My first concert was Styx! The date was December 29, 1976. I was fifteen. The Kilroy concept was brilliant back in 1983, and even more so now, in 2022. I have no comprehension of those who take issue with it. In fact, I am embarrassed for them. Exceptional work, Dennis! I commend you.
Similar, but I was 14. I saw them in Austin, TX; where due to the curtain malfunctioning they had to play this film twice. DeYoung announced it, telling us about the curtain, then they played it again and the show began. Good times!
Or better yet, a dystopian sci-fi musical film. And it would be especially relevant today, since numerous groups of politicians and parents are trying to ban media (especially literature) that they find objectionable based on religious grounds. And many of those people are closely aligned ideologically-speaking to the villains of this short film, embracing fascism and theocracy, while stifling creativity and the freedom for people to choose what media they can consume. In many ways, Kilroy Was Here was ahead of its time. While parents and politicians had attempted to restrict the sale of rock albums to minors for decades, the freedoms that many of us have taken for granted for so long never really felt like they were going to be stripped away from us when this album came out in 1983. But here we are, forty years later, and we are on the verge of losing every freedom we have to these people. Thus, Kilroy Was Here--as an album, a short film, a tour, and a concept in general--is more relevant today than at any other point in its existence. Maybe if it came out today, it would be far more appreciated. Maybe if it became a movie, it would breathe new life into the album and what it represents: freedom from tyranny, no matter who is the tyrant.
Omg mine too. I remember going to Kmart and buying it. I couldn't wait to get home to listen to it. Styx is still one of my fav bands and I've seen them in concert more than any other band. I was also lucky enough to see Dennis DeYoung in concert once too. IDGAF what anyone says, this is perfect 80s music. My fav song on the album is Cold War..most never heard of it. I don't think they released it as a single.
To think a Band like Muse does this sort of production these days and it's popular, Dennis vision was so far ahead of its time. It's a shame a lot of Styx fans don't want more of this at the time, they just buy into the whole narative of just wanting the same ol same ol. I think Kilroy was Here was the coolest Styx album. I liked the direction of the band at that time, kind of like a hard rocking new wave sound.
Agree 100%. Dennis' vision wasn't only ahead of its time, pushing the envelope as far as rock concerts go- but how much more accurate could he have been some 39 years later ,regarding the censorship and tyranny that we are faced with today? Oh how we could use a Kilroy right about now!
People hate it, people love it.... personally, I liked it. I liked the music and that vocoder sound was always so amazing in songs. Not quite the voicebox like Frampton or Roger Troutman or Joe Walsh but still cool. I was a Styx fan from probably Crystal Ball album and I can say there are only a few songs I don't like by Styx. I won't mention them here but I thought this album was a good album. My fav is Pieces of Eight. It is nostalgic for me and I think that was really the peak of the Styx sound, imo. Grand Illusion is 2nd for me. Paradise Theatre 3rd. Equinox 4. Kilroy 5. Even though there are some cheezy parts to some Styx tunes and this video, I always loved the high falsetto vocal into the ear of one of the robotos and he shoves Dennis away b4 he can end the note properly. hehehe I just thought it was silly and a bit out of place so it was my kind of humor. Serious song and suddenly bam, another comedy. The knee to roboto's privates was oddly surreal.
I loved the Caught In The Act VHS back in the day and I did buy the DVD years later. I loved this mini movie and always hoped a full movie would eventually be released. I've always wondered if there was unused footage still in existence, I'm sure people would love to see it.
I was at one of the first "Kilroy Was Here" shows in Chicago. We sat in anticipation for a couple of hours as they struggled to get the audio/ video synced up (or something like that). The show was eventually postponed for a couple of days. As a diehard Dennis DeYoung fan, I gladly drove the 60 miles back to NW Indiana and returned for the show later in the week. . My most memorable concert experience ever! And being the standup guy that Dennis is- all ticket holders of the postponed show received a complimentary Styx album of their choice for the inconvenience. I still catch Dennis' shows when he is in the Chicagoland area and will for as long as he keeps that train a rollin'.

