"Oh, come on." RIP Dylan's childhood memories.
he got Bugs Bunnyed
He sounded like Ian Sinclair’s “Oh come on!” from _Kaguya-sama._
@GamerFromJump I know Sinclair. Guy has been a Goat for the last 10+ years. I've watched him in anime.
1:22 - Correction Castlevania: Symphony of the Night also released 1997 for the SEGA SATURN.
i thought so
Correct, though only in Japan. And of course there was the canceled Dreamcast game.
I was gonna say. Looks like Jared done goofed.
Yep came here to say just that and SOTN is being ported to the Genesis in modern times too
Akumajo Dracula X: Gekka no Yasoukyoku was released in 1997 for the Sega Saturn. Nothing titled "Castlevania" was ever released on Sega hardware other than Bloodlines. Jared is technically correct.
Castlevania Bloodlines was great. Also, Jonathan in Portrait of Ruin is actually John's son, while Charlotte is a distant relative of Sypha and Yoko. The game's also phenomenal and worth playing. Plus there's that whole "Jonathan!" "Charlotte!" "Jonathan!" "Charlotte!" meme with it.
Eric lecarde is also in the game.
Charlotte's connection to the Belnades Clan is actually unclear. The Aulin family has only Charlotte as a named member, and it's only mentioned once by IGA that she's a distant relative of the Belnades.
I love the banter between Jared and Editor Dylan
Me and my brother rented Claymates later that year. We got all the way up to the Africa world until the game froze with a debug message. The game has no save or passwords. That was the first time I was ever traumatized by a software crash.
Was the second time from Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem? XD
Aw, poor Dylan at the end, not being able to talk about NBA Jam next week.
He did it to himself.
It's ok. He can cover every other port of the game released over the rest of the year.
Castlevania Bloodlines LOOKS amazing. Beautiful game.
It's fun too
@@SECONDQUEST
Oh, yeah, it's really cool.
Sounds amazing too. Some of _the_ best Genesis music ever.
I love the game but I still never get it stuck in my brain its a Castlevania game, always felt like a very excellent CV competitor (same with Contra Hard Corps, its great, I love the crap out of it, still feels like something along the lines of, but not quite Contra)
It plays and sounds amazing too. If I recall correctly the person who would go on to do the soundtrack for Symphony of the Night did the soundtrack for this game as well.
I love that ending with Dylan responding to Jared's Boom-Shackalacka!
What's the reference there?
"Ah, sucker."
"WAIT WHAT--"
INTERCEPTED!!
NBA Jam
Also a call back to the coverage of the sport game Jared did, given he mentioned the "Oh, come on!" From the baseball game.
@@luisaugustomoreiramartinez1314 NBA Jam, one of the best basketball games ever made.
EDIT (6 hours later): Yes, one of the best sports games ever made. I'm not a sports gamer and I enjoyed this as a kid.
Ken Griffey Jr Baseball is one of the greatest baseball games ever made
No.
RBI is still Better.
So is Baseball Stars
This game is shit like your opinion.
Ohh man, my brother and I LOVED Ken Griffey Jrs Baseball! It was one of our favorite SNES games when we were growing up!
I'm not big on any sportsball games but I played the heck out of this one as a kid (and NBA Jam, of course).
Well, technically speaking, Symphony of the Night did get a Saturn port in Japan only in 1998, under the name "Nocturne in the Moonlight", also featuring Maria (from Rondo of Blood -- aged up) as a playable character. This version's bonus features I believe were included in the PSP port, the Dracula X Chronicles. Bloodlines is still my favorite in the entire franchise, and I'm one of the few that prefer it over SC4 on SNES!
mew ichigo
I thought Claymates was a fever dream of my youth, I could never remember the name and I always thought I was thinking of Boy and his Blob. Thank you for putting my mind at ease. I should play it again.
A boy and his blob got a remake by wayforward.
@3:42 - Actually, the protagonist of Portrait of Ruin is Johnathan Morris, the son of the John Morris you played at in Bloodlines. They're completely separate characters.
Jonathan! Charlotte! Jonathan! Charlotte! Jonathan! Charlotte!
Bit of a correction. In Bloodlines, one of the playable characters is John Morris, the son of Quincy Morris from Bram Stoker's novel Dracula. In the sequel Portrait of Ruin, it's not John you're playing as but his son Johnathan
I'll never be okay with the name Jonathon not having two H's in it.
Jon Morris(PoR), son of John Morris(BL).
