- In September 2020, we met Nightwish mastermind Tuomas Holopainen in Helsinki for an exclusive interview that was published in the first issue of our brand new (French language) magazine. Here are a few highlights of this chat.

A very fitting name.
While we see the surface, only when we are shown glimpses of what lies beneath, do we realise how deep someone goes. And Tuomas is one of the deepest thinkers I've ever seen.
Doesn't matter what Nightwish and Tuomas chooses to do. I will never stop being a superfan till I die.

Whenever I watch interviews with Tuomas he always makes me feel peaceful. I think it's his quiet calm demeanour reflecting back. He seems a genuinely nice intellectually deep person~

I will not hide my feelings about the music Nightwish has been creating... Tuomas, I just want you to know that all of your songs touch my heart very deeply! Every note literally pierces through my heart... Special thanks to you for Sleeping Sun, which inspired me to write one of my poems, and several symphonic songs were inspired by such songs as End of All Hope, Ghost Love Score, Slaying the Dreamer. The list can go on and on. You have planted many great seeds! The HARVEST is yet to come!!!

It could be a family thing. I've met his cousin who's writing horror books and poetry under a pseudonym. He, on the other hand, seems like the most pretentious person you would ever meet, but when the curtains close, he's a sweetheart.
He mentioned they're related in a passing sentence. You wouldn't guess it, unless you looked really closely at their eyes and cheeks.
A true artist that gave the best answer to the dumbest question about the old Toumas to the young Toumas. He is secure in his place with his answer.

Just listening to this at work and realized WOW!! WHAT A VOICE. Tuomas should be narrating movies, doing voice work for hollywood or recording audio books. Not leave music of course but he could have a huge side gig.
Oh I would love to listen to an audiobook narrated by Tuomas!
So nice that Jukka is doing pretty well and optimistic attitude is there even though we know now that Marco decided to leave. In these Covid times it has been so comforting to listen to Human :II: Nature songs not to forget the earlier material.

I'm VERY glad that the new album was released when it was, and I have been consuming it exactly as Tuomas describes, soaking in the details. I've seen comments from some fans who don't enjoy Human. :II: Nature. as much as some of the older albums. That's fine, but I feel like this album really reflects the evolution and maturity of the band beautifully, and the production is masterful. Seeing live versions of those songs will now be a much deeper experience after having lived with them for some time.

He makes songs good even without the singers, the instrumental and symphonic versions of his songs are beyond amazing. As someone who sometimes needs to concentrate when studying this helps me a lot. I think I have like 5 versions of some of his songs since I need both the studio, instrumental, one of each with all singers live AND orchestral version if available.
He is such a humble nan for someone who composed and performs such Amazing music.
A rarity in Rockstars these days, Nightwish are a truly unique band.
I love how they are looking out for their technical crew until they can get back on tour, I have heard that a lot of bigger bands had just let all their tour crew go, no financial assistance. It is clear that Nightwish see these guys as part of their extended family.

@@lunamoon4880 Music can have a huge effect on mental health. While many might use "this music saved my life" in a hyperbolic figure of speech, music can indeed save someone from, say, suicide.

To follow up on Tuomas' point about the pandemic giving people time to really listen to the new album (another masterpiece btw) I know that alot of folks here in the New York metro area have now discovered Nightwish and the whole symphonic metal genre through You Tube......since alot of business is now conducted via video (Zoom. Office Suites, Cisco etc.) folks are sitting at their screens surfing the net in between meetings........while I am happy to be seeing them in NYC (I hope) in Oct. 2021......it saddens me to see these brilliant artists playiing in 3.000 seat venues in the US and headling 80,000 fan festivals elsewhere..............I trust one day we'll be seeing them in Madison Square Garden or Yankee Stadium.......btw i note you're into baseball, allow me the honor and pleasure of getting you, Jukka and whoever else is a fan, tickets to the New York Yankees while you're here in New York.......which is right around playoff time or World Series if the damn Yankees would start to hit this season! Stay safe!
As a fellow NYer I agree, they should be playing larger venues. It sucks that there is no dedicated Metal station in a city/metro are of nearly 19 million.
Well he said Finnish baseball (it's a bit different, but very much the same 🤣), but I'd guess they'd be in for a baseball match too.
@@Garbox80 Ill have to look Finnish baseball up, but still would like to get him to Yankee stadium so he can scout out the venue for the next US Tour.....these guys shoule be playing stadiums here
@@alexojeda9048 WDHA 105.5 FM out in west Jersey is a metal station. You can't pick it up in the city though. Haven't heard any symphonic metal on there.
I think the only good thing about Corona is that many American You Tubers are discovering Nightwish and reacting to their music. So I hope that Nightwish will get the attention they deserve in the USA. Also Rammstein made it into the US market through the back door. So there is hope that many people will discover the magic of Nightwish with you. Regards from Munich and keep on Rockin'!

I am actually very happy they released the album. I think their music, as well as the newly released albums released by other bands during the pandemic, have really helped me cope with all the restrictions. Same with all the official concert videos on UA-cam. I really hope Nightwish knows how much their music means to people around the world.

So happy for Jukka! I found NW 3 months ago and would love to see them LIVE. Hope to make it a reality. Such a humble interview.

