- During our slow travel through Italy we have really fallen in love with the country and have decided to stay. In this video we share with you why we decided to buy a house in Italy, why we bought in Umbria and how this affects our plans for future travel. We also give you a first look at our new home.

Thanks for the info. A friend & I are coming to look next spring...in Umbria & Tuscany. Either she'll buy a larger place for me & her family. Or a place just for me. She & her family would be there part time & I'd be fulltime. And 6 km from town isn't far, private but not isolated!!

Congratulations, Debbie and Stign! We don't check up on our Instagram as much as we should and weren't aware. It looks like an absolutely beautiful home and area! We have seen about the kitchen customs in Italy on HGTV. We enjoyed hearing your wonderful news! Such a central location to so many places too. What is the climate there in the winter months? We'd like to do something different this upcoming winter and don't need beach weather but would prefer not bitter cold either. We have Wisconsin for that! Temperate would be just fine for us. Loved you video and are looking forward to the upcoming ones!

Congratulations! I see you settled in Umbria instead of Piedmont. Nice house! I researched almost all of Italy but I still feel like Liguria is ideal for me. Centrally located, not too cold for olive trees and other Mediterranean flora but not too hot like the south of Italy. I was surprised to to learn the process only took you six weeks! I was planning to look at houses last year on my way back from China but I ran out of time so I’m hoping to return to Europe this year to finally choose a house. I just want to learn as much as I can before I make the final decision. Unfortunately, I don’t really know anyone in Italy so I worry about getting scammed. I don’t mind living a bit out of the way but I’ve heard rumours that foreigners aren’t allowed to drive their own cars in Italy so I’ve been trying to find something ideal near a town big enough to have it’s own train station in case I’m not allowed to drive. Anyway, I look forward to more of your videos to see what you’ve discovered since moving to Umbria.
We love Umbria out of all the places we've been in Italy! Very centrally located, 2 hours north of Rome, 2 hours south of Florence and 2 hours from either coastline💞🇮🇹 We have a train station about 30 minutes to get to just about anywhere. In fact we just took a train trip to Belgium. Driving in Italy without an Italian Italian license is very much discouraged. I exchanged my US license for a Belgium license so I'm good because its an EU license. Wishing you all the best in your search for the perfect spot! ~ Debbie

I know what it means to be stopped in Spain without an international driving license so I got one of those hoping it would keep me out of trouble. Drove a rental through northern Italy once and had no trouble so I suppose I can try it again even if I must buy a car in Spain first. If all else fails, I suppose I can try to get an Italian driving license up in the German speaking region or if that doesn’t work, I’ll have to settle on a house in Spain. Thanks for the advice and best wishes in the new year!

Aww, thank you! Summer's can get into the 90's and winters down to freezing. We have humidity as well.

Good to see you back and with even better news! I have been following you for a while now since we are on a similar quest and I just knew Italy was it for you. We decided to sell everything in our homeland Holland 3 years ago and travel Europe in the hope of eventually finding our bit of paradise. Then Covid hit and we got " stuck" in Spain. We always expected to end up in Italy since it has been our number uno travel destination for many, many years. However, during our time in Spain we travelled the length and width of it and kinda fell in love with Galicia. Italy can still be a holiday destination. Today of all days we expect a reply on the offer we made on a house there! The thing we learned in the 3 years (partially because of lockdown) traveling is that for us it is more comfortable traveling with the security of a homebase to fall back on. Living out of suitcases for 3 years is overrated! Congrats you guys and I look forward to seeing more of your house and grounds.
Oh wow! Congratulations on your new home as well! We thought for sure we would end up in Portugal, we love it as well, but Umbria definitely captured our hearts. Yes, we agree, having a home base just makes so much more sense to us, packing and re packing was becoming quite the challenge! Travelling will be so much easier now💞🇮🇹
@@ouritaliandestiny7955 And talking about traveling, did you know that cats are great travellers? I grew up with 2 siamese cats and my parent trained them and took them everywhere on a little leash. They even stayed with us in hotel rooms. Maybe something to consider doing with your kitty since traveling is part of your future. All the best to you both!
@@mackenzie1512 yes, we've been taking Chimay on short drives to get him used to the car for future road trips, he even has a leash as well😊
@@ouritaliandestiny7955 Just a quick update on our situation; the whole thing in Galicia fell trough. We got so upset that we called an agent in Italy and she found us an apartment in Umbria in a little hilltop town and we are moving there next week. This will be our basecamp for the near future while we travel Italy. I guess Spain was just not meant too be but Italy was always in the cards!

Curious to know how they price houses in Italy…How do you if it’s a fair price?In America you can easily go online and search the comps in the neighborhood etc..
It's certainly more challenging to assess the value/price of less common homes, but can still be done through the comparison to similar properties.
One thing to keep in mind is that in the current market conditions (at least in more rural settings) most homes can be listed for 4-5 years before they sell so you can be aggressive with your offer.

We are thinking of doing the same things. But we can’t decide wether to buy in the countryside or in the city. We are looking in the south near Salento where the weather is more mild.

Hello! We love Umbria and its weather, although today we woke to snow, which we haven't had since November 2021!!
We only stayed in one place in Umbria when we arrived in August 2021. It was with a lady who rented out one of her apartments in a cute little town called Gioiella, not far from Castiglione del Lago. Is there anywhere else in Europe where people take their kitchen with them? I wonder how this became a thing. Seems like a PITA for both buyer and seller. But you did get that perfect arched window stove, so there's that!

We probably would have redone it anyway, so we're happy we had a clean slate.
Olive will be ready in November! The trees are in full bloom so we should have a good crop!

Thanks for sharing your experiences with us. I just didn't get, there is no kitchen but you saw a kitchen when you visited this house, isn't it? The seller moved the whole kitchen out?
Yep, they take it all, even the kitchen sink!
The house had been empty for almost 3 years, that's when they took the kitchen. So, no we never saw the kitchen when we looked at the house. It's very common in Italy that when the sellers move they take the kitchen..... and light fixtures! This is common even if you rent!

Finding a reasonable priced house is relatively easy, it's finding one that doesn't need a lot of work that's harder. We were very lucky in that we found both! @@miabeia3117 if you haven't been to Umbria, it's a must see! It's a great central location. As an example where we are in Umbria we are it 2 hours from Rome, 2 hours from Florence and 2 hours from either coast line! Oh, and about 10 miles from the Tuscan border! Umbria is the green heart of Italy and is the only land locked region.

What about the residency, how does that work for foreigners?
There are many options, depends on your passport situation, financial means etc. Very difficult to make blanket statements but it's relatively doable for most people.

If you have sufficient recurring income stream it's relatively easy to obtain a non-working retirement visa for italy. I'd enquire with your local consulate or embassy about the process and requirements.
