As a huge SNES fanboy... This was the first time I've ever heard of "Battle Cars" & it looks crazy!
I've seen it at rental store BITD... didn't think to rent it. I was more a JRPG guy., but I might give it a go.
I always remember the review on the game showcasing the characters. Buffed Bachmed, Dirty Knuckle Ned, Dr. Diana, Maniacal Mariko. So wild.
I could never beat this awesome game back then so i wanted to emulate it, but I couldn't for the life of me remember its name!
Now I'll finally be able to put this demon to rest, thanks to this channel 😅
Now I'll finally be able to beat
Same!!
play it man. I recently played it again and it's still awesome.
Fun fact: Mario was originally going to carry a handcannon in the first Super Mario Bros., but Miyamato shut the idea down. So, it's funny that almost 10 years later, Nintendo's mascot was allowed to live his dream as a gunslinger for one game.
I thought I would find someone in the comments for this video mentioning that! It's funny to think that family friendly Mario could be sporting a firearm had things went differently back then.
Ah, so similar to Link’s Crossbow training where the initial concept was to send Link to the future for full assault rifle action before they dialed it back to a magic crossbow in Twilight Princess.
I swear there’s a gun addiction hidden deep within Japan just waiting to get out. Even with the Smash 4 global results they always picked characters with guns(America picked punching characters and Europe loves it’s swords)
Note: I’m all for it. Give the Nintendo bois more firepower! 🔫
5:51 NES Four Score anyone? 😁
Kind of like square wanted to give mario a sword for smrpg but miyamoto didn't like it.
He used a airplane and sub to shoot bullets and missiles at enemies in super mario land.
The absolute best game that can use the multitap is Secret of Mana. Still one the best games ever made.
"Multi-player in a RPG?"
I’ve never done this before, but it seems like a lot of fun.
I literally bought the multitap just to play Secret of Mana with my friends.
30 years later and I still have fond memories of playing Secret of Mana 3-player with my dad and my best friend.
The most I remember about Yoshi's Safari is that you can shoot Yoshi in the head; he will bark at you and look back with a googly-eyed expression if hit.
Super Bomberman was THE Birthday game for me. Whenever myself or any of my cousins that were around the same age had Birthday we always played it.
Shoutout to patrons Yeethus and Zangril... I guess I forgot to move up the list a bit lol.
5:50 "The concept of a home console allowing more than 2 people was practically unheard of."
Me, who had been playing 4-player games on the NES with the Four Score for years before 1993: "Wha?"
Bazooka Joe is still, to this day, one of the best chewing gum experiences I’ve ever had.
That first time you read a bazooka joe comic off the wrapper….
Nostalgia
I wish the Super Scope was more popular, it is the best light gun experience I've ever had. I want to live in a world with a lot more classic Super Scope games, where a friend can bring their own Super Scope over for some sick bazooka co-op.
Didn't even know it existed back in the day, I'm sure I would have loved it.
Honestly, that Mario game looked decent too.
It was unfortunately always going to be a hard sell given the thing required *six AA batteries*. You could nearly justify that for the game gear but less so for a single accessory
I've only played it on an emulator with a mouse, but Battle Clash is fantastic and I would love to see it come back somehow. Maybe on virtual console with gyro aiming?
@@rickpgriffin The battery life was really not that big a deal, they would last several multi-hour sessions for weeks if you remembered to switch it off. I would even constantly switch it off during non-interactive sections where I'm waiting for something to stop exploding and such, extending play time even further. There was one time when my stepbrother went in my room and played with it without asking me and left me with dead batteries because he left it turned on. I have never forgiven him.
I still remember how excited I was when I found a Super Scope in a thrift store as a kid... I bought a copy of Yoshi's Safari the same day.
My disappointment was immeasurable when I realized the Super Scope needed a part that connected to the SNES that wasn't packed with it by whoever donated it to the thrift shop, essentially making it little more than a cosplay prop.
