    See other reviews for this knife......nobody else has had these issues with it.I own one and it's a bulletproof piece of work for under 40$ on Amazon.Do REASEARCH ON IT GUYS...THIS GUY WAS NOT EVEN CUTTING THE PAPER RIGHT.Bad review is all I gotta say...oh ....and it WAS sharp right out of the box

    Schrade is by far the cheaper of the bunch. Now if I can just get an edge on it, it might outshine because of price for value. Stay tuned. I'm gonna get this thing sharpened. I'll be showing it then. Thanks for watching

    I've had my SCHF9 for over a year. It has been a Beast, a workhorse. As a survival knife, I'm not concerned about weight, sheath, or ergonomics. It fits great in my hand, and I have beat it to death since I've had it. It does everything an axe can do. I have a "backpacking" axe that weighs less than this knife.
    Think of the term "Survival" for a second. This knife will accomplish almost every task there is to survive. If you need something finer, go for an $8 Mora. It'll be super sharp, handle the "touchie" tasks, and be sharp enough to shave with if you so desire.
    If you need something to replace your axe, hack down a tree/limb, or baton, this is your animal. It's heavy for a reason. It's a work knife. Don't complain about: "It's too big for my hand". Get a different knife then. It's perfect in my hand. Again: Think Survival...
    If you had to cut off tree limbs, this will do the job. Don't be a wuss and bitch about it. Use it for what it's worth, a kick-ass beast of a knife that'll do most any chore/task, and at a more than reasonable price.

    I have to agree with most of the other posters - these are great bushcraft/survival/work knives for the money. I'm not a knifespurt, but I liked it so much I bought a second one as a gift. No complaints.

    Nice review thank you. Its good to hear other opinions. Like you say a lot of people love the knife. This really helps with making your mind up on if to buy or not. If a knife is heavy you need that weight to work for you.

    I say you need to practice your batoning technique. And actually learn to sharpen a knife. I have 2 and have not had ANY problems what so ever!
    p.s. in your video you compare the batoning of hard wood for the schrade and soft pine for the kershaw. not exactly a fair comparison.

    • @0innerself0
      @0innerself0 8 років тому +1

      +Jerry Morris Nothing much to add. Maybe that the Kershaw is way bigger, more of a hatchett, so there's no point in comparing them. Not a really objective review.

    Excellent video. Very well produced. Your logic is excellent and the proof you provide well done. I liked it. I will have to say that I disagreed with one point that you made. I have a 9 and I have no problem batoning with it at all. The weight placement is actually an asset. It provides a better fulcrum with your arm. I would have no trouble taking mine out alone into the bush at any time and feel completely safe.

    Friend I can shave hair with my Schf9 ! No it didn't come that way but I have never bought a knife that was up to my standard of being as sharp as I like or the edge able isn't to my liking! I can split wood or feather stick and still shave! Sorry to hear you feel like you didn't get your $40.00 worth! John

    I just got my SCHF9 about a week ago and I really love it. The handle fits my hand like it was made for it! The other knives you showed on your video all have the same problems (for my use) they have what I call "stick handles". (I looked at the SOG Force) I've been looking for a large knife that has contoured handle for better grip and stability and the SCHF9 has it. My knife came out of the box very sharp, When it came I went out and cut down trees as large as my wrist. Thick hi-carbon steel blade, great handle, nice heft for swinging and under $50.00. Love it!

    I have the SCHF9 and have made some modifications to the handle scales to suit my personal tastes, additionally I have removed the finish on the spine and filed smooth a 90 degree angle for the fire steel and flint. After using the SCHF9 I find it can perform camp tasks well and personally like the confidence of a heavier constructed blade. Having a mechanical failure of your knife in a survival situation can be deadly. Given the price point you get alot of knife for the money. The important thing to remember in the hands of a skilled craftsman this knife can handle camp tasks with ease. If you are new to Bushcraft practice your skills with the Knives/Tools of your choice.

