100% agree - you would assume that this would result in faces looking more asian and then you open the door and you have anime characters all the way 😐
This anime. There is a lot of whiteness in anime cause for some weird reason Asians want to be white. League needs to try to cater less on anime visuals and more to more traditional realistic visuals of characters based on the country or origin inspirations.
it's kind of wild how much of a difference a few small scars make on irelia's face. it helps her communicate her 'head of the resistance' role so much better. Even with her more unique and mature face in LOR she didn't quite bring the vibe her lore would have you imagine. I wish riot weren't so afraid of giving champions visible scars. I highly doubt people care about their impact on visual appeal as much as designers seem to think, especially when they're just added as a small detail on already conventionally attractive faces anyway
Yes this so very true - also people like Olaf should definitely look like he would have been stabbed 20 times and still keeps going, and I will not start with kaisa .. really happy you liked my take on her 😃🫶🏼
I love how u make them more mature , more women rather than girls, and I would playing them if they just weren't annoying anime girls but ehi that's what east want
Them all being over 20 (even akali is about 19) but all looking like 15 year old girls is always my biggest gripe. Some of them are fighters, grizzled and forged in battle and yet look like they never left their high class rich manors. I especially liked the scarred version of irelia's face.

Another quality banger. If Riot hasn't scouted you within a year from now, I'd have no clue what they're smoking. Love how you made them look more refined and mature, it really makes a major difference. Not sure if you kept the champions' canonical age in mind when designing these portraits, if you didn't, I'd recommend doing that extra bit of research. Awesome work as always, keep it up!

Here in brazil we had a video about the faces of the champions, not only the females because the quantities of skins with non-human face rised, the video said that the faces are similar because of riot's past events, the lucian skin, irelia face and/or seraphine appearance, that people entered in court against riot for the similar appearance, now we get smiling big teeth with no eyes, masks, and similar faces.
Aah I think I know what you mean - there was a model whose face looked similar to Irelia - if this would legit be the reason it would be absolutely sad! Really good interjection!

Super impressive; you're a great artist! I loved your designs for Ahri and Lillia the most, and I would love to see more vastaya redesigns from you if you are planning on/interested in exploring that. I feel like Sett and Nami especially have a lot of missed potential in their facial designs because riot was aiming more for conventional attractiveness than a visually interesting animal-human hybrid character.

riot concept art already shows their uniqueness in faces because people who create champions work there for a long time and trained to match the game vibe. The problem is that riot hires freelancers who just paint the same pretty face their entire life. Im sure riot artists might tell them to make some champions look less anime but its not worth it for them to redo the entire piece.
usually Riot tampers a lot with the artist's creative liberties when it comes to face features, you can really see this in some splashart processe's that the concept starts with clear features and then gets smoothed out
Yeah I think you are both right - depending on the artist it is possible that they paint a total anime el Classico - but The original mistwalker has a point because Ive seen the exact same thing a few times now - a distinct face being changed to look exactly what u mentioned alu - an absolute anime face. :D
This guy is a genius. You're in a very simple way and by yourself solving a lot of league most deluding designs. I really hope one day they will wake up and start making theirs champs original again before transforming in a mobile game, in the meantime, you're videos give us passionate, a lot of fresh air. Hmm. This isn't as good as I expected, although if you're European I can understand, and I otherwise think you did a good job of making the faces more mature. From the start, I see that your Akali design is closer to Chinese (esp. the side profile) than Japanese, which is her original inspiration. On the thumbnail I also see you using pretty much the same eye shapes for the three characters, and that they still have somewhat of that typical European League of Legends look. Keep in mind I'm not an artist, but I'm Asian, so I'm familiar with their facial features. I'll deposit my thoughts in the replies if I find any.

