  • A look at the Triumph Speedmaster after nearly two years of ownership. The good, the bad and the beautiful. Acceleration, brakes, shocks, digital display, mpg - it's all in there and...bonus...Thor engineered 2nd gear!

Hey, its Phill here in Vancouver saying hello again! I love your videos and your bike (almost as much as I love Speedmaster!) Wish I could send you a picture or two. I am so happy you are still thrilled with your machine, as am I and it seems, countless other folks who have the Speedmaster. It is certainly a wonderful bike indeed! Mine is the Cranberry red one, same brown quilted seat as yours with the matching pillion seat and back rest, white wall tires, bobber style straight handle bars and bar end mirrors and a Dart Marlin fly screen.
Anyway, one comment on your review is that here in North America the lighting is configured differently than in the UK. We do not have daylight running lights on the Speedmaster, in fact we do not even have the on/off switch on the left handle bar. So, our headlight (and tail light) are on continuously. We have the small switch in front of the handle bar, but that only switches between high and low beam, so we cannot "flash" the lights like you can. We can only turn the high beam on and back to low beam, rather than "flash"! Perhaps Transport Canada, our vehicle approval authority, thought that "flashing" was rude or something so they took away our ability to do so. So, the guy in the US who told you it is different here is actually correct.
But the review is great, and I am completely in agreement with it. Good job and keep up the good work Foz!

Thanks for revisiting the light question. I’m the one in the US who commented on the DRL on your previous video. My bike simply does not have that switch at all on the bars. Only the trigger. I wish I could show a photo. Therefore the light is always on , no DRL. Great video and I still love my Speedmaster.

Thanks for watching again...yea, I was clearly wrong, a few of your countrymen and indeed Canadians have been good enough to talk about the North American differences. It's really interesting how there is a difference.

I’m awaiting mine to arrive at the dealership this month. I’ve enjoyed your videos as a great way to get acquainted with the bike - though one’s use of a windscreen is relative to height. And they help with the highway speeds here in Texas. I’ve cruised them at speeds up to 85mph, and any windscreen definitely helps to hold on.

    • @fozbox
      @fozbox  2 роки тому

Yea the screen is definitely height dependant - I had to put an extender on mine because of being a little taller which I talk about in this vid - ua-cam.com/video/pyES7o7kprc/v-deo.html

I have my own Speedmaster already but I just love to see other owners’ perspective and your review is spot on. Though I customize mine a lot with the ape bars and so on. I think the green light being on for the DRL is so that when we turn on the ‘lights’ (dipped beam) at night, the green light won’t be too distracting on the dash in the dark of the night, cheers!

Excellent review of this new classic. “Best Bonneville Triumph ever made.” A big statement, but I think that there is much truth behind the inspiration of that statement. I just purchased a 2022 Goldline Speedmaster LE because I feel the same way, am retiring soon, and want something classy that I will not want to sell. It’s the attention to details, the retro look to it, but more-so, the beauty of it as a work of motorcycle art.

Two great tips for me during that excellent review.
I now understand how the light works with the switch (I've been running for 4 days with the night mode set....!)
    and
I've returned my Denali Split Sound Bomb (plus relay and wiring kit) for the plug and play Sound Bomb Mini.
What has made the bike special for me is the addition of a pair of footboards (Kit 9770117). It now feels like a real cruiser and changing up gears with my heal is a revelation....
    Thanks for the review.

      @@ursbasel730
Hi, i find it easier to ride as im not having to hunt for the forward footrests. Riding home from the dealership (prior to fitting the footboards) was strange as i certainly wasn't used to the forward controls.
The footboards are more comfortable for me, i can shift my feet around quite a bit and today i actually stood upright for a few seconds to ease my (bad) back. I certainly couldn't have done that on the forward pegs.
Cant comment on the grounding out as ive only put 260 miles on the bike. Still running in so haven't been pushing too hard. The footboards do have grounding plates, in place of the hero blobs on the pegs and they do pivot upwards if needed.

Puts a smile on my face every time I ride the Speedy - so easy to place feet down (for a 'retired' rider) - so easy to ride. Get an open face to fully enjoy the ownership. Don't like the jolts over bumps (maybe some thought into aftermarket shocks). Had to take all the quadlock and GPS stuff off my bars as they totally spoilt the look and retro feel of the machine. I have not taken the bike on a long tour yet, but it may come to the IOM with me next spring if it's all open again to experience the 36 miles of total fun. Like you, I dither as to whether to fit or remove the screen - there are after market ones that come off with a simple catch so maybe that's the answer. As you say, what's not to like. Looking to add the Bobber with apes as my second bike next to my R1250R. However, a new Bobber is $13,400, but it would probably be $15k with apes, a seat, and taxes. Hardly any used Bobbers, but there are two 2018 Speedmasters near me, both with apes. One is red with 5k miles, some Motone parts, and the brown quilted seat. The other is two-toned paint, with 900 miles, the comfort seat, and windshield. Dealers are asking roughly $10,500 for each. I might be getting a used Speedmaster over a Bobber. Closing on my house on Thursday, so I’ll be purchasing soon after.

I like these reviews but feel compelled to say that I think this bike is not a good one. I had not realised that the retro / classic / heritage thing extended to a squidgy brakes, clonky gear change, a refusal to change line when cornering, stained engine casings and shocking levels of vibration. I walked to the car park - 50 steps, and then rode it a steady 200 miles up the motorway - 27, 336 steps. So please consider carefully if this bike is for you. It isn't for me. That said, please keep up these excellent review. Did I mention it is slow? Oh how!, and I'm no street racer, just an old man trying to get passed an hgv on a single carriageway safely.

I must say I am amazed by your view of this bike - don't get me wrong I know it isn't for everyone - I just haven't had any of the issues you mention apart from the engine casing which I admit reacts badly to salted roads etc. Did you come to this bike from having a lights sports bike before?

Perhaps the Ducati Panigale V4 will be more to your liking. Or other sports bike models. I was somewhat taken back of your comment. The Triumph retros are kinda their to remind us of bygone eras. No pretences are made as to what you are saying. The bikes are not made to go a million miles an hour around bends etc etc. They have a certain sedateness and philosophy to the .
For me I like what Triumph, CCM ( England ) and Janus ( Indiana USA ) are doing. If what you are saying is correct of which I know it isn’t, why bother test riding the bike ? The brakes are more than adequate, gearbox and clutch are great. The bike is a work of art to me and a nice looking bike. Character, heritage and history. The bike can cruise 100 Kmh easily. Is it a race ? That’s why part of me is sick of doing group rides. One up man ship is not for me.
Triumphs are far more higher quality than RE and the price reflects that.
