It’s weird that when Tails wasn’t a genius in Adventures you excused it as being because that aspect of his character hadn’t been introduced yet, but when the same thing was the case in SatAM it was a negative. In fact, SatAM even had Tails doing more techy stuff by the end.
Actually, AoStH Tails had more technical development in the middle of the series, from "Tails in Charge" to "Tails Prevails". So AoStH Tails is technically the better version, because he isn’t braindead or rams himself to trees on purpose like his SatAM counterpart.
I think the problem with SatAm Tails is that he was starting to develop at the end, but we sadly didn’t get to see where that was going. That is one thing I’d hold against the show: not developing Tails as a character and featuring more of him earlier in the show.

Sonic Satam is what gave Archie the idea to make comics of them, but ever since Satam didn't get season 3 because of Power Rangers and Ken Pender's doings, Sonic Satam never got that season 3
For me, SatAM is the perfect tone for Sonic; dark but still good kid-friendly fun when it needs to be to make things not feel edgy like Shadow the Hedgehog or 06 lol. For me, Sonic being just pure comedy takes away the dark atmosphere from the final levels in the classic era and the dramatic adventure from the early 3D games. SatAM gets that balance, as well as portraying Sonic himself correctly, Adventures also just feels like a lazy Bugs Bunny clone lol.
Agreed, which doesn't make itself inherently bad, but we already had reruns of Bugs Bunny on Cartoon Network back then. Sonic SatAm had more faith in it's audience to appreciate the subtly of what was happening and very much mirrored the Archie Sonic Comics of the time quite beautifully.
That’s not to say Sonic having a comedic tone while being serious is a bad idea in of itself. Sonic Adventure 1 and 2 definitely has this nice blend of AoStH and SatAM in terms of world building and character growth… which I can’t say the same for the games after Adventure 2.
SatAM's Robotnic is always going to be the bar by which I compare Robotnic by. And I've never seen a better one. The stakes felt real and you never knew when the piper would come calling. I'll almost always chose well crafted drama over a similar goofy show. But as you said, that is my preference.
I loved SatAM's Robotnic when i were a teen, but now i prefer Adventures Robotnik. As i grown older, Drama plots became predictable to me, and well-crafted drama is heavily predictable. Because i see "Oh, now they're going to add the suspense... such a cliche" "Oh, now i don't know how the fight will end because of suspense... what a cliche... well, i predict that one of heroes would survive or not. Oh, he survived, it was one of my two predictions, what a cliche." I don't feel immersed with that. But Being the goofball... that's the purpose of Eggman/Robotnik. Besides... the very best villain would combine being a goofball and actual creepy villain. Because i would be scared if the ruler of tyrannical empire acts like a clown. That's called Psychological Attack. Make your opponents to think that you're a fool so they would be fooled by that. Real genius knows how to ACT like a fool, while hiding genius. As one guy said "I would be pretty scared to see a warrior who's so confident, that he wears pink armor" Same thing with Goofy Genius.

AoStH's Robotnik is so much more memorable IMO. His mannerisms, his exaggerated movements and form, Long John Baldry's voice acting: you could tell the man was having a lot of fun in that recording studio. He was silly, but he stuck with me. SatAM's Robotnik? Jim Cummings is an excellent voice actor, but Robotnik himself is...forgettable. He's the generic angry villain. The standard "I'll kill all of you!" kind of villain who has no other motivation than being a cruel tyrant for no reason.

As a SatAM fan I was pained by the wins that Adventures got. But, if I’m being objective, I can’t disagree either. Especially as compared to the actual game. That being said I think, you just made me realize WHY I liked SatAM so much. It was nothing like the game but it was also nothing like all the shows at the time. Ren and Stimpy, Earthworm Jim, The New Adventures of the Pink Panther… the list goes on. They were all series that comprised of unrelated shorts with near nonexistent connective tissue. Meanwhile SatAM not only had seasons long plot lines, but it was far more high stakes and darker than just about anything out there. It was the doorway to the heavier stuff. So yeah now that you mention it Adventures was the more definitive video game cartoon, but I think SatAM was more ‘groundbreaking’

