Approval of God: Naoto Ohshima, the creator of Sonic the Hedgehog, has said in Twitter posts that he enjoys Sonic SatAM. The DiC staff gave him a poster of the show's characters, which he keeps framed in glass: "Sonic was born in the image of the United States. I love American Sonic. Thank you." - Naoto Ohshima
Too bad Yuji Naka had the opposite opinion, he disliked the american side of sonic and canceled two potential games proposed by the Sega Technical Institute (american branch of sega internal team) that were going to include SATAM characters, they did manage to give them cameos in sonic spinball but any other appearance was shut down.
@@rayvenkman2087That would be Japan's corporate culture. America runs by the philosophy of anything and everything-or at least it used to; Japan is my way or the highway.
@sonicmastersword8080 That would stand except there's plenty of companies that are just as willing to meet in the middle. Takara and Hasbro's partnership, the owners of Ultraman willing to take him out to the wider world and unfortunately; Capcom's puritan stance. Sega of Japan is a more stubborn Toei and like Toei, they're a pain in the ass to work with if you're from outside of Japan. Ask Shout Factory about it. The other companies managed to do fine in spite of their stubbornness. Sega of Japan played an equal part in Sega bowing out of the console market after the Dreamcast. A decision that’s either good for them longterm or bad for us console gamers given Microsoft's growing monopoly, Sony's Hollywoodficatian and Nintendo being Nintendo since you only have three options.
17:05 Not only did the comic run for 25 years, that series holds 3 different records for the longest licensed comic series, longest comic seriesbased on a video game, and the longest science fiction comic series. Comic book series rarely last that long, especially for one based on licensed characters like Sonic and Sally.
I only found out about the comics two months ago. Before the only piece of media that I looked into was Sonic Boom and Sonic X. I never played the games and probably still won't play them. But when I started skimming through the Archie comics I was immediately hooked due to the amount of world building and huge cast of characters.
@@aclstudios Because I'm not a gamer, the only systems I ever got was the 3DS and the ps4 and the only reason I got them was that I didn't want to look like the only boy in elementary school who didn't have a game system. In all honesty I like reading manga and building lego sets that playing video games, in fact I like watching let's plays than playing the games themselves.
I have a strong attatchment to a lot of these characters through growing up on the comics and it makes me a little sad that neither the show or the comics got their proper conclusions so there was never a proper send off for iconic characters like Sally and Bunnie
We almost had a proper conclusion to SatAM but suposedly Penders screwed that up by throwing the guy wanting to make season 3 under the bus to try to make his own sequel movie Sonic Armageddon (you can find the trailer on UA-cam) Hell It wouldn't even need a sequel if they just didn't add in that cliffhanger.
Im glad the comics made antoine go through an arc. He started out with his satam personality but eventually grew into the great warrior he always said he was. Plus his relationship with bunnie is great.
The worst thing against Antoine is that he is progressively getting worse! He was fine in the first season and actually got out a few chuckles out of me. He had some level of competence and his rivalry with Sonic was actually set on somewhat equal footing (like in the episode set in underground city) And then in season two he literally trips over his own legs like 5 different times, is scared of his own shadow and his bumbling incompetence is barely even noticed by his companions. Also he is forced into like every episode or even gets two episodes (with 2 stories each) that focus solely on showing how much of an idiot he is (even in episodes where it's not really his fault like the one you mentioned. It would be nice if Sonic would be the one in the wrong for once and would had to apologize to Antoine) I just don't get how a character can get flanderized as much in the span of only 26 episodes XD Antoine from SatAM is one of a few Sonic characters that I really hate but luckily he is LOT better in the Archie Comics :)
What Could Have Been: The show's third season was completely laid out and prepared, and then ABC cancelled it: -The Freedom Fighters (now called "Freedom Builders") would have begun the process of rebuilding Mobotropolis, Rotor spearheading the transformation, and Sonic finding that Victory Is Boring. Unbeknown to them, Snively would be sneaking about Robotropolis, gathering intel on the Freedom Fighters and plotting to attack them outright. For a time, Snively is able to place himself in a position of power, proving himself as formidable a foe as Robotnik, if not more so. However, his time as head villain would prove short lived thanks to the efforts of the Freedom Fighters, and in a moment of desperation would free Naugus, Robotnik, and King Acorn from the void. Naugus immediately takes on the title of main villain, using the King as bait to lure Sally in, and making Snively nothing. Robotnik's nephew was slated to defect to the Freedom Fighters in retaliation, although he would secretly plan to betray them at some point, Antoine being the only one to notice - and ultimately stop - Snively's plans. -The show apparently would have eventually confirmed, as some fans had already speculated, that Mobius was Earth All Along, with the story set millennia after a world-purging nuclear war that wiped out humans and caused animals to become sapient. Robotnik and Snively were to be the last humans alive and had been off-planet on a space colonization mission when the war struck. After betraying and killing the rest of their crew, they returned to Earth and, due to relativity, landed after the animals had already assumed control of the planet. -Tails would have matured and played a much larger role as an official member of the Freedom Fighters, even showing a bit of a rebellious side and would save Knothole Village from a major disaster. Furthermore, his relationship with Sonic would have been closer to the games. Dulcy would have come into her full powers. All Ben Hurst said about that was, “You don’t want to see a dragon when she gets mad.” -Sally would be romanced by someone other than Sonic, though in the end Sonic would eventually come out on top. Sonic would also undergo a major personality change. -Nicole's backstory would be told, revealing that she was once a Mobian child that was brainwashed into a computer program by Robotnik. At some point NICOLE would be restored to her former self, becoming a part of the Freedom Fighters. -At some point, Knothole would "get crunched". -Knuckles was supposed to appear at the end of the season and was going to be more of a main character for an also never made fourth season.
Ben Hurst really stepped up to the plate after the rest of the team was let go. It's a shame there was so much executive meddling, and now Ben Hurst is dead. I do wish a season 3 would be realised one day that follows that basis, but it's highly unlikely.
