Totally agree with your view on both albums as they are both excellent, both channel classic Styx but both remain rooted in the here and now.
As a Styx fan the last few years have been great with Styx's Mission and now Crash of the Crown and the two Dennis 26 East vols 1 & 2. My preferences are for Crash of the Crown over The MIssion and Vol 2 over vol 1. And I am thinking about trying to piece together a Brave New World type abum by cerating a playlist of my favourites from each and sequencing them as though they were a 1970's Styx album. My main complaint about Crash of the Crown is that they should have extended some of the songs and should have closed the album out with To Those; I dont really have any complaints with Dennis' album though,and while some people baulk at his softer tunes, I no longer do - I once did but the older I get the more I've come to appreciate them.
My favourite Styx albums are Grand Illusion and Pieces and Eight, I used to dismiss Cornerstone but have come to like it a lot more than when I first heard it - and Kilroy isnt anywhere near as poor as I used to think back in the day.
I just listed to Kilroy again for a few spins and It's just such a good record for what it is, instead of being a bad record for what it is not.... if that makes sense. Songs like "Cold War", "Heavy Metal Poisoning" and "Just Get Through This Night" are great deeper cuts.... Cornerstone is my least favorite of the classic records, but it does have fine moments well. As do ALL the Styx albums!
@@vinyljunkierecordshop1214 I like that way of looking at Kilroy which I think is a great way to also view other less revered albums - good for what they are, not bad for what they arent - Queen's Hot Space immediately came to mind.
As a former worker at the Roanoke civic center. Kilroy was the most entertaining concert I ever got to witness. The sold out crowd was all entertained that night. DDY is the voice of STYX. The band today is a cover act. I have always been a JY fan..
I think it's who misses who more? It's obvious to 90% of the fans would say Tommy and J.Y. miss Dennis more. Also the fact that after they pushed Dennis out they had a13 year absence of making new material. So Dennis had more good ideas for songs.
How many hits have they had since firing Dennis? Hum Tommy and JY..I saw you guys around the world. You owe the fans the real Styx. Gowan does not have to leave the band.

Interesting video. Not a current Styx fan, but definitely was in their heyday. I've watched a lot of interviews with DeYoung (he'll talk to anybody), and I am much more sympathetic to his point of view on reuniting. I am going to try out the new records from each and hope for the best.
I agree--I knew Dennis would deliver after the stellar Volume 1. But I was pleasantly surprised to find out I liked Crash of the Crown equally as much (overall I think it's better than The Mission, which had a great second half but the first half was lackluster). Who would have thought that in summer 2021 we would have two fantastic "Styx" albums to listen to?
Boy oh boy- do I agree 100%with your comments concerning both albums. I especially caught your comments about JY- I have seen some new videos and am concerned as well. I believe his wife has been sick for awhile, which may explain his lack of involvement.
If you go back to interviews with JY between the covers album and The Mission, it seems like he isn't interested in writing new Styx music. So, he lets Tommy and Wil write the stuff.

I watched an interview with Dennis recently and he said "Styx was/is not a prog rock band". They are an American rock band with some prog elements but mostly melodic rock. What made them great were the songs and two excellent singers.
Tommy could hit the high notes in Babe. The reason he got the gig with Styx in the first place. Now it's his band? I won't travel to Danville to see them anymore. They can't fill up enough seats to play in Roanoke. With Dennis the dynamics change.
I do agree with Dennis on one point. He said in an interview about 10 years ago, STYX albums usually contained one hard, heavy rocker from JY, a couple of hard rockers from Tommy and some acoustic stuff, and some Adult Contemporary from Dennis, which all fit on the album nicely. I think that's a good equation. Listening to STYX now, aside from Cyclorama, all their songs kind of sound the same. That's boring. What I like about STYX with Dennis (and the stuff from Cyclorama) is it WAS all kind of different. This kind of goes back to what I see the problem with Tommy and by example the Girls with Guns album -- good songs, but they all kind of sound the same; same drums, same guitar, same bass, same same same. I like Tommy, but he's only good for about 2-3 songs on an album, not ten.
I think you nailed it. Tommy & JY just cannot hold down a full album. Bye the way, JY being the big "rocker," his solo album " Raised by Wolves," was weak and forgettable.
Not my favorite album by them but tracks 5,6, and 13 are definitely the best 3 tracks
Dennis DeYoung new one ☝️ is fantastic and New Styx is ok 👌.
Crash of the crowns and the mission are awesome albums. Quite honestly pretty unbelievable how good. Tommy voice has aged so well. Love DDY and I am true styx fan i love all it all but honestly DDY new albums are good and a great way to end his recording career but for me not as good as the new Styx albums.
I LOVE THE MISSION!! And the new one COTC also. Personally I think 2 of their best musically. And no DDY. I know he and JY started it all but I think Styx is doing just fine the way they are.
Fine? Styx deserves more than fine bring back deyoung they belong together.

