I would love to see a restoration of this beautiful church how sad to see the demise of such a building how about a fund raiser I am sure many would be supportive, and perhaps help from government, they seem to have money for many worthless causes let them support a home grown charity. from an ex pat living in Canada.
I agree the government could help a lot more with saving beautiful places like this. I have contacted a few agencies that can hopefully help save it. I will do a revisit to show you all if anything has changed. Thank you for watching.
Not an “ancient” church at all; it’s a Victorian Church and as such probably well built and def restorable. The Yorkshire Diocese is entirely responsible for this church. If they can’t keep it in repair they should sell it to someone who would….
The "Friends of Friendless Churches" have taken ownership of a number of churches which are no longer consecrated. Whether they have taken ownership of this particular church though I cannot say.

The memorial to the people who died in action during WW I should be brought to the attention of the British Legion. There are funds available for the restoration and upkeep of War Memorials.

The aesthetics of this building is simply stunning. many of the details hint at just how beautiful this church interior truly is. The windows alone, their shapes are very distinctive and set them apart, harkening to a time before the church was built. The rich colors of the stained glass! 🥰 I bet it would cost a fortune to restore it to its full glory😊🙏❤🩹.
When I see places like this, I like to think of them on their best day. A wedding perhaps, a full congregation, the pastor helps out a couple of souls with their problems, and everyone goes home happy.
I clicked on this because it said Yorkshire church. I was dismayed at the state of that beautiful place. Church of England has a responsibility to look after these places but it probably closed because of lack of parishioners i.e. income. In my last parish we restored and revitalised two derelict churches and now they're thriving. This one is so lovely I hope that the same happens there.
It would be better than having no religious people in the country. Say what you want about religion but it at least helps keep some sort of order in societies. Where I live we have a lot of African and Indian/Sri Lankan christians go to the local churches, and they are really helping to keep christianity going.

Sad to see, we have money to waste on projects like HS2, or cash for migrants but we come up short with buildings like this! This church could be repurposed for the community, or even as a home but I think the costs are now spiralling out of control. The real tragedy is the number of memorials inside that are no longer seen.
Actually our society only started to grow once we started thinking for ourselves and abandoning Christianity. Now if we can get the rest of the nuts supporting the other religions to do the same then we can start properly building up this wonderful country.
An idea would be to track down some members of the community, if there are any, and get some history of the place and therefore discover why it has been abandoned.

Why not make the whole church into a local museum ? - keep the walls dry, repair the roof and rainpipes and find people to restore the things that went into decay
The alter, the stain glass windows and the ceiling above them are exactly the same as the St Augustine Anglican Church here in Inverell NSW Australia. 😲😁😀
Someone has been using this church as late as the 20th century. There are signs that it has n't been abandoned that long. Red carpet, some modern office things, construction, fixtures, etc. It would be interesting to restore it for an event center for weddings, etc. If the cost were not prohibitive. There should be a way to get govt grants for preserving a historic structure.
I hope you closed that door securely when you left to stop destruction by weather and vandals. Somebody obviously tried to keep the church safe by putting up fences but if you can get in through that open door anyone can and their intentions may not be as kind as yours.
This will be a former Church of England building, no signs of key elements you find in a catholic church, ie confessional. Windows obviously date from around 1920 as they commemorate the fallen of the Great War
@@nickjung7394 Yep. This looks to be a Church of England church. A Catholic Church of same era would have been more ornate, with spaces for statues, etc.
A great explore especially being able to go below, I have a similar love for these old churches more so cemetery chappels but i mainly just document the outside as my climbing days are over. It is the underground that interests me most as a lot of these church building once had another life. Great video👍

Looks like a church belonging to the Church of England. Church buildings are normally abandoned when there are no more people going to church to give money to pay for salaries and the upkeep of the church building. It is so sad.
A Victorian church which has modern steel security shutters and fencing on it, so not ancient or lost. There is one that looks much the same within walking distance of me where I live. I would think we have hundreds of abandoned churches around the UK. Church users are a minority these days. My late Uncle was a Priest and when he died his funeral was in the church where he served the Community for most of his adult life, was the last service in the church. It was closed down and now stands boarded up and empty.
What a tragedy. All the churches in my town are active and vibrant ... how we would love to have such a beautiful building. What on earth is going on in the UK? Disgracefull.
It is heartbreaking to see our beautiful Churches in such a poor state of decay, but even more shocked that the Church itself has not continued to maintain these historical buildings for future generations.
That is a lovely old church. I'm surprised it's not offered up to developers to make it into a lovely home. I am spiritual, and would love to live there. Change the toilet into a shower room (with toilet etc)....At 06.16 - wow! That IS a surprise! When you showed us the first bit, I thought that was it, until you opened the door and we see the pews...