Me and my friends, all in our early 40s, still bust out Super Bomberman for rage inducing fun.
That’s actually pretty rad
Glad to hear I’m not the only 40 year old that enjoys games like this….
As reliable as an inanimate carbon rod.
can i be friends with yall
I can't stress just how much Bomberman was played by me, my friends, siblings, my friend's siblings, etc. Even after the 64 came out we would still go back to play the SNES games (1 for punchers and 2 for gloves and that sweet battle music).
Dylan's closing message is a good one. I didn't think I'd like any sports related games as a kid, but my cousin convinced me to give the wrestling games on SNES a shot and man... we played Royal Rumble long into the night. That was where I first learned about The Undertaker and eventually became a fan.
Oh, that Redline call out by Dylan! Such a damn good soundtrack!
Jared, you and your crew have been killing it every Friday, never doubt that for a moment!
me and my sister were wondering what the first game with Peach's name was. thanks Jared.
My brother and I were used to calling her Princess Toadstool, so we thought Princess Peach was a new character!
I played the SHIT out of battlecars back in the day!
I never did but I played one on Genesis called Combat Cars. Basically think of Battlecars but with a top down view like the Micromachines games. I loved it.
Editor Dylan went lightweight scary Papa Meat there for a second "Don't even get me started on sportscars" 😂
Great episode.
"You weak, pathetic fools, I've come-"
To tell you that there are 439 days until Donkey Kong Country...
Battle Cars was my favorite game back in the day. Tons of unlockables, deep, and entertaining.
Each episode, I expect there to be a worried jumpcut to Jared, while Dylan is rambling.
Haven't watched jared for a while but he seems to be doing good for himself and I genuinely enjoyed this video.
I haven't really watched him since he was trying to fuck that underage girl. Kinda weird that happened.
He's put out some banger videos these past few years.
The dudes from Dashin' Desperadoes also starred in a Neo Geo/Arcade game called "Spinmaster" (released Feb. 1994), which is an arcade-style sidescroller in a similar vein to Joe & Mac.
I got a MultiTap separately at some point, not sure how since I never got a Super Bomberman. Used it for Secret of Mana like a chad, and for NFL QB Club 98, like a chad.
“Another company’s attempt at a mascot.”
This makes me worried for the tone of Plok! if that’s next week.
Don’t do my boy dirty, Jared!
My dad got Yoshi's Safari from a yardsale a long time ago, only issue is that we didn't have the Super Scope so all we could do is watch as Mario/Yoshi would run into enemies and die
Dashin' Desperadoes had a spiritual sequel on the Neo Geo called "Spinmasters", which was a really fun side-scroller that you can pick up on the Switch.
Bazooka was indeed a 90s thing. We named our dog Bazooka but ended up shortening it to Zookie.
13:08 If it’s Gunstar Heroes, it’s no doubt the Best Genesis game ever made. It was one of the greatest independent games of the era, and would spawn a legendary line of video games afterwards from the company that made it, stretching 3 generations. I could talk forever about it’s development if I could, but a UA-cam comment would only be so much to express my passion.
“It has begun!” Love that outro haha got me excited. I love this show man. So nostalgic.
I also jam to snes music while I gameDev. And use them in my devlog videos. Keep them coming Jared!
That was a rather entertaining episode if I do say so myself.
I acquired Super Bomberman 3 at some point in the late '90s (can't remember how) and absolutely loved it, the music was infectious and the single player mode made for a fun playthrough. Sometime in the early 2000's I grabbed the Hudson multi-tap off eBay and enjoyed some immense 4 player fun with college buddies. So good.
I was waiting for Battle Cars, it was mine and my dad's favorite racer on the SNES.
Yo that SuperScope Commercial is one of the most 90's things ever.
It's definitely the pixelated Cleave Dylan! XD
You're an Awesome Editor dude.