I don't think you are ever going to read this Toumas, but I've been listening to your music for years and never has it been such a good time to have a new album than now. I lost my 2 grandmothers because of covid and i'm able to remember them with a smile on my face and a tear down my cheek while listening to songs like "music" and "endlessnes", thank you and good night :)

I live in Texas and bought tickets to see both of their shows in Los Angeles California in October so hope they stay on schedule as well because I had to but plane tickets, hotel and rental car as well.
@@bm625 I envy you 😁 I will have to wait until December to see them live. I just started thinking to go in an another country to see them earlier but I have to figure out all the logistics.
@@bm625 No chance since they've moved the European dates to the fall. This is an old interview clearly. He still talks about the spring tour dates in 2021 like they will happen. He doesn't mention the virtual concerts which was announced before Marko left and not a word about Marko leaving so my guess, 5-6 months old interview at least, probably more.

Lovely news on Jukka,eventhough i heard Kai say he was doing well in another interview on YT (wich sadly got lost very recently) From what i get by Tuomas saying all this about Jukka,i guess that it means that Jukka wont be returning to the place where his heart belongs: the drumseat. I would never wish for Kai to depart at this point,but Jukka is the greatest drummer i have ever seen,and i have expressed a wish to see Nightwish with 2 drummers on theyr shows. Phil collins had 2 other drummers with him on tour,several artists/bands has had the same. It makes for a really good,unique sound and visual experience. Nightwish could take it to yet another level! (I can only dream)

It seems that it was recorded before Marko decided to quit. In mid 2020.
I strongly suspect that was the item he did not want to address and why the album came out when it did.
@@MrFrikkenfrakken No this is done before Marko left. He talks about tour dates in Europe during spring 2021 which has now been postponed and not one word about the virtual concerts. Why would Marko's decision to leave the band in January this year have affected the release of the record last spring?

@veronica b He/They knew Marco was on the verge of leaving 3:30. They had to release it before he left the band.

Great to hear this interview and that the band are helping the technical crew. All of us have finished decorating and landscaping the garden and we cannot wait until the Authorities see some sense and stop giving in to their fear. The first government to break the chain will definately reap rewards for their courage. And those that do not, will feel the pain, soon.

I’m sure of one thing; we are witnessing the end of life as we had come to know it, now things will get messy, history repeats, violently oppresses and resets, and repeats.

It's good to hear Jukka is doing well, miss this guys energy. Hope this covid-bs will be over soon and the band can go on the regular tour. Great Interview Radio Metal, although I could watched it a good hour longer^^. It's a bummer you didn't asked him if he allready have Ideas or maybe a whole concept for the next album, would be interesting to see if he would answer that question 😁

My personal dream is to see a concept album written by you, that revolves around norse mythology (gods, valkyries, myths and all of that). I know there are many bands out there who are specialized on that kind of music but I would love to see your take on it, because I think Nightwish could deliver something truly special. Maybe not with the next album but one day? 😉👍

@@johannessilver8653 So true that Tuomas is a racist pig! Did you read his Open Letter To Tarja about cultural differences. Right there is him admitting that he is a proud racist and bigot! The reason is not because Tarja left him for another man, but because Marcelo is Latino or Hispanic and not a white guy. If Tarja left him for a white guy, he would not have cared at all. Toumas is opposed to interracial marriage and he called Tarja a race traitor. That is why he fired her not because she was a diva. Therefore, Tuomas is a self-proclaimed proud racist and bigot and racist pig!
The pandemic brought me to nightwish so the album release was perfect for me.

A lot more people are indeed discovering them now. It's probably going to be harder for them to buy the album at this time, but I'd say there's a market for it (once people get over losing Marko, anyway.) I managed to get tickets for the tour later this year and I am beyond excited. Making sure I get vaccinated before then.
We can't wait to be back in the pit ! :-)

I Love the band Nightwish and Tuomas Being such a Creative soul to have produced so many wonderful numbers, they really are Masterpieces for sure!!! The utopian thought from me is that one-day may be Tarja Turunen and Marko Hietala would do work again in Nightwish!!! I can't forget the magic the duo produced in the "Phantom of the Opera"!!!! Of course Floor Jensen is a very good artiste, but I got special liking for Terje and Marko!!!! Lastly, This works is so unfair that such a Phenomenal Band - Nightwish is so underrated!!! Love from Bangladesh!!!!
Whenever questions about Jukka comes up I always get the feeling that Tuomas is protecting him.
Tuomas doesn't want Jukka to try and get back on the kit, only to find it was a bad or poorly-thought out decision.
On the other hand, I read a French interview where Jukka wants to get back on the kit, and badly.

@@isaiahwelch8066 playing a show and a tour are two different things. I think for Jukka who had such a serious health problem going on a tour will make him reach a breaking point again.
And maybe he is also protecting himself. Like he said Jukka has found peace with the situation, but Tuomas has not. You may just wonder what Tuomas is thinking and feeling after Marco left...
@@venla5375 - Yes, I have seen an earlier interview were he said he could not take any more changes in the band, I think it was after Jukka left and Kai came in. I hope he doesn't dissolve the band - fingers crossed. Cheers / B.

From watching alot of Tuomas earlier interviews where he says that an artist or a poet have to have some "issues" to create art, this is said with love btw. Tuomas lyrics and music can be very personal at times. He talks about Jukka having found his balance in life, and that he is not quite there yet himself. Will it be the end of Nightwish when that day comes?

And when covid ends or gets under control helsinki newly renovated stadium 5 days in row just to let some steam off.We have to party now.And with the no.1 band with a new record.Tuomas pakko saada se hollantilais nainen ulvomaan tänne perkele.Muut eivät kelpaa.
I know its hard to fathom for a band that has achieved such a international success, but I would go where you can play, even if its just clubs, and I'd stay in the trenches and continue playing.
If this was in September why are we just now seeing it?