I still have this (including the whole concert) on dvd from when I bought it on the 1983 tour in Salt Lake City. I can't guarantee it still works, because I don't have a dvd player anymore, but I have it.
You are correct it would be VHS. DVD wasn't even produced until I think it was 1996. I also have the VHS, and also not sure if it still works. I also have somewhere the cassette which also came with a song called "music time" I'm not sure where that is either.@@catsarethebest36
Imagine a 12 year old boy growing up in Germany and hearing this song for the first time and later getting his hands on the album. In a world without the internet my imagination was running wild always hoping that there was a movie out there that simply didn't make it's way into Berlin's cinemas. Styx was my first concert in April 1983 as a little kid at the NY City Center and this coming on at the start was mind blowing at that age. Total surprise. I still remember the various moments in it when the crowd erupted into cheers, like when the Roboto is climbing the ladder and removes the mask to reveal it is DeYoung.
I liked it. Back in the 90's I took a Rock History class in college. Had to do a presentation about a favorite group. I chose Styx. I showed the first part of the video as part of the presentation.
I always thought this video and the whole concept of Kilroy Was Here and Mr Roboto in general was so far ahead of it's time. No none could appreciate it for it's truth back in the 80's, but it rings so true today. Substitute China for Japan. But basically we were warned about the whole technology thing. I really love the humor in the scene where Kilroy knees Roboto in his tech nards, and Roboto screams KAWASAKI!!!! Too funny. I was fortunate enough to be able to see the Kilroy Was Here concert in New Orleans two different nights when the recorded Caught in the Act. They played 5 nights and it was so great, my brother and I went back on Sunday night for the final show in New Orleans. This was probably the greatest rock show I have ever witnessed. Yeah, Kilroy subduing the Roboto still makes me laugh. Especially when Car and Motorcycle Manufacturers make up a portion of its cursing. "Owasa, Ka-wa-SAKI! Datsun, Nissan Sentra, scrotum patum! Oh, my bballlllsss!
As much as Everyone either likes or "hates" this album this was the beginning of the end for Styx as the band who dominated the late 70's and 80's. The principle parties of DeYoung, Shaw and Young would go on to have a never ending feud up to this day. Shaw and Young can say what they want about DeYoung but without him the band would never have been what they became and Shaw and Young to this day continue to sing DeYoung penned songs. Imagine that.
Dennis DeYoung was the heart and soul of Styx. Evan though Tommy Shaw had great songs himself he couldn't carry Styx to the popularity when Dennis was there. Yes, Tommy helped with that popularity but Dennis created it IMO. A pure genius. Desert Moon is still a favorite song to this day. Yes, I know it's from his solo career.
@@WilliamKThomas2566 I'm hoping you have Dennis' last 2 albums, 26 East (Volumes 1 & 2) which are excellent albums and sound more like Styx than Styx does on their last 2 releases. Without Dennis Styx wouldn't have gotten to where they got. Ultimately a team effort, but without that founding member you would have to wonder if Styx would have gotten anywhere. Really tired of hearing all the ridicule directed at Dennis especially from JY and Tommy. It's not fair at all and they know it. How many songs of Dennis are they playing right now in Concert? That should speak volumes right there. And I always love their comments saying they're a rock band and tired of Dennis' ballads. Yes, Dennis wrote some ballads but look again JY & Tommy on how many rockers Dennis wrote.
W. L. S. is what made Styx the band of today. The D. J. ‘s name escapes me, but it was W. L. S. playing “Lady” every hour that made styx a hit band. Tommy said at the end of Styx, ‘I just can’t write any more songs about robots. Amen to that.
@@daneyesropen2898 Shaw wrote 3 songs on the album. It was a concept album so what he expect? It wasn't like Dennis was asking him to write another 10 songs about robots for their next album. They can have sour grapes and all over Dennis 's concept but the 2 singles were #3 & #6, the album was #3 on the Charts and has sold over 1,000,000 copies. I'm sure Tommy wasn't complaining about the money made from this album. But of course, now he wants to bash Dennis DeYoung for it. And yes, the Radio Station did propel Styx because of them playing 'Lady'. Right place, right time I guess.

I report a few pertinent facts about the beginning & the end of Styx. Tommy offered up the statement about writing songs with robots as the focus. Why would Tommy say that? Maybe Dennis did ask for more robot songs, you can’t know that unless you were in the room. Dennis has gone on with his music & using Styx’s music (the songs he owns). His diatribe between songs is most unappealing, using a large portions of profanity. It is unnecessary & rude. For me Dennis has become a bafoon. Looking at the act Dennis puts on, I understand why Young & Shaw sued to save Styx. Ya can’t argue success, Young & Shaw have kept the band relevant. Dennis is still pissy about Styx being ‘stolen’ from him. There were several names the record co. offered the band to use. ‘They’ voted Styx. A mythical river. At any rate, you have much more information on Styx than the average bear. We agree, Styx is still drawing crowds some 45 yrs hence. Who woulda thought.
That's Brilliant Dennis. I bought this on VHS back in the day when it came out. Later I bought a copy on dvd. I remember it saying buy this now before it's banned. Awesome!