    I found the Schrade schf9 a fantastic knife being that it is very thick and can be pit through years of abuse with no chips or a broken tip the handle swell is my only complaint it is sort of uncomfortable to my hand but in a survival situation I certainly wouldn't bitch batons nicely for me chops great but fine details not so much but to me the big thing about this particular knife is that it is 1080 high carbon steel with a drop point blade for a hell of a bargain of just under 40 bucks!! Fits the budget mine came with a great edge actually and I have only sharpened it once in the year that I have had it seems to hold the edge quite well and mine came with the wrong paper in it to.

    this knife review was good but the value of the knife is the over riding thing here. if u can find the same deal for the quality for this knife then i can see the negatives that were pointed out here. but i literally paid less than 60$ bucks for this shrade so "bang for buck" the shrade gets the nod..

    Mine came sharper a few years ago (made in Taiwan) but I still fixed the edge to my liking with diamond rod then ceramic rod then a strop... all free hand. I like it a lot and have no issues batoning or chopping. Strange that you do but hey, it happens. The choil chokes up good but you are right... could have been formed to provide sharpening choil also. Don't apologize so much dude... not necessary. It's just a knife.

    Seems like a good blade. I like the idea of the blade not being razor sharp. This allows the user to sharpen their blade to their liking. Chops better if you use the bevel end of the blade. Either way your getting a lot of knife for $32-$50. Seems better than the BG Gerber knife, which isn't full tang, and softer steel and costs more. I do like Gerber's, but I also like Schrade, Condor, and Tops. Thanks for the review. God bless the great US of A!

    I'm sorry, but not all knives come razor sharp out of the box! I will say that the first thing I ended up doing with my Schrade is to run it thru my worksharp because I want a edge that I can shave with. Once that was done the super sharp convex edge batoned thru wood like it was butter.

    it's so easy to keep an edge on it. it processes wood beautifully, and the part i love best, is the weight of the knife. too many people are doing videos of them chopping with these knives, when it's so unnecessary. oh well, i definitely got my $32 worth.

    What kind of trade-offs do you think there is between the 1095 & the Stainless version?

    • @TSGEnt
      @TSGEnt  8 років тому

      I haven't used the "N" version myself, but I have used 8Cr13MoV which is what it's made from. 8Cr13MoV is a good steel, but anytime you make carbon steel stainless, you give up a little durability and edge holding ability. That's what I find anyway. If you are around water, stainless will have an advantage.

    he compares fighting knives against a bush craft knife thats not a fair comparison.
    survival/bush craft knife shrade is purpose built. but the K-BAR is for fighting/utility same with the leather neck and the Seal S.O.G. those are for war fighting. not for bush craft. and the edge for honing the 1095 steel is a different technique as well as it's a totally different type of steel than the fighting knives shown here. the main thing that was not brought up is the "value" i got mine on Amazon for less than 60$ shipped! with the Amazon prime ur saving a ton of cash. for a really decent blade.

  • @gunchief0811
    @gunchief0811 10 років тому

    great knife the sheath that comes with it is sub standard. but the knife itself is worth what i paid for it. very good quality for 60$ it's worth more than that amount it's a really good bush craft knife i really do not like the sheath it's cheap and poorly made. but i dig the actual blade itself. any blade can fail with the right amount of torture. but for 60$ bucks ur getting a very tough blade. excellent for the cost. much better than that bear Grylls nonsesne. and less expensive too.

    you have no idea what your talking about or doing and I knew for sure when you suggested a ka-bar as a survival knife. no one who knows anything would take a ka-bar out with them because they have an incredibly thin tang that goes into the handle and it will snap off if you use it to chop or baton because it's not a survival knife it's a fighting knife.

