Great review! I got my SCHF9 a week ago and love it! I really like the weight and the ergo on the handle. I have large hands so it's hard to find knives that fit me, really love the grip. Nice idea of buying a decent sheath for it, I found a company that makes Kydex sheaths to fit the SCHF9 specifically, Cleveland Kydex Co. They sell theirs for $30.00 also. Just thought I would mention it. So for about the price of a BK7 - I'm getting a good overall 1095 camp knife and a kydex sheath that snap-fits my SCHF9. Not bad!
I can fit a small bic lighter and small SAK classic in the handle. If you're going to carry antibiotic (which is a very smart idea), get the micro bottles of Tabasco, make some chilli, empty the hot sauce into your chilli, and clean the bottle and add IODINE to it. You can use that for cleaning wounds, purifying water, or taken internally to lessen radiation exposure, etc. (The bic lighters last only for a few years in storage before corroding to unusable condition, fyi. So, i need to find a better substitute, I know.)
I know a guy who makes scales for the 9 and several other of the Schrade blades. New and thinner scales can 100% change the feel of this blade and pretty much any other blade on the market. Also, as of this post (end of 2021) Schrade has (I believe) discontinued all blades made by Griffin Designs, which is a damn shame cause they were the best in the line (one non addition to that list is the Schf51 [wish it was a saber and not a hollow grind though]) Outstanding vision GideonsTactical!
@gooby8953 true, but it's not the same as it was under the original designer. That whole series was better, until the previous company screwed over the original designer. They did the same with the schf 43 (if memory serves)
Schf9n, is a very good knife, a good material, and is inoxidabile. Please try one of these, and you will see! Very good reviews! Salute you, from Romania!
The schf9 and the schf9n are not exactly the same knife, the 9 has a Sabre grind and the 9n has a hollow grind. The steels are different, but so are the blades, I have both knives. I still think your review was great and I am subscribing.
Kudos on mentioning that.... The "9" is 1095 High Carbon with a Sabre-grind... While the "9N" is 8Cr13MoV High Carbon Stainless with a Hollow-grind... Many reviews of this knife, mention the same thing... the palm-swells on the handle slabs are too big!... Perhaps Schrade could offer a "grip kit" in various sizes?... Also, if the grip slabs didn't interfere with the spine gimping on the handle! Just an idea!
I concur it's a beast, although I am not so picky about sheaths since I see that as replaceable and the quality of the knife comes first. Not like the companies give us a choice anyway, so we have to deal with it. Again, the point has been made that if one can afford a "better" knife it's logical to buy quality, but a bargain blade allows buyers an affordable tool and possibly an extra one. Redundancy and backups are one of the survival priorities in planning for a crisis. As usual, very through review.
Take a look at the schf 18. It's the reintroduction of a S&W design from 8 or 9 years ago. Really surprised me for the price. Thick spine with a flat grind, easy recurve and a sturdy point. Works well for the woods once sharpened to spec and would do nicely as a defense tool.
I just recently bought one and I think the manufacturer screwed up on the button strap because I can’t get the ends of the strap to meet together with the knife inserted in the sheath
I don't know if anyone has broken the Schf9N doing normal tasks. If they have, please let me know and reference the video of them doing so. Throwing, stabbing and prying are not normal tasks. PREPAREDMIND101 did a pretty extensive test doing stupid things no one would ever do to their own cared for knife and the f9N did not break or bend. To believe your claim you're going to need to film your claims and show that the steel is not good or heat treated properly. This knife is on my short list to buy, the f9 version only because of the saber grind. The f9N has a hollow grind witch I'd rather not have in this particular blade even though it may chop better. Still, good video and hope you have more on these blades in the future.
great vid , packed a ton of info in . note : if had to use the bk2/esee6/f9 to heavy duty pry the f9 wins , to me a huge factor . becker imo messed up when they skeletonized tang and weakend it as a pry bar ! also , do you think theres something such as a waterproofing spray or maybe wax to apply to sheath to make the nylon material longer lasting / tougher ? schrade has a excellent item going here , ide love seeing this steel/grind/thickness in a bk7 combat version with bk like handle
Hopefully on my channel I can get to the level of trust that I see people have in your reviews. I'm very impressed! I agree about the 1095 over the chinese stainless and for the price point you just can't go wrong. Looks like I better buy one before Schrade phases this model out. I'm still learning about knives (even though I've been training in wilderness survival for several years) so you just got a new subscriber!
Country Prepper Glad I could help you, and thank you for the complement! I will be reviewing the new 1095 schrade models for 2015 in the next few months so you can look forward to that and I thank they will be better designed then this one.
I've seen a few of their new knives coming out. The ones they call bushcraft knives look like they have a hollow grind which doesn't fit the bill in my opinion. Hopefully I'm wrong and they have scandi or flat grinds. At least I think are better for carving and bushcraft tasks anyway.
Thanks for the nice review man. But Schrade and I parted ways in 2019 after the new owners wouldn't quit withholding my royalties and wouldn't stop trying to talk me into having my knives made in China instead of Taiwan. They repeatedly breached I have no further use for the company and have told them so, among other things. So the entire Griffin Design line has been discontinued.
I was under the impression a given type of steel is either 1) hard to sharpen and holds an edge for a long time OR 2) easy to sharpen but loses its edge quickly. Can't see how it would be hard to sharpen and lose its edge quickly unless it's so hard that it chips.
1:46 in, you mentioned it’s harder to sharpen than a Becker and does not hold an edge as long. 3:26 in you mentioned it’s not bad to sharpen to put an edge on so my question is it due to the difference in heat treat Becker being better than the 1095 SCHF9 steel or would it be because of the recurve when sharpening? Or the overall differences in the two company’s heat treat?
Good Video. I have the Becker BK2 and I love the hell out of it. I also have a Seal Pup Elite, A classic Buck and a bear grylls ultimate pro, though that one is misplaced and I will likely be getting the Shrade to replace it.
Looks like a good knife.you have a problem with the handle.maybe reshape it or make your own handle replacements? I have the SCHF14 and its a pretty damn good utility knife.
I like mine just fine, although I still plan on a BK-9. You certainly can't beat the price for a knife of it's capabilities. Schrade is making a major screw up with the new Chinese version, would never touch a knife for survival that isn't 1095 or O-1 steel.
A friend just gave me an SCHF9N. I know about it being Made in China, and a different steel, I've only had a chance to baton a couple pcs. of wood. Anyone else have the Chinese model, and can give me some feedback, and (or) opinion? Still feels good in the hand.
hey gideon, i've got the schf9 for a while now, and i want to mod it, kind of getting it a sawback, and i'd like to know if that would be a good or a bad thing, thanks
Only thing is they're hollow ground and i broke a quarter of the blade off merely twisting a log piece off ( rotted wood)...returned it to Dicks...got my money back.
fat grips take them off allen bolts just hold them in place'.and shave the inside flat surface down,or if you really like the blade as i do ,take them off and make a set ,wood, micarta etc and give it the personal touch.
Agreed, if people have the skills to do so;) I'm on a search for a good chopper blade to complete my system. I actually like the fat grips I have long fingers & almost every knife I've got this year hasn't felt right to me. I am thinking of getting the Condor Moonstalker/Moonshiner they look awesome but the Stalker has micarta grips and the Shiner has an awesome sheath so ya lose one thing over the other.
SCHF9 works great. The SCHF37 has a longer blade, so you could baton wider logs with it, but what type of grind does the SCHF37 haveand how wide is it? The SCHF9 has a saber grind which is ideal for batoning. You also have to ask what other tasks you will be performing with it. For example the SCHF9 has a nice re-curve belly which makes it great for chopping whereas the SCHF37 is a straight blade.
Looks like a good knife.you have a problem with the handle.maybe reshape it or make your own handle replacements? I have the SCHF14 and its a pretty damn good utility knife.

