Madurai Mani Iyer was a unique legendary Carnatic Musician in the 20th century, time to reckon with. He was indeed a revolutionary musician who had the art of delivering a perfect blend of contemporary musical tradition with modernity. He is best known for his elaborate sangathis with depth and weight. Superfast swaram and manodharman yet landing in perfect sruthi and layam. Expansive swara prastharam, especially the usage of gamagam, used to be his specialty. He dedicated his entire life to classical Carnatic music, and his contributions to upholding orthodox sasthriya sangeetham will always be remembered. He is an icon. An inspiration and indeed a roll model to today's musicians. But the agony was that he was not given the due recognition and award and reward what he actually deserved during his lifetime. Yet he will continue to stay in our mind. His unmatched quality and unparalleled perfection combined with scintillating presentation skills would always cherish in our minds until we perish. In shott, I would say with aplomb that he was a yuga purusha and Indeed a Manifestation of Goddess Saraswathy. It will not be an exaggeration to say Mafurai got glorified through Madirai Mani Iyer. ❤
For many years now, a group gets together in a school classroom every month to listen to recordings of Shri MMI. There is an expert pointing some intricacy and sometimes a famous person comes to give a small talk at the start. But, mainly it's just people who come together for the joy that he offers. Who else can claim such devotion?
You are not only a good musician but also a good actor. I saw Madurai Mani Iyer in your singing. Enjoyed throughly. Thank you so much for making an episode on the great musician. 🙏🙏
Yesterday I was listening to sarasasaamadana and I was mesmerized by his Kalpana swarams which were patterns of 2's , 4's and even numbers. I was delighted to listen to it 😀 He was an extremely unique and a divine artist!
Truly amazing speech…very sincere appreciation of the Great Carnatic music Master Sri MMI… Very interesting, mesmerising and informative speech. Thank you Mr Shiva!!🙏🏽
Sir, wonderful to see your admiration for the master and pointing out why he captivated audiences like no one else. For uneducated rasikas like me, only the final result matters, and there no one comes close to iyerval. The Kumar Gandharva titbit i hadn't heard before. But it makes sense: genius will recognise genius. Thanks for this exposition. I come to this after the bliss of MMI's ka va va.
Today, Sri Vijay Siva took me to those colleges days of mine when I used rush to attend and enjoy his singing. . Blessed to think about that Great Nadopasakar.Sri Vijay .Siva did a great service to the upcoming artists by explaining the greatness and uniqueness of Sri MMI.
Namasté Sir My dear father , a busy general practitioner in a small town, was an ardent admirer of Sri Madurai Mani Iyer. Till today i believed that he was one of a kind, unique and inimitable. Hats off to you for being able to imitate him do well. We loved the flow of the rAga and the niraval. The kalpanA swarams used to be terrific and impressive. There was no calculated patterns in swarams to show their ending. The swarams kept flowing like the kaaveri of the past and merged with the song giving us a pleasant surprise. He was always flooded with slips of songs the audience wanted to listen. He obliged them and had to sing the same songs over again and again. 🙏
An awesome and heartfelt presentation about the extraordinary Madurai Sri Mani Iyer (MMI). His style was unique. He was a true Nadayogi. I feel inspired to share a story that my guru Srivanchiyam Ramachandra Iyer once narrated to me. MMI was about to start one of his marathon temple concerts somewhere in Thanjavur. Mudikondan Venkatrama Iyer had just finished his concert and MMI spontaneously touched Mudikondan's feet before climbing to the stage. He asked for forgiveness for any mistake that he might make! To which Mudikondan promptly replied saying "Mani, nee ovvoru swathiliayum samadhi ataiyare da, unakku eppadi thappu varum" (you attain Samadhi in every swaram, how can you ever make a mistake". When Sri Vijay says towards the end, that one can never ever spot an apaswaram in MMI's concert, it is 100% true and I was reminded of this touching story. MMI's music continues to enthrall his fans. One cannot mimic his style but listeners will be elevated to ethereal heights of bliss and budding musicians can draw inspiration from it.