It was much closer in tone to the games as well, with Sonic and Tails taking on the show stealer that is Long John Baldrys Robotnik. SatAM was far too dark for its own good, and has little to nothing to do with the mega drive games. Plus Tails was shoved aside, but in adventures he’s always there and even gets some episodes to save the day. Sure SATAM was ok, but I wasn’t a sonic fan for dark stories and drama, I watched it because I wanted to see Sonic fight Robotnik like in the mega drive games. It’s like if they made a Mario show where he was a ptsd scarred Vietnam vet and Bowser was a drug baron addicted to heroin. It doesn’t fit what made me like the characters,

SonicSatAM was more in line with the games and remember that Sonic CD and Was already a thing and Sonic 3 was about to drop when these shows started plus even Knat made an appearance. I also notice and how he faulted Sonic SatAM for not having Tails not being the tech of the crew but not AoStHH. Sonic SatAM had tails more of techy in the second half of the show. No. Sonic underground was lame cause the story never progressed, but I at least didn't feel bored while watching it. (Whatever the non satam show was called cough cough)
Near the end of the SatAM they had a story where tails is growing up and starting to help sonic with missions, it’s really cool to see him grow and become a part of the duo over time, it’s a shame they cancelled it right after tails started joining the missions

Old comment, but Ben Hurst stated before passing that he planned for Season 3 to be the rise of tails. Because in the early episodes Sally treated him like a 5 yr old "funny kiss", bedtime stories etc.
I never saw the darker toned cartoon until many years later, but I know I've seen the lighter toned one a good deal as a kid. In terms of storytelling and character development, Sonic SatAM gets the award. In terms of surrealist and absurdist humor, no contest, Adventures of Sonic The Hedgehog takes the cake.
Why there was two Sonic the Hedgehog shows in 1993: According to Robby London, DiC originally made a deal to produce only the darker, more story-driven Sonic cartoon for ABC to air on Saturday mornings. However, DiC also wanted to go further and produce additional episodes for weekday syndication as well, similar to what DiC has previously done with The Real Ghostbusters, but Mark Pedowitz, the then-senior vice president of business affairs and contracts at ABC, who expected the Sonic cartoon to air *exclusively* *on* *ABC,* rejected the idea, saying that if DiC puts the show in syndication, then it *won't* be on their network. ABC wouldn't agree to the deal until London came with a proposition that DiC would produce a separate, vastly different Sonic show for syndication instead, the end result of which became Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog.
The only way I could see them ranked against each other without it being based off of personal biases is by looking at if they met the thematic goals that they aimed to achieve, like being in the relationship between characters, the characters personality, their world around them, or the conflict. These are the things we should look at objectively when it comes to a competition between to shows like this
Honestly I prefer Adventures because it was my first Sonic cartoon so yeah it is nostalgia based but it is my choice. To be honest I am surprised the Sonic fanbase didn't complain about Tails being too brown in Adventures.
