At the end of the day, if it was about greed, Bret would've taken WCW's original offer of $3 million a year and bolted without considering taking McMahon's offer, which was less than half what Bischoff was offering. They made the mistake but making NWO too much of a primary heel. I mean of course it was epic at first and a very good storyline especially when Sting became the dark hero leading the way. But once they split the factions in two it should have just died down after that. It became predominantly NWO all over the place and everyone is on a certain side if not the same the side and we lost all out on all those possible matches you mentioned. They went from being really creative to wasting away the creativity.
Goldberg never meant to hurt Bret and had no idea that he could hurt Bret like that with just one kick. Bill Goldberg got MINIMAL training from the WCW Power Plant, and was rushed on to TV. He did what he was told to do, and was always told he did a great job. HE learned a hard lesson that day. He has apologized to Bret countless times and legitimately feels awful about what happened - but the one thing he can't do is change what happened. Bret knows that, but still seems bitter and holds a grudge. Bret knows it was Kevin Sullivan and others at WCW who kept telling Goldberg that he was doing a great job when, in reality, he was hurting the other guy in the ring and needed to learn proper techniques to prevent injuries. Bret got screwed again, this time because the people in charge at WCW just saw dollar signs and packed arenas because Goldberg had gotten over so much. I thought at the time that he was the guy who looked most like he could really crush his opponents in the ring. Little did I know it was because he was wrestling way to stiff and wasn't using proper technique. Unfortunately, Goldberg didn't know it, either, and no one in charge told him. It was a bad situation all around. Bret was great, and his career was needlessly cut short. It should never have happened.
I'm glad Bret cleared up what few people knew: Goldberg was green and being pulled in a million directions. That's why he wasn't ever a very polished guy in the ring. He's wrong about Hogan, however. Hogan was a massive draw for a long time, but he didn't have any ability to push Bret down. It's not his fault that audiences preferred Hogan's brand of entertainment to Bret's brand of technical wrestling. Sure, Bret's matches were fundamentally perfect; the psychology was there, and the build up to high spots were implemented flawlessly. But that's not what the business is about entirely.

He refused to drop the belt to him in WWF, and still wouldn't work with Bret when he came to Atlanta, even after Bret proved to be a Megastar. I don't think Hogan was HBK-level (who was the absolute worst) in how he operated, he definitely put over his fair share of guys, but he definitely refused to put Bret over (which is a large part of how Hogan ended up in WCW). And, yeah, Goldberg was handled horribly. WCW was such a mess. They had Sting and Flair, and that's it. The Kevin Sullivan vs Hogan stuff was terribad. Nash and Hall cashed in and turned WCW into what it was, but in the back, everything was still being done the same way. They had no idea what they were doing. They kept coming upon great talent and being unable to recognize it. WCW had just about every future star in WWF/E except a couple guys. Kane, Owen Hart, Undertaker, Hall, Nash, Austin, Mick Foley, Triple H, Jericho, Benoit, Eddie, Big Show (granted, WCW did a better job with him than WWE...which is just a reflection of how poorly he's been used), and many others.
Sad but true because wrestling In the USA is about showmanship and giving long winded speeches on the mic as well as angles, gimmicks and characters. I think more people are appreciating technical wrestling today. I prefer a great technical wrestling match over someone who just talks for 30 minutes on the mic.

The Iron Man match between him and Shawn Michaels is probably my favorite wrestling match of all time.

WCW had a lot of experienced, talented wrestlers under contract that they didn't use and basically paid to be at home. There could have been a rotation so that they could have trained the wrestlers that had been hired for their looks and charisma instead of skills. Lanny Poffo for example was under contract for five years and never did a match for WCW. Since Angelo Poffo had is own wrestling promotion, the ICW it's possible that Lanny had experience teaching new wrestlers. That the WCW didn't use the ressources at its disposal to improve Goldberg is on them, not on him. Had they made clear that he needed to improve, he might not have gotten such a big ego. Ray Mysterio, Scott & Rick Steiner could also been paid a bonus to train Goldberg.
Not once does JR try to shut down anything Bret tells him about Goldberg, Sullivan and Bischoff, and reasonably so. Sullivan never drew a dime and Bischoff went from a catalog model to a complete bad-idea generator.