Ganakaladhara Mahavidwan Madurai Mani Iyervaal is one of my inspiration's from the past year's. In Neraval, Mani Iyer's Neraval of Kalinil Cilambu, Tambura Cekkoni, Hitavu Mata Lento are unforgettable Neraval. And Sarvalaghu Swarams are hallmark of Mani Iyervaal's music. Mani Iyervaal was one of the few musicians who would acknowledge if his accompanists perform a notch better than Iyervaal. In fact in a recording of Sukhi Evvaro of Mani Iyervaal, Iyervaal sang the final turn of Swarams and gave the turn to Kumbakonam Rajamanickam Pillai on the Violin and Pillaivaal started the turn and embellished Iyervaal's Sarvalaghu Swarams with Sarvalaghu Swarams of his school of violin and in the end of the turn performed several notches higher than Mani Iyervaal and got a huge applause from the Rasika's where Iyervaal replied to Pillaivaal "Ipdi Suru Surunu Varele Anna". This comment is in the recording. Such was Iyervaal's encouragement towards his accompanists in concert's. I have myself heard recordings of concerts of Iyervaal with Lalgudi Sir, Tn Krishnan Sir and they at times raised the level of the concert through their turn's in Alapana's, Neraval or Kalpanaswarams. Mani Iyervaal used to appreciate and sing along with them in their turn if Iyervaal was impressed by their playing.
Thanks Sri Vijay Siva. For many of us who had the good fortune to attends to MMI concerts and heard him in person , your analysis brought nostalgic memories. I have actually seen many people in the audience with tearful eyes when MMI was singing Sukhi Evarro in Ramavami concerts.
I was literally in tears in hearing about the singing style of Shri.Madurai Mani Iyer. In fact I was also wondering why he was singing like this as quoted in the video. Great musicians have the due respect which they deserve. R VISWANATH, Rajakilpakkam Chennai 73
What an observation! Pppaaahhh.. Namaskarams to Madurai Mani Iyer and Vijay Shiva Ji. The joy with which you express while talking about Madurai Mani Iyer.. Ppaah... Purity! This video purges our souls.. Can't thank you enough Vijay Shiva Ji! In tears of joy!

Great episode. Loved to hear his inimitable style through you. We can sense the joy with which you speak about his greatness. Shri Mani Iyer's Sukhi Evaru in Kaanada is a delight. So much to share and enjoy about his music. Thanks for this lovely reminiscence.
Great narration Sir It is always great pleasure to listen someone like you , yourself being a great Vidwan, speaking about the Mahavidwan Sangeetha Kalanidhi Madhurai Mani Iyer. Grateful to you Sir🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
This is really a very befitting tribute to the Great Musical Legend Shri Madurai Mani Iyer by the great Musical Stalwart Shri Vijay Shiva. Shruthiya kavvindu paadanum, is the highlight🙏🙏👍👍👌👌
It is true. Also a sign of Tambram is to compare music with cricket. I wonder how many of our cricketers are this well informed about famous musicians!,,,!,,,,
On my maternal side everyone was a MMI fan. I imbibed the same from them as a kid not knowing what it was, but the Keerthana was melodious to hear. As I grew up, I felt was unfortunate not to see him sing live and still regret. There never can be a vidwaan as MMI. The way you explain the intricacies and nuances, hats off to you. You brought back MMI back to life. Dhanyosmi.
Sri Vijayasiva, thank you for explaining to music lay people like me nuances of Sri Madurai Mani Iyer's music. Everyone in my family has heard Sri Iyer countless number of times, especially his Kapi Narayani and it never gets old. Every time I hear it, I close my eyes and tears roll down. Thank you for explaining Sri Iyer's use of vowels in his alapana, short notes and nereval. I always loved Sri. Iyer's concerts, the few that is available on the web, now I have new respect for him.
Exactly. Kumar Gandharva, who we learn was an MMI fan, also employed 'ooo' and other sounds. Like Vijay ji says, whatever is required to reach the bhava is what must be employed.
I ama laywoman as far as music is concerned. But your interview in Kalki some decades ago is still in my memory. But this episode has made me enjoy music to the maximum. Respects to you.Sir.
