Does it matter the orientation of the flywheel when you put it back on? I had to move the main stud the flywheel attaches to cause the magnets would not fit over the flywheel.
Just bought a boat with a Johnson 15 79 motor on it what would be the best way to test the motor and how to start it for the first time thank you in advance
When reinstallation the coils, make it is aligned to the boss (with straight edge or feel with your thumb nail) before tightening the screws. The flywheel may rub against the coils while spinning and causes damage.
@@jakeguitar01 see your ground strap that you had on the bottom bolt of the bottom coil? Yeah move that to one of the bolts that the coil has a metal tab on. It will still work the way you done it as the body itself is a ground.. but it means in certain circumstances if a coil goes and decides to short for a while, the other coil will survive. Basically the way yours is wired it will tend to blow both coils maybe 20% of the time should one go bad. Like I said though it will still work fine as long as the coils are not on the way out. That motor original came with two circular type coils but they are obsolete now for that size so where you used to have ground wires coming out each coil you now just have a metal tab over one of the coil holes. Yeah 100% move your earth strap to one of them mate and you will have protection.
@@jakeguitar01 I can do you a vid if u want to show the 100% correct way for the coils to be set up. Yours just needs the strap moved as I said. The main reason a lot of them are done like this is when people had to convert to the square type coil over the original circular type, when they replaced them they just stuck the earth on the most convenient bolt as they figured the motor body was the same thing, it technically is but as we are dealing with magic pixies here we know it travels a certain way to earth so effectively all you are doing is making it safe for the other coil should one go bang in a certain fashion. I've even seen ones that had one old circular type coil and the newer type like on yours and you must put the ground strap on the metal tabbed hole of the coil or they get issues at high rpm for some reason beyond my knowledge. It's a common mistake as originally the earth strap was connected to the top bolt of the top coil but because both coils had individual earth leads coming out it never mattered, now they don't it does.
I replaced the coil bc I wasnt getting spark. Still no spark with new coil. Tried my plugs from last season, and now I have spark, so it appears I jumped the shark and didnt need the coil after all. Now it sputters like it wants to start, but wont . It has spark at the plugs and I only replaced the coil under the flywheel. Any ideas what could be causing this? Does the flywheel have to be installed a certain orientation or just line it up with the tab on the drive shaft?
Great video fellers!! I have what I think is 87/88?? J15rlcud. On my driftboat for the rivers. I see that you have quite a spark after repair. I don’t think mine is that hot. Think I need to change power pack?? Thank you Lew
Can you send me some pics of the ignition coil i replaced mine and didn’t note what washer went where. I’m having trouble with the middle bolt with the two coils stacked in that configuration I don’t see how the ground strap is getting grounded. Your help would be greatly appreciated
My CD2U has matching wires. Both brown with yellow stripes. They are not color coded like the charge coil. How do you know which ones to plug together? Does it truly matter?
Exactly! I have the same problem. The CD2U pack both wires are brown with yellow stripe, wher the new charge coil -one solid brown, one brown with a yellow stripe. Which goea where?

Where is the parts listing and where did they come from
Awesome video I was looking for this do you have the part number for both parts I ha a 40hp only 2 spark plugs
How do you add a regulator rectifier to a 15HP 1989 OMC motor?

Thanks for the Tip!
Hey no worries.
It's a pretty straightforward video, Good job.
How did it run so far?
@@peteryeung111 So Far so good. Running like new!

Did you have an issue with the arieltek, Amazon power pack? I installed mine and it started up but killed now I have no spark again
Hello I had a 84 15hp. Is there a certain position for ignition plate. Thanks

@@nitebyfly7325 I just took a chance and plugged it in and it works fine. Not sure if I got lucky or it doesn’t matter. Ha
Make sure your kill circuit is functioning properly before doing all this. Needs open circuit to run.
You both part numbers
25hp
Way to fast for someone who has not done this work before, too bad
The way you tighten that module was horrific. You always skip one. Oof
How do you test these items with a multimeter?
