I feel that the two worst things that have ever happened to independent language learners are the CEFR scales as arbitrary goals for self assessment, and the publication of FSI hours. Just study and enjoy, and you will meet your goals appropriately.

Learning series subjects from youtube is just becoming famous, almost 5 years i can say. But you professor, i really admire you. What you do is amazing. I wish i had watched you earlier. Thank you for your kind words of appreciation. 20 is NOT too late to begin to work hard to become a polyglot. Advice? Get started by doing something like the methodology I show here, then adapt it to suit you best, and systematically add more languages!

These are great videos, professor! Thanks for your time and effort in helping us and teaching us how to learn, as well as giving us interesting content to watch. I prefer videos like these to most other videos on UA-cam. Sure, I enjoy watching some mindless entertainment on UA-cam sometimes, but--in general--I far prefer thoughtful, interesting videos such as these.
In the case of French, Italian and Spanish, I think it could be profitable to spend additional time listening _passively_ while doing other things such as driving a car, doing physical exercise, doing housework, etc. One could still have sessions working actively with an Assimil book, but could also spend time listening to other materials such as the Linguaphone courses dating from the 1960s and 1970s. Over time I think one could gain considerably in comprehension simply through repeated listening. However I'm pretty sure this would only be profitable for the languages sharing a lot of common vocabulary with English. In the case of something more exotic (Linguaphone Polish or Linguaphone Arabic, for example) one would hardly gain anything by passively listening - perhaps other than gaining familiarity with the sounds.
I do more active listening than passive listening. I enjoy listening to my foreign language even though i might not understand some of it. I think enjoying the process does give me motivation to continue.
You can passively listen to materials that you have actively studied before. That allows you to build up a base level of comprehension in any languages, even ones that are very different from the ones you speak. For example, I'm learning Turkish, and I'm using the LingQ Ministories - I read one new story every day, put the sentences from there in my Anki deck (which is full of "i+1" sentences from various sources), and listen to the Ministories in my free time. Sometimes I actively listen, sometimes passively. That way, every day I cover new material and do loads of repetition.
Perhaps this is on its way already, but are you planning on making a video detailing getting from the intermediate stage to advanced via books and study as opposed to traditional immersion approaches?
@@ProfASAr If you could or would, I would greatly appreciate it, for I feel I have achieved sufficently 'intermediate' level in a few langauges, yet pushing to that advanced level wherein I would feel comfortable or justified in pronouncing myself fluent in speech or culture I find difficult to know quite rightly just where to begin and proceed.
Follow-up: So after you completed the Lesson 3 review, you would have put the small yellow tab into Lesson 4 (next time you get to week 1, that's where you're at) and moved the orange tab into wherever the yellow tab was in week 2. The next day, you would then begin with your week 2 review, followed by finishing what you could not complete in Lesson 30. The next day, the orange tab would be in week 3, and you'd start on Lesson 31. The orange tab eventually loops back around to Week 1, and so on. N'est-ce pas? Currently reviewing some volumes in a hybrid fashion of these two videos: 15m shadowing loop around the book 15m reading aloud loop around the book It's all technically review/reinforcement (2 generations of Assimil per language) so not doing any set review schemes like this. But it looks like an ideal starting plan once I dig into Using French.

Well, since this is the intermediate level, you will not be "learning" these writings systems so much as polishing and refining them and developing your fluency in reading them. So, the process would not be fundamentally different, just slower. I would do more of the shadowing while reading the text, and incorporate scriptorium into the overall process sooner rather than later. Hope that helps?

I've noticed a few mistakes in your text, don't take it personally , I am just trying to help as an English speaker and a fellow language learner, I have made a lot of mistakes too and I still do. 1st- You should say "I am learning French" France is the country. 2nd- Brazil is written with "Z" in English. And finally, You should capitalize the names of countries, nationalities, and languages. I Hope that helps 🙏.

Those two Assimil books by Tony Bulger are the high watermark of language learning material, I think I've done both of them twice now. Shame they have some outdated references to Minitel and technology in the last two weeks of lessons in the "with ease" book, there's little to fault otherwise.
I would like to recommend a very good workshop by Yuriy Ivantsiv Polyglot Notes. Practical tips for learning foreign language. This excellent book will give you answers how to correctly learn a foreign language with a minimum of your time and effort. This book answers many of the questions that everyone faces when learning a language. Good luck with your important work!