Glad you're being receptive of it, and keep it up! I'd say overall, my main criticism would lie in the eyes' orientation. Believe it or not, most of the time Asian eyes don't slant upwards, but often close to horizontal, and sometimes even slightly downwards. If you don't mind, I'd like to see extra sketches of different angles and emotions. Individually, Akali looked fine. I also liked the original Riot design since it's very consistent, even when they changed her to Korean in her KDA skin. Ahri and Irelia, I liked your interpretation. Karma, I don't even know what Riot wanted her to look like (her splash art looks like a black American, ffs). You did the best you could. Lillia reminds me more of a lion than a deer. Syndra looked interesting as an interpretation. Her base design though, suffered from the same problem as a lot of old champs like Karma, and thus lacked a much needed identity. I kind of liked Xayah's interpretation too.

@@ratlinggull2223 that’s true! But I’m not sure if their clan stems from Ionia - the lore only says(if I’m not mistaken) - they are vastaya and live near mount targon. Possibly we could go for south Asian influence and try something like this for her influence - but on the other hand it could also be inspired by other island people - I will definitely try some different things 😃

Even if someone here wanted that, in the end we all know that he's going to go in there, come up with genius ideas that in the end will take everything and turn it into a new generic character, and just see a lot of the initial concepts of various characters, they seemed so unique and different by the artists' imagination, and in the end he just became a standard character for the current Riot, he has a lot of talent but going to Riot is wasting a huge talent (sorry, I just took out my anger with these current Riot designs on comparison with the concepts they project)

7:20 all these look amazing, some thought, planning and effort to really make every one distinct while still looking like them in game. If you don’t mind I wanna add my thoughts too: Ahri looks good but I can’t unsee her looks like it’s Frida Kahlo cosplaying Ahri and that her hair combines with her eyebrows to make it look like a unibrow (which Frida also had) Akali is perfect and quite pretty to me Irelia is also perfect and just to point out more how massively inconsistent her splash art for skin are in almost every game. Karma is great, the eyes look really spread apart though Lillia just looks cursed (I’m sorry 😞) I don’t hate it, cranking up her deer characteristics is a good change. Just that it still has the human like structure of the face threw me off. Syndra is also very great, though the eye look far apart again (probably because they are smaller looking) but it works well for her. Xayah is pretty good too, don’t got much to say

God knows how long ive been staring at this piece and yeah, I think this is the best Syndra design ever. Its distinct and gorgeous yet still feels like her. Feels like this is her canon look. Love the hair, love the Azula inspo. Love it. After the face reveal from wildrift with the most hideous bangs, to me this is what she always supposed to look like. This is the face behind that crown. This is just HER. I would love to see a version with her headpiece tho😁 but still, just amazing. You literally updated her picture in my mind. If this will continue with other regions and champs i gotta be around. Subbed 🙇🏻♂️

I really wish they had like a core feature consistency control Rioter on the art team. Face shapes, skin tone and other elements are often lost in each iteration of a champions art year on year
This is a really cool video concept, I never really thought about how facial structures, different noses, mouths eyes, distance and etc. can impact a characters look and make them feel more humanoid, giving them beautiful but also unexpected features, watching through this video I actually got a few ideas for designing my characters. TLDR: This video inspires me to redesign my characters facial feautres and put more attention into these kinds of things Thanks
this is really good and artistic, i do hope tho that riot recognizes you soo much that they will change and actually care about the uniqueness of different champs. also if you see this. champions like shen have not really given an update in voicelines, skins and even a visual update, unlike his counter part zed rather than the previuos i hope that youd consider it
It's funny to see a redesign for Lillia, because she's never had the same-face problem that other champions do. Her eyelashes are always a dead giveaway that it's her, it's consistent across different media and works by different artists. Great job on the other characters though!