That sounds suspiciously like a JoJo reference
Exactly! I was going to comment that when I saw your comment.
I thought it was Phillip Morris of the tobacco monopoly
Huh?
The rosters for Ken Griffey Jr were not the players of that day. The Boston Red Sox are the characters from Cheers, Los Angeles Angels are famous actors, the Cincinnati Reds are famous writers with Bram Stoker as the pitcher, and the Colorodo Rockies have horror movie characters.
The Royals were all former presidents. As a Bostonian I loved the Sox being Cheers characters. It was nice to have the edit feature to change them to the real player news.
he said the "Stats" were correct but the names had all been changed.
Btw: Jonathan Morris is the Son of John Morris from Castlevania: Bloodlines. Also John Morris is the Son of Quincy Morris, from Bram Stokers Dracula. the Texan with the BIG Ass Knife, you might remember from the movie! "Bram Stokers Dracula"
Also Erik Lecarde uses the Alucard Spear! which is another awesome callback!
Didn't expect Jared to cover Ken Griffey Jr. That game was my jam for a long time. Still love it. I never got into the future games, but the original one was always my favorite sports game.
The game was shit
What the fuck is wrong with you?
Played Bloodlines recently on the NSO, amazing game.
If you ever want a wild deep dive into the insanity that is the Seattle Mariners- like, as a franchise, as a team, as an entity- Dorktown's documentary on them is 100% worth a watch. The Griffey era is special, but there's so, so much more to them. Even more than just Ichiro.
Great video once again Jared, though just a SLIGHT correction as Symphony Of The Night was released for the Saturn. Also, in Portrait Of Ruin you play as Jonathan Morris (John' son).
Griffey Jr was the best baseball game ever. Absolutely played the shit outta that game.
This was the game that introduced me to the Sega Genesis. When I was a kid, for my 3rd birthday my mom brought me to a KB Toys store and they had the games hooked up to abunch of tvs in the back. Long lines for each one, the first line I got in was the SNES line where they had Super Mario World. While I was playing my mom kept saying "is this the one you want? Hurry up lets go" and I kept saying "waaait I dont know yet!" Well at that time I looked over to my right and saw a bigger kid playing the Genesis and on the screen he was fighting this giant blue rock monster. It looked awesome, so I passed the controller and went straight for that line! As soon as it was my turn, I was blown away by the gameplay and graphics. I was Eric Lacarde(the guy with the lance) and it was amazing with all the skeletons and different monsters that would come after you. My mom asked again "Is this the one you want?" And I immediately said "Yes this one!" And after that Sega was my console and it changed my childhood forever.
Wait, Nintendo of America owned a baseball team from the MLB? I actually didn't know that
Yup. Up until 2016
NoA is based in Seattle so it makes sense
It took me a while to appreciate and enjoy Bloodlines. It was difficult not to compare it to SCIV. Once I accepted that it controlled similar to the NES games, I finally stopped comparing the controls of the two games and actually really enjoyed the game once I finally saw more than the first couple of levels.
It's better than Dracula X.
For me its double edged. I felt it was kinda lame how easy SCIV was, so Bloodlines is a welcome change, but at the same time the western release is way too hard
I’m not sure if anyone called this out but the past 4 or 5 years of MLB The Show has a Retro Mode which is essentially Ken Griffey Jr Baseball. The mode even has “The Kid” commentating / sound bites throughout the game mode. Complete with breaking the bat over your knee when you strike out.
Let's not forget the excellent music in Bloodlines, done by the ever-talented Michiru Yamane who also did the music for Symphony of the Night.
For April Fools week, you should just cover a bunch of Tiger Electronics games!
I genuinely love editor Dylan and I'm so glad that Jared has a co-host in this way.
Claymates was a favorite of mine as a kid! I went to a daycare place before school, and they had a SNES there, and Claymates was one of the games I played a lot. Cool to see it here!
Correction on Portrait of Ruin(unless I misunderstood). In Portrait of Ruin, you don't play as John Morris from Bloodlines, but rather his son Jonathan. I played the game a ton years ago, but I did check online to confirm *juuuuuust* in case.
Edit: Also, I do remember this. Jonathan really hated his dad.
Of fourse. You'd hate your dad too if he died too early while wielding a powerful weapon meant for a bloodline your family belongs partially to.
I remember getting Ken Griffey Jr's baseball game along side the BatterUP baseball controller. Never could get the controller to work properly though, lol!