If you may have heard everybody tried to post the Kilroy was here movie intro for years and years on UA-cam, and they would get copyright strikes for posting it on UA-cam. And of course the movie intro would be deleted by UA-cam. But because you were heavily involved and it was your creation since the early 1980s, because you wrote the concept and the story of Kilroy was here for the Styx album itself. You also have the idea to do a live stage show during the tour, with a movie opening for the show. As well as putting a little Broadway with the addition of a typical rock concert all together. Dennis just to let you know, in the next year of 1984. Michael Jackson and the Jacksons went out on tour in the theme of their victory album, and Michael Jackson doing live performances of his songs from his off The Wall album and thriller album during the shows. Which all together became the victory tour, that everybody from the 1980s will always remember. Especially the fans of Michael Jackson and the Jackson Brothers. During that time of 1984 and from the Jackson's victory tour, if you may remember yourself. After when Styx broke up from 1983, because Tommy Shaw left the band first. In the next year of 1984 when Michael Jackson and his brothers got back together, and did the Jacksons victory tour. If you remember from that time, during the victory tour the shows would open up with a some kind of science fiction Broadway act on stage. It would later transition to the first song that Michael Jackson and the Jackson brothers performed on stage which everybody remembers, the song want to be starting something by Michael Jackson from the thriller album. Then later at some point almost at the end of the shows of the victory tour, there was another science fiction Broadway magician act that happened. After when they performed the song by Michael Jackson called you got me working Day and night, the Broadway science fiction magician act had Michael Jackson to disappear. And later on it transitioned to the song beat it by Michael Jackson. I do hope you remember this from 1984 during the Jacksons victory tour, the year after when Styx broke up ? Because like what I just explained about how all of the concerts and the shows were done during the victory tour from 1984, the year prior of 1983. When you and styx were doing the Kilroy was here tour, you had the same idea by putting a few Broadway Acts during the shows. With the addition of a movie opening intro, and of course having Rock concert performances to be in mix with all of that. Even though those ideas that were thought of by you were way ahead of its time back in 1983, in the next year another group would do the same thing. And of course that would be none other than Michael Jackson and the Jackson brothers, after the success of Michael Jackson's thriller album and the Jackson's victory album and it all became the Jacksons victory tour during that time of 1984. The production values are really impressive for the time. This still looks (and of course sounds) really good. This was one of the first pieces of art that made me realize things that make you think and question are often originally done to also be entertaining and popular. There is something about the narrative and the music that just started me thinking more critically. Thanks to Kilroy, I was able to appreciate a lot of music and literature and art on way more levels. I think if I hadn't heard and seen this, I would have a diminished appreciation for Homer, Sophocles, Shakespeare, Twain, and a ton of other classics.
It’s such a shame that Tommy and JY didn’t share your vision of the future of Styx. What you gave us was amazing, but one can’t help wonder what more the five of you could have created. But, like Lennon & McCartney, all things must pass I suppose. Thanks for sharing this with us.

This was awesome. Thank you, Dennis. I never got to see you perform live as I was too young and brought up a little to sheltered for my parents to let me go to any concerts but I had all your albums and knew every word to every song. Don't Wait for Heroes was my battle cry when I was nearly 400 pounds and listening to that song every time I needed motivation got my ass up off the sofa and working out. I lost 210 pounds with the motivation that song gave me. I'm now 56 and at 180 and healthy! This vid brought back so many great memories!
This is better than most movies today, it's an actuall story and the quality give me the good old Terminator vibe. 10/10 rating, was ahead of this time.
Dennis…thank you very much for putting the short film up on UA-cam. I have been telling people for years there was a Mr. Roboto/Kilroy short film. I have often been told I had no clue what I was talking about, that I must have imagined it, etc. I have searched for it on the internet, UA-cam, etc. many times in the past and basically gave up. I finally came across this tonight and I can’t wait to now be able to prove to several people that I was right all along. Long live STYX!

I've been a fan since "Kilroy" came out... the summer I turned 16. And today (05/12/2022) is the first time I'm seeing this the whole way through. I've seen snippets for years, but never in entirety. Thank you, Dennis, for making it available.
I was immediately hooked on this intelligent rock orchestration the first time I heard it in 1983. My intrigue about the story and concept likely increased my intelligence at a young age. I have the original 1983 A&M cassette, which contains its jacket with all album lyrics, story, and concept printed in neat small type. It's kept in a wood crate/cassette holder stamped with the "Licorice Pizza" logo. Side note: I'm usually more attentive, but after visiting this video post multiple times over the past year, I realized it was posted by Dennis DeYoung. Enamoured and flabbergasted.
This was done in the Sanger Theatre in New Orleans, the city of my birth. my friends swear to me that I'm in this concert. I didn't get a chance to see this. I did see Styx in 1997 during the Grand Illusions tour and Dennis DeYoung solo. Gowan is great but Dennis to me will always be the voice of Styx
@@kilroy107 I think the combination of DDY and Tommy Shaw and a little JY is the sound of Styx. I went to school in the 70's at Eielson AFB Alaska, about 5 years ago I found out a school friend from Eielson was the guitarist and singer for the DDY band, I was shocked. August Zadra is his name, we called him Gus in school. That's was pretty cool. I saw DDY in Hot Springs AR about years ago and Gus was awesome.
I've been a fan of Styx the single from the Grand Illusion came out. It was this home video of Styx than made me go from a casual Styx fan, to a huge Styx fan. Awesome concert tour, and entertaining film. Had they never made it, who knows?
Epic AF!!!!!! If this act was transported from 1982 to now it would blow even more minds. Too great. Not to say it wasn’t liked back then but I think there’s more of an appreciation for those sci fi rock theatrics now. I always think of the Kilroy Was Here project partly as a case of “you guys don’t get it yet but your kids are gonna love it”.

