Thank you sooooo much! I have been trying yo know how to replace the bootlid struts for some time now for my LS430 UL. I was skeptical to do on my own and wanted the Lexus service to do but since I did my front bonnet struts myself, I was sure the rear should be a lot easier. You folks a STAR 🌟! Thank you from Qatar 🇶🇦 😊
Thanks for this video, I just replaced my trunk struts on my 2006 LS 430 Lexus. Took me a little longer than your video but I got it done. Now my trunk is easy to open.
I'm happy this has helped a few of you! It was the first time we have ever done this, and I wanted to put it on UA-cam so others wouldn't have to struggle, or pay someone to do this - hope you saved money by doing it yourselves!
Old video or not it's still relevant for my '03 LS430. Working in the dark as usual I didn't notice the clips that must be removed first on the original lifts. You video made that obvious and the replacement was easy after that. Thanks much for posting it and Happy 2016.
@@DigitalBathInAZ According to UA-cam, this video was uploaded on October 3, 2013. The reply comment by @balesguy was posted 8 years ago (UA-cam doesn't get more specific than that) which would have been sometime in 2016, making the reply 3 years after the video was uploaded, and thus his comment, "Old video or not it's still relevant for my '03 LS430," meaning even though it's a 3-year old video it's still applicable and helpful. I hope that clears things up for you. BTW, I too find this video helpful since, old video or not (almost 11 years old now), it's still relevant for my '06 LS430.
Thank you so much for posting this perfect instructional video. I am a 63 year old woman, and I just replaced the trunk structs on my 2002 SC430 all by myself! I followed your instructions and everything worked exactly as you showed in the video.
Greetings from England! I hope your boot (trunk) lid still goes up and down OK after all these years! The LS 430 is a good long lasting car (except for the boot struts perhaps) so maybe you still have it. There is always a bit of fear that these dangerous high pressure devices are going to explode or something, so it was very kind of you to make this video. It is a real confidence builder. I have heard (although I don't know how true it is) that a main dealer will charge a few hundred pounds (not dollars!) to supply and fix a pair of these.
@@jkennedy4u How lovely of you to reply! We shall never meet, and there's no profit in it for you, so how very kind of you to bring a little extra joy into another's life! I shall attempt my own repair soon with the added confidence of having seen it done. Thanks again.
Shop wanted $400 for shocks, if they could find them. Said they would install free. Bought shocks on ebay for 2$20 and installed myself in minutes. Thank you for the great video.
A piece of advice for you out there looking for changing out gas struts. Just had this replacement done now, and I found that there's no need to bring the C-clamp out. It's a tough job to do and unecessary. Just push the bolt in and it will slide right in without complication. Also on my replacement struts, these bolts were included.
Thanks, helped alot. I had to push up on the trunk quite a bit for them to click in. Now instead it being an effort to lift, it's effort to close. And the trunk does lift itself when you get near the half way open point.
I've just noticed... I don't think we put the clips back on! Not sure if the new ones allowed for them, or not... So, see if this applies to yours, or not!
So by replacing the trunk struts, when you click on your key remote for the trunk it should pop up fully open to the top? Thank for this video, made it look really easy"
NO - at least not for me. When I use my remote, or open inside the car, it simply opens - the trunk lid does not go fully up... I have to push mine up. The struts hold the trunk lid open, preventing it from falling down. I hope this helped you!
OK - I just watched my video again... When you click to open, it does just open- But, you need to start the lifting process - no pressure pushing to lift... the hydraulic strut helps out on that part! Funny the things we get use to and then take for granted! ALSO, I've just noticed my husband didn't put the clips back on... can't recall if he did it later, or not. I guess we saw it worked and got all carried away with ourselves, not even paying attention to the clips... or, perhaps these struts didn't require clips. I hope your installation goes smoothly!
Your directions were flawless! But let me ask, is the trunk supposed to open by itself once the trunk button on the fob is pressed? Mine unlocks but the new struts don’t lift the lid... they are apparently not powerful enough. I’m not sure if it should lift open or not.
I have to initiate the lift on mine, too. What I appreciate most, is the trunk lid staying up when I'm using trunk space. That is the main reason I replaced.
I have a 2005 sc430 and the retaining clips are not as easy to get to as shown in this video. I do not see an illustration on my model. It seems as though I have to remove a few star bolts of the hinges to gain access, is there another way?
Wanted to let you know - This link isn't the pair I ordered. From what I read, they appear to be the same, with exception this pair is offered with Amazon Prime and is less costly. Just make sure they fit your year/model. Good luck - Hope your ring in a Happy New Year!
+Amy Naadimuthu I'm so sorry - I didn't see your post until just now. If you haven't purchased yet, here's the info... I purchased from Amazon. Just make sure they are the correct ones for your auto :) Qty (2) Strong Arm 6415 LEXUS LS430 2001 to 2006 Trunk Lift Supports Struts Shocks - sold by Strongarm
I don't have a close up photo of the clip. It's a small band, clamped on the strut being removed in the beginning of video. The new strut did not require a clip.
We did! Guess we should have left it open, removed old strut, and closed after installing the new one. I hope we don't have to do this again- But, if we do, you've been helpful to share this information. Thank you!
Thank you and I installed them myself. It is a crime that repair shops charge $250 labor to install them.

Thanks for showing. I just finished installing new ones on my Lexus.

thank you JKennedy! Like that Southern accent. Kennedy of the South here too!
2 clean ls 430s. Thanks for the help !

Great video! Changed my trunk struts in 5 minutes.
Thanks for your direction! I did it tonight without any difficulties!

Excellent video. Nothing else you need to know. Getting a few tools together takes longer than replacing the struts.

Did you use OEM Toyota struts or an aftermarket brand?
Watched your video and it worked great for our 2006 Porsche Boxster. Thank you. And by the way the clips are already on the new cylinders.
Thank you... I didn't know that! Happy all worked out well for you!
Man, you make that look so EASY!
Thank you for making the video, it is much appreciated!. I just received my new trunk struts and will put them on today.

easy, struts are 20 bucks on ebay, you would probably pay 200 for this at dealer.
Is that Paula Dean?
Nah :)
Not relevant for a 2005 Lexus.
Sorry, but you're wrong -- this is directly relevant for the '05 LS430, which is also the identical procedure for my '06 LS430.
Lmao you should have done the work yourself mam,,,
