This was one of the more terrifying movies I've ever seen... it helps if you understand it's an allegory for addiction. Like a self-made prison where others try to reach you, but can't, and you're tormented by your own demons.

The protagonist writes a book about it and finally checks the package containing his dictaphone. He plays the recording together with his wife and you can actually hear his daughter.

It’s weird that the director would think that. There was nothing ambiguous about King’s ending. Mike was totally out. He was deeply traumatized and dealing with long term health complications related to being burned but he was out.

In the end he's ghost is in the room, yeah, but then his daughter's voice calls to him then he answers and follows the voice OUT OF THE ROOM! the creepiest thing happened to me and my sister when watching this movie. We watched it the first time and loved the movie. In the end the Mike survives and we didn't think anything of it. Maby a year or two later, me and my sister decide to re-watch it. Then in the middle of the move we start talking about it, and i jokingly say "wouldn't it be scary if he died at the end this time". We both giggled at the idea. But i shit you not. THE. ENDING. CHANGED... We got to see this ending of the movie when we re-watched it. friking scariest moment of my life. Apparently they changed the ending from Mike dying to him surviving, so there are two versions of this movie lingering around. You never know which ending you will get!

The multiple endings was really a good idea for a horror movie I remember seeing this ending the first time and I watched it a second time just hoping it would end differently somehow but knowing it wouldn't, except it did and the second time I watched I got the good ending. It was crazy because here I am watching about a room that's messing with this guys mind and perception wishing it would end differently and then it actually does...really freakey.

If the manager really wanted nobody to enter the room anymore, why not just throw the key into the sea? ...or wall up the door? The manager was actually a creep who liked this all thing going on. How else could 56 people die there before?
Those deaths took place over the course of 100 years (give or take). Obviously he has not been managing the hotel that long. And since he doesn’t own it, if the key went missing, he’d probably get fired, a new key would be made, and everything continue but under the watch of someone who doesn’t understand the room.
