i'd suggest playing salmon run, too. it has made me insanely aware of my health at all times, i've gotten REALLY good at throwing bombs, and you're forced to learn every weapon in the game which helps you fight them later. Plus, you earn lots of cash and ability chunks!
Yess I agree :D also knowing where your teammates are and what they’re doing, knowing when to pick battles etc. Def a different skill set/mindset but there are skills you can carry over
@@avocadoast yes!! i used to just ignore my teammates and now i actively try to help them when i see them in bad situations. Salmon run will help make you a better person :^)
So much this! +1 for bomb throwing practice. The first time I nailed a bomb into the mouth of a Maws attacking a teammate halfway across the map, I knew I finally arrived. Salmon Run teaches a lot of great technical skills. Plus Salmon Run provides a lot of...opportunity...to learn how not to tilt. :P
I cannot stress trying out all the weapons enough. I’ve recently made it my goal to get one star for every weapon in the game. Though it’s slow going it has helped me improve A LOT and I’ve gotten really good at weapons I originally never wanted to play
I second this! Even if you HATE the weapon, it can really teach you great ways to counter weapons that you may never have known before. I used to get super overwhelmed whenever I was up against splatlings, until I started regularly play one and saw how people countered me.
my goal eventually when all the weapons are added is to get a 20 bomb with each and every one of them. I did this in 2 except made it ten since I was doing it in turf war but now that theres a casual ranked mode and its 5 mins instead of 3 I think I can do it
I agree with this, trying out weapons is good for learning how to counter others, BUT it is important to eventually narrow your weapon pool to a couple weapons in order to improve faster and understand more nuances of the weapon.
I've started doing this too. I have been playing weapons lately I have avoided because I thought I'd be terrible at them. It has helped me become much stronger in ranked.
I've gotten up to S+ Rank for the first time in 3 since I never gotten up to S+ Rank in the last 2 games and it was a gratifying moment in my time with the Splatoon games! I will take notes of this guide for X rank battles just to get better. Thanks Dude!
Congrats! I’m still on A+ trying to get myself to S rank, I have no problems getting 4-5 wins in a row to reach promotion S rank but then I just lose all 3 there games there
X rank is very different in difficulties compared to other mode. If you are not a front liner or you are not used to carry your team. Then surely your team will mostly defeated. S+0 can access X battle is just a big joke. It hurts a lot for old X ranked players from splatoon 2.
Something not mentioned about the HUD: it shows you which players have a special charged. Being able to see when your opponents and teammates have specials ready can make a huge difference. The amount of specials at the players’ disposal can make or break a push on the objective, and this can even help in solo queue to help know when your team is ready for a push. Something else I don’t see many people mentioning is audio cues. Many special weapons play unique sounds upon activation, which can let you know to take cover, even if the user is out of sight. There cues can also save you from some sub weapons. You’d be surprised at the number of times you could be splatted to a Suction Bomb you couldn’t see, whether it’s behind you or under a ledge. Keeping an ear out for certain sounds and learning what they mean can make a huge difference.
when the trizooka’s clicking sound goes off it’s scaryyy also does anyone know if the bubble/gurgling sound that happens when enemies swim is still in this game? or know anything similar player cues?

Been playing splatoon for a while and only now getting the confidence to jump into ranked/anarchy since I've finally gotten over (I hope) my fear of "being bad at video games"- thanks for the tips! Some of the more combat specific ones are ones I wouldn't have thought of.
To be fair with you, forget the whole ''ranked'' mentality. I remember from my days on League of Legends where I'd be afraid to play ranked and always got super stressed when I did get into ranked matchmaking. Until at one point I saw a video about a guy mentioning what Im about to tell you too: ONLY PLAY RANKED! Seriously, forget about normal matches and only play ranked and treat them like your normal matches. Everyone's going to try harder in ranked matches so you'll have to be more aware of your surroundings and try harder, when you only play ranked and treat them like your only game mode you'll naturally become better at the game. Forget all about going down in rank because you will get better at some point, much more compared to playing normals.
Lowkey wish there was a guide or tips/advice for stick users. I physically can’t do motion controls due to bad wrists. I know I’ll always be playing at a disadvantage, and motion will always be superior. But there’s gotta be something to help stick players like me, even if it’s just a little.
One main disadvantage is that you will struggle to jump and aim at the same time, since people usually use the right thumb for the jump button and the right stick. Try remapping the jump button to something like L1, though it might be really uncomfortable and weird for a long while. Might help. Some weapons are pretty good with sticks only: brushes, rollers, buckets, explosher, blasters, brellas. They may not be ideal for many map/mode combos, but you can reach low X with just rollers and brushes using sticks only.
Try sticking to slosher theres alot of cool stuff that a slosher using sticks can do just type on yt slosher sticks tips splatoon 3 and im pretty sure you will find some good vids
Ok so if your being flanked there’s a good way to turn fast- while shooting move your left joystick in the direction you need to turn and press Y- I use motion controls and still use this a lot
I always say, “Check your sides, back, and head.” It takes longer for me to turn and shoot when I’m already getting jumped and they’re pretty much blind spots. Some player may try to get you as they fall next or on top of you, or just shoot from their higher ground. One of the things I tend to do that I don’t entirely recommend is jumping forward as your shooting. It’s kind of a vulnerable move, but it does give that extra shove forward, but it can leave you exposed in the air. Salmon run is a brilliant way to get to know the weapon without having to own it in your inventory, especially weapons you aren’t familiar with or usually refuse to use in other modes. I have a soft spot for Nozzlenose in Salmon run
Thank you so much! I've been playing since Splatoon 2, but I joined competitive recently and I've been wondering what to look out for to improve my gameplay! I hadn't really realized some of the things you touched on here! Can't wait for part 2 :D
Big tip for using Splattaling: charge behind walls and objects. You might think this is cheap, but it is the best way for you to use this weapon class to get enough splats in the game, because charging out in the open leaves you vulnerable since each splattaling has different charge speeds. Even with ones with fast charging, you should still hide behind stuff to charge and shoot unsuspecting players. One suggestion for gear, is to use at least one with Main saver, that will help you reduce ink consumption for charging, and paired with ink recovery up will help with that as well.
Try different weapons in turf, pick a weapon with a good kit, or play salmon run. find a weapon with a good sub like the splat bomb or the suction bomb.
A potential video series suggestion. -Go around to each map. -Cover 1 map per video. -Discuss really good locations to place/use each specials in each map. Of course, I know that its situational, and some weapons dont entirely matter where you use them at, and not every map is the same in each mode. but it could still be really helpful on a general basis. for instance you could point out key spots to place wave breaker on hagglefish to get more use out of it without enemies destroying it immediately. or spots around museum that offer better vantage points, or are harder to hit when using crab. or when would be a better time to use bubbler on undertow tc
Climbed from A- to S just today playing Hydra; I've pretty much been ignoring ranked in favor of salmon run for the past few months, but finally made the effort. The most important thing that I kept repeating in my head was to watch my flanks--and I think that's number 1 for any backline. Simply being aware of where people will try to flank from (and noting in the beginning which types of weapons are most likely to try) made all the difference in my survivability, and after a while it becomes extremely predictable!
Also remember your outfit and their “specials” (boosters! ex: ink recovery, speed swim, etc.) this because one of my friends started to only use outfits that fit her well, but she didn’t had good boosters, so she started to get bad at it :) And as the comment of salmon run, yes, play it, it can help you to get better and play story mode, DLCs and test your weapons in test areas!! :D