Fun fact: Symphony of the Night’s composer, Michiru Yamane, composed the music for Bloodlines.
When Konami "was" a Focused Game Developer, not the Sad Shadow, they are sitting in so many Beloved IPs (Including HudsonSoft)
Man I wish those retro game collections included all those wacky tv advertisements from 80's and 90's. Also another great video Jerd! 👍
Ah, good old castlevania: Bloodlines... I'm still trying to beat hard mode to this day
I'll never get tired of the "video game reviews made no sense" running gag
Ken Griffey Junior Presents is also entertaining for it's timing. Late in 1994 season, the Mariners would have to play the rest of their games on the road, as the Kingdome had some emergency repairs, as one of the ceiling tiles killed some of the maintenance staff, followed by the player strike. All this happening while in theaters a fictionalized version of the Minnesota Twins would se the actual Mariners give a mild preview of the 1995 season. As far as Nintendo's ownership of the team goes, that was all Nintendo of Japan's ownership. It gets confusing, because Howard Schultz was the former president of the American branch.
Correction at 3:45 for you Jared.
Bloodlines takes place in 1917 with John Morris. Portrait of Ruin takes place in 1944 and stars Jonathan Morris. John is the father, Jonathan is the son.
250 days until Donkey Kong Country...
Seeing the Montreal's Expo logo breaks my french-canadian heart...
Oh my God, Chris Cruise is doing the voiceover on the Bloodlines ad!
Are we just ignoring Symphony of the Night on the JP Saturn?
Wow, Castlevania & Ken Griffey Jr Presents. What a stellar release week 🤩
I think that Boom Shackalaka hurt Dylan more than Dennis The Menace did.
Bloodlines is my favorite traditional Castlevania game. One thing to note though for collectors is there's actually two boxes for it. It was originally released in the standard plastic clamshell case. Then the second batch of releases for it were in the cardboard boxes they went with towards the end of the Sega Genesis life cycle along with games like Mega Bomberman and X-Men 2: Clone Wars for example. The prices may differ as a result. I have the clamshell version, and that tends to me the more common one, but I've not seen very many cardboard box ones.
Technically that is not the "only" Castlevania game on a Sega console. There was a port of Symphony of the Night called Alumajo Dracula XX or something like that. However it was only released on the Sega Saturn and only in Japan.
Man, I loved Claymates as a kid & totally forgot about it until just before it was added to NSO. Picked up a copy of it & Super Aquatic Games again because Nostalgia is a fickle mistress.
Jared's shirt is giving some serious Hawkeye
I remember Claymates as a kid. I enjoyed the platforming levels but the over world puzzles totally confused me. Time to slot Claymates in the replay list to see if my grown up brain can steer the robots in the right paths now lol. Thank you all for this great series every Friday!
Eric Lecarde's bishonen redesign for the fighting game makes more sense now, look that original sprite, he's very pretty.
Oh lord these card games are only serving to make me think about Balatro at work.
i like now in the 90´s but the episode get better when i get to play one of the game in my childhood like ken griffin jr baseball, thank you jared an dylan
I absolutely LOVED The Ken Griffey, Jr. Presents Major League Baseball Game!! I owned it and Loved playing it so much!!
I argue World Series Baseball has a hidden gem alert soundtrack. Fantastic baseball game.
World Series Baseball was awesome. I spent many hours trying and failing to throw a no hitter.
LOL at the banter between Jared and Dylan 🤣
I spent a LOT of time on Ken Griffey Jr baseball back in the day. Says a lot that MLB The Show had a retro mode a few years back that was "hosted" by Griffey and was super inspired by it, down to the in game music
Dylan is an awesome editor!!! Hilarious to the max!!!
Castlevania Bloodlines is fantastic. I'm also a huge fan of its sequel Castlevania Portrait of Ruin, it's one of my absolute favorite Castlevania games. I love the chemistry between the two playable characters Jonathan & Charlotte, and the game overall is highly enjoyable.
That shirt is awesome! Getting Phantom 2040 vibes
I’m so happy to get the return of the classic Now in the 90s punchline of “Reviews used to make no sense at the time”
"Howard the Goose." When only one is enough to make someone die forever.
"The King of Fighters" was referenced a lot in early SNK games, and the proper KOF series isn't the same continuity as Art of Fighting (where Robert and Ryo are a generation older than Fatal Fury's Terry Andy and Joe, but are about the same age in KOF)
I have to say yalls banter is great!