Sir indeed a wonderful presentation by you. The great and only one Madurai Mani Iyer was my guru’s( late shri S Rajam) guru. Have heard from Rajam Sir that the legend maintained the hugest standards in music since the time he started singing( when he was a boy) till end. Indeed one of the greatest musicians we had. I was thrilled listening to your talk. Was very indepth analytical and lessons to learn. Simply superb. Tears was flowing my eyes being a devoted listener of MM Iyer. I had the good fortune of listening to him live at Sucheendrum temple மார்கழி festival where he was a permanent artist on 7th day mostly. Used enthrall the crowd as you rightly observed includes everyone from a novice to connoisseur. Thanks for the idea and effort. God bless.
Excellent study and analysis of the Legendary Carnatic music singer Madurai Mani Iyer.I am a big fan of that legendary singer.I too enjoy the concerts of Vijay Siva, who according to me should be the forefront to receive The Sangeetha Kalanidhi award soon.I feel that some less deserving have overtaken him.I pray that the coveted award is given to him soon. His analysis of the singing of Madurai Mani Iyer is superb and brilliant.
Excellent analysis equalĺy informative for future generation explaining the uniqueness of the singer in handling both nadam andrhythm.thanku very much sir !,🙏
Thanks Vidwan Sri Vijay Siva. MMI is a treasure to cherish !!! He was / is outstanding. So many brilliant renditions and evergreen. No one can try to come anywhere near his range and brilliance to appeal to a vast section of the audience. I am told by elders who have listened to him in person that the pakkavadhiyam gentlemen were also his audience. 🙏🙏🙏🙏
I have heard that he was suffering from some severe body ailments. But once he sits down for katcheri he would go on for hours unmindful of the pain. He completely got immersed in music. Next to god
After watching this Vande……., my curiosity to listen to Madurai Mani Aiyer once again was aroused.( I had the good fortune to listen to him three/four times in person). I got Rama Née Samaana.. in Karaharapriya in the UA-cam. It was totally a new experience, thanks to the input from VijayShiva. Every ibit was enjoyable manyfold. Thanks for this new insight as to how to understand MMI. Good education.
I am a perfect listener of MMI rendition without which my day is not complete. You have polished his music with good narration with your skillful knowledge of Carnatic music. Though I have a little knowledge his rendition penetrates my mind with enormous spiritual mind. MMI rendition lives forever with rasikas. God blessed such a wonderful person whose rendition needs a big research which you brought out to the Public very nicely. Tq Sir
Sir, I watch all the episodes of Vande Sangeetham. This episode on Sri Madurai Mani Iyer is the best of the lot ! Amazing. I enjoyed every minute of this episode. Thanks a lot for this wonderful series.
What a musician! And what an episode from you! I was fortunate to see and personally listen to his concerts, just a few of them. It was a blessing to me. In fact, he made me a Carnatic music fan. The "tuttuttoo and lalallaaa" he uses in alapana and while the violinist plays for his swaras just showed how much he was one with music. A great soul whom God took away so soon. Thanks a million to you for this episode. 🙏🙏
Excellent analysis of MMI music . Rythem and Nadham all roles into one is the Great MMI. Rightly called மதுர மணி by Ariyakudi Ramanuja Iyengar. VijaySiva has analysed every facet of MMI 's singing. Great tribute to MMI.
Namaskaram Vijay Siva sir, very fortunate to listen this video. Thank you very much. BTW, @12.56m, you have given wonderful explanation, why shri. MMI has not used swarams. Wow, really touching sir. Infact, I also sometimes use to think, why he is using vowels. Now I got the perfect answer and once again thanks. According to me, shri. MMI is really more than anything and beyond words, however, you have very nicely captured his style. My best wishes to you and looking forward to hearing more from you. Namaskaram sir.
Fantastic presentation..only Vijay Shiva can combine the old world charm in such a modern manner..excellent analysis...pl..present other musicians styles too
Excellent, short, sweet and fairly comprehensive treatise on the specific aspects of the genius. I have really enjoyed watching this video. Hats off to Mr. Vijay Siva for elaborating the musical qualities of Mani Iyer of Madurai.