It's nice to see someone who doesn't write 'Adventures' off as the all-round inferior show, many Sonic fans write it off as objectively terrible and you'll rarely hear a 'Saturday' fan that sings that show's praises while acting like 'Adventures' shouldn't exist. From a quality and seriousness perspective, 'Saturday' is the clear winner, it is the more polished and better made show all around...But at the same time it feels more like a cartoon that wants to be Star Wars than a Sonic show. It feels like they really wanted it to be about the Freedom Fighters, but were obligated to have Sonic, Tails and Robotnik there for marketing purposes. The Sonic elements are heavily downplayed and they barely reference the games outside of Sonic, Robotnik, the Rings, and occasionally Tails when the writers remember he exists. Adventures makes liberal references to the games, we get the Chaos Emeralds (one even requires Rings to be reached, like the Sonic 2 Special Zones), Zones are name-dropped (Marble Zone, Casino Night Zone, Special Zone, etc), Robotnik actually has Badniks, Tails is a major character like in the games, the music is a closer fit to the games (Sonic's theme is a remix of the Intro Theme from the first 2 games), and Robotnik wants to remake Mobius in his image (like how Eggman wants to make Eggmanland, Robotnik turns an amusement park into Robotnikland). Saturday Robotnik seems to be content with ruling a desolate, barren wasteland populated entirely by Swatbots, Adventures Robotnik wants an intact Mobius where everyone fears, or ideally admires him. Also ironically it's the goofy, wacky Adventures show that delves more into Robotnik's character. Saturday Robotnik is a 1-dimensional villain with no real motivation other than desiring power for its own sake. We never find out WHY he wants to rule Mobius so badly or how polluting it and destroying its ecosystem is something he wants. Adventures Robotnik is doing it because of his own gigantic, but fragile ego. He had an abusive mother who raised him to be evil (and still abuses him even as an adult), he lost the girl he loved to his high school rival, and he had a strong desire to be admired and respected. Even Sonic realises why Robotnik turned out so rotten after meeting his mom, he's clearly someone who never knew love and even creates a surrogate family whom he also abuses and robot wives because he's lonely. I'm not saying he's some deep, nuanced, well-written character, but the writers put in more effort to flesh out his backstory, motivation and dynamic with the rest of the cast. Saturday Robotnik is just evil for its own sake. I also never really bought the relationship between Sonic and Sally, his reckless, risk-taking, non-serious personality is a constant annoyance for Sally and her uptight, serious, no-nonsense personality makes Sonic feel tied down. It's like they wanted to replicate the relationship between Han Solo and Princess Leia, but it just doesn't work with how incompatible Sonic and Sally are if they looked at their relationship realistically.
Screwed by the Network: Despite pulling in solid ratings against Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers and being connected with a mega-hit game series, Sonic SATAM got cancelled for two reasons: Disney had just bought ABC and decided to clean house concerning their Saturday lineup (which would lead to One Saturday Morning emerging a couple years later), and many of ABC's stations tended to delay the lineup or preempt it entirely to air local news or sports. As a result, some people didn't see the show until USA Network put it on as part of their Action Extreme Team block.
I wouldn't compare Adventures to Ren and Stimpy, that show made very little sense. Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog slapstick was more like Stephen Spilberg's Tiny Toons Adventures and Animaniacs.
To me, SatAM for story, but AoStH wins the character department. You have to remember, both those shows were using Sonic 1&2 for reference, including their Game Gear counterparts, so Knuckles doesn’t exist in either one… and even if Sonic CD and Sonic 3 was released during Season 2 of SATAM, they still didn’t take advantage of having more elements from the games in tasteful manner (Blast to the Past has a Floating Island and Time Stones, but neither element are related to each other in the actual games).
Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog is my favorite of the two, I found it more entertaining because it's hilarious and Grounder, Scratch and Coconuts are my favorite minions out of all the Sonic cartoons.

