  • The new season of Umbrella Academy is out! And I have many many thoughts about it. I enjoyed bingeing the first season when it came out, but does the second season really live up to the height of the first installment...?

    • @joshhill212
      @joshhill212 3 роки тому +50

No offense to Dazzreviews, but this video was awful! There's a clear explanation as to why Ben is walking slow up the hallway as Vanya's powers are affecting him & the fact that he has a fear of the light (Ben's Fear Of Going Into The Light Is Hinted At Earlier In The Season, & Outright Addmited By Vanya To Klaus In The Car After Ben Died).
Somehow Dazzreviews didn't understand Diego was manipulating the bullets being shot at him when he did the flip in the opening apocalypse scene. Dazzreviews also criticizes the Handler's army for not just immediately shooting despite the fact that if the majority of them starting shooting in a big crowd they would just kill the people in front of them (Their Own People & Not Their Targets).
Yet eventually when the Handler's army does start shooting (Can Take Clear Shots), Dazzreviews criticizes them for conveniently not actually hitting Number 5 or Diego. Despite acknowledging just a few moments later that Diego has the power to manipulate projectiles (Including The Bullets).
Most every "issue" Dazzreviews had for this season was easily explainable if you were even remotely paying attention to what you are watching, Which makes sense because Dazzreviews said he got so bored watching it sometimes he just skipped parts of it. This leads me to believe that he must have skipped important parts.
Dazzreviews also makes the argument that it's unbelievable that nobody recognized the family on the drive to the farm after they became fugitives, But think about it. Do you look into people's vehicles when they drive by & actively scan (Or Notice) their face, or even pay attention to what they look like. Honestly It's pretty easy to be wanted by the police & to drive around freely without anybody noticing you. It's not as if any of the family got out of the car on the way to the country farm to interact with other people, they drove straight to our country farm (In The Middle Of Nowhere).
Keep in mind this is the 1960's before any kind of cell phones. This means in most scenarios even if somebody recognized the family of fugitives they would have to go home to their phone before they could call the police, or in the fastest case scenario they would have to look around looking for a pay phone. In the amount of time it would take for the police to finally arrive the family would be long gone.
The only thing I agree with is that I think the farting was a little bit of just a dumb gag, When your show revolves around time travel you are bound to have the same people from different times interact with one another & I don't want this dumb fart joke forced in every time. Though that's just a personal opinion of mine.
What Dazzreviews is attempting to do is criticize what he believes to be objective problems with the plot, characters, etc... & honestly it's just cringe to listen to how abysmally misinformed Dazzreviews is about most aspects of the show. Maybe the show just isn't for Dazzreviews & he doesn't understand it very well. If this is the case I would hope that he can just come to admit that as the truth rather than trying to claim that the show has problems & that it is the show which is in the wrong (& Not Himself).
This video was so bad & hard to sit through, I almost feel bad that I watched it gave it a dislike & a negative comment, because although it deserves the dislike & it deserves the negative comment it does not deserve the positive impact me doing those things do which is propping it up by the algorithm.

joshhill212 wow that was intense, I get what you’re saying but I don’t agree with one of your points. I watched season 2 with my dad (who was alive when Kennedy was assassinated) and when we saw the scene where they left in the car he IMMEDIATELY went “yeah that wouldn’t happen. You could barely move in Dallas right after the assassination.” Tbh it makes sense, after such a massive presidential assassination there’s gotta be police and secret service crawling the city and stopping anyone who looks remotely suspicious

    • @joshhill212
      @joshhill212 3 роки тому +14

@@marys4038 That's a fair reply, although I would also argue that Dallas is a pretty big place & it would take cops a lot of time to start setting up barricades/stops all around the city (Outside Of The Area Where JFK Was Shot). Also we don't know how exactly everything played out after JFK's death in this alternate timeline. Although let's play with the hypothetical that Dazzreviews or your dad is right on that issue, It's irrelevant to the story. Let's say the family did run into some cops on the way to the country farm. Well they all have super powers, for example they have Allison who could just rumor their way through any police interaction with ease.
So for all we know they were stopped by the police, but were simply allowed to keep going. So whether or not they were discovered by any police off screen on the way to the farm is irrelevant as it would not be an obstacle for them to get to their destination.
Dazzreview's criticism here really reminds me of a Cinemasins sin where Jeremy just sins something he doesn't see happen on screen which is irrelevant & would have zero impact to the story anyway other than padding out the runtime.
If a run in with the cops where nothing happens is what Dazzreviews wants to see it would be massively hypocritical that he would complain about scenes dragging or bad pacing & then advocate for the very same thing he is complaining about.