When i first got this tape, from the images i thought "there must be a movie or something to go with this". I didn't know enough about Styx to know what was going on, but I'm glad to finally see this! Childhood achievement unlocked!
That was my first Styx concert. Some balked at it, but Dennis DeYoung was a visionary and could clearly see the direction that video was going to be integrated into music. Thanks for the trip down memory lane. A fan for life!!!
I've never seen this short film ever, yet I've been a huge fan since I was 6. I've always loved this song. I used to have the album but it got lost as I grew up, and our family moved overseas.
"Domo arigato misuta Robotto" is one of the most unique lyrics of any top rock song in history. The song Mr. Roboto is also a highly unique rock song. By itself this is reason enough for Styx to be in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame
I saw this same show in Jacksonville Florida I guess in 1983, I remember thinking how it was one of the best rock shows I had ever seen. My friends and I couldn't quit talking about it. By 83 I had been to a whole lot of concerts, including Styx several times prior, so my judgment wasn't based on a limited perspective. I still think it was genius. I saw Styx last Friday at the Amp in St Augustine, it was absolutely amazing. It was sold out and the crowd (including me) was on their feet cheering the entire show. Those boys really have their act together ❤️...

In the early 80's, there was a premium movie channel here in Atlantic Canada called The Star Channel. Between the movies, they'd show trailers, much videos and short films. They would air this all the time. It really bugged me that they'd fade it out just as Mr. Roboto was starting though, as it looked like the film was leading into the Mr. Roboto music video. It was MANY years later that I got ahold of a "Caught In The Act" VHS with the live version of the song, but I still suspect that somewhere, there is a version where the short film leads into the music video.
Dennis holding the mask is reminiscent of Hamlet holding the skull. Very cool. I'd love to see a full length feature film remake done today using the original recordings as the soundtrack.
I bought this album the day it arrived in my local music store. Today is the first time I've seen the intro film. "Ya mutha was a Toyotah!" Worth 40 years? Oh, yes. Worth 40 years.

I've known this song for years and kinda liked it but recently it's grown on me to the point of bordering obsession. It hits me differently. I think it's brilliant the way that it combines the elements of rock, sci-fi, and story telling that is on par with folk. Future folk? No - that's been used. This song was way ahead of its time. I think with sci-fi and 80's nostalgia so big right now a reboot of the video would be well received and open it up to a new audience. I could see it as anime or maybe CGI. Very cool.
Saw you guys at the Brendan Byrne Arena in East Rutherford, NJ back in 1983 during the Kilroy Was Here tour. Also saw you at Convention Hall in Asbury Park in 1978.
This song was ahead of it’s time. There’s always something now that offends someone that wasn’t an issue back then. You can’t say this…you can’t do that… and now rock and roll is offensive to people who use to listen to it themselves.
At 59 years old I've loved Styx music since I was 11. The only name I knew as a kid was Dennis DeYoung because almost every song was written by him. In listening to the interviews, James Young allowed himself to be introduced as a founding member. Styx was Tradewinds then TW4 when he was hired. He was a member when the band changed its name to Styx, but he was not a founding member.
Kill Roy was here was my best Styx album every song on the album was a hit in my opinion it was my first styx album that album was a big part of my 80s thank you Dennis god bless you 😂❤🎶✌️

When I was 7 or 8 I’d listen to the album and stare at the album cover, my imagination running wild. I wanted so badly to see the film, but was never really sure if it was actually a real thing or if it were just pictures. Now I’ve finally seen it. I feel better

Years of searching on UA-cam for a fan upload proved fruitless, and now it is finally here, on your official channel. Watching the video that ties in to what is probably my most favorite Styx song ever since I was a baby (I am now 30 as of last month) brings some closure to me. I'm sorry but I have to speak frankly about how I feel about this. If I was ready for a concert and this came on I would never go back. This is a grandstanding Dennis Deyoung. He thought he was and still thinks he was Styx. I'm not denying he was a fantastic artist but you don't make a decision on what the band does when it's not unanimous. This is a Dennis Deyoung show and I would be angry too.

And as a bit of a movie nerd, I feel that the story in this short film has potential to be fleshed out further into a feature film or even a TV series. The story within is especially relevant today, when governments around the world, even here in the United States, are making a concerted effort to legislatively ban material (mainly books) that they ideologically disagree with, some citing their faith as the driving factor in their legislating. It may be books today, but tomorrow, it's going to be music, just like it was in this short film. People think it won't happen, but we all said the same thing about books; yet here we are. That's why the message and themes in this short film are so important: they are basically speaking truth to power, and calling out those who are either using the levers of government to ban material they don't like, or those who stand idly by and do nothing to stop those who are.
@@catherineferguson7646 And for the record, I have heard recently that most of the band had voted to let Dennis back into the band, but Tommy Shaw was the lone holdout; and with him being the current leader, the motion to let Dennis back in was basically shelved. So it says to me that it wasn't so much creative differences in their music, as Tommy and J.Y. claimed, especially if you listen to both Styx's and Dennis' recent music (both sound very similar to me). I think it was something a bit more deeper and personal than they're all willing to let on to the fans, especially since Dennis hadn't spoken with any of them after he was ousted. Even the members of The Beatles stayed in touch after they broke up. Of course, the future is unpredictable, so maybe Tommy will change his mind, or the rest of the band could try to overrule him, assuming that what I head was correct. Time will tell.
Amazing. I grew up listening to this album on LP and Always wondered what all the images on the LP sleeve was from. As a kid it looked like a movie and I really wanted to see it. Now at 46 I finally get to see what it is and im so happy.
My first concert was Styx! The date was December 29, 1976. I was fifteen. The Kilroy concept was brilliant back in 1983, and even more so now, in 2022. I have no comprehension of those who take issue with it. In fact, I am embarrassed for them. Exceptional work, Dennis! I commend you.