Comparing These two Sonic shows is literally the same as comparing Teen Titans and Teen Titans Go. One is obviously the more mature, more realistic approach to more serious themes, while still being able to show comedic effects. The other is the equivalent to the form of comedy you'll find in a Spongebob episode. Funny, extremely whimsical and cartoony, but lacking in substance and depth, and you won't get much of anything else but a cheap laugh from a worn out gag.

This was No Contest, even more so is that Adventures Ran 3 Years of Air Time while Saturday only went on for 1 Year, so Adventures Lasted 2 more Years than Saturday
Technically Asoth only ran in 1993. There was an X-mas special released in 1996 though which is why you get 93-96, but it literally was just 1 episode out of 66.

Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog was on Fox, but it was syndicated. Sonic the Hedgehog (a.k.a. Sega's Sonic the Hedgehog and SatAM), on the other hand, was a Saturday morning network opponent. It was also on syndicated on many UPN, Fox, The WB and independent stations later in the 90's.
I prefer The Adventures of Sonic The Hedgehog because the episodes have so much comedy and I remeber Robotnik's famoue catchphrase " I hate that Hedgehog" it cracked me up😀😅😂🤣.
Yes someone with TASTE. I always bring up the “Virgin SatAM vs Chad AOSTH” image. Glad there’s people out there who prefer to just turn off their brain and enjoy the screwball ride.
Both are great. But I can't help but enjoy the things that were given so much thought and care. SatAM was groundbreaking and 25 years of a comic was made after it. People want the Freedom Fighters back and I hope Sonic Prime mentions them at least with the whole multiverse concept
I have a theory: what if aosth happend before Satam and when robotnick finally took over mobius, sonic took things more serious and soon met the freedom fighters
Now do a version of this that also includes Sonic Underground. Earlier in my life, these three cartoons formed a good bit of what I knew of the series; I couldn't recognise Dr. Eggman when I saw him illustrated in an ad for the Dreamcast games! I did, however, learn more about the various branchs and even saw all three of these cartoons. Now I have a chance to read the entire original run of "Sonic the Comic" and a vast chunck of history of "Archie Comics SatAM".

I grew up watching Adventures on Toon Disney when they were doing re-runs, I also have vague memories of watching Underground. I was generally a late Sonic fan, I first met him at my cousins house, they both had a genesis and I first played Sonic 2, and watched them also play Sonic Adventure on Dreamcast. My first system was the N64, so I missed the whole SEGA vs Nintendo war. I watched Satam back in 2007, its definitely a great show, but I would honestly say I have more affection towards Adventures. Satam is by no means terrible, it got robbed of a 3rd season and it could have been better if more territory was explored. Power Rangers took Sonic's hype away, which is meaningless the more you think about it. Pokemon and DBZ came out quickly and DEMOLISHED Power Rangers. Makes me wonder how things would have played differently if Satam was never cancelled.
I like aosth slightly more. I just like how weird,funny, and surreal it is. And not to forget all the classic jokes and ytps it created. Satam is a bit overrated but it’s still a pretty good show.
Overrated is harsh. There was so much love put into the show. 25 year comic, the longest for a video game character came from it. People want Sally back and the freedom fighters today. I think underrated would be more accurate.

@@STikER326 yeah pretty much after felt that too. I don’t see how AoStHH music or tone was more inline with the games. SonicSatAM was more in line with the games and remember that Sonic CD and Was already a thing and Sonic 3 was about to drop when these shows started plus even Knat made an appearance. I also notice and how he faulted Sonic SatAM for not having Tails not being the tech of the crew but not AoStHH. Sonic SatAM had tails more of techy in the second half of the show. There were only a few episode that had Tails as a techy in AoStHH.
What we can all agree on is that both are infinitely better than the abysmally bad Sonic Underground

No. Sonic underground was lame cause the story never progressed, but I at least didn't feel bored while watching it. (Whatever the non satam show was called cough cough)
Near the end of the SatAM they had a story where tails is growing up and starting to help sonic with missions, it’s really cool to see him grow and become a part of the duo over time, it’s a shame they cancelled it right after tails started joining the missions
maltese 84 I often wonder that myself since it ended on cliffhanger! I heard that tails would have been on more missions and knuckles would have been introduced eventually. I thought the glowing eyes at the end were from knuckles but apparently the show runner says they were snively

@maltese 84 But it can't be Naugus', because he doesn't have conjoined eyes. Also, it's dumb to make Chaotic Neutral character into a Chaotic Evil character, especially when we just met that character in just one episode.
Old comment, but Ben Hurst stated before passing that he planned for Season 3 to be the rise of tails. Because in the early episodes Sally treated him like a 5 yr old "funny kiss", bedtime stories etc.
I never saw the darker toned cartoon until many years later, but I know I've seen the lighter toned one a good deal as a kid. In terms of storytelling and character development, Sonic SatAM gets the award. In terms of surrealist and absurdist humor, no contest, Adventures of Sonic The Hedgehog takes the cake.
Why there was two Sonic the Hedgehog shows in 1993:
According to Robby London, DiC originally made a deal to produce only the darker, more story-driven Sonic cartoon for ABC to air on Saturday mornings. However, DiC also wanted to go further and produce additional episodes for weekday syndication as well, similar to what DiC has previously done with The Real Ghostbusters, but Mark Pedowitz, the then-senior vice president of business affairs and contracts at ABC, who expected the Sonic cartoon to air *exclusively* *on* *ABC,* rejected the idea, saying that if DiC puts the show in syndication, then it *won't* be on their network. ABC wouldn't agree to the deal until London came with a proposition that DiC would produce a separate, vastly different Sonic show for syndication instead, the end result of which became Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog.
It's a shame that sonic satam never got its 3rd season.