I think you will be interested in the book "Polyglot Notes" by Yuriy Ivantsiv. The book contains a lot of useful tips, both long-known techniques and techniques that involve the use of modern technology of the 21st century. But what attracted me most of all to the book were recommendations from psychology and pedagogy on how to learn a language, how much time to devote to language learning, why language is forgotten without periodic practice, why several languages get mixed up in my head, how to solve the problems that cause many people to lose motivation to learn foreign languages. In the book, all the information is presented concretely, very motivating. You and the author of the book have a lot of similar ideas, for example, only systematic, disciplined and thorough work over a long period of time is the way to success. I will be very glad if this book will be interesting and useful to you!
Just to clarify, you suggest that the day one buys Using French or Perfectionnement X: 15 minutes/day blind shadow the entire book Then 15 minutes/day shadow the book reading English Then add a 2nd 15 min/day session: A-15 minutes/day shadow the book reading French B-15 minutes/day analysis & cleaning up grammar So the A sessions function as review as long as you're behind where you are in the analysis, and as preview as long as you're ahead. Of course, the previewing becomes easier each round as you've further consolidated grammar and assimilated parts of the earlier lessons. My truncated audio for Using French is just under 2 hours, so every 8 days you would complete the book and start anew, with further understanding each time. If it takes 2-3 days per lesson on analysis, then we're looking at 140-210 days to complete (175 to average). In that time you would have been able to shadow the book 21-22 times! Certainly a good amount of practice to assimilate! Maybe somewhere in the middle there change your shadowing to reviewing the first book or something, spend 8 days doing that, then back to the new one. I also noted that you just do the grammar exercises orally instead of writing them down in the Scriptorium. Preferences for that? At some point, perhaps not with the constructed dialogues about a couple meeting because they have the same moped, but for Hugo or Proust, then you would introduce practicing Scriptorium with this book, too? I like the use of the Assimil (or Linguaphone) course as the guidebook for grammar exercises as well. That was precisely my plan for when I begin analysis of the Icelandic Linguaphone - to analyze a lesson, take whatever grammar points they talk about then look at the old TYS book and do some of those exercises, and so on. Good to know it will be a fruitful endeavor. I have a compulsion of wanting to do everything "in order" which causes trepidation in hopping around a grammar course!
Yes, David, that is all about right. It's a flexible and adaptable system, though - the different stages and kinds of shadowing should be done as needed / effective and not in set formula. And yes, I would do the literary excerpts in scriptorium over the chatty ones. I do think grammatical exercises are best done orally.

Thank you for this excellent explanation. It was very interesting for me to see how you work with a grammar book. I used to write down all the sentences while doing grammar exercises - but it takes way too much time (and is boring). I'd like to ask one question - what do you do, when you see (while doing an exercise from a book), that you get an idea, but make some mistakes - do you mark this exercise to repeat later? Do you do the same exercise later (for example, the next day), or do you just proceed and worry about it when you meet the same problem next time. Or maybe you do later more exercises related to the problematic grammar area?
Hello Marcin! Sorry, but I don't have a set answer to your question - it depends on the nature and degree of the error(s). If it is systemic, I read up on it; if it is casual, I just do it over; if it complex, I try to find some pattern drills, etc.