  • @Lars1540
    @Lars1540 10 років тому

    I'm sorry man but I am gonna have to go ahead and politely disagree with your review of this knife. I don't feel that you have a single legitimate con on this blade.
    The blade's weight is perfectly acceptable considering how thick the stock is and it's overall length. Especially when compared to the BK2 which weights the about the same amount but is significantly shorter and is therefore not going to chop as well as this Schrade.
    As for the edge not being very sharp out of the box; this is a common phenomenon with many knives. My advice is to learn how to sharpen a knife and this will no longer ever become an issue. Not to mention every knife owner should know how to sharpen their knives... That's kind of like a gun owner not knowing how to take his gun apart to clean it... Just saying.
    As for the coating wearing off, well.... Just about every blade coating out there wears off with use eventually (some faster than others).... It's not a big deal though. Just keep your knife oiled when not in use, or at least quickly wipe it off before you put it away when your in the field. Many Mora knives are made of high carbon steel and do not even have any type of coating and people all over the world love Mora knives and don't have any issues. Just take a look at the popularity of them.
    As for batoning, (given that it has a properly sharpened edge), this knife has ideal geometry for batoning due to the thick wedge nature of the blade. This is the same reason the BK2 does extremely well at splitting wood.
    I believe that for the price, this knife cannot be beat! It's .25" thick, full tang, solid construction, has a decent sheath, and it's scales are even affixed to the tang with Hex screws which are much stronger and less likely to strip than Torx screws! In my opinion, Schrade hit a home run with this knife! It's a knife you can really beat on and not feel guilty because it didn't cost you an arm and a leg to buy and it's built like a tank so you should never worry about it breaking either.
    You may want to sit and stew on this knife some more and maybe do a follow-up review at some point.

Having a nice sharp edge on the blade right out-of-the-box is really a reflection on the company itself. Their attention to detail, and thinking about the end-use customer. I do re-sharpen many of the knives that I get with a really sharp edge, but when it comes sharp right out-of-the-box it's a really good thing. Search for this video: to see an update. So truth be known? This knife has really proven to be a pretty good piece of steel. Keep in mind many of these things are just my opinion. I do appreciate hearing your opinion on them too. This is how we can learn from one another.

      Thanks brother! I'm glad your not one of those people that freaks out when someone simply has a difference of opinion! LOL
      I can understand your standpoint on how you feel it's a direct reflection on a company when their blade comes dull right out of the box. But let me just say this, there are plenty of blade companies out there that miss the mark on shipping their knives with a razor sharp edge out of the box. I've even seen companies that are usually known for shipping their knives with extremely sharp edges, and yet sometimes they arrive dull. It's unfortunate, but I guess my point is that I wouldn't let it sway my opinion of the knife very much, especially considering that it's an aspect of the knife that your going to have to resharpen relatively soon with heavy use anyways.
      So even though I may get the blade dull out of the box, I keep in mind that I will have to resharpen it shortly after use anyways, so I don't let that really factor into formulating my opinion of the knife. And as for my opinion of the company, I just remind myself that every company has sent out dull knives at one time or another... They can't all be perfect. hehe!
      I'm really siked that you gave this blade another chance and it earned it's way into your arsenal after getting a proper edge put on it.
      I just watched the other video you mentioned and your friend is absolutely right; recurved blades are sometimes impossible to sharpen on a flat benchstone. The easiest way to sharpen these style of blades by hand is to use a round sharpening rod. I really like the smith's pocket diamond rod, or the EZE-LAP pocket diamond rod sharpener. They both work great for all recurved style blades.
      Well, enjoy the the SCHF9 my friend! =) I hope it serves you well!

    Not getting all defensive,butt lol. Your technique on chopping with the SCHF9 is poor a best(sorry). Use a lanyard around your wrist to the pommel,long enough to use last two or the end grip choil and hit the wood with the front belly of the blade not in the recurve,your loosing power and mass. Invest in a work sharp to get the shaving edge. Then you can use a fine diamond round stone to keep up the edge in the field. Realize for a good quality steel and a design that may not do one job perfect but will do all jobs well at a budget price of about 35 to 40 bucks,,give your head a shake brother. Have a nice day.