@@markhaus2830 You said "fine" not me. 'If they belonged together they would be together" Didn't they belong together in 1996 and 97 on tour then in 98 when they were recording an album? Then deyoung gets sick and they suddenly don't belong together.
What, fine doing the fair circuits and for like the last two decades. Yeah, fine. LOL.
@@Vvykk~ At least Styx is still out there touring. And not at fairs either. Can't say the same about Dennis. And for the record, DDY had done his share of small neighborhood fairs. As he played the fair in my area back in 2011...
I think that Tommy didn't want Styx to be a Soft Rock band. To me, Styx is their own version of Prog Rock, and the last two albums show that. In interviews, JY has said that Styx is Prog Rock. I did initially think that the songs on Crash Of The Crown were too short. To me, they pack a lot into those short songs. The album seems to take smaller songs to construct one epic type piece. My favorite classic Styx albums are from Equinox to Pieces Of Eight.
Tommy always said he was afraid Styx was getting "soft" but ironically, the songs he composed from both "Paradise Theater" and "Kilroy Was Here" were mostly lighter pop songs. I think "Renegade" was the last true hard rock song Tommy wrote for the band. I to love both Equinox and Pieces of Eight. I miss the days of the ferociousness of tunes like "Great White Hope", "Queen Of Spades" and "Midnight Ride."
@@vinyljunkierecordshop1214 Well, it would have been odd for Tommy to be writing more rockier songs when he has always been the melodic guy. Dennis recently did an interview with a channel called Sea Of Tranquility, and he said that he didn't think that Styx was Prog Rock. So, he started writing stuff like Babe. I think that Tommy was just going along with that. JY was the more Metal guy, and even he wrote more melodic stuff like Eddie. Haven't We Been Here Before is a downer song. So, maybe Dennis writing the Kilroy story put Tommy in that mood
Tommy Shaw was a folk rocker. Renegade was a folk song but Dennis helped turn it into a rocker. Songs like Foolin Yourself, Sing For The Day, Boat On The River, ect. were not straight up rockers.
@@JIF882 J I know for you Tommy can do know wrong. You love him. That does not mean you need to twist yourself into pretzels trying to denigrate Deyoung. Tommy's top 2 youtube songs are Boat On the River which you only know because Deyoung said it must be on Cornerstone against the wishes of Young and their manager and Count on You which is number 1 most viewed and by any of your definitions is a sappy love song without guitars. HWBHB was the first song written for Kilroy before there was a concept and Deyoung had nothing to do with it. And once again Deyoung turned Renegade an acoustic three part harmony CSN tune into a rocker. In that interview Deyoung said they were a fake prog band and so much more but essentially an American rock band. Shaw was lucky when he joined a band already with a successful musical identity.
He made them but Deyoung was the mastermind.

I agree with your comments about J.Y. i saw them on july the 4rth... N J.Y. seemed old n seemed to have no stage enjoyment to his performance...i loved styx crash of the crown...although im not a big gowan fan... N i thought dennis deyoungs album was really good but with maybe one or two too many ballads .... I doubt if the albums couldve mixed together well. Deyoungs album sounds more like a throw back to the grand illusion...while styx sounded more like a continuation of the mission...kind of like early " starcastle" rock band style
I have been a fan since 1976. A big styx fan. Lots of shows, etc. Cornerstone was the beginning of the end. Dennis started writing songs for 14 year old girls during Cornerstone. Loved Paradise. Almost cried when Kilroy came out. I love the band without Dennis. His arrogance is just astounding. Not sure if I'll buy his new one. Probably not....
Kilroy was 1 of the most entertaining concerts I have ever seen. I used to work at a civic center. I have seen thousands of concerts. Kilroy was way ahead of it's time for 1984. 4DP records and Kilroy went platinum. Still no mention in the HOF. Dennis has replaced JY and Tommy. I can't say the same for them. Styx owes all the fans who bought all those records a reunion tour with Dennis back with Styx. Lawrence can still play keys. Dennis the voice of STYX..Always will be.