Aah wonderful! I tried doing this years back, but got overwhelmed by the sheer numbers. But hey, I can offer you a piece of advice I picked up in my attempt: look up the champion’s voice actors! Seriously, there’s so many beautiful, distinct ladies voice acting in this game. I’m still not over how much Funda Kayacık, Briar’s Turkish voice actress, already looks like her (if a touch less baby-fied).
For Ahri, I think it’s very fun to reference the “Fox-faced” or “Kitsune-Gao” look. It is a historical beauty standard from ancient Japan. Narrow face, close-set eyes, thin eyebrows, and high cheekbones. Pretty, fox-like, but also very different from the standard League of Legends face.

When I try to draw faces I look to normal people. Not as much models and more average people you’ll see. I do this because people around us can be the most beautiful and unique without being selected by a toxic standard. So I try to reflect that in character design.
Absolutely great take! I did the same for most of my time drawing - always drew my friends or people in trains 😃 those make way more interesting characters!

great video. I really like Ahri's nose and Karma's wide set eyes. When you get to Ixtal I'd love to see what you do with Neeko. I think the designer did a decent job with her large wide set eyes because it's similar to a chameleon however, the tiny nose and generic lips ruin it and make the big eyes just look like anime eyes. I think some of her other splash art pull it off well but then her Legends of Runeterra design has all of the problems I mentioned.

This is amazing! All the faces are beautiful and have become recognizable! I would like to give Xayah a sharp nose to emphasize the features of a wild bird I like Lillia'a vision, but because of her face, the hairstyle doesn't suit her, so I think a massive redesign is needed here. Although it is more pleasant for me to see her human face, but with the addition of deer features In the future, please pay attention to the problem of the face of Kayn and Talon It seems like Talon doesn't have a specific face, which is why they started giving him the face of Kayn and it's frustrating Thanks for the video!

I absolutely loved it! I wish that riot knew that theres a lot of different and unique ways to show women's beauty. I also wish that we'd see more variety in body shapes too (characters like Riven and Sej deserve some muscles imo)
I absolutely love this video, I am always excited to see your new content and am always asking why Riot hasn't tried to recruit you, I truly mean that. The only thing that even comes to mind would be Ahri, in all of her previous designs I liked her the most in the trailer for the ruined king game, with very sharp almost feline like features despite being canine and foxlike in origin. I guess it evoked a kind of foxlike cunning that I think worked much better with her design concept than her in game, which don't really highlight those qualities. She used to be a temptress like figure and that is really reflected in her eyes in the game trailer, but I dont see that and the sharp design in her other designs. I'm no master artist so I was curious about what was going through your mind for her specifically as you made the choices for her face throughout. (I know you expained some of this in the video, I'm just wanting to know what you were analyzing and thinking about throughout the rework process).
@@natehansen3098 that is a good question, my first thought was creating something similar to her snow moon skin, this skin looks the most Asian and realistic to me but then painting her more I realized that it would be to similar to other champions. Especially Xayah was a character of whom i was sure that she would look too similar. That’s why I pivoted to include more of her sharp features in the nose and jaw are but did not went all in - ahri is definitely the one design I’m struggling with most atm. I think that one day I will make some sculpts of characters and then i will try to narrow it down to something that looks more like the picture in my head (something that can be soft but sharp at the same time😃 an afterthought: somewhere in a story of Xayah and rakan it is mentioned that vastayas appearances are tied to the amount of magic they come in touch with - I would love to have Ahri shifting between different states of vastayaness, similar to her spirit blossom skin 😃
Mostly I have some time on my hand before my internship begins and I got a system to work in place now(and I want that riot job or something similar one day 😄)
I absolutely love your redesigns! Seeing that you've taken inspiration from real-life women, did you know that there was a huge drama because of the Irelia Awaken face? People said that riot just straight up plagiarized the beautiful face of the kazakh model Aya Shalkar, and i definitely see it. Maybe you'd wanna look into that as well :D
Yes I stumbled across this when checking Irelia designs - Im Pretty sure the karma design I showed is also inspired by an existing person 😄 I suppose that for me it’s pretty fine because I just do UA-cam videos - but when doing animation or games the faces would have to be changed a bit more!