@@WaterCrane There's a fan project seeking to do just that. Seems they're pretty far along, and even got the singer of Crush40 to cover the theme song.
My favorite episode is when Eggman makes a robot copy of Sally to trick Sonic while the real Sally is trapped. Only Tails knows the truth and tries to warn Sonic but he doesn’t believe him. Sonic figures out the truth and he saves the real Sally. I like this episode because it shows that Tails knows Sally by heart and Bunnie has her moment to shine in this episode. My favorite quote she says is “Sometimes a metal body comes in handy, but I still have something a robot will never have, a mind and a heart of my own.” Also, I thought the ending with Sally and Tails was heartwarming.
Favourite part/episode Robotnik: "Snively, what colour is my heart?" **Puts Snivelys head down his throat** Snively: "I don't see a heart sir..." Robotnik: "Exactly." Robotnik is pure evil in SatAM, not a bumbling bafoon.
to be fair he's also pure evil in AOSTH, but he just gets screwed over in more humorous ways and he isn't as successful. i feel like robotnik just isn't allowed to be as evil as he used to be
Executive Meddling: -Sega Enterprises was known to make frustrating and seemingly-arbitrary demands. For example, like many American cartoons, the characters were all originally designed with four fingers instead of five. The designs were approved by Sega of America, but were rejected by Sega Enterprises, who were reportedly afraid that it would be associated with the Yakuza's tendency to chop off victims' fingers. This resulted in DiC having to reanimate a number of already-completed scenes to include additional fingers. -Almost all of the writing staff who worked on Season 1 were removed sometime before development of Season 2 began, leaving Ben Hurst as essentially the sole writer for the series going forward. -The remaining staff were pushed to create Dulcy to balance out the gender ratio of the Freedom Fighters. -The four Antoine shorts were also a request of executives (ABC), as a part of their demand to lighten up the series by adding more comedy.
"-The four Antoine shorts were also a request of executives (ABC), as a part of their demand to lighten up the series by adding more comedy. " That is the part when executives don't get that kids are just inexperienced adults! They can take the harsh stories as long as you take their inexperienced into account!
6:16 apparently the cancelled season 3 was going to have it revealed that Uncle Chuck actually is Sonic's only relative he had as it would have been revealed that Sonic's parents died sometime after he was born and so Uncle Chuck decides to become his nephew's Guardian
I actually did like how the shows version of Robotnik is a cyborg as a result of a Robotization accident and thus the character see's himself as more machine than man
I never saw SatAM as a kid, but I watched the entire series about a year and a half ago for one week and then I started having weird dreams about Kath Soucie. Sad, but true story.
Sonic SATAM in general, was my favorite show to watch as a kid, and while I did catch the slap stick sonic show before school as well, i was always more hungry for the SATAM series even as a kid. It felt more intense and engaging to watch. I felt more victorious at the end, and then there was the theme song. SOME SPOILERS BELOW FOR ARCHIE COMIC SONIC SERIES That, and the Dr Robotnik, hands down, is the BEST version of Robotnik ever made, assuming you dont count the Archie comics transition of the SATAM series. Where they basically go at some point a long while in "Robotnik has known about Knotholes location, and capabilities for quite some time, and has allowed them to keep gaining ground, as a good sport, to which he has grown bored and then proceeds to just lay waste to EVERYTHING." Took me by suprise and i loved the twist, took sonic a bit to come back and fix things, but yea. Was a great arc.
6:09 fun fact Uncle Chuck was voiced by the late William Windom who I have to say does a fantastic job as the character Uncle Chuck giving him this very gruff oldtimer sounding voice that just suits his character as a kind elderly and fatherly uncle character
I remember when I was old enough and actually started paying more attention to acting credits n' such, it blew my mind that he was both the voice of Uncle Chuck in one of my favorite cartoons growing up, and the actor for Matt Decker in one of my favorite Star Trek TOS episodes. He definitely had fantastic acting chops.
That’s correct… Except for one thing. Unlike Sonic, Antoine and Snively turned out to be cowards (not to mention Sonic, Antoine and Sally would even be in a love triangle (or square if counting Griff, something that took centre stage in the Archie Sonic comics of the early-mid 2000s before Ian Flynn) in episode 10 of Sonic SatAM). But outside of that, this indeed feels more like a 2000s Sonic story (re: the Sonic Adventure duology, Sonic Advance 3 (the only one with the most story and even voice acting, albeit non-extensive), Sonic ‘06 (controversial game, but filled to the brim with both bad and good qualities), Sonic Riders: Zero Gravity, Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Sonic Unleashed and Mario & Sonic at the Winter Olympic Games for the DS) than a 2010s one (re: Sonic Free Riders, Sonic Colours (for home consoles), Sonic Generations (which I kinda sorta like, but definitely don’t love as much as the majority (though I can see why it’s exalted) because it’s a 2010s Sonic game), Sonic Lost World, Sonic Boom games (mainly Rise of Lyric) and especially Sonic Forces (and I thought SLW was the worst!).)! Not to mention the fact that the common complaint that Sonic in the Archie Comics never learned to be a decent human (or in this case, hedgehog) being even after issue 179 and Antoine did (people just like to make Sally and Tails and the rest of Sonic’s friends look justified in their actions (which in this case is fighting Sonic instead of fighting alongside him just because he’s making his own decisions even if it meant saving the world instead of having a girlfriend) while portraying Antoine as a guy who would go from a snivelling snob to a brave knight, which we had to wait until Flynn would take over to finally take the characters a lot more seriously), smh.
Voices in One Room: A variation was used: Most of the cast, who were largely composed of veteran voice actors, performed in the same room, with the sole exception of Jaleel White (Due to high school and Family Matters). While this made it hard to play off of the rest of the cast, he also had more takes to work with. *This was especially true* for Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog and Sonic Underground, because those two shows did their recording in Canada 🇨🇦 while White was in Los Angeles.