Your thanks for the design should go to Brian Griffin... His link is a few posts above this!
do you still have it and is it a good knife?
It's been 2 years of looking at this knife I really like this knife so I went ahead and got it today. Good review thanks.
Excellent video and a solid review of the SCHF9. Great info on the replacement sheath. Scott
I've made up my mind. I'm getting one.
No complaints with this knife. I like it a lot.
Just ordered one today.
That looks like a good knife. I'm going to go buy one.
Just ordered one today.
Love the design of that knife .. Such a unique shape ..
I was wondering i see the Schrade SCHF9 (no N) on ebay it looks the same but it says 'Extreme survival' -Is the Made in Taiwan?

The SCHF9N model is also a hollow ground blade, which is different than the SCHF9.
Let the knife swing in your hand about 45 degrees while chopping. It lets the weight of the knife actually cut.

The 9 hasn't been discontinued, thankfully.

akitadad Thank you so much, and welcome to the GT family.

I doubt we can get grip kits for a 40 dollar knife. But maybe someone will come up with a good mod.
The handle scales are actually TPE

Thanks so much @user/MasterK9Trainer
Budget beast! I usually stick with the basic sheaths, but at this price it might make sense to upgrade sooner.
Right on!
I have a review on the SCHF18 in my Schrade playlist, check it out.
I just recently bought one and I think the manufacturer screwed up on the button strap because I can’t get the ends of the strap to meet together with the knife inserted in the sheath
what a steal for the price.amazing!