For a game that caters so much to its eastern audience, it amazes me how little effort goes into making its Asian-coded characters look, well, Asian.

Hmm. This isn't as good as I expected, although if you're European I can understand, and I otherwise think you did a good job of making the faces more mature. From the start, I see that your Akali design is closer to Chinese (esp. the side profile) than Japanese, which is her original inspiration. On the thumbnail I also see you using pretty much the same eye shapes for the three characters, and that they still have somewhat of that typical European League of Legends look. Keep in mind I'm not an artist, but I'm Asian, so I'm familiar with their facial features. I'll deposit my thoughts in the replies if I find any.

Glad you're being receptive of it, and keep it up! I'd say overall, my main criticism would lie in the eyes' orientation. Believe it or not, most of the time Asian eyes don't slant upwards, but often close to horizontal, and sometimes even slightly downwards. If you don't mind, I'd like to see extra sketches of different angles and emotions. Individually,
Akali looked fine. I also liked the original Riot design since it's very consistent, even when they changed her to Korean in her KDA skin.
Ahri and Irelia, I liked your interpretation.
Karma, I don't even know what Riot wanted her to look like (her splash art looks like a black American, ffs). You did the best you could.
Lillia reminds me more of a lion than a deer.
Syndra looked interesting as an interpretation. Her base design though, suffered from the same problem as a lot of old champs like Karma, and thus lacked a much needed identity.
I kind of liked Xayah's interpretation too.

@@ratlinggull2223 that’s true! But I’m not sure if their clan stems from Ionia - the lore only says(if I’m not mistaken) - they are vastaya and live near mount targon. Possibly we could go for south Asian influence and try something like this for her influence - but on the other hand it could also be inspired by other island people - I will definitely try some different things 😃

Even if someone here wanted that, in the end we all know that he's going to go in there, come up with genius ideas that in the end will take everything and turn it into a new generic character, and just see a lot of the initial concepts of various characters, they seemed so unique and different by the artists' imagination, and in the end he just became a standard character for the current Riot, he has a lot of talent but going to Riot is wasting a huge talent (sorry, I just took out my anger with these current Riot designs on comparison with the concepts they project)

If you don’t mind I wanna add my thoughts too:
Ahri looks good but I can’t unsee her looks like it’s Frida Kahlo cosplaying Ahri and that her hair combines with her eyebrows to make it look like a unibrow (which Frida also had)
Akali is perfect and quite pretty to me
Irelia is also perfect and just to point out more how massively inconsistent her splash art for skin are in almost every game.
Karma is great, the eyes look really spread apart though
Lillia just looks cursed (I’m sorry 😞) I don’t hate it, cranking up her deer characteristics is a good change. Just that it still has the human like structure of the face threw me off.
Syndra is also very great, though the eye look far apart again (probably because they are smaller looking) but it works well for her.
Xayah is pretty good too, don’t got much to say

God knows how long ive been staring at this piece and yeah, I think this is the best Syndra design ever. Its distinct and gorgeous yet still feels like her. Feels like this is her canon look. Love the hair, love the Azula inspo. Love it. After the face reveal from wildrift with the most hideous bangs, to me this is what she always supposed to look like. This is the face behind that crown. This is just HER. I would love to see a version with her headpiece tho😁 but still, just amazing. You literally updated her picture in my mind.

I really wish they had like a core feature consistency control Rioter on the art team. Face shapes, skin tone and other elements are often lost in each iteration of a champions art year on year

This is a really cool video concept, I never really thought about how facial structures, different noses, mouths eyes, distance and etc. can impact a characters look and make them feel more humanoid, giving them beautiful but also unexpected features, watching through this video I actually got a few ideas for designing my characters.
TLDR: This video inspires me to redesign my characters facial feautres and put more attention into these kinds of things

It's funny to see a redesign for Lillia, because she's never had the same-face problem that other champions do. Her eyelashes are always a dead giveaway that it's her, it's consistent across different media and works by different artists. Great job on the other characters though!