Similar, but I was 14. I saw them in Austin, TX; where due to the curtain malfunctioning they had to play this film twice. DeYoung announced it, telling us about the curtain, then they played it again and the show began.

Frankly, I think Kilroy Was Here, if fleshed out to full length with every song, would be an awesome Broadway musical.
I've always thought so too.
Or better yet, a dystopian sci-fi musical film. And it would be especially relevant today, since numerous groups of politicians and parents are trying to ban media (especially literature) that they find objectionable based on religious grounds. And many of those people are closely aligned ideologically-speaking to the villains of this short film, embracing fascism and theocracy, while stifling creativity and the freedom for people to choose what media they can consume.
In many ways, Kilroy Was Here was ahead of its time. While parents and politicians had attempted to restrict the sale of rock albums to minors for decades, the freedoms that many of us have taken for granted for so long never really felt like they were going to be stripped away from us when this album came out in 1983. But here we are, forty years later, and we are on the verge of losing every freedom we have to these people.
Thus, Kilroy Was Here--as an album, a short film, a tour, and a concept in general--is more relevant today than at any other point in its existence. Maybe if it came out today, it would be far more appreciated. Maybe if it became a movie, it would breathe new life into the album and what it represents: freedom from tyranny, no matter who is the tyrant.

Omg mine too. I remember going to Kmart and buying it. I couldn't wait to get home to listen to it. Styx is still one of my fav bands and I've seen them in concert more than any other band. I was also lucky enough to see Dennis DeYoung in concert once too. IDGAF what anyone says, this is perfect 80s music. My fav song on the album is Cold War..most never heard of it. I don't think they released it as a single.
To think a Band like Muse does this sort of production these days and it's popular, Dennis vision was so far ahead of its time. It's a shame a lot of Styx fans don't want more of this at the time, they just buy into the whole narative of just wanting the same ol same ol. I think Kilroy was Here was the coolest Styx album. I liked the direction of the band at that time, kind of like a hard rocking new wave sound.
Agree 100%. Dennis' vision wasn't only ahead of its time, pushing the envelope as far as rock concerts go- but how much more accurate could he have been some 39 years later ,regarding the censorship and tyranny that we are faced with today? Oh how we could use a Kilroy right about now!

People hate it, people love it.... personally, I liked it. I liked the music and that vocoder sound was always so amazing in songs. Not quite the voicebox like Frampton or Roger Troutman or Joe Walsh but still cool. I was a Styx fan from probably Crystal Ball album and I can say there are only a few songs I don't like by Styx. I won't mention them here but I thought this album was a good album. My fav is Pieces of Eight. It is nostalgic for me and I think that was really the peak of the Styx sound, imo. Grand Illusion is 2nd for me. Paradise Theatre 3rd. Equinox 4. Kilroy 5. Even though there are some cheezy parts to some Styx tunes and this video, I always loved the high falsetto vocal into the ear of one of the robotos and he shoves Dennis away b4 he can end the note properly. hehehe I just thought it was silly and a bit out of place so it was my kind of humor. Serious song and suddenly bam, another comedy. The knee to roboto's privates was oddly surreal.

I loved the Caught In The Act VHS back in the day and I did buy the DVD years later. I loved this mini movie and always hoped a full movie would eventually be released. I've always wondered if there was unused footage still in existence, I'm sure people would love to see it.
I was at one of the first "Kilroy Was Here" shows in Chicago. We sat in anticipation for a couple of hours as they struggled to get the audio/ video synced up (or something like that). The show was eventually postponed for a couple of days. As a diehard Dennis DeYoung fan, I gladly drove the 60 miles back to NW Indiana and returned for the show later in the week. . My most memorable concert experience ever! And being the standup guy that Dennis is- all ticket holders of the postponed show received a complimentary Styx album of their choice for the inconvenience. I still catch Dennis' shows when he is in the Chicagoland area and will for as long as he keeps that train a rollin'.

I still have this (including the whole concert) on dvd from when I bought it on the 1983 tour in Salt Lake City. I can't guarantee it still works, because I don't have a dvd player anymore, but I have it.

In a world without the internet my imagination was running wild always hoping that there was a movie out there that simply didn't make it's way into Berlin's cinemas. Styx was my first concert in April 1983 as a little kid at the NY City Center and this coming on at the start was mind blowing at that age. Total surprise. I still remember the various moments in it when the crowd erupted into cheers, like when the Roboto is climbing the ladder and removes the mask to reveal it is DeYoung.