So many people in WCW said that the power plant never trained anyone how to wrestle but just how to look good on tv. WCW never knew how to book promote or market talent.
Bret was never much on the mic, but inside the ring, he was impeccable. Saw a match he had with Mr. Perfect, and sure, it was a work, but it was one of THE best works ever done, showcasing how good both of them really were. As for his accident with Goldberg, it was an accident. BG apologized, and Bret has largely let it go, although I can't blame him for being bitter. But the thing is, he did get a lot of money for his years in the ring. Maybe not as much as Hogan or other big names, but more than enough. As for the politics...I only know what I read, and there are so many conflicting opinions...won't go there. The accident, though, it comes with the territory. There's always a possibility of something going wrong, even if it's been rehearsed a hundred times. Bruno Sammartino had his neck broken by Stan Hansen...he didn't like it, but he let it go. Stuff happens...a bad day at the office, as Steve Austin once said. I wish Hart well with his life...he's had a lot of highs as well as a lot of lows.

When AOL merged with Time Warner, they sent Brad Siegal, who was a business partner of Vince McMahon's in the 80s and a friend, to sabotage the product. My favorite wrestler pretty much from the first time i started watching in 1986, when he was just a quiet half of a tag-team duo....still the best wrestler ever, in ring performer and his character was the greatest...i think he has the best story of all of the wrestlers regarding his life in the business...but he's not perfect, he's been guilty of hubris and taking himself too seriously, being something of a self-centered egomaniac and so he's paid for that in a lot of ways, almost all of us act like jerks at times and almost all of us get paid back in some way....so he was punished in life for some of his failures in attitude but he was also rewarded with legions of fans for all of the great things he did in and out of the ring...

Bret was still loved by the kids and he was all about the kids, and wwe was transitioning to teenage and adult oriented programming. Bret was not happy being a heel as well, and was not happy telling america to kiss his ass, and all stuff wwe was having him do. He first and foremost was all about the children. Because of that situation, vince wanted to let him out of his contract. Vince def could afford it, but Vince also favored Shawn Michaels, because for one, Shawn was also being creattive on the more adult oriented stuff he & HHH were doing with DX. Many people rumored that Shawn and Vince had a secret sexual relationship in which bret said himself he felt might have been true but no proof. While I disagree, I feel the same that Shawn's in ring work was sooo top notch and the ability LIKE BRET to make the stiffest wrestler still look good in a match, that it would be stupid for vince to put him down, he really didn't have nobody else in that caliber aside from Owen and Bulldog at those times. But bret not being happy with the angles that was pitched to him, not being happy being heel and just not being happy with his role with wwe and their transition to the attitude era, is why Vince wanted to let him out of his contract. Think about it, if it was only about money Bret said he would take LEss pay and stay, vince still wanted him out. He wanted to go the direction of DX, And austin era. He didn't want to cater to kid oriented programming as he was losing so bad to bischoff he almost got put out of business. He had to make a change, and Austin's Character along with DX was working and already attracting fans. Bret could not understand that for sure. Goldberg didn't learn the hard way, he wasn't stretched to teach him respect, even Hogan had his leg broken by his trainer to teach him to look after the person he's in the ring with. Brets stroke wasn't because of the kick though, he only says it is due to the kick putting his balance off. The Stroke happened when his head hit a rock after he crashed his bike, it had nothing to do with balance issues, he was going way too fast on a rocky path without a helmet, so can't really blame the Stroke on the kick.