I enjoyed Allison's story the most (I love Ray) and I liked how Vanya lost her memories so she could see her siblings from a new perspective. I liked Five as much as ever and still enjoyed Klaus and Ben's dynamic. I thought that Diego was dumb for thinking that JFK being alive wouldn't have royally messed up the timeline, and I thought that Luther's story was lacking. Klaus' story was funny but still emotional, and I enjoyed it. Ben's death was sad but I think it was fitting.

That’s Diego’s real big flaw. He’s a character so obsessed with doing the right thing that he doesn’t consider what impact that will have on things. His belief that JFK’s assassination is the cause of the new apocalypse is just an excuse for him to try to stop it.

The thing that confused me was that Klaus's powers were just...forgotten? His whole arc in the first season was that he abused drugs/alcohol because the constant presence of ghosts was so traumatic to him. Yet in the second season, he's sober for most of the season, and he sees only like, Ben, and one ghost in the beginning?? That was such a big and sympathetic part of his character (and the reason he's my favourite), so to have it just forgotten about was really baffling

In defense of the hallway scene at the FBI headquarters, it showed them all working together, maybe even with the intent to get Ben to Vanya. The hose had to be released so Klaus could then open the door for Ben. It seems like Ben is unable to go through solid objects (for some reason) and the power radiating from Vanya appeared to affect him, I don't think the slow walk was purely for drama sake. Klaus also was weakened so he couldn't make Ben corporeal at any point to do this stuff.

Seconded, Klaus' arc felt lacking, especially when most of the others had enjoyable plot lines. Still, I suppose that's what happens when you're trying to focus on seven main protagonists, with many antagonists and supporting players thrown in as well. While the climatic battle WAS enjoyable, it couldn't top that exhilarating opening scene we were teased with.😔

Agreed, I absolutely love Klaus' character and he's one of my favourite characters by far, but I really hate how they completely screwed up his potential so far.
I know he's supposed to be a super fun character and he is, but he also has really strong and useful powers that he never really gets to show off and there's so many emotional moments and trauma that he goes through that just completely get brushed off or worse, they are treated as comic relief moments instead, like his addiction, him seeing ghosts, Ben and Dave's deaths and Vietnam in general, the abuse he went through as a child, having been killed multiple times now (even as a child on purpose, which is so much worse), being possessed and losing all control over his own body and having to watch your back as you sleep, never being taken seriously and always being disregarded and dismissed instead, etc.
I really hope they fix that in season 4, as it is the last season.

I think its ok that some characters, don't live up to their full potential. But it makes it harder to believe because they don't have a explanation for why Allison can't just fix Klaus's drinking problems. Why no one seems to be looking for Vanya/ protecting her after she caused the apocalypse(and the drama that would go around that) or why Klaus feels so uncomfortable telling his siblings about Ben. It just feels like there are some scenes missing, which takes away from the experience but doesn't by any means ruin it.

During Klaus' heavy drinking problem years, Allison wanted to abandon the whole rumour thing and actually give effort. She eventually gave that thought up for the better. Klaus going back drinking around her by then wasn't really that heavy as it used to, she saw that he wanted a drink so that's that. For the Viktor thing, remember that everyone was scattered between 1960 and 1963, pretty sure they were all looking for each other especially for the first arrivals. Realizing that they're alone, they started living a new life and gave up. Viktor arrived second to last with amnesia, there's no way his siblings would have realized. As for the Ben thing, honestly I am kind of annoyed that when his siblings are looking for him, Klaus just kinda pushes him away.