4:27 in my head Canon the reason for Antione's rude arrogant Vain and passive-aggressive persona is meant to stem from the fact that he what was before the takeover from an aristocratic family as well as his quote on quote crush on Sally and his hate for Sonic is also meant to stem from the fact that Antoine was originally arranged to marry her and he essentially see Sonic as someone that I would ruin everything Antoine have been told by his parents would happen plus it's also indicated that Antoine's parents likely mollycoddled him way too much as he tries to look like a typical hero type but at his Heart he is a coward
The Archie comics eventually establish that Antoine’s blowhard nature is a deliberate coping mechanism on his part to deal with his crippling cowardice, and his issues with Sonic stem from his need to live up to his family’s history as noble knights. Also, in the comics he eventually develops as a character to the point where he stops pursuing Sally after realizing it just wasn’t going to happen, begins an actual relationship with Bunnie Rabbot, and even marries her (despite neither of them being old enough to buy alcohol) in a full ceremony with Rotor the Walrus officiating and Sonic and Sally as Best Man & Maid of Honor, respectively. Meanwhile, Sonic’s relationship with Sally spontaneously combusted and left him in Relationship Limbo, while Sally went on to be ship-teased with (1) a jackass skunk half-a-decade older than her, (2) the most creatively-uninspired Monkey King clone in existence, and (3) NICOLE, the A.I. assistant on her smartphone. You might be thinking that I’m joking with that last one. You’d be _partially_ correct. See, after a while NICOLE developed free-will, a personality, the ability to experience emotions, and body identity. Eventually she developed a means to holographically project herself into the real world so she could actually be with the people she had learned to care about. The story that introduced ‘Nicole the Holo-Lynx’ is generally considered to be incredibly touching and did a great job changing the status-quo in a way that wouldn’t upset readers. It is also the Ignition Point for the ‘Sallicole’ ship. Word of warning though, the art for the comics varied _drastically_ depending on who was doing it that day, so if you go looking for stuff and keep thinking “why can I only find fan-done redraws, where’s the original?” the answer is the ‘fan-done redraws’ _are_ the originals, no really I’m serious, art direction at Archie actually was _that_ shit.
@@Xalerdane It goes to show that the story and concepts were strong enough to keep the comic going as long as it did, despite how the execution of the artwork and said story could be at times. I'm very much in the "Archie Sonic wasn't great until Ian Flynn and Tracey Yardley / other fresh artists came onto the scene" camp, but I'd be lying if I said the series didn't have great concepts and moments throughout its run prior to that point. It saddens me that the things SatAM and Archie built up have been left in the dust these past years. It was a cool alternate take on the Sonic series.
@@Xalerdaneoh okay so they intentionally were hinting at feelings between Sally and Nichole? I honestly thought I was imagining that or reading too much into it.
Dulcy was forced in too. She never got to have her origin story animated. That ended up in the comics instead. It wouldn't be so bad if it had happened in season 1 like with Bunnie, but season 2 is a year after season 1 and having no explanation for a brand new character and having everyone already know her is confusing. Same deal with the nanny character in Blast To The Past as well as Dulcy's mom. I'm sure if there was time, they would all be more fleshed out. Heck a third season could explain it all with flashbacks.
My favorite episode is Sonics nightmare because it goes into Sonics fear and we see him lose his confidence but overcome nonetheless. It’s pretty impressive.
My favorite episode? Sonic Boom and Sonic Racer, for nostalgia: those were the only episodes I remembered from my youth, and memories of them led me to rediscover the series in adulthood.
This is pretty minor but I wouldn't judge Rangers based on how Forces was. Sonic Team has not only been merged with another division of Sega, but has been moved back to America for the first time since 06/the Adventure games. They aren't the same group anymore, and Pontaff (the writers from Colors-Forces) are no longer involved in the series Also Antoine is amazing how dare you.
@Sonic it's not. In fact, the high budget dark age games sold more than most of the meta era ones. Because they actually had appeal. Regardless of reception the 2000's games sold well, 06 was a market success despite that. And now that kind of rushing is commonplace sadly yet people still buy such disasters. So they really don't have much to risk there. They are simply trying to put as little effort as possible for the most money.
@Games Now that more information has come out, we can safely say the game is at the very least not rushed. They delayed it a year to develop it Plus, with Ian Flynn as the writer, the story is gonna be great
I never finished watching Sonic SatAm, but I will admit, I had fun watching it! Honestly, if they made a follow up series of SatAm, I would definitely enjoy IT more than SatAm!
Even though you said Sonic is arrogant and rude in this show I also think he is pretty relatable two especially in one of the later episodes where where you showing to his more sensitive side such as suffering from post traumatic stress disorder from witnessing his Uncle Chuck getting Robotisized in front of him when he was 5 during the takeover as well as the thought of losing Sally
The theme song is very memorable. I watched these episodes every Saturday. Robotnik's voice actor did a superb job with the character, making Robotnik one of my favorite characters of all time. Satam Robotnik and Sonic CD's time travel mechanic were inspiration for my screen name.
Season 2 is controversial due to Ben Hurst wanting it to flow like a big long movie and ABC pushing him to wedge unrelated comedy episodes in-between. That is the reason for the shorter episodes. Blame ABC.
I always thought of the adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog being more of an homage to classic slapstick cartoons like Looney Tunes and the old Disney cartoons which you can definitely see that in Sonic's design
I loved watching this show while it was on netflix. I did another marathon of it 3 years ago and still thought highly of it moving forward. SatAM truly had an amazing story and wonderful elements which enhanced the feel of it.
In addition, I'd like to mention that I've seen Star Wars Visions, that collection of Star Wars anime shorts on Disney+, which I think along with The Mandalorian, is better than the sequel trilogy, and I am eager for The Ghost and Molly McGee along with Amphibia Season 3. Anything you look forward to this final quarter of the year, especially for the holidays?
Star Wars Visions was a fun anime experiment. I hope they make more shorts like that. As for things I'm excited for the holidays, I'm looking forward to Pokemon Brilliant Diamond. Pokemon Diamond was one of my very first DS games, and I have fond memories with it. Did you ever grow up with Pokemon?