Maybe I'm the only one, but I'm unclear on how you plan out the review schedule. Are you choosing the review activity (comparative analysis, for example) based on your understanding of the lesson? Or is it completely based on the number of days since you first shadowed the lesson?
Maybe I said it too quickly. I block off each 7 days with a blue label to the side. I put a yellow label at the top of the last lesson I have reviewed inside each 7 days. I put an orange label to indicate the last one of these that I have reviewed. So, I did lesson 30 (new) and reviewed lesson 3 (from the first block). When done, I would move the yellow label for the first week to lesson 4 and the orange label up yellow label in the 2nd week (e.g., to lesson 8). So, when I go back the next day and finish lesson 30, I will review, lesson 8, then move the yellow label up to the 3rd week (e.g., lesson 15). The next day, I will learn 31, review 15, move the orange label up to the 4th week, and so finish 31/start 32 and do, e.g., 22. When I have caught up to the week where I am learning, I will go back and start review lesson 4, etc. This sounds more and more complicated as I write it out. I do hope it is clear????
@@ProfASAr I see, So every new kanji you would write it in a notebook( your scriptorium) and then you would review it periodically. The problem for beginners + assimil Japanese would be the start where near to 100% are unknown symbols...
@@DouglasSilva-ys6lw This is an inevitable problem with Japanese and Chinese, not just with Assimil, is it not? I believe Assimil even has special supplementary volumes to help with this now that I think of it.
@@ProfASAr I just noted those script volumes in Assimil. I speak, read and write Japanese and, where the language itself is beautifully simple and logical, the script is not. (Compared to Croatian which I am learning, where the written language is simple and logical but there are seven cases and three genders. Sigh.)
Thank you very much for making this extremely useful and informative video! Question for you, when initially going through lessons 1-50, at what point do you decide it’s ok to move on to a new lesson? I know you stated roughly that you should move through around 1 lesson per day (unless the lesson is particularly long), but I’d feel like the information goes in and goes right out for me. If you have leisure to spend time studying a language for 1+ hours a day (as I’ve made it a habit to rise at 5 AM and study prior to my work day, and family wakes up), would you recommend mastering each lesson before moving too far ahead? For instance, I won’t advance further than 3 lessons ahead until I’ve at least been able to read the target language aloud, and tell myself word for word what the translation is in English. I’ll go through and highlight what I’ve already learned, and internalized by heart, and then the following day or session, I’ll ignore those portions, and only focus on the unhighlighted portions; once everything is highlighted for the lesson, I’ll then allow myself to advance to a fresh lesson, but still cap myself to not push past 3 new lessons (for the sake of having some variety). Does this strategy make sense? Is it something you would recommend, or do you think it’s overkill, and I should allow myself to move on earlier than this (it definitely takes significantly longer to complete each lesson, even at an hour or more per day). Currently, I’ve completed the first 15 lessons this way, and working my way through (Assimil Spanish with Ease). Thanks a ton for everything you do! ❤
If using this method as you describe using it is working well for you, then just keep at it. But since you asked, I do think what you are doing is overkill. You do not need to master an Assimil type lesson before going on - using one of these according to the company instructions or my or someone else's modified version of this means that you can probably get the same results with less expenditure of effort and time.

I was born in a obscure village in São Paulo, Brazil, son of dutch parents. My knowlodge of english and german came through Assimil. Is it perfect? No. But it helps a lot when you have no option.
One thing that strikes me as noteworthy is how exactly you are using these materials to supplement each other and the importance of identifying and using good materials in the first place. Assimil is great for this kind of learning, but as you note, a large number of autodidactic materials are much inferior to Assimil. It would be interesting to see you work through a Colloquial or TYS manual that is much more phrase book style, but it's the only resource out there. For example, if I am studying a lesser-studied language, the only resources available may be a phrasebookish Colloquial book or a DLI or FSI 'Headstart' course that lacks the substance of Assimil. This also raises research questions about methods and materials for autodidactic learning that need greater attention.

And once the Academy gets underway, providing all sorts of guidance to autodidacts will indeed require further research into methodology.

I am all for it. Some people have problems confusing languages if they learn them at the same time, but there is no need for that (Spanish and Italian, perhaps, but not Italian and German). The only other issue is that you could make faster progress with one if you were to concentrate all your energy on it, but if you goal is to learn both, then you would have to stop that one and concentrate everything on the second, which would mean you could forget the first. Best to try both at the same time. If you do confuse them, then stop one and just do the other, but if you don't: full steam ahead. Good luck to you!
First of all I would like to thank you for the quality content of this channel. I've been acquainted with your website for some years, glad to know you have an active UA-cam channel. I would like to know if, in your experience, a dormant language can be retrieved and what would be the best approach when attempting it. When I was a kid, I used to go to a Japanese school, I had passed the JLPT N-3 and was heading to N-2 when I stopped practicing the language altogether (at age 11). I haven't been exposed to the language for more than twenty years now. I can understand simple conversations, but can hardly speak, and even though some kanjis look familiar, I can only read hiragana and katakana. I do recall how the language works (and find grammar explanations difficult to follow, as I learnt it differently). What would be your suggestion (if you have any)? Thank you
Thank you for your kind words of appreciation. I don't think there is a special "recovery" technique for long dormant languages. Start studying it like any beginner would, and, if you are lucky, it will prove to be easier than it will for most, and maybe even some things will consciously come back. Good luck to you!