This is such a good show, great concept and very unique, wish he had started it years ago
The baseball game I had for SNES was Suoer Bases Loaded 4.
Hey Jarad, you dun-goofed TWICE on Castlevania!
#1. Symphony of the Night was also released on the Saturn, with crappier graphics but with more playable characters and entirely new areas.
#2. Jonathan Morris is Portrait of Rune is actually Jonathan Morris JR, the son of John Morris from Bloodlines and an entirely different and new character.
I'm surprised he didn't talk about the special Claymates box
It's not the only castlevania game that Sega ever got. Saturn has a version of Symphony of the Night it just never released outside Japan
I think the series typically focuses on NA and PAL releases only, which would mean Japan only releases arent mentioned.
Symphony of the Night had a version released for the Saturn. Bloodlines is the only Castlevania Sega ever got only if we are talking about Europe and NA.
I forget, did they ever cover Mutant League Football?
I can't believe your mom let you out of the house with that shirt
John and Jonathan Morris are not the same character. Jonathan is John's son.
Always look forward to these updates from the NIT90s
Glad to see Ken Griffey jr. got over his gigantism
Dude, "Symphony of the Night" was released for Saturn.
I had a fun time with Claymates. It made for a pretty good rental.
When a baseball game comes out with a baseball card thinking it would be big money in '94, just remember that Magic the Gathering made those cards obsolete.
Hey some mention of Plok and Solstice. Tim Follin needs more recognition for his music.
Oh dude, that Pictionary soundtrack, am I rite??!!
I love their banter
This is NOT the only Castlevania game Sega received Symphony of The Night also released on Sega Saturn.
Bloodlines isn't the only Caslevania game on SEGA. SotN came out for the Saturn.
I'm guessing at least one of the Steam keys was for What the Golf?! based on Dylan's disclaimer
BEST GAMING SHOW!!!
Jarad, give your editor the DUD NBA Jams.
Hey, MLBPA Baseball has the legendary TODD BONZALES and a ton of other not quite right English names! I’m sorry that you missed that joy.
Bloodlines is actually my favorite Castlevania game. Played it to death, and could beat it with either character on Hard mode. (I didn't have a lot to do as a kid, I guess.) Seriously, aside from the limitations of the Genesis audio, it has some of the best music in the entire series.
Castlevania is my JAM!
Castlevania Bloodlines may not be as awesome as Super Castlevania 4 on the SNES, but it is a very fun games ever made for SEGA. It's also the only Castlevania game without the Belmonts, and follows the story from the novel. John Morris is an example to that reference. But it's the only game that has lots of blood.
I'm going to miss this show, a lot.
7:43 - 7:48
Poor choice of words there, Jared. Poor choice of words…
4:42, i wonder what ever happend to Visual Concepts? The world may never know.
Jared just made me realize the Castlevania Collection isn't on PS5 or XBox Series. Like, I assume it's available via backwards compatibility, but it still feels weird that Konami wouldn't just port it to the new storefronts.
Also, as someone who genuinely loves MLB, Griffey's injury is one thing I'd love to change about the sport. The dude was Mike Trout before Mike Trout was a thing and would have been one of the Top 5 Greatest Players Ever if he hadn't gotten injured. His Sweet Swing was indeed very sweet to watch.
GamePlayers' Chris Slate review rated Bloodlines with an 88%, saying it was worth several playthroughs, even if it wasn't as good as Castlevania IV on SNES. Their reviews always made sense. Except for Shaq Fu, stay tuned for that one.
Jared thanks for stayin
Ken Griffey Jr was one hell of a baseball player in his time. Too bad his career was prematurely cut short when he contracted gigantism.
The thing is, I consider those old 90's magazine reviews about as meaningful as perusing the reviews of a game on GameFAQs. Nobody knew what they were doing. It was all basically for show, and they knew it. They knew their readership was no older than 12.
To the younger crowd, if anyone EVER tries to win an argument on a retro game's "critical reception" from that time and they reference scores, just dismiss that entirely. It's about as meaningful as someone on Tic Tac posting a tier list of their favorite fruit.
I remember playing Bases Loaded and picking the pitcher with the highest percentage. Not realizing it was ERA... oops.
NBA JAM?! NEXT WEEK! Holy... I'm gonna enjoy next week!
I miss 90s commercials
The only OTHER Castlevania game Sega ever got, although a Japan exclusive, there exists a Saturn version of Symphony of The Night!
That title’s not true. SoTN was released for the Saturn in Japan.