Aah wonderful! I tried doing this years back, but got overwhelmed by the sheer numbers. But hey, I can offer you a piece of advice I picked up in my attempt: look up the champion’s voice actors! Seriously, there’s so many beautiful, distinct ladies voice acting in this game. I’m still not over how much Funda Kayacık, Briar’s Turkish voice actress, already looks like her (if a touch less baby-fied).

For Ahri, I think it’s very fun to reference the “Fox-faced” or “Kitsune-Gao” look. It is a historical beauty standard from ancient Japan. Narrow face, close-set eyes, thin eyebrows, and high cheekbones. Pretty, fox-like, but also very different from the standard League of Legends face.

When I try to draw faces I look to normal people. Not as much models and more average people you’ll see. I do this because people around us can be the most beautiful and unique without being selected by a toxic standard. So I try to reflect that in character design.
Absolutely great take! I did the same for most of my time drawing - always drew my friends or people in trains 😃 those make way more interesting characters!

Thank you so much, I and many others have despised the same face and weird youngification (idk if thats a word) of specifically female champions. Not to mention how some of these champions are clearly modeled after certain real world ethnicities like ahri being east asian yet some splash arts making her seem white?

great video. I really like Ahri's nose and Karma's wide set eyes. When you get to Ixtal I'd love to see what you do with Neeko. I think the designer did a decent job with her large wide set eyes because it's similar to a chameleon however, the tiny nose and generic lips ruin it and make the big eyes just look like anime eyes. I think some of her other splash art pull it off well but then her Legends of Runeterra design has all of the problems I mentioned.

I absolutely loved it! I wish that riot knew that theres a lot of different and unique ways to show women's beauty. I also wish that we'd see more variety in body shapes too (characters like Riven and Sej deserve some muscles imo)
I absolutely love this video, I am always excited to see your new content and am always asking why Riot hasn't tried to recruit you, I truly mean that. The only thing that even comes to mind would be Ahri, in all of her previous designs I liked her the most in the trailer for the ruined king game, with very sharp almost feline like features despite being canine and foxlike in origin. I guess it evoked a kind of foxlike cunning that I think worked much better with her design concept than her in game, which don't really highlight those qualities. She used to be a temptress like figure and that is really reflected in her eyes in the game trailer, but I dont see that and the sharp design in her other designs. I'm no master artist so I was curious about what was going through your mind for her specifically as you made the choices for her face throughout. (I know you expained some of this in the video, I'm just wanting to know what you were analyzing and thinking about throughout the rework process).
@@natehansen3098 that is a good question, my first thought was creating something similar to her snow moon skin, this skin looks the most Asian and realistic to me but then painting her more I realized that it would be to similar to other champions. Especially Xayah was a character of whom i was sure that she would look too similar. That’s why I pivoted to include more of her sharp features in the nose and jaw are but did not went all in - ahri is definitely the one design I’m struggling with most atm. I think that one day I will make some sculpts of characters and then i will try to narrow it down to something that looks more like the picture in my head (something that can be soft but sharp at the same time😃 an afterthought: somewhere in a story of Xayah and rakan it is mentioned that vastayas appearances are tied to the amount of magic they come in touch with - I would love to have Ahri shifting between different states of vastayaness, similar to her spirit blossom skin 😃

I absolutely love your redesigns! Seeing that you've taken inspiration from real-life women, did you know that there was a huge drama because of the Irelia Awaken face? People said that riot just straight up plagiarized the beautiful face of the kazakh model Aya Shalkar, and i definitely see it. Maybe you'd wanna look into that as well :D
Yes I stumbled across this when checking Irelia designs - Im Pretty sure the karma design I showed is also inspired by an existing person 😄 I suppose that for me it’s pretty fine because I just do UA-cam videos - but when doing animation or games the faces would have to be changed a bit more!