The crowd cheers everyone when they come back, even Hogan was being booed in WCW but got cheered when he came to RAW. The crowds today only get hyped if someone returns because they haven't seen the person in a long time, i'll put it this way, everytime Cena comes back and returns from a long injury or vacation he gets cheered, after a while when people see him every week, he starts getting booed again, That was similar to Goldberg back in the 90's, people who saw him every week did end up booing him and there were alot of Goldberg sucks chants. WCW piped in Goldberg chants when that happened. Yea it's all due to one kick from Goldberg... A life time of head trauma is the cause of this, combat sports fighters get knocked out WAY worse every night but move on the fact Brett was in his late 30's and 40's taking this trauma is a big factor, it's impossible to pin point one incident when you take trauma on a regular basis. I've been ko'd in MMA and Muay Thai and I do suffer a little but I can't possibly pin point one shot that's caused the issues! I love Brett but he just wasn't a HUGE draw as the 'main guy' but he just can't face that fact, yes he has lost family but let's face it that was a accident. Wish Brett would just move on. I do think he's right that they should have put him in with Hogan and together it would have been a good draw.
I've seen MMA guys get their heads kicked in the 3rd row. Does it end their careers? Do you ever see the same guys fight at a later time? Blaming the stroke on a single concussion is showing medical ignorance. That may have been the last of a series of concussions, but I seriously doubt 1 concussion gave Bret a stroke. I'm sure the night life up and down the roads doesn't help either. Funny how he mentioned how the Calgary territory would have straightened Goldberg out when his brother Owen severely injured Dan Severn and Stone Cold with the same move. Bret has been bitter before he left the WWE back in 1997 and always had some sense of entitlement. For instance, who dictates where they lose a belt? He couldn't lose in Canada? The whole country? So if a wrestler is from America, does that mean they can cry about losing the belt overseas? I feel bad he's in the condition he's in and did enjoy watching him work back in the day. agree 100%. IMO he just never recovered mentally from Montreal. He was in WCW in person but not in spirit. He said it himself that he didn't want to leave the WWF and it showed. I will admit the powers that be didn't use him right but his sour puss attitude didn't help. Good point about Owen injuring Austin. I guess they didn't rough him up enough in Calgary huh Bret? Sadly, injuries and accidents happen and he still cries about them to this day. I don't blame him for being bitter about Owen's death but he should stop crying about all the other crap. At the end of the day, if it was about greed, Bret would've taken WCW's original offer of $3 million a year and bolted without considering taking McMahon's offer, which was less than half what Bischoff was offering. THAT'S a fact.

They made the mistake but making NWO too much of a primary heel. I mean of course it was epic at first and a very good storyline especially when Sting became the dark hero leading the way. But once they split the factions in two it should have just died down after that. It became predominantly NWO all over the place and everyone is on a certain side if not the same the side and we lost all out on all those possible matches you mentioned. They went from being really creative to wasting away the creativity.

Goldberg never meant to hurt Bret and had no idea that he could hurt Bret like that with just one kick. Bill Goldberg got MINIMAL training from the WCW Power Plant, and was rushed on to TV. He did what he was told to do, and was always told he did a great job. HE learned a hard lesson that day. He has apologized to Bret countless times and legitimately feels awful about what happened - but the one thing he can't do is change what happened. Bret knows that, but still seems bitter and holds a grudge. Bret knows it was Kevin Sullivan and others at WCW who kept telling Goldberg that he was doing a great job when, in reality, he was hurting the other guy in the ring and needed to learn proper techniques to prevent injuries. Bret got screwed again, this time because the people in charge at WCW just saw dollar signs and packed arenas because Goldberg had gotten over so much. I thought at the time that he was the guy who looked most like he could really crush his opponents in the ring. Little did I know it was because he was wrestling way to stiff and wasn't using proper technique. Unfortunately, Goldberg didn't know it, either, and no one in charge told him. It was a bad situation all around. Bret was great, and his career was needlessly cut short. It should never have happened.

He's wrong about Hogan, however. Hogan was a massive draw for a long time, but he didn't have any ability to push Bret down. It's not his fault that audiences preferred Hogan's brand of entertainment to Bret's brand of technical wrestling. Sure, Bret's matches were fundamentally perfect; the psychology was there, and the build up to high spots were implemented flawlessly. But that's not what the business is about entirely.
+Jason Colbeck Eeehhh... Hogan definitely had a hand in Bret's career. He refused to drop the belt to him in WWF, and still wouldn't work with Bret when he came to Atlanta, even after Bret proved to be a Megastar. I don't think Hogan was HBK-level (who was the absolute worst) in how he operated, he definitely put over his fair share of guys, but he definitely refused to put Bret over (which is a large part of how Hogan ended up in WCW).
And, yeah, Goldberg was handled horribly. WCW was such a mess. They had Sting and Flair, and that's it. The Kevin Sullivan vs Hogan stuff was terribad. Nash and Hall cashed in and turned WCW into what it was, but in the back, everything was still being done the same way. They had no idea what they were doing. They kept coming upon great talent and being unable to recognize it. WCW had just about every future star in WWF/E except a couple guys. Kane, Owen Hart, Undertaker, Hall, Nash, Austin, Mick Foley, Triple H, Jericho, Benoit, Eddie, Big Show (granted, WCW did a better job with him than WWE...which is just a reflection of how poorly he's been used), and many others.
Sad but true because wrestling In the USA is about showmanship and giving long winded speeches on the mic as well as angles, gimmicks and characters. I think more people are appreciating technical wrestling today. I prefer a great technical wrestling match over someone who just talks for 30 minutes on the mic.

