Dennis DeYoung (Formerly of Styx) "Meaning of Misanthrope" Official Commentary video. From the album "26 East, Vol. 2", available on CD/LP/Digital. Order HERE: orcd.co/ddyvol2 .
Do you like rockin' monks, space travel, time machines, mysterious orbs, dinosaurs, ancient ruins, three masters, strange sunglasses, beautiful sea sirens, howling wolves, fake lutes, screaming guitar solos, funky monks, (can you ever have too many monks) and hidden Styx stuff? Well so do I, too bad none of these things are in this video. MORE FAKE NEWS? NO I SWEAR THEY ARE ALL IN THIS VIDEO. If I’m lyin' I’m cryin'.
There’s a mysterious narrative unfolding in this six-minute opus with numerous musical and video twists and turns, harkening back to the great Equinox and Grand Illusion albums. Harken harken. Come watch and get the breakdown.

    LYRICS:
    LONG AGO IN ANCIENT TIMES
WE LEARNED OF LIFE FROM MINSTREL’S RHYMES
THEY TOLD US TALES OF GODS AND KINGS
AND TO BE BEWARE WHEN SIRENS SING
AND WHEN WE HEARD THE CLARION CALL
THE PEOPLE LAUGHED AND BUILT A WALL
HOW WE JOYFULLY REHEARSED THE TUNE
LIKE HOWLING WOLVES AT DEVILS MOON
WE’VE ALLL BEEN TAUGHT OUR LINES
SO RIGHTEOUS WITH OUR HOLY SIGNS
WE WERE DEAF TO THE LIES WE WERE BLIND AND UNKIND AND UNWISE
AND WILL WE EVER LEARN ALL EMPIRES BUILT WILL SOMEDAY BURN
WHEN THEY’VE LOST ALL CONCERN AND THEY FAIL JUST TO LISTEN AND LEARN
    NO MORE LIFE
    NO MORE AIR
LIKE A SHIP OF FOOLS ADRIFT ON THE MAL DE MARE
    NO MORE JOY
    NO MORE HOPE
STILL WE SEARCH FOR SIGNS OF TRUTH AS WE LEARN TO COPE.
LORD FOM THE ISLE OF THE MISANTHROPE
AND WILL WE EVER LEARN ALL EMPIRES BUILT WILL SOME DAY BURN
WHEN THEY’VE LOST ALL CONCERN AND THEY FAIL JUST TO LISTEN AND LEARN
    NO MORE LIFE
    NO MORE AIR
LIKE A SHIP OF FOOLS ADRIFT SUR LE MAL DE MARE
    NO MORE JOY
    NO MORE HOPE
STILL WE SEARCH FOR SIGNS OF TRUTH AS WE LEARN TO COPE.
LORD FOM THE ISLE OF THE MISANTHROPE
AND WHEN WE CROSSED THE BRIDGE OF SIGHS
WE BOWED AND SAID OUR LAST GOODBYES
THEN SET A COURSE FOR BETTER DAYS
THEN ONCE AGAIN WE SAILED AWAY.....

Love "Uncle Dennis Story Time". Seriously, this song and video is a blessing. An absolute return to form, creating a classic song that respectfully harkens back. It lifts my spirit and gives me hope that good things and sounds are not lost to history. Share this with younger music lovers. We never know where the next beloved artist will come from. Thank you to Dennis for taking time to provide this content and great music for us.

I'm 51, grew up in Louisville, Kentucky, USA... I recall hearing Styx when I was in 5th grade on the radio... I bought a new 45 record about every week with my allowance money, "Babe", "Best of Times", "Renegade"... all blasted out on my Mom & Dad's stereo system... (relatively speaking!). Then in Junior high, "Kilroy" came out... let's just say after 40 years, I am a die hard classic Styx and DDY fan... I'm digging the new music... and will be buying it! Thanks Mr. DeYoung for giving us one fabulous "Hurrah!" with you! God Bless.

I was born and raised in Michigan. Moved to Louisville in 2006. Turning 51 in September... My introduction to Styx was Kilroy Was Here, and obviously "Mr. Roboto." I fell in love with all of their music after that. DDY's solo albums always impressed me and his "new" band and latest album(s) are no exception, bringing back the fullness of time with honest Styx music again...with modern musical sensibilities. Styx went through a series of essentially horrible albums...until The Mission. I hope the latest offering doesn't disappoint. I know Dennis' Vol. 2 won't disappoint!

IF you were on Masked Singer, I would guess you on the first notes. After nearly 50 years listening to Styx and then your solo songs, I would recognize you no matter how you sang.
What separates you from most other singers and song writers is that you create a story with your music. Castle Walls, Come Sail Away, Grove of Eglantine, etc. Music with a story to tell. One song you wrote, High Crimes and Misdemeanors is timeless. What you wrote it about back then can be used this very day too.