Exactly. I read an interview on how Dennis purposely changed sound engineers for "Cornerstone" to accommodate his personal writing style.
DDy's vocals aren't what they use to be. Even though I did like the music for "Isle Of Misanthrope". DeYoung's aging voice ruined the song. The rest of his album was nothing to write home about. Same old boring stuff he always does. I wouldn't waste my money on it...
I just followed Styx at the beginning with the name are tw4. Styx group when Tommy is added to the band until Mr. Roboto are the best Styx version ever. Of course Mr. Sucherman are the best assets added to the band.
I like the current Styx band but I love Dennis especially with his corny jokes. I think Dennis's band should be called Styx Alpha.
I think the new PseudoStyx is okay. That is what I call the Styx lineup without Dennis. What I don't like about what Tommy and JY did is write Dennis out of their history. It was very malicious and downright wrong. They don't seem to care to fix it. If Dennis died, they might fix it to save face. Dennis did nothing to deserve this treatment.
Haven't listened to Dennis' new one yet. Just listened to Styx and the title track is really the only keeper. The songwriting, underneath all the progressive trappings, is quite mediocre.
Exactly. Ten Tommy Shaw songs aren't decent enough for an album. At least throw out some more Gowan, JY stuff to mix it up.
@@Poochpatrol It seems to be getting all good reviews. I am going to listen to it again. Whether it's from Dennis or Styx, I try to stay neutral and look at the music. Could any of these songs hold their own on Styx's greatest hits 1 or 2 or the anthology? Except for maybe the title track, I say no.
After listening to COTC a number of times I must say it’s really very good and gets better with every listen.
@@Poochpatrol The JY, the better! Gowan sings a few and I like when he and Tommy alternate on the vocals. Shaw still has a great voice and really hasn't lost much over the years. Same with DeYoung as he still sounds good. JY never did sound good.

Styx will probably never be inducted into the RRHOF as they're talented, not rap or hip hop or inane pop.
unfortunately, this is true. Still no Thin Lizzy nor Iron Maiden either... so the RRHOF sucks.
I’ve seen the current incarnation of Styx. They’re ok. Good at what they do.
Then I’ve seen Dennis DY’s band. With a symphony orchestra.
It’s not close folks. Dennis and his band smokes this “new Styx” all day long.
Rightfully, this lineup of Styx should be called “Styx playing the music of Dennis DeYoung”. Because that’s what it is. He wrote 90+% of their material. Good material anyhow.
The only thing this Styx lineup has as “better than the original” is the Todd Sucherman aspect. Master drummer.
I heard Shaw say in concert that JY was “The Godfather of Styx”. Please. 🙄.
This situation is a mirror image of Grand Funk RR. The main guy, who put them in the map, isn’t there.
They’re both cover bands. Doing the music of their heydays.
No DeYoung, no Styx. No Farner, no Funk.
It is what it is.
With respect, Phil - there are a limited number of years left that all of these guys can make music. The current incarnation of Styx does play the hits, it's true. They always have - including the Edge of the Century tour as well as their awesome comeback in '96.
That said, I appreciate what I believe is your sentiment - that's it's not Styx without Dennis. It would be very easy to dismiss that with "it's been 20 years, get over it", but I am also disappointed they can't be together. It has not prejudiced me against what came later. I and many, many others believe these musicians have made some great stuff over the later arc of their careers - Dennis with his solo albums and musical, and Styx with Cyclorama, The Mission(on the Billboard charts for weeks and enthusiastically reviewed ), and Crash of the Crown(1st #1 on Billboard since Paradise Theater).
I have seen both lineups and both put on professional, spot-on shows; please present a review from any time before the pandemic that inferred or directly stated that either lineup was "off". Don't take it from me or a reviewer though - ask anyone who has gone to one of the 75 - 120 shows a year they have played since 2001.
Finally, someone with your interest knows JY is a founding member, thus the moniker "Godfather of Styx".
Styx was never a "hard rock" band. Although they have a few harder edged songs by Tommy and JY.
Styx was more progressive back before Dennis purposely changed their sound in 1979.
DeYoung's latest solo albums don't do anything for me overall. "Isle Of Misanthrope" music is good. But the rest of his album sounds like the typical adult contemporary songs he's been famous for.
As for JY, his wife was dying, which is why he missed concerts...

Dennis lost me when he whined about Tommy making fun of "Babe" on stage when he was playing with Damn Yankees. Really, Dennis? You're that arrogant and thin skinned? Babe, and for that matter everything Styx did with you in the band was above and beyond ridicule? Get over yourself, dude. I thought Steve Perry was bad..
What was the point of ridiculing Babe in damn Yankees? It should be beyond ridicule from the guy who played the guitar solo and took royalties. Has Deyoung ridiculed and Tommy songs?
@@pepperdog2039 Oh b-o-o freaking h-o-o. So by making fun of a song he played on, Tommy was making fun of himself, not just Dennis, and that's not OK? I liked Styx, and I liked some of the tunes that Dennis wrote. But nothing should be above ridicule.

@@pepperdog2039 The "point," such as it was, was that it was a joke. And yes, it was largely at DeYoung's expense. And yes, I thought it was freaking funny. The fact that DeYoung got his feelings hurt was on him, not Tommy.
Tommy insulted him! Dennis did a lot for Tommy. He brought him into the band. When Tommy had a cash flow problem, Dennis who had other projects going put Styx together for a reunion. I think what Tommy did was childish.
In my opinion, Dennis is the true voice of Styx. His last two LP's could have been sandwiched between Cornerstone and Killroy Was Here and would have sold millions during that time. Styx without Dennis sound pretty ordinary.