Though there is no excuse for what happened, I still think there's another perspective. I bid this wrestling legend a happy and long life. The Iron Man match between him and Shawn Michaels is probably my favorite wrestling match of all time.

WCW had a lot of experienced, talented wrestlers under contract that they didn't use and basically paid to be at home. There could have been a rotation so that they could have trained the wrestlers that had been hired for their looks and charisma instead of skills.
Lanny Poffo for example was under contract for five years and never did a match for WCW. Since Angelo Poffo had is own wrestling promotion, the ICW it's possible that Lanny had experience teaching new wrestlers. That the WCW didn't use the ressources at its disposal to improve Goldberg is on them, not on him. Had they made clear that he needed to improve, he might not have gotten such a big ego. Ray Mysterio, Scott & Rick Steiner could also been paid a bonus to train Goldberg.
Not once does JR try to shut down anything Bret tells him about Goldberg, Sullivan and Bischoff, and reasonably so. Sullivan never drew a dime and Bischoff went from a catalog model to a complete bad-idea generator.
Sullivan drew enormous money in FLA & is a close friend of Ross’s. Sullivan is also widely regarded as one of the greatest bookers ever. Ross didn’t interject because he respected his guest’s views
So many people in WCW said that the power plant never trained anyone how to wrestle but just how to look good on tv. WCW never knew how to book promote or market talent.

Bret was never much on the mic, but inside the ring, he was impeccable. Saw a match he had with Mr. Perfect, and sure, it was a work, but it was one of THE best works ever done, showcasing how good both of them really were. As for his accident with Goldberg, it was an accident. BG apologized, and Bret has largely let it go, although I can't blame him for being bitter. But the thing is, he did get a lot of money for his years in the ring. Maybe not as much as Hogan or other big names, but more than enough.
As for the politics...I only know what I read, and there are so many conflicting opinions...won't go there. The accident, though, it comes with the territory. There's always a possibility of something going wrong, even if it's been rehearsed a hundred times. Bruno Sammartino had his neck broken by Stan Hansen...he didn't like it, but he let it go. Stuff happens...a bad day at the office, as Steve Austin once said. I wish Hart well with his life...he's had a lot of highs as well as a lot of lows.

When AOL merged with Time Warner, they sent Brad Siegal, who was a business partner of Vince McMahon's in the 80s and a friend, to sabotage the product. They kept changing the book on what storylines they could do and couldn't do. If Vince McMahon wasn't close buddies with some of the AOL guys we probably still would see competition in Wrestling.

My favorite wrestler pretty much from the first time i started watching in 1986, when he was just a quiet half of a tag-team duo....still the best wrestler ever, in ring performer and his character was the greatest...i think he has the best story of all of the wrestlers regarding his life in the business...but he's not perfect, he's been guilty of hubris and taking himself too seriously, being something of a self-centered egomaniac and so he's paid for that in a lot of ways, almost all of us act like jerks at times and almost all of us get paid back in some way....so he was punished in life for some of his failures in attitude but he was also rewarded with legions of fans for all of the great things he did in and out of the ring...