Damn, Yoshi's Safari! When I was a kid my parents bought the Nintendo Scope second hand from my neighbour, but it only had the 6 game "compilation" which was pretty boring. But years later I won a contest from Spanish magazine Nintendo Acción and got Yoshi's Safari and Battleclash, probably the best two games for the Scope. I remember making my younger brother play YS with me in the 2 players mode, he used the pad and I took charge of the Scope. I think we never finished the game, it wasn't that easy! Goood times.
My dad loved playing GP-I and GP-II when I was a kid. I can't believe I forgot about it until it came up in this video.
I have to go call my dad and ask him if he remembers those now, too. Thanks, guys!
Bang on job Jared m’boy! I think this is your best episode so far! The writing was great, humor on point, editing sharp, and your delivery was easily y out r best I feel! Congratulations! You’re a PRO.
I looked up a longplay of Yoshi's Safari and one of the top comments was declaring Mario to be edgier than Shadow because he got a gun first.
Super Bomber Man 2 had the greatest multiplayer level in the entire series, the Mushroom Forest. Giving you the ability to jump over obstacles was a game changer.
best part of the vid was the "super simp brother" part
As a kid I remember seeing ads for the Super Scope and not even knowing what it was for. I've never even held one. Now, with all the overdesigned peripherals we've seen in the decades since, I can't even imagine being five and hoisting that thing on my shoulder for a whole play session. The NES Zapper itself is only remembered for Duck Hunt, but it's a much better peripheral because it's easy for *anyone* to hold and aim.
Weirdly enough, I feel like a modern version of Yoshi's Safari could be pretty tight.
That said, I reckon they'd need more weapon variety. Perhaps the NES Zapper could be the rapid-fire, and the Super Scope would be the heavy-hitter, while also having a Hammer for enemies that are better dealt with up-close. Meanwhile, Mario would be able to throw special attacks with his offhand; stuff like fireballs, snowballs, superballs, boomerangs, Koopa shells, bananas, etc. With that said, offhand specials would probably only be for Zapper and Hammer, since the Super Scope would need two hands, though it'd probably have multiple firing modes to compensate: one launching a homing Bullet Bill, the other launching a "dumbfire" Bobomb.
5:50 "the concept of a home console allowing more than two people was practically unheard of." Both the NES and Game Boy each had a four player adaptor before the Multi-Tap was created. The ability to have four players on home consoles was pretty heard of, by that point.
I love Dylan's segments, just anticipating what he's gonna say next lol
He's funny and very entertaining.
Ah, Yoshi Safari brings back childhood memories….mostly sad ones because I rented it from the store and only afterwards found out about needing the scope which they didn’t have in supply so I just sat watching the intro screen and reading the play manual. Loved the designs though.
Would love a remaster to actually play it.
Also interesting to see the Predator franchise curse’s fledgling start was on the games before it evolved to eat the movie franchises. :p
Dylan little blurb at the end about not letting people get to you on things you like is very good advice. Also gonna have to find that ost now.
Super bomber man was one of those games I always rented at my local Aardvark entertainment (rental store) as they rented systems and accessories so got the multitap too. Was always fun for parties, and then playing 3 player Secret of Mana, or FF6 four player.
Best run and gun hmm? Gunstar Heroes, Alien Soldier, or Contra Hard Corps.
Oh on its time. Time for the birth of the ESRB....
So, did anyone else hear MORATAL KOMBAT when Jared said "it has begun" or was that just in my head?
