying on the inside 😃👍🤭
I am at around 2 weeks in with mine and it gets better with age. The thinner will dry and it will turn to a powder that reactivates if you add a few more drops in it.
Love this tutorial
Wow! That’s awesome!
What would happen if you used the mortar and pestle on old eye shadow and ground it up and mixed that with the thinner?
Yves i Wonder???
Shadow is basically mica powder with binder.
Really cool ideas.
Very clever! Love it ❤️
1:06 what?!? Amazon keeps order records for 12 years...probably longer. 😳that is so creepy and scary and sort of extremely weird!
thank you for sharing this brilliant hack. I have a jar filled with nobs of shame, waiting to be recycled. 🤔
Beauiful. Thank u
Niiice, now we have a use for those nibbies! This will save time and money!!
Could you use Mona Lisa paint thinner? Would it have the same effect or does the Dowler Rowney thinner make a difference?
The item you used is called daler-rowney, but all I find is ink with color or paint, what did I miss?
I love these ideas. I save stuff like that all the time thinking that I will find a way to use them. This is perfect! Your brain is always busy, isn't it! Ha! Ha!
This is when you see most top notch artists get stingy with their best kept secrets of thee trade. Things they've found that work to make their art unable to be recreated! You are a genius! What a fantastic idea! I am so going to try tis. I have been trying Daniel Smith irridescent watercolor ground, ugh, clear gesso, gesso mixed with acrylic paint that I have to sand down and do more than one layer of. I have been trying EVERYTHING! Obviously. It's only destroying my sketchbooks and I have crappy backgrounds to work with which tear up my colored pencils or markers. It's been a sh show in my studio let me tell you.
I am definitely a new subscriber now. After that demo, I can't wait to see what other hacks you have in your library of videos! Thank you so much for sharing thus! Like I said, it's a breath of fresh air when artists help other artists. We must support one another. You're doing that, so I will absolutely be on board supporting your channel.
I love this, does it only work with wax cores or any oil/wax pencil? I LOVE this idea for backgrounds because as much as I am trying I am not liking all the neocolor 2 and inktense affects in water on my books (I wonder how their shavings would do in this solution, I think I will try it).
I used wax and oil. They both work but the oil takes longer to break down. Most of the samples I have done are only 2 days old and are looking better and better. You can also mix colors to create new things. I am now keeping a jar of broken tips so I can play later on. It also works faster if you pre crush them. Some of my samples I just threw in whole and they aren't half as broken down as the crushed ones. I am working on the demo today using them.
@@barbaralennon321 I am so trying this!
@@barbaralennon321 facts. Lol.
@@barbaralennon321 thank you for that idea.
So cool! Is the Daler Rowney paint thinner? I still don’t have any small pencils, but I have sets that I don’t care for 🤣, I’d have to get the mica powder
Bonjour j aimerais savoir c est quoi que vous utilisez avec les mine des crayon cassés un gros merci thank you so much
“pencils break up in Dallar and Rooney” unclear what this is, and apparently it’s the key ingredient in this hack?
Whats the liquid called? I will try it, but i dont now the name of the liquid she take
Interesting
Rub and buff is still around...u dont see it in stores anymore
Yes it is. In fact they have increased their selection of colors since I bought it long ago. Now other companies are making it too. Decoart has a beautiful selection including Red, Green, Blue and White.
I'm trying to do this myself but the mineral spirits I have aren't working what kind of thinner is Daler and Rowney? They do not have it on Amazon (I can't find it anyway) so need to find a suitable replacement.
What where you using to dissolve the nibbies?
First time viewer of your channel. You keep saying Daler and Rowney but didn't say what product. It wasn't listed under show more supplies so I did manage to pause at the right spot to see bottle. And yes I am one of those that has 10 year old rub and buff, or Viva decor. Thanks for the hack!
Could you please say what product was it? I still don't know.
Yes, what was that liquid?
She said Daler & Rowney low odor thinner. She also mentioned you can get it at Walmart. Hth
@@GHCDesigns thank you. ❤️ I missed that.
Could u use this with polymer clay, it has to be baked. ??the colored pencil with the paint thinner.
Are you talking about the metallic gold? That can be used 100% with Polymer clay after it is baked. I have done it many many times. Makes it look like metal.
Oh! I like you! This was great. Thank you. I'm a new subscriber, nice to meet you!
I like you too. Welcome

@@naticristellavi8236 Welcome Naticris. What type of art do you do?
Is the bottle of solution, gamsol? If not, what is it? Thank you.
No Daler and Rowney low odor thinner
@@ColorMyWorld Low odor thinner- I’ll remember this. Thanks for this nifty little tip.
Does this work with Gamsol?
I didn't try the brand Gamsol but I have mineral spirits. It works with that so it's the same with Gamsol. It works better with oil pencils while wax pencils works better with acetone.
Thank you!!!
Loving your channel by the way. There are plenty of colorist channels that give tips and tricks but you actually go out of your way to interact with your viewers so that you can share as much information with us as you have to offer and I just think that’s really awesome!
@@arianacopp4999 I would quit UA-cam if I couldn't interact with my subscribers. I learn so much from them. It makes it so much more fun.
I give up. What solvent base did you use?
paint thinner, but you can add a drop of iso alcohol. More explanation coming. I have a part 2 and I have improved the process. I am putting it together now.
Thank you.
Is the Daler Rowney low odor thinner the same thing as Gamsol?
No not even close. Daler and Rowney is acetone (nail polish remover) and gamsol is mineral spirits.
@@ColorMyWorld Thanks so much for such a quick reply. I am learning so much from your hacks. You have a brilliant artist's mind! 👍 😃 👩🏻🎨🎨🖍️✏️✨
I am using my phone and I cannot see what you are using to dilute with. What is it?
Think it’s paint thinner
What is the name of the liquid that you use?? I've got to try this.
You said who it was by but not what it was
Daler and Rowney low odor thinner. You get it at Walmart.
I bet u could let this stuff dry in a core mold too
does it matter if its wax pencil or not?
I did it with both but the wax is better. The oil pencil needs to be very crushed and you need to wait a few days for it to be good.
I just heard like 7 words I’ve never heard before
You went to fast what did you mix it with??????????????????
👍😊🌸
What was the solution you added to the pencil lead?
Low odor thinner
@@ColorMyWorld thank you
I didn’t understand what you mixed your crushed cores with with…
Daler and Rowney, low odor thinner. Any paint thinner will work. Use low odor. To spice up the texture use mica powder. I have sparkle and pearl. Both worked really nicely.
@@ColorMyWorld thanks. Is gamsol paint thinner?
@@gabinat I am not sure. It may be a mineral spirit. I find the fumes too strong, but you can try. You never know. I know you live in Canada so I don't know what your Walmarts carry. I get the Daler and Rowney there and it's very cheap.
@@ColorMyWorld thanks Lori! I'll try, Gamsol and if it doesn’t work, I’ll see what I can find at either my Walmart or local craft store.
Sooo..maybe its my age...but what the heck did she use
You're talking in a foreign language. I have no idea what that first tube you showed us was, and that bottle of stuff? What did you call it? Eventually, I realized you were saying turpentine, I think. Nibbies? I figured that one out. But that tube. Was it a type of paint? Or the name of a brand of paint? I'm loving the idea of dissolving colored pencils, I have thousands.
I’m so pissed at myself for throwing away MY 12 year old rub n buff!
I had pulled it out of the garbage!