DUDE: So you've been playing the game for about a month now and you've been struggling and finding it hard to keep up with everyone in ranked Me: Ok that's not me I'm an A- DUDE: You're about A- Me: . . .
I prefer stick controls (even though motion is objectively better) because I have chronic pain and need to change position a lot while playing in handheld mode. It’s really annoying when I can’t move without the camera flying all over the place. I’d still use motion for TV mode if I had a proper pro controller, though.
I think understand how your Main Weapon/Weapons Should play (Strengths and Weaknesses of it) is a thing that you should also know as a starter. So you didn't start to train ineffective ways of play a weapon. To relearn those in the Right way is way harder than learn it right directly.
Nah stick controls are subjectively better than motion controls, whenever I look around I’m not trying to move my controller in that direction the entire time
I really wanna get better and so I've switched to motion controls but I feel really nauseous? I've been playing since 2020 and I've never used motion so I really suck right now but I hope I'll be able to get a bit better soon

I think something that could be incredibly helpful is if there was a sound effect that plays when an ally or enemy gets splatted, like in Overwatch 2.
I love getting to S+ rank without learning a single thing about competitive splatoon
Whenever the Squid/Octo is black, it’s disconnected, whenever it’s rainbow-like, it’s special is fully charged.
Thank you so much man
Helpful, as always. Thanks
I am trash at Splatoon, and want to not be trash at Splatoon. This vid is an awesome starting point for my journey to stay out of the garbage can! Thank you for making this and giving me hope!
"so youve been playing about a month" "you're in A rank"
me watching this at B- after playing since 2016
very helpful video, my friend lil manda 3 got way better she went from 1 kill to 2 KILLS!!! AMAZING IMPROVEMENT
DUDE: So you've been playing the game for about a month now and you've been struggling and finding it hard to keep up with everyone in ranked
Me: Ok that's not me I'm an A-
DUDE: You're about A-
Me: . . .
when i was a beginner in splatoon i painted every thing in my turf small bit near the wall paint lol
Instructions unclear. Spontaneous combustion resulted.
Hey buddy...you are a great Guy...thanks for your content. This guide was amazing !!!
Glad it helped!
i’m gonna try to “get gud” thanks!
The background music at the start is from the ganon fight in botw
The biggest problem for me is aiming. I can’t aim for shit, if I could just use a mouse instead that would be awesome.
Crab
I prefer stick controls (even though motion is objectively better) because I have chronic pain and need to change position a lot while playing in handheld mode. It’s really annoying when I can’t move without the camera flying all over the place.
I’d still use motion for TV mode if I had a proper pro controller, though.
Subscribed 👍🏻👍🏻
Left, right, left, right, up, up, down down, A, B, START!
Oh wait...
I think understand how your Main Weapon/Weapons Should play (Strengths and Weaknesses of it) is a thing that you should also know as a starter. So you didn't start to train ineffective ways of play a weapon. To relearn those in the Right way is way harder than learn it right directly.
I would love an updated sub strafing guide 😅 never really got the hang of that and wondering how it works with the new movement options
Can use playstation controller with a 20buck adapter. Want to say a small pc monitor is best 4 shooters as well 😁
4:12 Groupon Vs Kyorge in splatoon
Nah stick controls are subjectively better than motion controls, whenever I look around I’m not trying to move my controller in that direction the entire time
Dude is the only reason I'm not absolute trash at this game. Still not great, but not super hot garbage either. So thanks for that!
Any time!
I really wanna get better and so I've switched to motion controls but I feel really nauseous? I've been playing since 2020 and I've never used motion so I really suck right now but I hope I'll be able to get a bit better soon
Try them on low. Mine are +3 +4
Lately i've been playing bucket a lot and I have found myself really low on ink when fighting someone
I used to use motion controls in splatoon 2 but I have the 3rd game on my switch light so I can't play with motion controls
Ive been drowning in S+0, they should def let you derank. i was confortable, getting better in S rank. but the jump to S+0 is out of my league
