“Ray of hope” by the way was actually written specifically for Senator Ted Kennedy in response to the assassination of Robert Kennedy. Felix Cavaliere personally told me that

I read Gene once said The Rascals after the 2nd album became Felix Cavaliere and the Arif Mardin Orchestra featuring the Rascals...The Groovin album is a pop masterpiece.. Arif deserves a lot or credit for the magic of that record.

The band really hit its stride in 1967, like a lot of artists. Hands down the best year for singles in pop-music history and worth deep-dive videos. Just so many new sounds and artists -- including the Rascals' soundalike Soul Survivors of "Expressway To Your Heart" fame -- enlivened the scene. The year was a bottomless pit of musical genius up and down the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart.

Yes! Ditching Wheaton Central HIgh 67 - 8 - and 9 to pay a visit to WCFL and WLS and request our faves. What a magical time for music. Flower children we were and with these songs - yesterday never went away. Keep the love flowing - the music will survive us and someday maybe save our future as earthlings here. Sing some sense to all the other takeaways.❤

Matt, you brought me back to a somber 1968 with “People Got To Be Free” and the sad memory of Dr. King and RFK’s horrendous murders. When “See” was released as a single in 1969 it was a great (edited /shorter) version. The flip side was an awesome Gene Cornish penned, “Away Away”…good stuff. Looking forward to Part Three! Thank you.

The 'Rascals ',were most likely 'The most Creative ,prolific, capable Bands or individuals in the late 60's and early 70's.. They got a bit overshadowed -"Not Underrated" a word that people should chuck.Seen ,them many times in N.Y. met them and talked .A,good friend played w/ Felix ,in His first solo group. They kept their heads above all w/ all the tough Competion from England etc. Many groups and Drummers tried their best to emulate them . 'Live '-No one touched them...They were able to evolve ,all their albums IMO went in a great direction . They utilized Jazz players , horns ,strings etc. form early on .The Beatles did somethings similar . These guys were at that time Great Musicians. If You did not Experience this group "Live"you missed a big answer to these Questions..Peace.

I truly appreciate the old school quality of your videos. You don't try to woo us with fancy bells and whistles in the form of elaborate digital graphics and distracting animated figures or any stuff like that. It's just a straight ahead, unpretentious presentation of the things that matter like the music, the pictures (especially from the record releases), and the oral history. One commenter in another video criticized you for using notes, but I like it because again, it's old school and it signals a certain attention to detail in a basic unpretentious way. Please keep up the great work, and may you be blessed with good fortune and abundance for your efforts.

They never made a bad album. They played rock, soul, pop, protest music, instrumental stuff and they were all good. I can imagine that your next video will be about them falling apart and the lawsuits and the years of not getting along. There were so many years when it seemed like they would never have a reunion. People said they didn't want to be in the same room with each other.

Saw them live in '68 while they were pushing the "See" album. They were hot on stage! The unfortunate downer was the opening act was suppose to be the Critters but they broke up before this tour date so the replacement warm up group fell flat with the audience and took a little bit to build the energy back up as the Rascals came on, they probably recognized it and started out with Good Lovin'. What a concert it could have been!!!!!

The Rascals were all over Boomer radio in the 1970s and 1980s, and then they were gone. Growing up in the late 1970s in CT, I I heard "Lonely Too Long" on 66-WNBC all the time, and thought it was the Beatles! I think all their hits hold up really well, with Mamas & Papas level production and songwriting, and it's very nice to know they had these quality albums to explore.

I have already left a positive comment on this video but I want to touch on something I haven't read anywhere else. I know everything I have read leads us to believe that Eddie was responsible for the breakup of the band when he walked out on them as they were getting ready to sign with another record company. After watching a couple of interviews with Eddie after he had left the band, and knowing a bit of his history (being shot and also involved in an auto accident which left him in a coma), I wonder if Eddie did not suffer from the long term effects of ptsd from both incidents and also from a closed head injury from the auto accident. Neither ptsd nor closed head injury were widely known or talked about back then and doctors certainly had no idea the extent to which both of these could change an individual so drastically. Eddie's band mates described him as not being the same after the auto accident. Mr. Brigati comes across as pretty sensitive and introspective. He has many of the traits of someone with either injury. However, I am not a medical doctor so this is just my opinion. My thoughts are based solely on my experiences through the years. As opposed to looking at him as a greedy person who destroyed the group, I tend to think he suffered damage at a young age and the medical field did not recognize it or know how to treat it. I like each of the members individually and they each contributed so much to the best band ever for five years. I don't think any of them was all right or all wrong. I want to thank each one of them for contributing their immense talents to the group we loved as The Rascals. Blessings & Peace ~

Yeah, that's a good take on Eddie. In his book Gene talks often of Eddie's nervousness in the studio and general touchiness overall. Head trauma can have real long term effects so that may indeed hurt him. The break up wasn't just Eddie leaving, though there was a drop off in the lyrics when he pulled away from writing with Felix.

As always truly appreciate all the work you put into these videos and the quality and sourcing of the information. I'm sure you have an enormous list of future videos.......would love to learn more about The Zombies, and even a video focusing on the history of the Hammond B-3 would be fascinating. Curious if you have an opinion on the best Hammond player of that era. For me feel I have to go with Steve Winwood and those amazing early Spencer Davis records. All the best and thank you so much again.

I have two albums by the Rascals, "See" and "Island of Real". Although I appreciated the early "hippie" ones that preceeded them, like from "Time Peace" forward. "See" wrestles with "Revolver" and Tull's "Benefit" for the one I would take to the proverbial desert island. But now I live in a desert state and I have all three. Wow! "See" got criticized I read for being all over the map, but that is what I liked. And it was so damn rockin' at times. The first and last songs especially. (Also, they [I figure it was Felix] mention Paramahansa Yogananda on the credits, who I consider my guru.) I enjoy your videos--just picked up on them recently after starting a channel myself and staring at the right side of the screen every day.