Hi Professor Arguelles. I have a question: how do you go about applying your method to dialects not covered by Assimil / Linguaphone? Does it make sense to source a host of untranslated dialogues of various language ability levels in your dialect, shadow them first, then actually read them and figure out the grammatical / vocabulary points that are unclear on your own and then shadow again? It will admittedly take longer than working with pre-prepared courses, but it should work regardless, shouldn't it?
I haven't studied any living languages in depth that were not covered by these two publishers. If I wanted to learn something they don't have, like Kurdish or Pashto, in more depth, I would look to l'Asiathèque as that can be pressed into service for this as well. If I wanted to learn something even more exotic, I think I would go to Bible dot is and work with audio-dramas of the New Testament.
@@ProfASAr Hm, I guess studying the Bible would give you knowledge of grammar, as well as of literary and poetic vocabulary, but not of the day-to-day language. My question is more about languages covered by Assimil, but only as far as some dialects are concerned. For example, Québécois French is very different from French French when it comes to day-to-day use (even the most basic language formulas can be different, not to mention the prosody and accent). You could learn the literary form shared by the two dialects, but this would not help you in your daily interactions. It would be similar with Brazilian and Portuguese Portuguese, whose spoken versions are *very* different from one another, but the formal language is the same (but in this case both are covered by Assimil, I think)
@@Limemill Ah, I thought that you were using "dialect" in a more poetic sense, but you meant it literally. Well, Assimil does have some perhaps rather rare and maybe out of print volumes for many of the regional languages of France. For Québécois, I would just get a good audiobook and shadow that. Or again, there is an audio-drama New Testament in Québécois on the site I referenced before.

However, I'm quite concerned about getting a language partner to practice because It's hard for me to find one. Prof. Arguelles, In your experience, can we study a language well without a partner? By "well" I mean just the level of advanced beginner. I haven't found any of your videos about learning partner, sir. ---- P.s: My difficulty of finding partner could be because I live in a rural area in South East Asia and neither Japanese nor Swedish is learning language here (so no offline partner). I also did try to get online partner via apps like Tandem , however, I couldn't keep in touch with anybody after 3 months. I believe the source difficulty might be from my personality that can only communicate well in face-to-face contact.
Professor could you recommend me how to learn Germans grammar especially (der,die,das, Akkusativ etc)? I have really harsh time learning German. I'm Polish native speaker and I know to some extent English but I don't know hot to approach with these things in German.
These things can be difficult, but it is important not to make them more of a psychological barrier than they need to me. If you work with methods like Assimil, learning the language holistically, then these should become easier and more intuitive over time. Beyond that, you need to get a grammar workbook like Hueber's Lehr- und Übungsbuch der deutschen Grammatik and drill those points that you find still do remain difficult after time. Good luck with this!
Do you think, with Assimil, it is good to do the active phase right away with each lesson and to do the spaced repetition as reviewing the lesson at day 1, 7, 15 30...

Assimil did publish a Russian course in English in this same format a number of years back. It is out of print, but you should be able to track down a used and/or digitized version.

I agree. I think the good professor has said in the past that extensive reading is the most efficient way to amass vocabulary - nonetheless, it would still be great to hear him discuss supplemental approaches to maximising the efficiency of vocabulary acquisition.
I now learn and memorize vocabulary by listening, using the new vocabulary in sentences, reading the words, a lot of repetition, and writing about topics you are interested in, using those vocabulary words. That seems to work for me. What is even better is when i finally remembered how to use some grammer structures by writing sentences. That gave me a boost in motivation. The advanced level in languages is the most difficult.
@@juliusjohnson5967 I started doing this today, I was tired about flashcards on anki, it had been exhausting for me and I wasn't learning almost nothing, like, I remembered most of the words when I read the sentence, but I forgot it absolutely 5 seconds later. But writing it down I was able to remember some words, and the whole text I'm studying help me to remember some words by context (I didn't put the translation together) and I really hope it's gonna work. Does anyone know where one can get a copy of prof. Arguelles' a handbook of korean verbal conjugation? It doesnt seem to be anywhere expect the publisher site for x3-4 the price it should be. If anyone has any advice please let me know.