Klaus believes he talked Ben out of his chance to go to heaven and feels guilty about it. That's why Ben later confessed that he had been afraid to go and stayed by his own choice. Allison's "Rumors"are always short term, Addiction is a long term problem, and people don't like being forced to change. Her interference would likely have made it worse even if he hadn't really started AFTER the family went their separate ways. As far as them not "looking" for Vanya. They had no knowledge she had arrived yet. 5 knew because he saw ALL of his siblings in the battle scene before Hazel came in to let him know the score.

I will never forgive that they had Alison, someone who really wanted everyone to be their best self, enabled Klaus's relapse and thereafter everyone acting like his addiction was no biggie considering all the shit they gave him for it in season 1. The one and only thing I appreciate this season v.s. 1 pertaining to Klaus was him interacting with more of his siblings because in season 1 there's a sort of air that they're really sad to see him throwing his life to drugs, but they did love him and enjoy his presence as kids (excluding Luther, ew, and Five). Anyways, I loved Klaus deeply and I understand and appreciate they tried to expand on some others stories, but they completely glossed over his PTSD, anxieties, and general manner. In a way, that made his comedy less appealing because it was now his entire, dulled-down character.

i literally *ADORE* this show, but when I first watched it, something just felt like, off.
I feel like they didn’t get as much screen time all together like how they did in s1, and we didn’t really get to see all of their personalities and morals and stuff clash as much. ( for example season 1 had countless family meetings )
Another thing is that I feel like S1 was a lot better since everything was so unexpected ( especially if you hadn’t read the comics before ) and in s2, since we got used to everything, it just wasn’t as like, weird or whatever as it was in the 1st season.
Another thing that I *really* missed was Klaus and Diego’s relationship. In the last season Diego treated all of his sibling like trash, except Klaus. Like they seemed to genuinely care about one another and I feel like in s2 all that development was just thrown away. ( speaking of development getting thrown away don’t even get me started on Klaus. I LITERALLY LOVE HIM BUT LIKE HE WAS JUST OFF THIS SEASON IN A WAY, but that’s a story for another day )
And then lastly, Hazel and Cha Cha. They were actually like able and funny villains. Like you actually got to know and connect with them, unlike the Swedes. They had a fun dynamic and were always getting outsmarted by the Hargreeves which is what made it fun to see what they would do whenever they came on screen because it was so unpredictable.

He says about how he was expecting them to all be children in this newest season when I thought it was very clear that it was just a visual representation of the last time they worked together as a team and now they are finally together as a family. He says he was expecting Ben to integrated into the team and dissapoint dthat he was still a ghost which I think is kinda understating what Ben actually did at the end of season 1. The reveal wasn't that he was gunna be part of the team but that in a life threatening situation Klaus was able to summon him physically into the world and he could touch things. He says "diego flipping faster than the speed of bullets" that isn't what he is doing at all and obviously doesn't understand diego powers. Luther throwing his fight was great and definitly logical, the delay of Allison not using her powers wasn't "convenient padding" her whole arc in season 1 was she didn't want to use her powers ever again because she was made to use them on her sister and lost her husband and child because of them. Five is suspicious of Lila well before the reveal that she is the handlers daughter. Old five definitly does act like five. "the show became too complex" no it wasn't. The scene of Allison, diego and Klaus was amazing. The slow build is because we lose a character we love at the end of it "it's not even because he's hesitant of the pain or anything, he's just being dramatic!" he knows what he has to do will kill him and he doesn't want to die. My main issue with this review is a lot of his issues seem to be that "the show didn't do what I wanted it to do so therfore it's bad"

The biggest problem I had with this season was how it felt like it was spinning his wheels most of the time, and most of the characters' sub-plots were entirely irrelevant, amounted to nothing, or put people back to where they were at the start or end of season 1; accomplishing nothing. Klaus and Luther also largely did nothing the entire season, while Vanya only really does anything at the very end to serve as a Deus Ex Machina. They should have seriously downgraded her powers as a result of her earlier near-death or something so that she can actually be useful without being OP. Typical problem of writers writing themselves into a corner. It was still enjoyable, but the writing was a LOT less tight this time around than the first season. Given the further departure from the source material, I fear this trend may continue into season 3...