I do adore AOSTH as much as I like Sonic, but SATAM wins this round for being the BEST Sonic show ever in my opinion as it first aired around AOSTH.
Ren and Stumpy? Where the hell do you get that from? Aosth is more inline with the old 1930s/Max Fletcher cartoons.

How is this even a question? Sonic SatAM was phenomenal.
The only way I could see them ranked against each other without it being based off of personal biases is by looking at if they met the thematic goals that they aimed to achieve, like being in the relationship between characters, the characters personality, their world around them, or the conflict. These are the things we should look at objectively when it comes to a competition between to shows like this
Honestly I prefer Adventures because it was my first Sonic cartoon so yeah it is nostalgia based but it is my choice. To be honest I am surprised the Sonic fanbase didn't complain about Tails being too brown in Adventures.
It's nice to see someone who doesn't write 'Adventures' off as the all-round inferior show, many Sonic fans write it off as objectively terrible and you'll rarely hear a 'Saturday' fan that sings that show's praises while acting like 'Adventures' shouldn't exist. From a quality and seriousness perspective, 'Saturday' is the clear winner, it is the more polished and better made show all around...But at the same time it feels more like a cartoon that wants to be Star Wars than a Sonic show. It feels like they really wanted it to be about the Freedom Fighters, but were obligated to have Sonic, Tails and Robotnik there for marketing purposes. The Sonic elements are heavily downplayed and they barely reference the games outside of Sonic, Robotnik, the Rings, and occasionally Tails when the writers remember he exists.
Adventures makes liberal references to the games, we get the Chaos Emeralds (one even requires Rings to be reached, like the Sonic 2 Special Zones), Zones are name-dropped (Marble Zone, Casino Night Zone, Special Zone, etc), Robotnik actually has Badniks, Tails is a major character like in the games, the music is a closer fit to the games (Sonic's theme is a remix of the Intro Theme from the first 2 games), and Robotnik wants to remake Mobius in his image (like how Eggman wants to make Eggmanland, Robotnik turns an amusement park into Robotnikland). Saturday Robotnik seems to be content with ruling a desolate, barren wasteland populated entirely by Swatbots, Adventures Robotnik wants an intact Mobius where everyone fears, or ideally admires him.
Also ironically it's the goofy, wacky Adventures show that delves more into Robotnik's character. Saturday Robotnik is a 1-dimensional villain with no real motivation other than desiring power for its own sake. We never find out WHY he wants to rule Mobius so badly or how polluting it and destroying its ecosystem is something he wants. Adventures Robotnik is doing it because of his own gigantic, but fragile ego. He had an abusive mother who raised him to be evil (and still abuses him even as an adult), he lost the girl he loved to his high school rival, and he had a strong desire to be admired and respected. Even Sonic realises why Robotnik turned out so rotten after meeting his mom, he's clearly someone who never knew love and even creates a surrogate family whom he also abuses and robot wives because he's lonely.
I'm not saying he's some deep, nuanced, well-written character, but the writers put in more effort to flesh out his backstory, motivation and dynamic with the rest of the cast. Saturday Robotnik is just evil for its own sake. I also never really bought the relationship between Sonic and Sally, his reckless, risk-taking, non-serious personality is a constant annoyance for Sally and her uptight, serious, no-nonsense personality makes Sonic feel tied down. It's like they wanted to replicate the relationship between Han Solo and Princess Leia, but it just doesn't work with how incompatible Sonic and Sally are if they looked at their relationship realistically.
For your information Snively is Robotnik's nephew, Nuff said.