@@Christopher_Stead You do have a point the appeal of an exhaustive collection of endings is a miracle it even exists. Im still a super beginner in korean so i dont know what percentage of the endings are used etc and the layout and format of the book etc. There are no samples except the blurriest picture ive ever seen on publisher site haha. Also its hardcover which makes it beautiful so another thing to consider. Another thing that adds to its value is that the language feels infinite without something like this telling me that its not (idk just a me thing) it feels x3 harder than any other language, similiar to a joyo kanji list or something or 1817 한자 list etc

It depends what you do with the language. I see the passé simple more than any other tense, since the only thing I do with French is read literature.

In the case of French, Italian and Spanish, I think it could be profitable to spend additional time listening _passively_ while doing other things such as driving a car, doing physical exercise, doing housework, etc. One could still have sessions working actively with an Assimil book, but could also spend time listening to other materials such as the Linguaphone courses dating from the 1960s and 1970s. Over time I think one could gain considerably in comprehension simply through repeated listening. However I'm pretty sure this would only be profitable for the languages sharing a lot of common vocabulary with English. In the case of something more exotic (Linguaphone Polish or Linguaphone Arabic, for example) one would hardly gain anything by passively listening - perhaps other than gaining familiarity with the sounds.
I do more active listening than passive listening. I enjoy listening to my foreign language even though i might not understand some of it. I think enjoying the process does give me motivation to continue.
You can passively listen to materials that you have actively studied before. That allows you to build up a base level of comprehension in any languages, even ones that are very different from the ones you speak. For example, I'm learning Turkish, and I'm using the LingQ Ministories - I read one new story every day, put the sentences from there in my Anki deck (which is full of "i+1" sentences from various sources), and listen to the Ministories in my free time. Sometimes I actively listen, sometimes passively. That way, every day I cover new material and do loads of repetition.
This is exactly why I suggest separating out the shadowing / audio portion at this stage and doing it while walking / running / doing other things.

Follow-up:
So after you completed the Lesson 3 review, you would have put the small yellow tab into Lesson 4 (next time you get to week 1, that's where you're at) and moved the orange tab into wherever the yellow tab was in week 2.
The next day, you would then begin with your week 2 review, followed by finishing what you could not complete in Lesson 30. The next day, the orange tab would be in week 3, and you'd start on Lesson 31. The orange tab eventually loops back around to Week 1, and so on. N'est-ce pas?
Currently reviewing some volumes in a hybrid fashion of these two videos:

15m reading aloud loop around the book
It's all technically review/reinforcement (2 generations of Assimil per language) so not doing any set review schemes like this. But it looks like an ideal starting plan once I dig into Using French.

As a French speaker, the Assimil lesson 30 is literary French, good if you want to be a writer. But the day-to-day French is more colloquial.
As a non-French speaker, it is absolutely necessary if you want to be a READER of French.

To be specific, you never hear or rarely read subjunctive imperfect and past perfect, neither the indicative past and past anterior

Well, since this is the intermediate level, you will not be "learning" these writings systems so much as polishing and refining them and developing your fluency in reading them. So, the process would not be fundamentally different, just slower. I would do more of the shadowing while reading the text, and incorporate scriptorium into the overall process sooner rather than later. Hope that helps?

I've noticed a few mistakes in your text, don't take it personally , I am just trying to help as an English speaker and a fellow language learner, I have made a lot of mistakes too and I still do.
1st- You should say "I am learning French" France is the country.
2nd- Brazil is written with "Z" in English. And finally, You should capitalize the names of countries, nationalities, and languages.

Those two Assimil books by Tony Bulger are the high watermark of language learning material, I think I've done both of them twice now. Shame they have some outdated references to Minitel and technology in the last two weeks of lessons in the "with ease" book, there's little to fault otherwise.

This excellent book will give you answers how to correctly learn a foreign language with a minimum of your time and effort. This book answers many of the questions that everyone faces when learning a language. Good luck with your important work!