How funny, the SNES Alien vs. Predator game _is_ the first thing I think of when AvP games are brought up
mainly because it left quite an impression on young me emulating random games with ZSNES
I got from, I think a cousin's floppy back in the early 00s. And I agree with Dylan, speaking of
the music in Redline isn't just great, but reminds me a lot of Japanese Jazz Fusion. And that is _very_ good
Fun fact: my parents bought me Yoshi’s Safari for my birthday; only problem was, they didn’t buy the Super Scope. I ended up having this game that only stayed in the title screen and that I couldn’t play, so I only watched the game go on in demo mode. 😂
Super Bomberman was an amazing game! The co-op story was really fun too! Got to the last boss on a 7 day rental and couldn't figure out how to beat him with my brother since he flew above the stage and never came down. It wasn't until we got Super Bomberman 2 for Christmas that we realized that all of the hands the last boss gave us were for throwing bombs in the air. Super Bomberman 1 is to this day my all time favorite Bomberman game and I really wish it would get a re-release.
Editor Dylan has the voice of someone who loves sports, cars, and sportscars.
And he loves eating sports games.
I've been waiting for this one sivr you started Jared! You've finally gotten to my birthday, 30 years ago. So cool to see what came out around this time. Glad you guys are still keeping this show going, I really like the vibe you guys have. As always, looking forward to the next vid!
I got Yoshis Safari as a kid, beat it in like 1/2 an hour, thought it was really lame, told my Dad, then wound up back at Target watching my Dad get super pissed at the clerk when he told us we couldn't exchange the game once it was open. That game was hella lame. Then I talked him into buying me Capcom's Aladdin anyways, soooo.. that was pretty cool. edit: 4:10 I think X-Zone by Kemco might be the best Super Scope game I played back in the day, much aided by the ability to put an aiming reticle on the screen by holding the cursor button, so you could fire the SS from the hip and avoid the fatigue inherent with holding your arms up for extended periods. Good action, good music.
Bomberman is such a good party game, probably one of my favourites, and an underappreciated one at that. Last I played Bomberman was Super Bomberman R for the Switch with my brothers, and we had such a good time shouting in rage and anger at each other.
redline f1 soundtrack seems inspired by casiopea like many racing games of the era. that jazz fusion sound
Redline's music sounds cool. Battle Cars looks awesome as a Mario Kart clone.
1:45 Now in the 40s
It is my birthday, Gamera rebirth came out, I got to play some games with friends, and a new episode of now in the 90s is out.
life is good
Rented Battle Cars once or twice from a local place when I was a kid, probably 1999 or so. I enjoyed it then, but definitely need to go back and give it a play soon. Great episode as always, gang!
We got the multitap solely to play Secret of Mana. We never used it for anything else.
I like that how Nintendo experimented on different to bring unique gaming experience, and Super Bomberman is a good example.
I'd been trying to remember the name of Dashin' Desperados for so long. 😭😭😭
Thank you so much, I was starting to wonder if the game was a fever dream.
Gotta appreciate how, given Mortal Kombat coming out next week (both the original game and this year's iteration, incidentally) has been part of the trivia throughout the video, the ending teaser drops all subtlety by blaring the Mortal Kombat theme song in the background.
Great episode as always. I think I heard of Battle Cars but haven't had a chance to play it. Sounds like something I would've loved back in the day. Same goes for the Bomberman game. The first game in the series I played was Bomberman 64. Well, first game I played and UNDERSTOOD was that one. Was waaaay too young to understand what was happening in the original NES game when that came out.
Taking this time to congratulate the folks behind this channel on 50K subs and counting. Here's to everyone who enjoys this channel. As an 80s baby and a 90s kid, I'm so very happy to relive these games , ads, etc and see what I missed. Truly a great feeling
We need a Dashin' Dylan game. So we all can compete against Jared for a Dylan smooch.
I'd be willing to bet serious money that the reason the super scope looks more like a bazooka/rocket launcher is because of Nintendo's constant urge to be kid friendly. Nintendo of America didn't want people wielding guns like they did with the zapper and wanted to make this peripheral even more distant from any real world weapon. They wanted it to be more like a toy then a real world firearm.
Haha always love this show. So much nostalgia and fun. Thanks Jared, Dylan and David!
Such a genius idea. You guys have set up here. It is very engaging in nostalgic, especially me being 39 years old.
