- Big Country.
Track 7 of 9.
As far as I'm aware, this is the only known video footage of the classic Big Country line-up performing the song, 'The Crossing.'
Start of the song is missing unfortunately.
Big Country's 5th ever live show, August 21, 1982.
Peppermint Lounge, New York, supporting The Members and Darlene Love.
"New York, The Big Apple, skyscrapers, yellow taxis, steaming drains... a steaming band - well we were after the show.
Five gigs into the band's lengthy career.
A fixed camera captures what, as I can only remember, a very nervous yet exuberant debut in the USA, in true club-monitoring style.
Supporting The Members and Darlene Love, with the classic collapsing of the drum riser this vid is classic archive material.
It didn't capture the piss up after though...
Aah memories."

Big country at their very best and what a song this is
Great find…. Only seen the band do this once and that was Glasgow Apollo sound check 83… I was working there… and I seen big country 6 times 83 onwards… he really like to let go on the crossing track.. kind of test himself
Love it Love it Love it! Takes me back to 1983 and those Halcyon days of blind hope and unknown regret!
Mark tearing it up on the drums!! fuckin A.....totally underrated......love the rawness of this early show....thanks!
Great early rare version..the b side studio version is my favorite song by any band ever recorded. Like bury me with this song! SA you are a legend

Magic
Absolutely phenominal - cheers for posting! One of my all-time favourites - especially the coda! The 3 over 2 feel in the drumming all the way till 3:32 is just inspirational!
If there ever was a song to rival The Who's Won't Get Fooled Again, as the Quintessential Epic Rock Song, it's "The Crossing"!
Epic song. Can't believe it wasn't on the album of the same name. Think I bought German version so I could get it. R.I.P Stuart . My teenage memories are still with me now. Thanks for posting
to me this is THE quintessential Big Country song, and should have been in every set they ever did.
I wholeheartedly agree.
Awesome, one of my favorite bands, greetings from México
3.01-that Skids spirit!! Love it!
My favorite Big Country song. A b-side no less. Thought I would never hear this live. Thanks so much for posting. I might add that this song really should be 5 or 6 minutes longer. It is that great!
One of my absolute fave songs by BC. I couldn't believe I'd be able to see a live version of it when I bought that video from the Pepp. Lounge. Heartbroken that it starts mid-way through the song, but at least it's something. So much youthful energy on such a complicated song. The lyrics alone are a behemoth. Cheers AI!
DAVID BROWNE of all the songs in the set, THIS is the one BC diehards want to see in full and it's the only one that is cut short!
Great...The crossing is amazing!!
Maps on the back of your hands point to the cross
Scratches on walls in a room draw out your loss
Your islands are conquered and you are returned to the throne
Martyrs take penance and fill up the mattress with stones
Pull straws with holy men
Stain all the atlas pink
And let us find a beach
Where we can cross our hearts
Stand in the wind as the carousels spin
Wear out your welcome again
Stand on the silence of mountains and
Wear out your welcome again
Mornings hit hard with an uncontrollable light
Piercing the senses that click deep in the night
Crouched in a pillow of straw feet on the floor
Creeping a path to the mat that holds back the door
Pull straws with holy men
Stain all the atlas pink
And let us find a beach
Where we can cross our hearts
Build up great railways that run through the horns of the moon
Hold up a city with cast iron museum walls
Explain your machines to the boys, feed them with tools
Bring out the skill in your skin, polish your hair
Pull straws with holy men
Stain all the atlas pink
And let us find a beach
Where we can cross our hearts
Stand in the wind as the carousels spin
Wear out your welcome again
Stand on the silence of mountains
And take your rib down to the sea
The look Stuart giving Bruce @4 min priceless
Beautiful amazing
Amazing footage, thank you.
beautiful, thank you so much, never thought I'd see it... Mark's killing here!
Rarely played live that track… kept alive at sound checks.. trmendous song.. must have been one of Stuart’s favorites pretty complexed
Mark Brzezicki is still my favorite drummer. Somehow he could do melody on the drums.
get it Mark
37 years to the month after seeing this song live in Delaware, I finally got a China Type cymbal so I can sound a tiny bit like Mark when I (try to) play this. And now I get to see it live again. Thank you thank you thank you.
wow!!! this is great
truly a acceptable song for the Messiah second Advent! OORAH!
Awesome find, loving this :)
If only digital recording had existed then. Also, too weird for Alice Cooper.... Beautiful music.
Cheers BC1000stars! Great to see such an early performance. Know if anyone has 1-6 of this gig? Stay Alive!!!
Mark Kiman they're all up on my channel 😊
I am surprised to read this was performed in NY as early as 1982. This would have been a year (or more) before the release of the Crossing (I bought the album in '84) and as far as I am aware, also some time before they released anything in the UK even. I thought their first release was Fields of Fire in early '83.
IqbalHamid Their first single was Harvest Home in Sept 1982!
This song was in the set list in the very early days only 😊
IqbalHamid I'm glad you're enjoying the BC clips!! Thank you for your very kind comments!! Stay alive!!
Andy
Cheers for posting. I have the video tape but who can play it these days? Not me! When I saw The Crossing (song) live, I was just too excited. Stuart's a bit over-zealous at this early stage, too! :-)
David Browne hi mate yeah I thought it was well overdue. Haha yes his voice is almost breaking at some points!
I cannot thank you enough for sharing this rare footage with us. This track is a favourite of mine so it was sad to learn above that this is the ONLY video footage which exists. Please if you can, if you have it, share the full version (from the beginning). Thanks.
IqbalHamid this is the only bit recorded that night. the beginning was missed (frustratingly for us!)
As far as I know Big Country as this format were only together a few months.
18 years. Lol
This is the Stuart, Bruce, Tony and Mark lineup. 🙂
@@BC1000Stars what I meant was this lineup was only together a few months and only had played a handful of gigs live. And by the way they were together 19 years not 18
Haha sorry pal, I understand what you mean now. 🙂
America never really got Big Country!🙄
why does it look like Stuart is playing in front of a green screen-lol......Mark's drum set seems to move in the camera while Stuart doesnt???????????????????