I think you will be interested in the book "Polyglot Notes" by Yuriy Ivantsiv. The book contains a lot of useful tips, both long-known techniques and techniques that involve the use of modern technology of the 21st century. But what attracted me most of all to the book were recommendations from psychology and pedagogy on how to learn a language, how much time to devote to language learning, why language is forgotten without periodic practice, why several languages get mixed up in my head, how to solve the problems that cause many people to lose motivation to learn foreign languages. In the book, all the information is presented concretely, very motivating. You and the author of the book have a lot of similar ideas, for example, only systematic, disciplined and thorough work over a long period of time is the way to success. Just to clarify, you suggest that the day one buys Using French or Perfectionnement X:
15 minutes/day blind shadow the entire book
Then
15 minutes/day shadow the book reading English
Then add a 2nd 15 min/day session:
A-15 minutes/day shadow the book reading French
B-15 minutes/day analysis & cleaning up grammar
So the A sessions function as review as long as you're behind where you are in the analysis, and as preview as long as you're ahead. Of course, the previewing becomes easier each round as you've further consolidated grammar and assimilated parts of the earlier lessons.
My truncated audio for Using French is just under 2 hours, so every 8 days you would complete the book and start anew, with further understanding each time. If it takes 2-3 days per lesson on analysis, then we're looking at 140-210 days to complete (175 to average). In that time you would have been able to shadow the book 21-22 times! Certainly a good amount of practice to assimilate! Maybe somewhere in the middle there change your shadowing to reviewing the first book or something, spend 8 days doing that, then back to the new one.
I also noted that you just do the grammar exercises orally instead of writing them down in the Scriptorium. Preferences for that? At some point, perhaps not with the constructed dialogues about a couple meeting because they have the same moped, but for Hugo or Proust, then you would introduce practicing Scriptorium with this book, too?
I like the use of the Assimil (or Linguaphone) course as the guidebook for grammar exercises as well. That was precisely my plan for when I begin analysis of the Icelandic Linguaphone - to analyze a lesson, take whatever grammar points they talk about then look at the old TYS book and do some of those exercises, and so on. Good to know it will be a fruitful endeavor. I have a compulsion of wanting to do everything "in order" which causes trepidation in hopping around a grammar course!

Yes, David, that is all about right. It's a flexible and adaptable system, though - the different stages and kinds of shadowing should be done as needed / effective and not in set formula. And yes, I would do the literary excerpts in scriptorium over the chatty ones. I do think grammatical exercises are best done orally.

I used to write down all the sentences while doing grammar exercises - but it takes way too much time (and is boring). I'd like to ask one question - what do you do, when you see (while doing an exercise from a book), that you get an idea, but make some mistakes - do you mark this exercise to repeat later? Do you do the same exercise later (for example, the next day), or do you just proceed and worry about it when you meet the same problem next time. Or maybe you do later more exercises related to the problematic grammar area?
Hello Marcin! Sorry, but I don't have a set answer to your question - it depends on the nature and degree of the error(s). If it is systemic, I read up on it; if it is casual, I just do it over; if it complex, I try to find some pattern drills, etc.

Maybe I'm the only one, but I'm unclear on how you plan out the review schedule. Are you choosing the review activity (comparative analysis, for example) based on your understanding of the lesson? Or is it completely based on the number of days since you first shadowed the lesson?
Maybe I said it too quickly.
I block off each 7 days with a blue label to the side.
I put a yellow label at the top of the last lesson I have reviewed inside each 7 days.
I put an orange label to indicate the last one of these that I have reviewed.
So, I did lesson 30 (new) and reviewed lesson 3 (from the first block). When done, I would move the yellow label for the first week to lesson 4 and the orange label up yellow label in the 2nd week (e.g., to lesson 8).
So, when I go back the next day and finish lesson 30, I will review, lesson 8, then move the yellow label up to the 3rd week (e.g., lesson 15).
The next day, I will learn 31, review 15, move the orange label up to the 4th week, and so finish 31/start 32 and do, e.g., 22.
When I have caught up to the week where I am learning, I will go back and start review lesson 4, etc.
This sounds more and more complicated as I write it out. I do hope it is clear????

Hi Mr Aguelles, How would you change these lessons when studying Asian languages that don't use latin script like Chinese and Japanese for example ?
I would include Scriptorium from the beginning rather than, as I said in the previous video, making that the final stage.
@@ProfASAr I see, So every new kanji you would write it in a notebook( your scriptorium) and then you would review it periodically. The problem for beginners + assimil Japanese would be the start where near to 100% are unknown symbols...
@@DouglasSilva-ys6lw This is an inevitable problem with Japanese and Chinese, not just with Assimil, is it not? I believe Assimil even has special supplementary volumes to help with this now that I think of it.
@@ProfASAr I just noted those script volumes in Assimil. I speak, read and write Japanese and, where the language itself is beautifully simple and logical, the script is not. (Compared to Croatian which I am learning, where the written language is simple and logical but there are seven cases and three genders. Sigh.)