@@lysander789 I've heard of Pokemon in my childhood, but don't seem to get my hands on any of the games, although someone close to me did get Pokemon Unite on the Switch, and I also saw the Detective Pikachu movie, which I can say was the only good video game film adaptation (until Sonic '20 came). Not to mention, Illumination's working on an animated Mario movie, and the cast was recently revealed, which is interesting. Hope they got what it takes.
SatAm is the magnum opus of Sonic media because it was written with universal truths and that though the victory is gained, it is not without sacrifice.
I finished the series a month ago and man it was definitely a good one. The emotion, the darkness and the storyline was incredible. Uncle Chuck was such an underrated character. He's always willing to do anything to help Sonic and he had me crying every time he was on screen. Especially the episodes Ultra Sonic (the one mentioned in this video. The ending broke my heart to see Sonic unable to save his uncle at the end and seeing him cry) Sonic Conversation (Where they finally managed to turn Bunnie and Chuck back to normal for a short period of time until the effects wore off, turning them back into robots and Sonic managed to restore his mind with his power rings. But he had to leave his uncle behind again) SpyHog (the ending where Chuck still refused to come back to knothole and demanded to stay in his hideout until Robotnik is defeated. Seeing him shed a tear at the end of the episode made me burst into tears because they had to leave him behind not once, not twice, but three times. I feel bad for Sonic) It's a shame the show ended on a cliffhanger but there's a group called Team Sea3on who's making a fan funded 3rd season of the show. You should check out their work, it's amazing.
5:42 Yeah, Ultra Sonic is a very good episode. Definitely one of the best. Super Sonic (the premier episode on September 18th 1993), is one that holds a lot of sentimental value for me as it's the one that started it all and got me interested in the show (and brand, though mostly because I loved Sally). Sonic Racer is pretty good. I like Spyhog. Blast From the Past has good world building. It's hard to pick a favorite.
15:55 - Ben Hurst did mention in a chat log years back that he had plans to include the Chaos Emeralds later on down the line, but the show got cancelled before he had the chance to get the story to that point. He also wanted to bring in Knuckles, though he didn't say what role he would play in the show.
And I guess after they designed him before the show had the plug they decided not to waste the character design and use it for the very next and last Sonic series to be made by DIC Sonic Underground arguably the worst Sonic cartoon
@@williampulfer-melville8536 I did a bit of digging, and apparently there was an idea that Ben Hurst had floated to Pat Allee about Knuckles possibly being the captain of some sort of sky pirate crew. Whether this was seriously considered, or just a bullet point in a brainstorm isn't known. I kind of like the hook though. Maybe I'll use it in a future fanfic, if I ever get back to writing them. Also apparently he had something major in store for Antoine that would finally properly develop his character, as well as some kind of revelation about Bunnie and her roboticized limbs. My guess on the latter was it was either going to be something about the process completing itself, which would put the FFs on a time limit to find a way to stop it, or it was going to be a situation where they definitively created a de-roboticizer and she had to choose whether to use it or not, fearing that she would be less useful to the cause without her robotic limbs.
@@williampulfer-melville8536 I think that could make for a good story for Bunnie, say she gets her limbs back without risk of a relapse and she loves it, but finds she cannot contribute like she used to be able to. So later she's forced to choose to be partially re-roboticised to save her friends, like a noble sacrifice choice. Giving up personal happiness for her friends.
3:53 plus let's be honest it is kinda indicated in the show that Bunnie has a crush on Sonic despite the fact she is very aware that he has a crush on her best friend Sally
I would have preferred Bunnie x Sonic over Sally x Sonic. Sonic and Sally just clash too much, she's too reserved and tied down and he's too reckless and free spirited. Antoine would be a better fit for Sally since he greatly admires her and would want to be by her side when she's Queen. Sonic would get bored very quickly being tied down to serving Sally. Bunnie's alot more of a free spirit who isn't tied down to a throne.
I have 2 episodes that are my favorite in this show: The 2 parter time travel episode (mainly because it was Sonic Generations of the 90's), and Doomsday Project, because it felt like a great ending. I'd say just take out the cliffhanger and the episode would be a perfect conclusion to the series.
My friends and I loved this show when it was first run, and my best friend and I got heavy into the comics soon after it was pulled from airing. Lots of time spent going to each other's houses, burning through a stack of comics, then playing S2 or S3&K. Favorite episodes have got to be the Uncle Chuck episodes, the one with the buzzsaw walker trying to wipe out the Great Forest, and the one where they stumble into a literally underground Freedom Fighter city they never knew about. Some episodes were way heavier than kids understood, like when Sally was searing for evidence of her father after learning he was taken prisoner and not done away with right away, but the tone of the second season shifted to be a bit softer in look and gravity until the two part finale. Would've loved a third season to tie it all together.
This is the most intimidating Robotnik has every been. Like he is an actual threat. Jim Cummings as Robotnik is just great. I actually thought Antoine was not too bad. The way he would mess up common phrases can be funny. Like that time he said he had fried egg on his face, I was like WTF lol. Overall, a really good Sonic cartoon. It screams 1990s, but it adds to its charm. I can see why it has a cult following.
Certainly one of the best Sonic cartoons. Even as far as saying this cartoon was perhaps the reason why the Sonic Archie Comics went for as long as it did back in the day with a strong fanbase that was brought in from the series.
Despite not watching it when it aired, I watched it on DVD along with Sonic Underground and The Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog. I HIGHLY recommend Sonic SatAM.
One of the things that actually surprised me about the show was blast to the past part 1 and 2 where it was revealed that prior to the takeover of Mobotropolis reveals that Robotnik used to be the prime minister to the kingdom of Acorn and from what we gather he only took over because of the fact he is prejudice against animals
What I'm curious about are the events of the Great War King Acorn thanked him for? The comics made it clear Robotnik defected to join the Mobins. I wonder if Robotnik tried and failed to overthrow the first group only to use a refined plan on the Mobins.