Is this church and others like it an example of a country that has turned its back on God. A house of worship no longer lifting up a song of praise. The country falling apart just like the churches.
So very sad to see the condition of this abandoned church and to know that there are many more in a similar state through the falling away by the population generally of Sunday worship.
A lot of old churches have been sympathetically restored into office blocks or workshops, smaller chapels sold off and converted into homes. It could be its location and lack of interest in purchasing that has created its current demise. It is well secured and has kept out casual vandals, but that door needs to be shut on your way out to deter others from making the same way in.
Could've checked out he 'voids' there was somethin under the other side of the church that you didn't check out as well. There's always something more interesting in Churches . . .

the reason some of the keys you tried on the upright piano and the note that stuck is due to moisture in the piano causing the wood in the keys to expand and stick the other instrument would have been an old probably 1960s 70s or 80s electric organ probabl had built in speakers or went to a sound system now unfortunately not used

Whenever i see this common thread of abandonment i think where did we go wrong? Where did everyone go to? Is this our future or is it already our present? Can we redeem ourselves before it’s too late?
The church is beautiful. You shouldn't have shown how you got in as others will follow and trash it inside. This beautiful church is gonna be kept up by the diocese then it should be sold or at least those good wooden doors, etc and those gorgeous stained glass windows need to be taken out and reused. elsewhere.
What a wasteful and sad tragedy! Modern society with its Sunday shopping and working has a lot to answer for. And the effect of all the medias have stripped the moral compass of the masses plus churches - old and new - have lost their way and promote moral decay. I would love to see this church restored but that might just desanctify its purpose!
It’s built of brick so not ancient, probably no more than 150 years old (relatively new in terms of churches in the UK). Churches are being closed because of dwindling congregations, no congregation = no money and unfortunately the buildings can’t be maintained without it and vicars/priests can’t live on fresh air. So instead of making money trespassing in abandoned churches how about visiting a few open ones and putting £’s in the collection tin?
That's all very well but it's always a joy if you actually find a church open! I travel around looking at old churches and many are kept locked (understandably). Then again I visit so many churches that I would need to take out a mortgage if I left something meaningful in the collection at every one plus the need to ensure I have large amounts of cash on my jaunts!

It may be old and abandoned, but it's in great shape! It's terrible that it isn't being put to use.
If the population in the area declined below a certain level it would be too costly to maintain a church like this.

It's hardly historic, probably only 125 years old. If you restore it what do you do with it?

I closed the doors best I could on the way out and I’ve also informed the authorities that it needs sealing up so it doesn’t get destroyed by vandals.

its not forgotten the locals know its there it was built in the 1800's

Whenever i see this common thread of abandonment i think where did we go wrong?

Our host all but ignored the stained glass over the old altar really the only thing of beauty left in tact
The church is beautiful. You shouldn't have shown how you got in as others will follow and trash it inside. This beautiful church is gonna be kept up by the diocese then it should be sold or at least those good wooden doors, etc and those gorgeous stained glass windows need to be taken out and reused. elsewhere.

What a wasteful and sad tragedy! Modern society with its Sunday shopping and working has a lot to answer for. And the effect of all the medias have stripped the moral compass of the masses plus churches - old and new - have lost their way and promote moral decay. I would love to see this church restored but that might just desanctify its purpose!

"Ancient" has a specific definition.
It’s built of brick so not ancient, probably no more than 150 years old (relatively new in terms of churches in the UK). Churches are being closed because of dwindling congregations, no congregation = no money and unfortunately the buildings can’t be maintained without it and vicars/priests can’t live on fresh air. So instead of making money trespassing in abandoned churches how about visiting a few open ones and putting £’s in the collection tin?
That's all very well but it's always a joy if you actually find a church open! I travel around looking at old churches and many are kept locked (understandably). Then again I visit so many churches that I would need to take out a mortgage if I left something meaningful in the collection at every one plus the need to ensure I have large amounts of cash on my jaunts!