Question for you, when initially going through lessons 1-50, at what point do you decide it’s ok to move on to a new lesson? I know you stated roughly that you should move through around 1 lesson per day (unless the lesson is particularly long), but I’d feel like the information goes in and goes right out for me.
If you have leisure to spend time studying a language for 1+ hours a day (as I’ve made it a habit to rise at 5 AM and study prior to my work day, and family wakes up), would you recommend mastering each lesson before moving too far ahead? For instance, I won’t advance further than 3 lessons ahead until I’ve at least been able to read the target language aloud, and tell myself word for word what the translation is in English. I’ll go through and highlight what I’ve already learned, and internalized by heart, and then the following day or session, I’ll ignore those portions, and only focus on the unhighlighted portions; once everything is highlighted for the lesson, I’ll then allow myself to advance to a fresh lesson, but still cap myself to not push past 3 new lessons (for the sake of having some variety).
Does this strategy make sense? Is it something you would recommend, or do you think it’s overkill, and I should allow myself to move on earlier than this (it definitely takes significantly longer to complete each lesson, even at an hour or more per day). Currently, I’ve completed the first 15 lessons this way, and working my way through (Assimil Spanish with Ease).

If using this method as you describe using it is working well for you, then just keep at it. But since you asked, I do think what you are doing is overkill. You do not need to master an Assimil type lesson before going on - using one of these according to the company instructions or my or someone else's modified version of this means that you can probably get the same results with less expenditure of effort and time.

I was born in a obscure village in São Paulo, Brazil, son of dutch parents. My knowlodge of english and german came through Assimil. Is it perfect? No. But it helps a lot when you have no option.

One thing that strikes me as noteworthy is how exactly you are using these materials to supplement each other and the importance of identifying and using good materials in the first place. Assimil is great for this kind of learning, but as you note, a large number of autodidactic materials are much inferior to Assimil. It would be interesting to see you work through a Colloquial or TYS manual that is much more phrase book style, but it's the only resource out there. For example, if I am studying a lesser-studied language, the only resources available may be a phrasebookish Colloquial book or a DLI or FSI 'Headstart' course that lacks the substance of Assimil.
This also raises research questions about methods and materials for autodidactic learning that need greater attention.
Hello Paul and thank you, as always, for the substantive comments indicating further directions for research and attention. I will consider doing another demonstration using another method. And once the Academy gets underway, providing all sorts of guidance to autodidacts will indeed require further research into methodology.

No, I do not. I tend to do the grammar orally, and I learn the vocabulary from the dialogues, not as individual words.

I am all for it. Some people have problems confusing languages if they learn them at the same time, but there is no need for that (Spanish and Italian, perhaps, but not Italian and German). The only other issue is that you could make faster progress with one if you were to concentrate all your energy on it, but if you goal is to learn both, then you would have to stop that one and concentrate everything on the second, which would mean you could forget the first. Best to try both at the same time. If you do confuse them, then stop one and just do the other, but if you don't: full steam ahead. Good luck to you!
First of all I would like to thank you for the quality content of this channel. I've been acquainted with your website for some years, glad to know you have an active UA-cam channel. I would like to know if, in your experience, a dormant language can be retrieved and what would be the best approach when attempting it. When I was a kid, I used to go to a Japanese school, I had passed the JLPT N-3 and was heading to N-2 when I stopped practicing the language altogether (at age 11). I haven't been exposed to the language for more than twenty years now. I can understand simple conversations, but can hardly speak, and even though some kanjis look familiar, I can only read hiragana and katakana. I do recall how the language works (and find grammar explanations difficult to follow, as I learnt it differently). What would be your suggestion (if you have any)? Thank you
Thank you for your kind words of appreciation. I don't think there is a special "recovery" technique for long dormant languages. Start studying it like any beginner would, and, if you are lucky, it will prove to be easier than it will for most, and maybe even some things will consciously come back. Good luck to you!