SATAM is definitely my favorite Sonic cartoon. I don't care for AoSTH, Underground, or Sonic X. I can watch SATAM multiple times, unlike the other shows. Sonic X I saw once and that's good enough for me. I wish we could get another Sonic show similar to SATAM.
the blast to the past episodes are my most memorable, also the fact that Sally actually managed to change things by saving the nanny... cant remember her name ATM but Sally was able to change the timeline, with very little change might i add... would love to see the Masterpiece of Sonic SatAM finally seen to full fruition, at least to honor the memory of Ben Hurst... RIP
Myself being around 6 years old when I first watched the show on TV, this is a respectable and fair review from the perspective of someone who missed out due to being born later and the show stopped rerunning. It's hard to deny the 90's fads that were popular around the time to be appealing to kids back then, the whole aggressive, rebellious "in-your-face" against grownups thing was practically everywhere (old Nintendo ads like the "Play It Loud" era being an example). The catchphrases drilled into our heads due to how frequently they were uttered by Sonic, along with the obsession with Chili Dogs that surprisingly and eventually became canon in the games... It does get grating, I'll admit. Plus yeah, Antoine being the comic relief was sorta overdone, some character growth of him learning to be brave would've been an interesting story arc had they taken that chance. The cliffhanger for a season 3 was something that haunted many fans of the show from my generation for decades wanting to know what would happen next... closest thing to closure we got was fans chatting with one of the lead writers, Ben Hurst, on what he originally had planned had the story continued, in which many of those fans took it upon themselves to make their own interpretation of a continuation based upon the notes Hurst shared to fans before he sadly passed away. The closest thing we had to a continuation was the Archie comics, which was a spiritual continuation as it followed similar things from the show, but plenty of differences with its own continuity... and having read the comics since the very beginning, I also don't blame you for skipping out. The writing got confusing due to a Star Trek fan who worked on the Star Trek The Next Generation comics shoehorning in his obsession with sci-fi and political drama into the Sonic comics, having never played a single game until eventually getting replaced by someone far better who actually grew up with Sonic and the games. Also yes, I've been saying this for years... Forces was basically an extremely poor attempt to replicate SatAM, there was potential had they put more work into it and not rushed it out.
I am not sure what episode of this series is my favorite. I suppose I'll decide as I continue with my Everything Wrong With series on this show alongside Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog, which I also like. I understand why some people would favor SATam over AoSTH, but AoSTH has a pretty good charm with its characters. I used to make all sorts of videos featuring characters from both series as well as some fanfiction, which I am actually looking back on as I am writing this and am thinking "Could this have ever worked?" I suppose that is just how it goes when you look over some fan work you made over 10 years ago and realize how things work in the world. Perhaps as I get older, I'll figure out just how good of a series I could make as I had been wanting to for probably the entire time I've been using the internet.
I saw this show when I was on my 20s, do to the fact in my country this show never appears in TV, except AOSTH and Underground. Is better than any of those 2, but always keep the AOSTH one a special place. 8:12 - My Thoughts EXACTLY!!!
You keep mentioning that Forces did the Eggman takes over the world plotpoint after SatAM, but Unleashed has also already did the same thing as well. And Unleashed was released before Forces. Also its a bit jarring to keep calling that version of Robotnik Eggman. I get you grew up way after the 90s, but do keep in mind throughout his existence in the 90s he was ALWAYS called Robotnik.
Im waiting for underground honestly, even though it never got finished it was far more noteable for me in my childhood, I always loved the darkish story and I find it comical that sonic has siblings
I'm kinda worried that he's going to hate it. If he doesn't like it, that's fine. It seems like Sonic Underground has the lowest fanbase out of all of the Sonic shows. Adventures had funny internet memes from it, Satam has a fanbase that's still strong to this day, Sonic X introduced a voice cast that fans grew to like, Sonic Boom has funny 4th wall breaks. What does Sonic Underground have that people actually like from it? What do you think? I enjoy all of the Sonic cartoons.
@@kylesmyle4233 I thought it had pretty memorable characters and some interesting world-building. It’s not often that you get a Sonic series, let alone a TV show, that delves into topics regarding classism and politics. It’s a much more morally grey world than the one SatAM presented.
@@kylesmyle4233 Despite the design(although it's just like in classic games) Underground Knuckles is probably the best version in terms of character balance(even somewhat better than movie version). He is a naive loner and actually level-headed but not stupid like in the games or one-note bruiser from Sonic X. Because of it the show has the most interesting plot of his and Robotnik's team up and made Ivo a more asshole to echidna than usual
Screwed by the Network: Despite pulling in solid ratings against Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers and being connected with a mega-hit game series, Sonic the Hedgehog got cancelled for *two reasons:* Disney had just bought ABC and decided to clean house concerning their Saturday lineup (which would lead to One Saturday Morning emerging a couple years later), and many of ABC's stations tended to delay the lineup or preempt it entirely to air local news or sports. As a result, some people didn't see the show until USA Network put it on as part of their Action Extreme Team block.
Why we got Two Sonic the Hedgehog animated series in 1993: Before production began, Sega of America CEO Tom Kalinske and its newly appointed consumer products director Michealene Risley approached DiC Entertainment's CEO Andy Heyward and the ABC network to produce a television show featuring Sonic. After being shown the character, Heyward agreed to make the show and was granted the license. According to Robby London, DiC originally made a deal to produce only the Saturday morning Sonic series for the ABC network. The cartoon was originally planned to be more light-hearted compared to the final product, as reflected by its pilot episode, early promotional material found in Fleetway's Sonic the Comic and the early issues of Sonic the Hedgehog comics by Archie, which were based on the Saturday morning Sonic cartoon. However, DiC also wanted to go further and produce additional episodes for weekday syndication as well, similar to what DiC has previously done with The Real Ghostbusters, but Mark Pedowitz, the then-senior vice president of business affairs and contracts at ABC, who expected the Sonic cartoon to air exclusively on ABC, rejected the idea, telling London *”If you guys want to do syndication, be our guest, go with God, but you won’t be on our network."* ABC would not agree to the deal until London came with a proposition that DiC would produce a separate, vastly different Sonic show for syndication instead, the end result of which became Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog. As a result, the Saturday morning Sonic cartoon was made darker and more serious in order to distinguish itself from the syndicated Sonic cartoon. The show bible for the Saturday morning Sonic cartoon was written in February 1992 with the final revision made on March 10, 1993.