Sir, I was the one who requested you to analyse Sri MMI’s bani and style etc. First I was a listener then I became his admirer, later I started as his rasika to become his fan and when turned 40 I became a fanatic, I know it very difficult to catch him in a capsule and sir, I thank you for your knowledgeable review of his bani,
Shri Vijay Sivan Sir- with this series you have created innumerable admirers for you and Carnatic music: you have motivated many of us to no end, how can we show our gratitude but by loving the amazing Carnatic music
Excellent presentation on MMI! It brings the qualities and characteristics of the great singer right in front of your mind. We can see how much respect Shri Siva has for the doyen.Keep up the good work please.
A brilliant thanks to you Sir, (if I may be permitted to say this) for covering the beauty of Maha Vidwan Shri Madurai Mani Iyer's Music in this short time of 18 minutes. As Prof Arvind Hebbar said in one of his lecture, Madurai Mani Iyer's Music was three in one Concert and which you explained and elaborated so well. My late Father used to tell me that singing rare ragas , rare Krithis is all fine in a Concert but nothing like hearing time tested Ragas and Time tested Compositions and which would add Grandeur and success for a Concert. Thanks once again.
Sri MMI is one of my all time favourites. Introduced to his music by my father (who rarely took musicians' names casually), it was a sort of love at first hearing. That he was a wizard was beyond debate who appealed to the masses and the classes equally. Delighted to see him being featured in this very interesting series. Thank you!!!
What a beautiful episode on Madurai Sri Mani Iyer ! Fascinating to listen to the nuances of His music ! Makes us want to go back to the source and listen to all the songs mentioned here ! Thank you for these treats 🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾
Excellent presentation shri vijay siva ji .really appreciate it. You may also add small clippings of such great masters performance recordings when u speak about them. Thanks
I have followed this series with close interest. Every episode educates me and provides a new perspective to the person or the music not to mention the many connotations behind ‘music’ which you have explored in detail. This one was a revelation. Except for his Kamboji and Note I didn’t have the patience to listen to this great vidwan, who was my family’s favourite. I would now given the new insights I have learned in this episode.
MMI has sung a verse of Kolaru pathigam also a treasure. We are great fans of the Greatest and what an episode Shri Vijay Shiva .Looking forward to many more. .

Next to god
Excellent episode. Great to hear about the intricacies of singing by a great vidwan from another great singer.
Thanks for a wonderful treat to the ears. Such a soulful one. God's blessings be with you always
Your Analysis of Sri Madurai Mani Iyer's ways of Singing is excellent, informative and engrossing! Congratulations.
After watching this Vande……., my curiosity to listen to Madurai Mani Aiyer once again was aroused.( I had the good fortune to listen
to him three/four times in person). I got Rama Née Samaana.. in Karaharapriya in the UA-cam. It was totally a new experience, thanks to
the input from VijayShiva.
Tq Sir
Wonderful. Blessed are those who are able to give such joy. And indeed those who enjoy too!

What shall I say? I was just speechless throughout your video. It was also like listening to MMI's songs...Thank you so much..
what a piece on MMI !! only Vijay Siva sir could have done this with such depth and appreciation...
Excellent analysis of MMI music . Rythem and Nadham all roles into one is the Great MMI. Rightly called மதுர மணி by Ariyakudi Ramanuja Iyengar. VijaySiva has analysed every facet of MMI 's singing. Great tribute to MMI.
Superb anna. Madurai Mani iyers raga alapanai itself will have perfect thaala bhavam.
Superb excellent by sooriupendra Mridangam artist Chennai founder mahaperiyava school of Mridangam 🙏🙏🙏

Great ! That to explained by shri. Shiva. Oh great. !
Excellent video. Students of music will find such information extremely useful. Thank you anna.
Great musician🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
Very wonderful and useful episode of Vande Sangeetham. Thank you so much sir . God is great 🙏; music is amazing👍.
Beautiful touching episode may god keep you blessed 🙏

So would i
