I grew up with NO money and only ever wore nicer attire for military formal dining, weddings and funerals.
It is really appreciated for Gentlemen's Gazette to provide this guidance on classy attire.
I know that some products are favored, understood. But I have had to be the definition of utilitarian, the knowledge is welcome.
    Thank you Sven.

Amazing you mentioned St. Hiliare. My father in law imported it into the US for decades. It is amazing! We use to talk about the price, and that he needed to push to have it marketed on a national level. It is France's oldest sparkling wine, and Thomas Jefferson had it in his wine cellar. That image of St. Hiliare brought back a lot of memories. Thank you.

@@putturin4723 Lightweight, sharp and strong and about the cheapest pocket knives you can find, I've had the same no.7 carbonne for 12years now, yes I have to sharpen it from time to time, to keep it razor sharp but it has never been blunt in all those years of borderline abusive use. What makes you say they are terrible, I'm interested in your experience as mine is great!

    • @Scum8ag
      @Scum8ag 5 років тому +5

Absolutely! They are also quite stylish and much less threatening than your usual EDC knives. I carry mine even in my suit pocket. I would advise against carbon if you aim to use it as a snack knife since it catches rust quite easily. I was about to get a Böker Urban Trapper but after picking up the Opi I never even got around to it. Love it!

The easiest thing to do is to buy your clothes at Brooks Brothers - you will never look bad. Thirty-nine years ago, the day before my wedding, I needed to have some emergency tailoring done. The Brooks Brothers tailor had missed altering one side seam on the beautiful black hairline striped suit I bought for the special occasion. I took it to my local tailor, a true Old World craftsman of the highest skill. When I handed the jacket to him, he inspected it very closely, repeatedly asking me in his thick accent, "How much did you pay for this?" He found it hard to believe that such a quality garment could be sold at such a fair price. As I said, go to Brooks Brothers.

Raphael, yesterday I was going to go to go to the dentist and run some errands and before I left for the appointment, I began watching this video and I saw your recommendation for the Nivea Sensitive Skin Aftershave. When I went to the grocery store afterward, I made a point to pick it up and I used it this morning. I can honestly say that it was greatly superior to the aftershave I used before, and I am very satisfied with it. I'm going to use this rather than my old one. Thanks Raphael and keep up the good work!

Can't agree more about the Nivea post shave Balm. Had terribly sensitive skin as a young teen but was required to be clean shaven for school and so after trying almost everything at my pharmacy, I was bought this as a gift and it was amazing. Has a cooling effect after shaving and is non-greasy. Smells great and leaves my skin feeling normal instead if that sensitive post shave feeling.

If you are not sure of fountain pens, and want to try them, buy a Jinhao 911, looks cool, all metalic with black plastic where you hold it. For someone who does not care, or does not have the knowledge or fine eye for fountain pens writing quality, this one is great, and it costs less than 3 USD. It even has a hooded nib if you are insecure of using them in public.

As a fountain pen guy I can confirm that the Pilot Metropolitan is pretty much the best value for money out there! They just bumped up the price of the product, however, so you might have to hunt around to find it available at $15. Good alternatives to the Metro (if you want that classic look) include the Platinum Plaisir and the Italix Parson's Essential.

I took about a month to shave (I've been a beard man for the last 15 years and decided to grow it back), but I decided to go with the Nivea sensitive after shave balm and it was fantastic. For the entire time I had my beard I would just dry shave my neck and the edge of the beard and then leave it without any kind of skin or beard care but I'm going to stick with wet shaving those parts and using the after shave balm, and keeping the beard groomed and fresh with some beard oil/balm. Thanks for the tips!

Here in the California wine country (Napa) we have a brand called "Two Buck Chuck" which is excess high quality wine which has been rebottled. This helps limit the supply of the "high quality" wine without dumping the excess. At wine tastings here in the valley sommeliers will often set up tastings where Two Buck Chuck is pitted against well known wines. Once the joke is revealed they will make comments about people who taste the price tag rather than the wine.

Cheap but good! I love this kind of thing! Another affordable, really good, gentleman's item: Buck 503 Prince. This is the perfect sized pocket knife: as small as possible but large enough; lock blade; stainless; easy to sharpen; tough; thin in the pocket; pleasing to the eye. Still made in the U.S. My parents gave me my first 503 when I was a kid in the 1970s, I lost it. In the 1980s, as a young adult, I bought a new 503 because no other pocket knife I'd owned was quite as good. I've carried it ever since. My first one had a wood inlay in the handle. My current one from the 80s has a fiber composite handle inlay, but I see they're back to using real wood when I view their website.

What I did was pick a particular accessory that I would invest in and people would start to notice more. I started with hats when I was in college. Moved from ball caps to flat caps to trillbies and now real fedoras. Then moved to ties. Plain neckties and maybe some fancy tie knots. Then added blazers and sport coats. Now I'm fluffing out my suit collection. I haven't worn a polo to my business casual office in 6 months. You'll still turn heads no matter what but if you star small, your confidence will build up and you can start adding more and more.

Millenial is a wide range and it would never apply to all of them.

I strongly agree with the Metropolitan. I received a torrent of compliments from many pretty ladies in college for the black one. I even received compliments in an interview. A much better option to do that sealing signature with than a ballpoint. I will also recommend the Pilot custom 74 for those with a slightly higher budget.

Love the Better than Bouillon stuff...have it in every flavor. Great substitute for anyone who can't find that brand of fish sauce, is just anchovy paste. Great in pasta, salad dressings, etc.

Don't forget German Riesling :). And good call on the inexpensive tomato knife. Expensive filet knifes are high carbon and won't flex. A cheap flexible blade often does a much better job, of fish for example.

Fountain pen: Platinum PLT-5000: a gold nib pen for about 60 dollars. Fantastic pen and one of my go-to writing instruments as EDC. Might be a bit small if you have large hands though. Much better than the Metropolitan.

I use Nivea post shave balm. It works great. The only problem is that if it’s hot out it feels kind of sticky and uncomfortable. Other than that, great product

For Scissors really go vintage. Used ones, completely made of metal are usually of much higher quality and are easy to maintain and resharpen. I use two I inherited from my granddad. They work like new and much better than anything you can find in a store today. And with knives any knive with a straight edge and good blade will be able to cut tomatoes effortlessly when it is just sharp enough. To me it is an essential gentlemans skill to know how to effectively sharpen a knive to that level even if he has nothing but the bottom of a porcelain cup as a sharpening tool.