There are a couple of things you failed to mention in this video that are contradictions or shall I say inconsistencies in Netflix's Umbrella Academy. The first one was when Ben entered Vanya's mind in episode 9 of season 2, he told her that he died "17 years ago". In the beginning of the next episode, we found out that Ben died in 2006 which according to this show's timeline is "13 years ago". The second one happened right at the first episode of season 1, when we saw a big statue of what seems to be a full-grown adult version of Ben in the academy's yard (that was knocked over by Luther when he fought Diego after a heated argument). We all saw what Ben was like when Klaus first conjured him up in the initial minutes of episode 10 season 2. He was still a young teenager. How were they able to know what Ben would look like as an adult when they constructed the statue in the yard? I can even add and ask the question "do ghosts grow older?" In reference to an adult Ben interacting with both Klaus and Vanya. Just some things to ponder on I guess.

@Bigglesworth Red Nice. I may have overlooked that point. But still it does not explain why an older Ben is shown interacting with Klaus and Vanya and not a younger teenage version of him. Another point is that in Ben's funeral scene, they sure don't look like 16/17 year olds. They look a lot younger. Hence, my assumption that it may not have been 2006 at all but earlier.

Manipulate bullets? What lol? He can manipulate (already moving?) metal with his mind on the show. That’s his power. What did you think he was like Hawk Eye? Lol he’s not just super good at throwing knives... he’s controlling where they go with his mind. Obviously controlling tons of bullets or dodging them would be more difficult, hence his power not getting to that stronger level until he’s with all his siblings. He’s got a Magneto-esque thing going on.
“That was over quick”... about Vanya taking over the entire army of people. What did you want a gun fight? Lol Vanya wiping them out was LITERALLY the point lol... so they would have us going, “Huh? How is it over?” and thinking that even if Lyla and her mom survived, they would be no match for the siblings... the climax and big reveal was Lyla having powers lol. That was the whole thing....
The only part I agreed w you was the scene before the Vanya/Ben scene. It was frustratingly slow. I guess once I saw the beautiful scene after, it made sense like maybe they were trying to build up to it, but it was more frustrating than anything. Overall, I thought it was WAY better than season one. Season one I actually had to play a few times before I actually got into it and got through it. This was so much more quickly paced to me, aside from bits in the very middle... but usually the side stories were entertaining enough that it didn’t matter to me.
Anyway, I enjoyed hearing your opinion.

The thing most people focus on when it comes to this show is how entertaining it is, and you made it obvious that you cared a lot about how much each character was shown and how the plot of season two is very similar to season 1, and although I respect your opinion, the reason this is one of my favorite shows of all time is how accurate is it. Time travel is a very complicated thing to pull off in shows and movies, and it ends up with lots of things that most people find repetitive, boring, and unoriginal. This show did a very good job of staying mostly accurate to the basic laws of time travel while at the same time trying as hard as it could to lessen the boring things about it, and I really like how they did it. I relate to how this show feels like the people working on it didn’t try that hard, because I’m working on a book series myself, and it has a ton of time travel in it. I’ve discovered so much stuff researching time travel and wrapping my mind around alternate realities and multiversal wars, and this show really inspired me to learn more. I always loved the concept of time travel, and this show opened up a whole new world for me when I first watched it 2 years ago, and it’s also the same reason I love what Marvel is doing in the MCU with all the time stuff. Both of these shows are incredible, but i think it’s best to understand that it’s harder to make a good show on a low budget about a complicated boring plot with people having really high standards with Marvel. I’m sorry if I sound like some random guy hating on you, because I’m not trying to spread hate. I’ve been watching you for quite some time and enjoy your videos, although the fact that you mostly focused on the bad things about season 2 without doing much research just kind of ticked me off.

    Vanya’s mind palace😂. Great Sherlock reference😄
Honestly I could have done w/ vanya’s love story line. I too loved the Swedes not speaking gimmick. At first I didn’t though. I really thought younger klouse was spot on. I too found it annoying of them getting shot at with dozens of bullets and not getting hit once. I didn’t understand why five didn’t raise care more about Lila time jumping while they were fighting. That’s when he should’ve figured she was special. But noooo it took til the las episode. Oh well. I did enjoy her character

Sissy is going to jail for killing her husband. I like how they sweep that under the rug like nobody is going to ask questions.