I liked it. Back in the 90's I took a Rock History class in college. Had to do a presentation about a favorite group. I chose Styx. I showed the first part of the video as part of the presentation.

I always thought this video and the whole concept of Kilroy Was Here and Mr Roboto in general was so far ahead of it's time. No none could appreciate it for it's truth back in the 80's, but it rings so true today. Substitute China for Japan. But basically we were warned about the whole technology thing. I really love the humor in the scene where Kilroy knees Roboto in his tech nards, and Roboto screams KAWASAKI!!!! Too funny. I was fortunate enough to be able to see the Kilroy Was Here concert in New Orleans two different nights when the recorded Caught in the Act. They played 5 nights and it was so great, my brother and I went back on Sunday night for the final show in New Orleans. This was probably the greatest rock show I have ever witnessed. And I've been to a lot. DWFH

As much as Everyone either likes or "hates" this album this was the beginning of the end for Styx as the band who dominated the late 70's and 80's. The principle parties of DeYoung, Shaw and Young would go on to have a never ending feud up to this day. Shaw and Young can say what they want about DeYoung but without him the band would never have been what they became and Shaw and Young to this day continue to sing DeYoung penned songs. Imagine that.
Dennis DeYoung was the heart and soul of Styx. Evan though Tommy Shaw had great songs himself he couldn't carry Styx to the popularity when Dennis was there. Yes, Tommy helped with that popularity but Dennis created it IMO. A pure genius. Desert Moon is still a favorite song to this day. Yes, I know it's from his solo career.
@@WilliamKThomas2566 I'm hoping you have Dennis' last 2 albums, 26 East (Volumes 1 & 2) which are excellent albums and sound more like Styx than Styx does on their last 2 releases. Without Dennis Styx wouldn't have gotten to where they got. Ultimately a team effort, but without that founding member you would have to wonder if Styx would have gotten anywhere. Really tired of hearing all the ridicule directed at Dennis especially from JY and Tommy. It's not fair at all and they know it. How many songs of Dennis are they playing right now in Concert? That should speak volumes right there. And I always love their comments saying they're a rock band and tired of Dennis' ballads. Yes, Dennis wrote some ballads but look again JY & Tommy on how many rockers Dennis wrote.
W. L. S. is what made Styx the band of today. The D. J. ‘s name escapes me, but it was W. L. S. playing “Lady” every hour that made styx a hit band. Tommy said at the end of Styx, ‘I just can’t write any more songs about robots. Amen to that.
@@daneyesropen2898 Shaw wrote 3 songs on the album. It was a concept album so what he expect? It wasn't like Dennis was asking him to write another 10 songs about robots for their next album. They can have sour grapes and all over Dennis 's concept but the 2 singles were #3 & #6, the album was #3 on the Charts and has sold over 1,000,000 copies. I'm sure Tommy wasn't complaining about the money made from this album. But of course, now he wants to bash Dennis DeYoung for it. And yes, the Radio Station did propel Styx because of them playing 'Lady'. Right place, right time I guess.

If you may have heard everybody tried to post the Kilroy was here movie intro for years and years on UA-cam, and they would get copyright strikes for posting it on UA-cam. And of course the movie intro would be deleted by UA-cam.
But because you were heavily involved and it was your creation since the early 1980s, because you wrote the concept and the story of Kilroy was here for the Styx album itself. You also have the idea to do a live stage show during the tour, with a movie opening for the show. As well as putting a little Broadway with the addition of a typical rock concert all together.
Dennis just to let you know, in the next year of 1984. Michael Jackson and the Jacksons went out on tour in the theme of their victory album, and Michael Jackson doing live performances of his songs from his off The Wall album and thriller album during the shows. Which all together became the victory tour, that everybody from the 1980s will always remember. Especially the fans of Michael Jackson and the Jackson Brothers.
During that time of 1984 and from the Jackson's victory tour, if you may remember yourself. After when Styx broke up from 1983, because Tommy Shaw left the band first. In the next year of 1984 when Michael Jackson and his brothers got back together, and did the Jacksons victory tour. If you remember from that time, during the victory tour the shows would open up with a some kind of science fiction Broadway act on stage. It would later transition to the first song that Michael Jackson and the Jackson brothers performed on stage which everybody remembers, the song want to be starting something by Michael Jackson from the thriller album. Then later at some point almost at the end of the shows of the victory tour, there was another science fiction Broadway magician act that happened. After when they performed the song by Michael Jackson called you got me working Day and night, the Broadway science fiction magician act had Michael Jackson to disappear. And later on it transitioned to the song beat it by Michael Jackson. I do hope you remember this from 1984 during the Jacksons victory tour, the year after when Styx broke up ?
Because like what I just explained about how all of the concerts and the shows were done during the victory tour from 1984, the year prior of 1983. When you and styx were doing the Kilroy was here tour, you had the same idea by putting a few Broadway Acts during the shows. With the addition of a movie opening intro, and of course having Rock concert performances to be in mix with all of that. Even though those ideas that were thought of by you were way ahead of its time back in 1983, in the next year another group would do the same thing. And of course that would be none other than Michael Jackson and the Jackson brothers, after the success of Michael Jackson's thriller album and the Jackson's victory album and it all became the Jacksons victory tour during that time of 1984.

