I usually use a vegetable tanned one. because I used chrome tanned one for my first project., but It wasn't hard enough, so It was hard to make a good edge. But if I have a chance to use it again I will try it and let you know the result thanks!

but what grit sandpaper? You did not mention it.
I think depending on your leather work I usually use 200 to 1000.