My favorite is Hooked on Sonic because it was the very first time I ever saw the sonic cartoon. I was eight years old and just got my sega genesis, where I played Sonic the hedgehog. I was channel surfing when I saw Robotnik threatening Antoine. I went back because he looked like Robotnik with that mustache. That I realized it was Robotnik. It was the first time I ever saw Sonic show and I was hooked. Yeah, Antoine can be annoying, but they give him more development in the comics. They even have him and Bunnie marry. They are adorable as a couple.
My favorite episode was when Sonic & Sally go back into the past to warn Chuck & King Acorn about Robotnik's betrayal. Even when they tried, they were unable to stop Robotnik, no matter what they did. There was no way the timeline can ever be changed for them.
That may be true, but what they did still mattered. They got the original Roboticizer plans, making them one step closer to reverse engineering a cure. They saved their past selves, including a few others, so many people who were roboticized would live normal lives in Knothole. And of course, they saved the only family Sally and Sonic had left, their Nanny Rosie, who would never live to become a slave to Robotnik.
Actually AOSTH and SatAM weren't air on the same channel yes the SatAM was aired on ABC and Jaleen White was basically the voice of Sonic from the early to mid 90s but The AOSTH show was aired by UPN aka Fox both seasons I remember because I had to risk being late for school just watch episodes or wait until a holiday or Summer besides the times my father would by the tapes.
Well the Adventure games had a serious tone too. Maybe not exactly like SatAM but for sure those games are way better than most of today’s games, and definitely better than Forces. Not to mention Eggman threatening to kill Amy in SA 2. And my favorite show is actually Sonic X, but I still admire the serious tone of this show, especially Robotnik.
@CP D2191 Read it again. I didn’t say he sounds exactly like Jim Cummings in SatAM, but I am talking about how Eggman used to be so evil, threatening to make mincemeat out of Tails, and screaming to Sonic in the intercom that if he didn’t show up, Amy will die. My point is I was comparing to the Eggman we have today where he isn’t so intimidating, especially in Boom, he is just sort of like a frienemy than an enemy in both the games and show.
Love how everyone is like "the adventure games have darker tones." Bruh, compared to any actual dark games (Ninja Gaiden, Darksiders, Tekken, Metal Gear Solid, Bloodborne,DmC devil may cry, etc) it's the most kiddish thing ever. Sure for a E game I guess it is kinda serious, but in reality it's just a fanbase trying to cover why the game has not aged well, in terms of looks, gameplay and story
For the record, I've HATED "Eggman" as a name forever, and I'm glad that in some Sonic media it's just a nickname. Also, Antoine is, in fact, Rob Paulsen's favorite role. THIS ANNOYING FRENCHMAN IS HIS FAVORITE.
When you asked what was you favourite Sonic SatAM episode I thought to myself Ultra Sonic, the one where he is reunited with Chuck and when you said that was your favourite the kid in me was like "yes", just the emotion in that was so perfect and the atmosphere was outstanding, plus Chuck was another of my favourites in the show, even if he was in a few episodes, Dang I feel like I am 12 again back in 1993 and watching these for the first time, it was so good, yeah I admit was like unsure because Robotnik/Eggman was different, but however I liked how they did him, he was scary, dark and twisted, not a care in his robotic heart, even though Snively said he didn't see a heart in that one episode :D, but the whole show was great for me and it had me wanting more, so you could say that brung out the fanboy in me :D
Honestly, while I've never watched many of these 90's video games cartoon shows (like, the only one I remember were some episodes of super Mario world, haven't watched super Mario Bros 3, super Mario Bros super show, Zelda TV series AOSTH or Sonic Satam.) But I find it fascinating that since the source material was so vague, instead of adapting stuff, they truly created their own thing, like the Mario Bros super show created stuff like that location where pasta grows on threes or something like that's and Satam tried giving an explanation to the rings or putting a unique spin on the fact that eggman roboticices animals and stuff, like, I bet that that new sonic show that's coming out next year won't have stuff like that, because it would be inaccurate to the source material. And while that is true, that's exactly what makes these 90s video game cartoons so interesting to me.
I don't really remember a lot of the episodes. I did really like the show along with Underground and AOSTH. My favorite episode from AOSTH was the episode where Tails finds this weird black ball thing and Sonic, Tails, and weird Black Blob have a picnic with chili dogs.
5:43 My favorite episodes from the series were Super Sonic - (Shows how sonic is more than just his speed) Sonic Boom - Sonic and Sally - (Shows the bond between Sonic and Sally as well as the abilities of most Freedom Fighters) Sonic Nightmare - (Shows how Sonic overcame his fear from a nightmare) Sonic Racer - No Brainer Blast to the Past Spyhog - (Shows how Snively has grown more from being Robotnik's "Yes man", also how he has his own reasons to hate Sonic) Doomsday Project
The adventure stories were pretty dark in places. Remember when eggman's grandpa got executed? And his nephew with space aids got shot to cover up a military experiment?
9:50 - The Robotnik/Snively relationship is something that was seen in other media over the years, before and after SatAM. One of the most famous instances is with Megatron and Starscream in Transformers. You can almost put certain scenes side by side with one another.
A really good show and one of my favorite childhood shows. My top 5 episodes would be; 1. The Doomsday Project 2. Blast to the Past 3. The Void 4. No Brainer 5. Super Sonic Honorable mentions; Sonic and Sally Ultra Sonic Game Guy Sonic Conversion
Approval of God: Naoto Ohshima, the creator of Sonic the Hedgehog, has said in Twitter posts that he enjoys Sonic SatAM. The DiC staff gave him a poster of the show's characters, which he keeps framed in glass:
"Sonic was born in the image of the United States. I love American Sonic. Thank you." - Naoto Ohshima
Tragic when you consider SoJ’s refusal to acknowledge the Satam characters these days after Archie Sonic’s cancellation.