Sonic Underground is underrated
Screwed by the Network: Despite pulling in solid ratings against Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers and being connected with a mega-hit game series, Sonic SATAM got cancelled for two reasons: Disney had just bought ABC and decided to clean house concerning their Saturday lineup (which would lead to One Saturday Morning emerging a couple years later), and many of ABC's stations tended to delay the lineup or preempt it entirely to air local news or sports. As a result, some people didn't see the show until USA Network put it on as part of their Action Extreme Team block.
I wouldn't compare Adventures to Ren and Stimpy, that show made very little sense.
Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog slapstick was more like Stephen Spilberg's Tiny Toons Adventures and Animaniacs.

SATAM by a long shot in the story and character department.
To me, SatAM for story, but AoStH wins the character department. You have to remember, both those shows were using Sonic 1&2 for reference, including their Game Gear counterparts, so Knuckles doesn’t exist in either one… and even if Sonic CD and Sonic 3 was released during Season 2 of SATAM, they still didn’t take advantage of having more elements from the games in tasteful manner (Blast to the Past has a Floating Island and Time Stones, but neither element are related to each other in the actual games).
Sally's father is a squirrel but her and her mother are chipmunks.
Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog is my favorite of the two, I found it more entertaining because it's hilarious and Grounder, Scratch and Coconuts are my favorite minions out of all the Sonic cartoons.

Comparing These two Sonic shows is literally the same as comparing Teen Titans and Teen Titans Go. One is obviously the more mature, more realistic approach to more serious themes, while still being able to show comedic effects.
The other is the equivalent to the form of comedy you'll find in a Spongebob episode. Funny, extremely whimsical and cartoony, but lacking in substance and depth, and you won't get much of anything else but a cheap laugh from a worn out gag.

This was No Contest, even more so is that Adventures Ran 3 Years of Air Time while Saturday only went on for 1 Year, so Adventures Lasted 2 more Years than Saturday

Technically Asoth only ran in 1993. There was an X-mas special released in 1996 though which is why you get 93-96, but it literally was just 1 episode out of 66.

Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog was on Fox, but it was syndicated. Sonic the Hedgehog (a.k.a. Sega's Sonic the Hedgehog and SatAM), on the other hand, was a Saturday morning network opponent. It was also on syndicated on many UPN, Fox, The WB and independent stations later in the 90's.
I love both but I think I like adventures a little more mostly because of how absolutely over the top and goofy it is

I always bring up the “Virgin SatAM vs Chad AOSTH” image. Glad there’s people out there who prefer to just turn off their brain and enjoy the screwball ride.
Both are great. But I can't help but enjoy the things that were given so much thought and care. SatAM was groundbreaking and 25 years of a comic was made after it. People want the Freedom Fighters back and I hope Sonic Prime mentions them at least with the whole multiverse concept

Now do a version of this that also includes Sonic Underground. Earlier in my life, these three cartoons formed a good bit of what I knew of the series; I couldn't recognise Dr. Eggman when I saw him illustrated in an ad for the Dreamcast games! I did, however, learn more about the various branchs and even saw all three of these cartoons. Now I have a chance to read the entire original run of "Sonic the Comic" and a vast chunck of history of "Archie Comics SatAM".

I grew up watching Adventures on Toon Disney when they were doing re-runs, I also have vague memories of watching Underground. I was generally a late Sonic fan, I first met him at my cousins house, they both had a genesis and I first played Sonic 2, and watched them also play Sonic Adventure on Dreamcast. My first system was the N64, so I missed the whole SEGA vs Nintendo war.
I watched Satam back in 2007, its definitely a great show, but I would honestly say I have more affection towards Adventures. Satam is by no means terrible, it got robbed of a 3rd season and it could have been better if more territory was explored. Power Rangers took Sonic's hype away, which is meaningless the more you think about it. Pokemon and DBZ came out quickly and DEMOLISHED Power Rangers. Makes me wonder how things would have played differently if Satam was never cancelled.
I like aosth slightly more. I just like how weird,funny, and surreal it is. And not to forget all the classic jokes and ytps it created. Satam is a bit overrated but it’s still a pretty good show.
Overrated is harsh. There was so much love put into the show. 25 year comic, the longest for a video game character came from it. People want Sally back and the freedom fighters today. I think underrated would be more accurate.