The production values are really impressive for the time. This still looks (and of course sounds) really good.
This was one of the first pieces of art that made me realize things that make you think and question are often originally done to also be entertaining and popular. There is something about the narrative and the music that just started me thinking more critically.
Thanks to Kilroy, I was able to appreciate a lot of music and literature and art on way more levels. I think if I hadn't heard and seen this, I would have a diminished appreciation for Homer, Sophocles, Shakespeare, Twain, and a ton of other classics.

This was awesome. Thank you, Dennis. I never got to see you perform live as I was too young and brought up a little to sheltered for my parents to let me go to any concerts but I had all your albums and knew every word to every song. Don't Wait for Heroes was my battle cry when I was nearly 400 pounds and listening to that song every time I needed motivation got my ass up off the sofa and working out. I lost 210 pounds with the motivation that song gave me. I'm now 56 and at 180 and healthy! This vid brought back so many great memories!

This is better than most movies today, it's an actuall story and the quality give me the good old Terminator vibe. 10/10 rating, was ahead of this time.

Dennis…thank you very much for putting the short film up on UA-cam. I have been telling people for years there was a Mr. Roboto/Kilroy short film. I have often been told I had no clue what I was talking about, that I must have imagined it, etc. I have searched for it on the internet, UA-cam, etc. many times in the past and basically gave up. I finally came across this tonight and I can’t wait to now be able to prove to several people that I was right all along.

I've been a fan since "Kilroy" came out... the summer I turned 16. And today (05/12/2022) is the first time I'm seeing this the whole way through. I've seen snippets for years, but never in entirety.

I was immediately hooked on this intelligent rock orchestration the first time I heard it in 1983.
My intrigue about the story and concept likely increased my intelligence at a young age.
I have the original 1983 A&M cassette, which contains its jacket with all album lyrics, story, and concept printed in neat small type. It's kept in a wood crate/cassette holder stamped with the "Licorice Pizza" logo.
Side note: I'm usually more attentive, but after visiting this video post multiple times over the past year, I realized it was posted by Dennis DeYoung. Enamoured and flabbergasted.

I saw this concert at the Pantages Theater in 1983. I was 20. One of the best concerts I've ever seen. I liked the concept. 👏👏👏👏👍
This was done in the Sanger Theatre in New Orleans, the city of my birth. my friends swear to me that I'm in this concert. I didn't get a chance to see this. I did see Styx in 1997 during the Grand Illusions tour and Dennis DeYoung solo. Gowan is great but Dennis to me will always be the voice of Styx
@@kilroy107 I think the combination of DDY and Tommy Shaw and a little JY is the sound of Styx. I went to school in the 70's at Eielson AFB Alaska, about 5 years ago I found out a school friend from Eielson was the guitarist and singer for the DDY band, I was shocked. August Zadra is his name, we called him Gus in school. That's was pretty cool. I saw DDY in Hot Springs AR about years ago and Gus was awesome.
I've been a fan of Styx the single from the Grand Illusion came out.
It was this home video of Styx than made me go from a casual Styx fan, to a huge Styx fan. Awesome concert tour, and entertaining film. Had they never made it, who knows?

Epic AF!!!!!! If this act was transported from 1982 to now it would blow even more minds. Too great. Not to say it wasn’t liked back then but I think there’s more of an appreciation for those sci fi rock theatrics now. I always think of the Kilroy Was Here project partly as a case of “you guys don’t get it yet but your kids are gonna love it”.

That was my first Styx concert. Some balked at it, but Dennis DeYoung was a visionary and could clearly see the direction that video was going to be integrated into music. Thanks for the trip down memory lane. A fan for life!!!
I've never seen this short film ever, yet I've been a huge fan since I was 6. I've always loved this song. I used to have the album but it got lost as I grew up, and our family moved overseas.

"Domo arigato misuta Robotto" is one of the most unique lyrics of any top rock song in history. The song Mr. Roboto is also a highly unique rock song. By itself this is reason enough for Styx to be in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame
I saw this same show in Jacksonville Florida I guess in 1983, I remember thinking how it was one of the best rock shows I had ever seen. My friends and I couldn't quit talking about it. By 83 I had been to a whole lot of concerts, including Styx several times prior, so my judgment wasn't based on a limited perspective. I still think it was genius.
I saw Styx last Friday at the Amp in St Augustine, it was absolutely amazing. It was sold out and the crowd (including me) was on their feet cheering the entire show. Those boys really have their act together ❤️...

In the early 80's, there was a premium movie channel here in Atlantic Canada called The Star Channel. Between the movies, they'd show trailers, much videos and short films. They would air this all the time. It really bugged me that they'd fade it out just as Mr. Roboto was starting though, as it looked like the film was leading into the Mr. Roboto music video. It was MANY years later that I got ahold of a "Caught In The Act" VHS with the live version of the song, but I still suspect that somewhere, there is a version where the short film leads into the music video.