Thank you, Dennis, for all you've done, Styx and the Solo work!:) I still remember finding Styx II in my Music Teacher room, and have him play Little Fugue in ' G'/Father O.S.A. in 1975, and that was/is my favorite song... Kudos to you! Semper Fidelis

I just had to reply to your comment, because coincidentally enough, that's where I first discovered the band as well. My music teacher brought it in to class when I was in grade school and I was fascinated with the cover. I was a fan from then on after hearing some of it. How wild that someone else has almost the same story!

      @johnroos5807 3 роки тому

@@DanOlivadoti I grew up in Crystal, MN, in 1975, I moved to Wadena. MN. It was then that the Music Teacher had Styx 2 in his classroom. At a 10 year old, Little Fugue in 'G'/Father O.S.A. just spoke to me, and it very much is my favorite song... The members of 'Styx' now, to me, are just a 'Tribute' Band, but that's only my opinion. Dennis is trying, to be sure, I hope that Tommy and J.Y. can bury the hatchet...

Very cool!! I thought that siren looked familiar 🙂 I notice something new every time I watch the video, and I learned cool new things from this "Making Of" video! I love how you wait to take off the blinding glasses until we're about to Sail Away from Misanthrope! Part of the symbolism of the island for me is being very narrow-minded and not opening your eyes to see other perspectives or deception or corruption, what have you. Like the Crystal Ball, music can be a great vehicle to expose all those things that keep us on the Isle of Misanthrope and stuck in Mal de Mer.
Like so many of your deep songs, I'll be continuing to unpack this song for a long time! Thank you so much for the amazing music!

Was just talking about how people think they know what they're talking about but have no clue... That howling wolf part you're referring to.... Love the "deaf to the lies" line.. I extended it by saying deaf to the lies and blind to the truth!!! I've always enjoyed Styx lyrics, they truly don't write like that anymore! The Grand Illusion album has always been my favorite personally... Another lyrically and musically great song from the 70s is Dust in the wind by Kansas. Idk why Styx got such a bad wrap? I personally love that time era of lyrics and music. Great song "D" thanks for all these years of incredible thought provoking lyrics and music... Much love!!!

I remember a Wooden Nickel album I just about wore out. One of my first concerts was Styx at the Pantages Theater in Hollywood, 6th row. The last concert I've seen was Dennis DeYoung at Oakland casino in Arkansas, great show. I went to school in Alaska with August Zadra. I'm a lifelong fan! Domo Arigato.

Quantum physics is why I'm studying electrical engineering instead. All that stuff hurts my head. And no expert is an expert. This was really fascinating to watch. I really appreciate that in every explanation video you do, you make it clear that everything is up to our personal interpretation, which I think is crucial to music and art in and of itself. I think so many people get on "my opinion is the right opinion on this piece of art," and unfortunately they'll always be wrong with that. It's nice to because it leaves a certain level of mystery. I love reading way to far into stuff like this, so I love the level of mystery you left around it. It's a very powerful song, and you and your team did a very excellent job on it. The themes of trickery, the fall of empires and the hope that we can pull ourselves out of the turmoil we threw/are throwing ourselves into is brilliant.

Hi Mr. De Young, thanks for that entertaining and informative walk-through of the video. In order not to alienate life long fans I can see why the heavier ideas like "dogma" or "the fiery orb?" are left open ended. Humanity is certainly in store for something "big" as we head further into the 21st century. However as a recently born again christian (at the of age 51 and a former "non-saved" catholic) I am compelled to proclaim truth (remember that thing Pontius Pilate was looking for) and the truth is the word of God both old and new which will culminate with the 2nd advent of the word made flesh and established on earth for 1,000 years. Hey you can say that's my truth and we all have our own but a day is coming when everyone will acknowledge one truth like it or not. Until then many deceptions will blind humanity and one is coming soon that would deceive the elect if that were possible. If you ask me I think that means the Aliens are coming. 👽 yikes! I'm praying I'll be snagged outta this world before then.

I don't listen to the current line up of what I call Stynx! Never did never will! You'll always be KILROY to me! But for the most part up until now, Domo Arigato Mr. Deyoung-o!

I love these breakdowns, thanks for doing this! Being born in the late 90's I've always wanted to talk with musicians from the Golden Age of music, and this is almost just as cool!
I thought the same thing when I heard the intro; it gave me Suite Madam Blue vibes. Beautiful, haunting arpeggios 👌🏻
I agree with what you said, Awesome music to back it up as well🔥
As much as I wanna say it was because of people eating things they weren't supposed to; something tells me it wasn't that. I love the Sail Away segment at the end ☀️

so, styx was the greatest art rock band ever, multiple albums that just kept coming, then DENNISgoes askew and can only write sappy love songs and show tunes, dennis want to go to broadway and neglects his position in styx, then to get out of touring he comes up with being LIGHT SENSETIVE, cant tour, wont tour, but the showtune projects continue and styx is left to flounder, they get sick of it and after a horrific experience with killroy they throw his ass out and eventually move on without him and go back to being the great band they once were. fast forward to now, dennis tries to prove that he is still the artist he once was by patching together what he thinks is as good as early stys stuff. go away dennis,.
