  • In this video I am going to take you on a deep dive into the world of colored pencils. We will discuss the difference between oil and wax colored pencils and how these pencils perform differently on sanded paper. I will also share with you my opinions about the top brands AND I will share with you an excerpt from my course, “Introduction to Classical Colored Pencil Painting.”

As mentioned by other viewers ,Lyra Rembrandt are great ! It was my first choice when I was on a budget .As I got more advanced ,I added Polychromos and axpected them to be better but there are just different.I love the more muted color palette they are also great for blending with solvent .They lay down easily and are very smooth. They are oil based but behave in some kind like wax based ones( if it makes sense ).Last but not least ; they are cheaper here in Germany than FC Polys .Prismas are hard to get and CD and Derwent's are expensive.I buyed afew open stock and the Luminance are great but im still using only the Portrait set of 20 combined with my Lyra which creates a beautiful color palette for portraits and animals without breaking the bank.I really appreciate your videos.I've learned a lot.Youre my favourite teacher for cp on youtube. Thanks a lot

Hey! I still haven't tried the Lyra Rembrandts … maybe a goal for 2024 :) If you love muted palettes you might love the Derwent drawing pencils? Have you tried those?

I was worried for you since a lot of people like to argue and fight over the Pablos being a wax or oil based pencil. I am glad it didnt happen. I like using polychromos regularly on Arches hot press watercolor paper but i prefer pablos as an oil based pencil on sanded paper like pastelmat. For wax based white please try the soft white Holbein pencil. It is the softest, most opaque white pencil, i have ever tried.

@@LanaGloschatArt Yes, I have both sets of 72 colors. I believe the watercolor version costs more than the regular ones. They can be found on Amazon and Blicks who also carry open stock. They are a decent midrange pencil but certainly not in league with Derwent Lightfast or F-C Polychromos. But, are the best choice if you can’t afford the higher tier. There is a Lyra blender pencil, also. Also, I want to thank you for your well researched videos. You cover material that others omit.

When I say oil based I just mean that it isn’t as waxy and that the % of oil is higher. In my experience pablos are less waxy and I would call them an oil-based, but the certain,up aren’t the consistency of an oil pastel or something like that.