@@bazzjedimaster Yet Sonic’s more popular in America and Europe than he is in Japan. Also he’s the one who produced Balan Wonderland after all...

I have a strong attatchment to a lot of these characters through growing up on the comics and it makes me a little sad that neither the show or the comics got their proper conclusions so there was never a proper send off for iconic characters like Sally and Bunnie
Are you following Sea3on?
I also have a pretty cool project going: Sonic SatAM RPG
@AstonishingRedd I hope that’s not the case! They’ve made some decent progress. Their only goal is to make one episode right now.
We almost had a proper conclusion to SatAM but suposedly Penders screwed that up by throwing the guy wanting to make season 3 under the bus to try to make his own sequel movie Sonic Armageddon (you can find the trailer on UA-cam)
Hell It wouldn't even need a sequel if they just didn't add in that cliffhanger.
Mobious 25 years later was the conclusion
Im glad the comics made antoine go through an arc. He started out with his satam personality but eventually grew into the great warrior he always said he was. Plus his relationship with bunnie is great.
SO TRUE!!! I hated him in the show and was surprised at how genuinely good of a character developed into in the comics.
The worst thing against Antoine is that he is progressively getting worse! He was fine in the first season and actually got out a few chuckles out of me. He had some level of competence and his rivalry with Sonic was actually set on somewhat equal footing (like in the episode set in underground city)
And then in season two he literally trips over his own legs like 5 different times, is scared of his own shadow and his bumbling incompetence is barely even noticed by his companions. Also he is forced into like every episode or even gets two episodes (with 2 stories each) that focus solely on showing how much of an idiot he is (even in episodes where it's not really his fault like the one you mentioned. It would be nice if Sonic would be the one in the wrong for once and would had to apologize to Antoine)
I just don't get how a character can get flanderized as much in the span of only 26 episodes XD Antoine from SatAM is one of a few Sonic characters that I really hate but luckily he is LOT better in the Archie Comics :)
At least he's pretty alright in the [Archie] comics.
In the comics, he's actually pretty badass.

What Could Have Been:
The show's third season was completely laid out and prepared, and then ABC cancelled it:
-The Freedom Fighters (now called "Freedom Builders") would have begun the process of rebuilding Mobotropolis, Rotor spearheading the transformation, and Sonic finding that Victory Is Boring.
All Ben Hurst said about that was, “You don’t want to see a dragon when she gets mad.”
-Sally would be romanced by someone other than Sonic, though in the end Sonic would eventually come out on top.
The thing is back in the day cartoons would be canceled

Speaking of your comment, they should make some episodes about Sally, Tails, and Bunnie.
Favourite part/episode
Robotnik: "Snively, what colour is my heart?" **Puts Snivelys head down his throat**
Snively: "I don't see a heart sir..."
Robotnik: "Exactly."
Robotnik is pure evil in SatAM, not a bumbling bafoon.
to be fair he's also pure evil in AOSTH, but he just gets screwed over in more humorous ways and he isn't as successful. i feel like robotnik just isn't allowed to be as evil as he used to be
Yep he was a no nonsense villain. He did not F around.
Executive Meddling:
-Sega Enterprises was known to make frustrating and seemingly-arbitrary demands.
Stop saying essentially it is a filler word
"-The four Antoine shorts were also a request of executives (ABC), as a part of their demand to lighten up the series by adding more comedy. "
That is the part when executives don't get that kids are just inexperienced adults! They can take the harsh stories as long as you take their inexperienced into account!
RIP, Ben Hurst

I never saw SatAM as a kid, but I watched the entire series about a year and a half ago for one week and then I started having weird dreams about Kath Soucie. Sad, but true story.
They should make an episode about Princess Sally's boots.
I watched an episode of the show every Saturday a few months ago, just like it was meant to. :D Never seen it as a kid either.
Sonic SATAM in general, was my favorite show to watch as a kid, and while I did catch the slap stick sonic show before school as well, i was always more hungry for the SATAM series even as a kid. It felt more intense and engaging to watch. I felt more victorious at the end, and then there was the theme song.
SOME SPOILERS BELOW FOR ARCHIE COMIC SONIC SERIES
That, and the Dr Robotnik, hands down, is the BEST version of Robotnik ever made, assuming you dont count the Archie comics transition of the SATAM series.
"But season two is when the show reached for the stars"
I see what you did here
The irony.
Pontaff made Sonic looks like a SatAM cartoon, while the ACTUAL SatAM is on par with Adventure series in story telling.
That’s correct…
Except for one thing.
Long live the Freedom Fighters. And Sonally
Fun fact Tails was actually Voiced by Bradley Pierce who you may remember as the voice of Chip in Beauty and the Beast
no wonder he sounded so familiar
He more or less comes off like a weird Sonic version of Usopp from One Piece, just with somehow less backbone than Usopp however.
Shut up stop saying essentially

They delayed it a year to develop it

Sonic Conversation (Where they finally managed to turn Bunnie and Chuck back to normal for a short period of time until the effects wore off, turning them back into robots and Sonic managed to restore his mind with his power rings. But he had to leave his uncle behind again)
SpyHog (the ending where Chuck still refused to come back to knothole and demanded to stay in his hideout until Robotnik is defeated. Seeing him shed a tear at the end of the episode made me burst into tears because they had to leave him behind not once, not twice, but three times. I feel bad for Sonic)

That "Torture" thing was introduced in the English dub of Forces, it was a very out of place addition.
My fav Sonic SatAM episode is the one where Princess Sally gets kidnapped and only Tails knows that something is strange about Robot Sally.
I love when sonic says "Gotta juice!"
I didn't even know Sonic Satam existed I only knew about Sonic X and I did have Sonic Satam on DVD.
But I think I lost it.
Enjoy it on Paramount+
My favorite episode is also when he reunites with his uncle!
@@SBaby i lile the sound of that abd i think she would have chosen to have her limbs returned to normal as that is what She wanted
My favorite episode is The Void. Including another dimension was fun, and it had Naugus, one of my favorite Sonic villains.