bret was def not greedy he DID NOT WANT TO leave vince he loved him like a father. It was the change in wwe and the creation of the Attitude Era, that bret was not comfortable with. Bret was still loved by the kids and he was all about the kids, and wwe was transitioning to teenage and adult oriented programming. He was not comfortable with making gay jokes on live tv, swearing and all kinds of stuff vince wanted him to do. Bret was not happy being a heel as well, and was not happy telling america to kiss his ass, and all stuff wwe was having him do. He first and foremost was all about the children. Because of that situation, vince wanted to let him out of his contract. Vince def could afford it, but Vince also favored Shawn Michaels, because for one, Shawn was also being creattive on the more adult oriented stuff he & HHH were doing with DX. Many people rumored that Shawn and Vince had a secret sexual relationship in which bret said himself he felt might have been true but no proof. While I disagree, I feel the same that Shawn's in ring work was sooo top notch and the ability LIKE BRET to make the stiffest wrestler still look good in a match, that it would be stupid for vince to put him down, he really didn't have nobody else in that caliber aside from Owen and Bulldog at those times. But bret not being happy with the angles that was pitched to him, not being happy being heel and just not being happy with his role with wwe and their transition to the attitude era, is why Vince wanted to let him out of his contract. Think about it, if it was only about money Bret said he would take LEss pay and stay, vince still wanted him out. He wanted to go the direction of DX, And austin era. He didn't want to cater to kid oriented programming as he was losing so bad to bischoff he almost got put out of business. He had to make a change, and Austin's Character along with DX was working and already attracting fans. Bret could not understand that for sure. Either way, I have to agree, he's been through soo much with the business he loved and lived for. He was screwed, humilitated, it tore his relationship up with his family ruined his marriage, and then goes to a company that would not push him while he was WHITE HOT, because of Hogan and his ego or as they say - the HOGAN EFFECT, so he basically sat on the bench going from face to heel to face again to heel again, they just didn't know what to do with him because the main thing was for him to feud with Hogan, and hogan wanted nothing of it. Not to mention Nash who became head booker made it worse for bret because Nash had bitterness towards bret for never wanting to job to him in wwe as bret felt the belt needed to be taken off of nash as he was the worst draw of a champion in which bret was right - DIESEL was! So with nash having power it was certain bret was never going to get what he rightfully deserved and worked hard for and that was for sure.
Wrestling is a art. The idea is to make it LOOK like you're hurting your opponent but in reality you're not. And I don't think Goldberg ever understood that. Goldberg hurt everybody he wrestled, they said that every move Goldberg did hurts.

That's what happens when you bring in green wrestlers and put them at the top without them having to pay dues. Goldberg didn't learn the hard way, he wasn't stretched to teach him respect, even Hogan had his leg broken by his trainer to teach him to look after the person he's in the ring with. Brets stroke wasn't because of the kick though, he only says it is due to the kick putting his balance off. The Stroke happened when his head hit a rock after he crashed his bike, it had nothing to do with balance issues, he was going way too fast on a rocky path without a helmet, so can't really blame the Stroke on the kick.

The crowd cheers everyone when they come back, even Hogan was being booed in WCW but got cheered when he came to RAW. The crowds today only get hyped if someone returns because they haven't seen the person in a long time, i'll put it this way, everytime Cena comes back and returns from a long injury or vacation he gets cheered, after a while when people see him every week, he starts getting booed again, That was similar to Goldberg back in the 90's, people who saw him every week did end up booing him and there were alot of Goldberg sucks chants.

Yea it's all due to one kick from Goldberg... A life time of head trauma is the cause of this, combat sports fighters get knocked out WAY worse every night but move on the fact Brett was in his late 30's and 40's taking this trauma is a big factor, it's impossible to pin point one incident when you take trauma on a regular basis. I've been ko'd in MMA and Muay Thai and I do suffer a little but I can't possibly pin point one shot that's caused the issues! I love Brett but he just wasn't a HUGE draw as the 'main guy' but he just can't face that fact, yes he has lost family but let's face it that was a accident. Wish Brett would just move on. I do think he's right that they should have put him in with Hogan and together it would have been a good draw.

I've seen MMA guys get their heads kicked in the 3rd row. Does it end their careers? Do you ever see the same guys fight at a later time? Blaming the stroke on a single concussion is showing medical ignorance. That may have been the last of a series of concussions, but I seriously doubt 1 concussion gave Bret a stroke. I'm sure the night life up and down the roads doesn't help either. Funny how he mentioned how the Calgary territory would have straightened Goldberg out when his brother Owen severely injured Dan Severn and Stone Cold with the same move. Bret has been bitter before he left the WWE back in 1997 and always had some sense of entitlement. For instance, who dictates where they lose a belt? He couldn't lose in Canada? The whole country? So if a wrestler is from America, does that mean they can cry about losing the belt overseas? I feel bad he's in the condition he's in and did enjoy watching him work back in the day. agree 100%. IMO he just never recovered mentally from Montreal. He was in WCW in person but not in spirit. He said it himself that he didn't want to leave the WWF and it showed. I will admit the powers that be didn't use him right but his sour puss attitude didn't help. Good point about Owen injuring Austin. I guess they didn't rough him up enough in Calgary huh Bret? Sadly, injuries and accidents happen and he still cries about them to this day. I don't blame him for being bitter about Owen's death but he should stop crying about all the other crap.