Dennis holding the mask is reminiscent of Hamlet holding the skull. Very cool. I'd love to see a full length feature film remake done today using the original recordings as the soundtrack.
I bought this album the day it arrived in my local music store. Today is the first time I've seen the intro film. "Ya mutha was a Toyotah!" Worth 40 years? Oh, yes. Worth 40 years.

I've known this song for years and kinda liked it but recently it's grown on me to the point of bordering obsession. It hits me differently. I think it's brilliant the way that it combines the elements of rock, sci-fi, and story telling that is on par with folk. Future folk? No - that's been used. This song was way ahead of its time. I think with sci-fi and 80's nostalgia so big right now a reboot of the video would be well received and open it up to a new audience. I could see it as anime or maybe CGI. Very cool.

Saw you guys at the Brendan Byrne Arena in East Rutherford, NJ back in 1983 during the Kilroy Was Here tour. Also saw you at Convention Hall in Asbury Park in 1978.
I'd long forgotten about the cameo by Mike Demone. That was a refreshing triggered memory.
I wonder if Tommy and JY think about this album differently after doing their own concept album (The Mission) in 2017.
Considering they’re arrogant enough to think they can continue as the same band without him, they probably think their concept is better.
I was there, in 1983. It was groundbreaking and fantastic. We made history.
This song was ahead of it’s time. There’s always something now that offends someone that wasn’t an issue back then. You can’t say this…you can’t do that… and now rock and roll is offensive to people who use to listen to it themselves.
At 59 years old I've loved Styx music
since I was 11. The only name I knew as a kid was Dennis DeYoung because almost every song was written by him. In listening to the interviews, James Young allowed himself to be introduced as a founding member. Styx was Tradewinds then TW4 when he was hired. He was a member when the band changed its name to Styx, but he was not a founding member.
My first rock concert. Had to to wait to be rescheduled though after Tommy came back from his ‘injury’.

When I was 7 or 8 I’d listen to the album and stare at the album cover, my imagination running wild. I wanted so badly to see the film, but was never really sure if it was actually a real thing or if it were just pictures. Now I’ve finally seen it. I feel better

I was thirteen when I saw this, still have the vhs! It made a huge impact on me then. I still feel this was the best thing they did!
I had no idea this existed until I saw your interview with Professor of Rock. I think I was 10 when I first heard Mr. Roboto. This gives it so much more context! Thanks for sharing this with us, Dennis!

Dennis, I don't know if you will ever see this comment, but you have no idea how many years I have been waiting to finally see this short film. Years of searching on UA-cam for a fan upload proved fruitless, and now it is finally here, on your official channel. Watching the video that ties in to what is probably my most favorite Styx song ever since I was a baby (I am now 30 as of last month) brings some closure to me. From the very bottom of my heart, domo arigato, Mr. Roboto, for uploading this video. Rock on forevermore.
I'm sorry but I have to speak frankly about how I feel about this. If I was ready for a concert and this came on I would never go back. This is a grandstanding Dennis Deyoung. He thought he was and still thinks he was Styx. I'm not denying he was a fantastic artist but you don't make a decision on what the band does when it's not unanimous. This is a Dennis Deyoung show and I would be angry too.
@@catherineferguson7646 To each their own, of course. But it is an interesting piece of Styx history, which is why I wanted to see it.
And as a bit of a movie nerd, I feel that the story in this short film has potential to be fleshed out further into a feature film or even a TV series.
The story within is especially relevant today, when governments around the world, even here in the United States, are making a concerted effort to legislatively ban material (mainly books) that they ideologically disagree with, some citing their faith as the driving factor in their legislating.
It may be books today, but tomorrow, it's going to be music, just like it was in this short film. People think it won't happen, but we all said the same thing about books; yet here we are.
That's why the message and themes in this short film are so important: they are basically speaking truth to power, and calling out those who are either using the levers of government to ban material they don't like, or those who stand idly by and do nothing to stop those who are.
@@catherineferguson7646 And for the record, I have heard recently that most of the band had voted to let Dennis back into the band, but Tommy Shaw was the lone holdout; and with him being the current leader, the motion to let Dennis back in was basically shelved.
So it says to me that it wasn't so much creative differences in their music, as Tommy and J.Y. claimed, especially if you listen to both Styx's and Dennis' recent music (both sound very similar to me).
I think it was something a bit more deeper and personal than they're all willing to let on to the fans, especially since Dennis hadn't spoken with any of them after he was ousted. Even the members of The Beatles stayed in touch after they broke up.
Of course, the future is unpredictable, so maybe Tommy will change his mind, or the rest of the band could try to overrule him, assuming that what I head was correct. Time will tell.

Amazing. I grew up listening to this album on LP and Always wondered what all the images on the LP sleeve was from. As a kid it looked like a movie and I really wanted to see it. Now at 46 I finally get to see what it is and im so happy.