Hi Professor Arguelles. I have a question: how do you go about applying your method to dialects not covered by Assimil / Linguaphone? Does it make sense to source a host of untranslated dialogues of various language ability levels in your dialect, shadow them first, then actually read them and figure out the grammatical / vocabulary points that are unclear on your own and then shadow again? It will admittedly take longer than working with pre-prepared courses, but it should work regardless, shouldn't it?
I haven't studied any living languages in depth that were not covered by these two publishers. If I wanted to learn something they don't have, like Kurdish or Pashto, in more depth, I would look to l'Asiathèque as that can be pressed into service for this as well. If I wanted to learn something even more exotic, I think I would go to Bible dot is and work with audio-dramas of the New Testament.
@@ProfASAr Hm, I guess studying the Bible would give you knowledge of grammar, as well as of literary and poetic vocabulary, but not of the day-to-day language. My question is more about languages covered by Assimil, but only as far as some dialects are concerned. For example, Québécois French is very different from French French when it comes to day-to-day use (even the most basic language formulas can be different, not to mention the prosody and accent). You could learn the literary form shared by the two dialects, but this would not help you in your daily interactions. It would be similar with Brazilian and Portuguese Portuguese, whose spoken versions are *very* different from one another, but the formal language is the same (but in this case both are covered by Assimil, I think)
@@Limemill Ah, I thought that you were using "dialect" in a more poetic sense, but you meant it literally. Well, Assimil does have some perhaps rather rare and maybe out of print volumes for many of the regional languages of France. For Québécois, I would just get a good audiobook and shadow that. Or again, there is an audio-drama New Testament in Québécois on the site I referenced before.

I'm learning Japanese and Swedish at the same time now, just for fun since I love these two languages' speech sounds.I'm enjoy learning the 2 languages. However, I'm quite concerned about getting a language partner to practice because It's hard for me to find one.

P.s: My difficulty of finding partner could be because I live in a rural area in South East Asia and neither Japanese nor Swedish is learning language here (so no offline partner). I also did try to get online partner via apps like Tandem , however, I couldn't keep in touch with anybody after 3 months. I believe the source difficulty might be from my personality that can only communicate well in face-to-face contact.

Professor could you recommend me how to learn Germans grammar especially (der,die,das, Akkusativ etc)? I have really harsh time learning German. I'm Polish native speaker and I know to some extent English but I don't know hot to approach with these things in German.
These things can be difficult, but it is important not to make them more of a psychological barrier than they need to me. If you work with methods like Assimil, learning the language holistically, then these should become easier and more intuitive over time. Beyond that, you need to get a grammar workbook like Hueber's Lehr- und Übungsbuch der deutschen Grammatik and drill those points that you find still do remain difficult after time. Good luck with this!

Day 2: review L1 & learn L2
….

I watched your demonstration with great interest. I would like to try your method. However I want to learn Russian. It seems there is no book with audio files available from Assimil. They now have a e-course which I have no interest in. It there another beginner book that uses the parallel text with audio method from another company?
Assimil did publish a Russian course in English in this same format a number of years back. It is out of print, but you should be able to track down a used and/or digitized version.

I agree. I think the good professor has said in the past that extensive reading is the most efficient way to amass vocabulary - nonetheless, it would still be great to hear him discuss supplemental approaches to maximising the efficiency of vocabulary acquisition.
I now learn and memorize vocabulary by listening, using the new vocabulary in sentences, reading the words, a lot of repetition, and writing about topics you are interested in, using those vocabulary words. That seems to work for me. What is even better is when i finally remembered how to use some grammer structures by writing sentences. That gave me a boost in motivation. The advanced level in languages is the most difficult.
@@juliusjohnson5967 I started doing this today, I was tired about flashcards on anki, it had been exhausting for me and I wasn't learning almost nothing, like, I remembered most of the words when I read the sentence, but I forgot it absolutely 5 seconds later. But writing it down I was able to remember some words, and the whole text I'm studying help me to remember some words by context (I didn't put the translation together) and I really hope it's gonna work. @@Christopher_Stead You do have a point the appeal of an exhaustive collection of endings is a miracle it even exists. Im still a super beginner in korean so i dont know what percentage of the endings are used etc and the layout and format of the book etc. There are no samples except the blurriest picture ive ever seen on publisher site haha. Also its hardcover which makes it beautiful so another thing to consider. Another thing that adds to its value is that the language feels infinite without something like this telling me that its not (idk just a me thing) it feels x3 harder than any other language, similiar to a joyo kanji list or something or 1817 한자 list etc