I have 2 episodes that are my favorite in this show:
The 2 parter time travel episode (mainly because it was Sonic Generations of the 90's), and Doomsday Project, because it felt like a great ending.
This was A ABSOLUTELY BANGER OF A REVIEW
(also say Robotnik if you think Robotnik should've survived the blast in the finale
@Lover of Green this is an AWESOME video dude. Also I loved the time travel episodes
At least Antoine actually has character development in the Archie comics.
@@Zunile03scape well in the Archie comics they do say that the unknown threat were actually humans and humans on Mobius reside in the Overland
My favourite show as a kid was sonic underground. It still holds a special place in my heart ❤️
This is where the lore of chili dogs came from now it's implemented in modern sonic canon
Team Sea3on just dropped the trailer for Sonic SatAM Season 3 & I’m hyped. Let’s hope they fix some of the problems you mentioned here.
Really enjoyed your perspective and presentation and looking forward to seeing your next work. :)
the blast to the past episodes are my most memorable,
also the fact that Sally actually managed to change things by saving the nanny...
cant remember her name ATM but Sally was able to change the timeline,
with very little change might i add...
would love to see the Masterpiece of Sonic SatAM finally seen to full fruition,
at least to honor the memory of Ben Hurst... RIP
This series just feels it could have been a Star Wars 90s cartoon set up between after ep 4 and a bit after 6
I should also note that fans are makign a third season. likely based off of what was planned.
Sonic's Uncle and I have the same name, so whenever Sonic says "Uncle Chuck", it makes me feel like Sonic considers me his uncle, haha.
Awesome video!
My favorite episode is probably either The Void or The Wolf Pack
I saw this show when I was on my 20s, do to the fact in my country this show never appears in TV, except AOSTH and Underground.
Is better than any of those 2, but always keep the AOSTH one a special place.
8:12 - My Thoughts EXACTLY!!!
9:55 BROOOOOOO I KNOW THAT CLIP!!!! Omg I’ve just recently started watching her videos! Love the fandubs
Sally Acorn is beautiful. I wish Jakks or some other toy company would make a plush or figure of her.
Doomsday Project. My 6 year old heart couldn't handle sonic and sallys kiss
@@geoffreyrichards6079 I've never heard anyone say this for Sonic Underground, thanks for your insight.
I always thought SATAM stood for Sonic and the Adventures on Mobius
Sonic X is my main favorite but Sonic Satam is my favorite 90’s show of Sonic and my main favorite episodes are the time traveling ones.😉
Same here. Sonic X is my show!
Why we got Two Sonic the Hedgehog animated series in 1993:
Before production began, Sega of America CEO Tom Kalinske and its newly appointed consumer products director Michealene Risley approached DiC Entertainment's CEO Andy Heyward and the ABC network to produce a television show featuring Sonic.
The most accurate sonic 1 adaptation (same plot)

I have 5.
5. Sonic’s Nightmare
4. The Void
3. Sonic Conversion
2. The Doomsday Project
1. Blast to the Past 1/2
Perfect Chaos gave me nightmares as a kid
@@pepesilvia429 Mine was Zero. Lol.😂 The robot in Amy’s story. And I used to be afraid of the Mystic Ruins soundtrack to be honest, but not anymore.
@CP D2191 Well I am not saying he sounds like him. Just comparing to the Eggman we have now.
When you asked what was you favourite Sonic SatAM episode I thought to myself Ultra Sonic, the one where he is reunited with Chuck and when you said that was your favourite the kid in me was like "yes", just the emotion in that was so perfect and the atmosphere was outstanding, plus Chuck was another of my favourites in the show, even if he was in a few episodes,
Dang I feel like I am 12 again back in 1993 and watching these for the first time, it was so good, yeah I admit was like unsure because Robotnik/Eggman was different, but however I liked how they did him, he was scary, dark and twisted, not a care in his robotic heart, even though Snively said he didn't see a heart in that one episode :D, but the whole show was great for me and it had me wanting more, so you could say that brung out the fanboy in me :D
When I used to rent these 90s cartoons (Sonic SatAM,Mario super show, legend of Zelda, etc.) they were amazing and still are
Honestly, while I've never watched many of these 90's video games cartoon shows (like, the only one I remember were some episodes of super Mario world, haven't watched super Mario Bros 3, super Mario Bros super show, Zelda TV series AOSTH or Sonic Satam.) But I find it fascinating that since the source material was so vague, instead of adapting stuff, they truly created their own thing, like the Mario Bros super show created stuff like that location where pasta grows on threes or something like that's and Satam tried giving an explanation to the rings or putting a unique spin on the fact that eggman roboticices animals and stuff, like, I bet that that new sonic show that's coming out next year won't have stuff like that, because it would be inaccurate to the source material.
I was so happy to hear Spark music in here! Great job!
5:43 My favorite episodes from the series were
Super Sonic - (Shows how sonic is more than just his speed)
Sonic Boom -
Sonic and Sally - (Shows the bond between Sonic and Sally as well as the abilities of most Freedom Fighters)
Sonic Nightmare - (Shows how Sonic overcame his fear from a nightmare)
Sonic Racer -
No Brainer
Blast to the Past
Spyhog - (Shows how Snively has grown more from being Robotnik's "Yes man", also how he has his own reasons to hate Sonic)
Doomsday Project
can we just appreciate how the "antonnie being bad" part is the longest part in the whole video xDD
The adventure stories were pretty dark in places. Remember when eggman's grandpa got executed? And his nephew with space aids got shot to cover up a military experiment?
I personally liked Antoine. Episodes *about* him didn't work that well but I loved his banter with Sonic, gave me Geralt/Dandelion vibes
9:50 - The Robotnik/Snively relationship is something that was seen in other media over the years, before and after SatAM. One of the most famous instances is with Megatron and Starscream in Transformers. You can almost put certain scenes side by side with one another.
Fun fact: Charlie Adler, who voiced Snively in satam also voiced Starscream in the Michael Bay Transformers movies.