Would you trust your life with the 1095/Taiwan version?

T&B Kuntry Strong I have found that the BK2 will hold its edge longer and resharpen easier. It is because of the heat treat.
Thanks for the reply and info,I have a BK9 and just put my hands on the F9 good informative review..atb-Brody
Hey you have to hold it on the end of knife.. after you can have more power to chop it..
Good Video. I have the Becker BK2 and I love the hell out of it. I also have a Seal Pup Elite, A classic Buck and a bear grylls ultimate pro, though that one is misplaced and I will likely be getting the Shrade to replace it.

Awesome knife 👍👍👍👍thank you for sharing it
Excellent vid, keep them coming.
Thank you very much.
It’s says on amazon now that it’s 1095 High Carbon Stainless Steel. So like... I’m kinda lost.
SCHF9 is 1095. SCHF9N is 8cr13mov.
good vid bro
Very cool...
Thanks!
Thanks!
gideonstactical
Your welcome Bro; keep up the great Videos...
Nice review, good value utility piece.
Nice review. What's the dog's name?
Hi Aaron. Can you post your facebook link? I could only find a Gideon Tactical and that is ammo sales...pretty sure it's not you. Cheers.
a lot of people forget about that spine on the knife extremely important
Do you have any tips for re sharpening with a wet stone?
Looks like a knife I need to add to my gear.
A friend just gave me an SCHF9N. I know about it being Made in China, and a different steel, I've only had a chance to baton a couple pcs. of wood. Anyone else have the Chinese model, and can give me some feedback, and (or) opinion? Still feels good in the hand.
Not a bushcraft knife? It certainly is.
hey gideon, i've got the schf9 for a while now, and i want to mod it, kind of getting it a sawback, and i'd like to know if that would be a good or a bad thing, thanks
jordy brinkmann I have never seen the need for sawbacks.
Where is the link for the aftermarket sheath?
I love mine, I keep it in my car bag all the time.
joshuah moran Nice!
Only thing is they're hollow ground and i broke a quarter of the blade off merely twisting a log piece off ( rotted wood)...returned it to Dicks...got my money back.
What state are you based out of? I've seen the logo on those gloves before.
Michael Clark The Rockies Mountains.
gideonstactical nice i live in Denver...do you know of any sheath makers close to Denver need a sheath for my BK7 and my BK2..and great video
Just ordered one today.
Just, Thank you!
does the attachment compartment on the original sheath fit the other one
fat grips take them off allen bolts just hold them in place'.and shave the inside flat surface down,or if you really like the blade as i do ,take them off and make a set ,wood, micarta etc and give it the personal touch.

What knife should i get if i wanna baton: SCHF37 or SCHF9 (This knife)
SCHF9 works great. The SCHF37 has a longer blade, so you could baton wider logs with it, but what type of grind does the SCHF37 haveand how wide is it? The SCHF9 has a saber grind which is ideal for batoning. You also have to ask what other tasks you will be performing with it. For example the SCHF9 has a nice re-curve belly which makes it great for chopping whereas the SCHF37 is a straight blade.
How much harder does the recurve make it to sharpen?
Michael Clark I have not had a problem at all.
If I paid 30 dollars for a sheath to use on a 40 dollar knife I'd want the pocket to put spare ferro rods. Just saying.
could you please also do the SCHF3 EXTREME SURVIVAL i would like to see it love your vids just subscribed
1095 best 4 m i don't mind maintaining my knives
Had this knife for a long time put it through hell an still chopping an cutting
This video reminds me of Steamboat Mickey.
The schrade schf3N is AWSOME it has a LOT better handle ;) and is very simular in rest of the tasks :)
what is the schf9cp ??
Should I get it for bushcraft
It's a big survival knife, get the schf42 for bushcraft
OK Thanks
+gideonstactical mr i want this ..
+gideonstactical mr is it possible to get in india
This better then the 42 and 42d?
Different, bigger then the 42, that is a companion knife, this is a survival knife.
Is this knife made in USA?
Taiwan.
Try to upgrade your mic also where do yo live
my handle scales doesn't fit. So my SCHF9 looks like shit
I’m buying it. I have 2xl glove size and I’m 15. Your hands are tiny trust me mate.
Jajaja hecho en usa?? Jajaja
Love the shape, sweet looking knife but the handle is too fat & ugly
Looks like a good knife.you have a problem with the handle.maybe reshape it or make your own handle replacements? I have the SCHF14 and its a pretty damn good utility knife.
