Always a Perfect Fit! 3D Printed Speaker Adapters - How to DIY

  • If you are installing aftermarket speakers into a vehicle custom speaker adapters are needed to adapt the speaker to the vehicle's mounting pattern. While aftermarket adapters are available, they typically don't perfectly match the aftermarket speaker. In the past we would often times use a router and other fabrication methods to make adapters out of acrylic or ABS sheet plastic, but now with 3d printers becoming more readily available for the average consumer they are becoming a solid choice, given you know the process! Let's dive in!

    You may want to add fillets to the edges to increase the material holding the shaft that the speaker mounts too, to the base that mounts to the vehicle. The vibrations might break those layer lines apart eventually. Also viewers note, he used ABS in this video. If you attempt to do this with PLA it wont last long (maybe 6 months if your lucky) if there is any moisture where your speakers are. it may need to be painted or something of the sort to make it water resistant if you go for a PLA route. Great video!

    • @setecastronomy_hc
      @setecastronomy_hc 2 місяці тому

      @@dreadpulse9865 You can use long nuts and bolts to hold speaker in adapter, that way you would hold down all layers compressed with screw.
      PLA should hold just fine, i have some prints left outside in the sun for 2+ years and they are still holding up. They were mostly decorations without any load on them though.

    Ever think about using a 3d scanner and importing the scan of the parts , rather than having to manually create a template and enter all the hand measurements ?
    Seems like it would be a huge timesaver for fast prototyping .

    • @CarAudioFabrication
      @CarAudioFabrication  2 місяці тому +2

      This isn't how 3d scanning works. With 3d scanning you export a mesh, that usually isn't perfect. To perfect it you would create features in your modeling software that match the features of the real world part. You basically reverse engineer it. What I did for a simple adapter is faster and more efficient than 3d scanning and going through the same steps.

    Any experience using ASA instead of ABS for car parts? I am planning some pods and planned on using ASA instead of ABS due to it being more UV resistant and rumored to be easier to print vs ABS. I have never used either fliament type and have been printing for years with PETG which won't hold up to the interior temps the car will experience in my area.