Never played one of them back in the day but it’s cool to hear about the games I missed growing up. Thanks guys
Had the scope and don't even remember that Yoshi game. Super Bomberman was tons of fun in battle mode.
Yoshi's always been my favorite Nintendo character, so it's cool to see a video about him posted on my birthday.
Judging by the cover, I can confirm that GP-1 GP-1 Atlus Atlus Atlus GP-1 was, indeed, made by Atlus.
I wonder how many Super Scopes were utterly destroyed trying to make that commercial.
I always like going around the net finding some hidden jam
Its like the one you find way back in your fridge and thank god that stuff doesnt catch mold
yay! I waited all week for this!
I actually was hyped for Yoshi's Safari. I even owned it for awhile (got it for super cheap when Blockbuster was liquidating their SNES inventory), but never got a Super Scope to actually be able to play it.
I thought the first Alien/Predator crossover was the xenomorph skull on the trophy wall in Predator 2.
I love how Alien vs Predator has the exact same "Cloak of Darkness" powerup as Wizards & Warriors, that's every bit as useless.
Great show! Appreciate the hidden gems
I had the Superscope and Yoshi's Safari. They were pretty fun and good for playing with a friend.
back to now in the 90s =) woot
The Super Scope, the accessory I always dreamed of having as a kid
I chewed Bazooka Gum when I was a kid. They had water tattoos in some of them and others had tiny comics telling the tales of Bazooka Joe. Toys and candy were tied together in cool ways back then along with those quarter machines.
Next week will be one of those weeks where videogame history was written.
Gods i remember that super scope commercial and it made me think that toy was so cool.
Boy, that comment about Bomberman and Konami really hurts... 😞
I remember renting Battle Cars way back when! It was certainly a great mix of Mario Kart and F-Zero and it had 2-Player split-screen! I also remember there being a cheat code revealed after you beat the game that let you play in the top-down "Micro Machines" perspective the ending cutscene would show you. (It also made the game slightly easier by not spawing the crushers that'd appear when time ran out in the qualifying stages, basically giving you infinite time to farm credits to upgrade your car!)
Thanks for the advice Dylan!
My dad and I have Red Line F-1 Racer, but in the UK it was called Aguri Suzuki F-1 Super Driving! And the music and game were both great!
This is fantastic information. My friend had the super scope. Would have loved to play this back in the day. Great to see some footage
Her name is Princess Peach Toadstool.
Her first name is Peach and her last name is Toadstool.
That song from Redline, to me, sounds like something from Mario Kart, only more mellow, and I love it!
Just from the clips, Yoshi's Safari looks like it could have been fun, but likely would have been one of those "not worth the investment" situations, since you'd have to buy the Super Scope just to play that and maybe one or two other games. (unless you were all-in on the scope, and decided to go out of your way to collect all those games)
I had never heard about Yoshi’s Safari, but I never had a light gun so that makes sense.
My 14 Birthday....back then....good Times...RIP Grandma and Grandpa
It's funny how during the hearings on violent video games they said the Superscope looked like an assault weapon. It looks nothing like any real firearms do, it doesn't even look like a bazooka.
Good ol' Bazooka gum. Starts out like a rock and becomes chewy after about 5 minutes of gnawing on it. 😄
Bomberman was a great time. One of the few games that got my parents to play with me and my brother.
Thank you Dylan for the Hidden Gem and Hidden Jam alerts! Those were great!
I didn't know Jared was still doing videos. This is awesome.
Yoshi's Safari was one of those games I always wanted to play, but couldn't justify asking my parents to buy a big accessory just for one game.
Years later I'm still terribly curious about the game. I really should give it a try.
Make sure you have a crt tv if you buy the scope an game. They dont work on hd tvs
Dunno if it matters or not but you have an Alabama addy showing on the Nintendo Power. I fuggin LOVE this series btw! Thank you!
