Hey man, I don't normally EVER watch videos like this. However the way you run down specifications and explain exactly why it is built the way it has been built, and what the benefit of that specific build rocks. I left this video feeling educated and well informed and I appreciate it
mora for me pls... any day of the week. does schrade and gerber pay u a lot? if yes, tell them i could do the same for them easily for a jungle environment!
Correct me if I am wrong but I am pretty sure all Schrade knives are made in China. They were bought out some years ago by I believe Taylor & Co. Taylor & Co. also make Smith & Wesson and Colt knives which are made in China. I am not saying that all Chinese stuff is garbage but China is something I don't want etched onto my knife blade. Just my opinion. To each his own.
My opinion as well. On general principal I vowed years ago no Chinese knives. I did break my vow once because a nephew wanted this type knife and he is pretty young. Bought basically this same knife at Big 5 for $14, some made up brand. I would not be surprised if the schrades came out of the same factory. That is the problem with outsourcing and brand names.
Yeah... The last US Schrade factory closed in 2004, when Taylor Brands bought them out. I'm lucky to still have a few "pre-Taylor" Schrades! I ordered a SCHF9N, and am waiting on its arrival. The "9N" differs from the "9" in 2 main ways. The "9N" is made from 8Cr13MoV High Carbon *Stainless Steel*... and the blade is is Hollow-Ground vs Sabre-Ground(most of you will know what that means)...
They are both different. The Schrade is better for bushcraft and survival tasks like that. The LMF II is a bit more diverse in it's uses. I actually use the LMF II more. It's the one that is usually in my bag when I go out into the sticks.
Good Video. The sharpener that you put out intially, which model is that? Also you mentioned mineral oil. Assuming you meant food-grade - do you recommend any, or are they all the same?
In my experience, the majority of products I have purchased that have been absolute junk were manufactured in China. That is - I have paid out of pocket and the item broke easily due to corners cut or what have you. Now is that in regard to ALL things made from China? Certainly not. This knife may be a fine piece of craftsmanship, but unless I can physically hold it in my hand to see that, I would just rather avoid the risk. Again, I'm speaking from personal experience though. Your own mileage may not exemplify as such and that's great. My comment seems like an odd thing to seemingly get offended by...it was definitely not my intention.
T.K. Archibald the stuff you bought might came here indirectly, which means that might be the seller get their merchandise from a retailer in china instead of coming out of the factory and come straight here
Good question. We use our tree firewood, shelter, props for the peach trees etc... Trees are a renewable resource... And with proper management provide a sustainable supply for us. Nothing goes to waste here... We heat with passive solar (no heat running on sunny days) and with wood 100% every other day. I am a tree hugger... haa... haa... and I love my trees and take care of my forest and it takes care of me. Thanks man! ~David
I have a request. Could you make a video on how to survive being attacked by a bear with only a knife to defend yourself. Like if you are able to reach your knife and the bear hasn't already ripped you to shreds. Also the vital areas of a bear. Where you should strike if you have the chance. I'm not planning to fight a bear. But if I encounter one I would like to be able to live through it. I know about wearing bells while hiking and bear spray. I also own a gun. But I'm talking about worst case scenario . If a video like this already exist. can someone give me the link. Thank you.
Raymond Mata according to a guide I purchased a 9" blade bone handled knife off of explained to me very kindly that your chances of surviving a bear attack with just a knife are zero. A bear doesnt die like a human, as soon as we bleed we stop and understand what is happening, a bear does not it just continues to kill until its heart stops or it bleeds out which would be a long time before you even had a chance to do any damage and it would just kill you
In Alaska, the bear threat is real and people die. They Glock 21 I had would only be effective if I where to get lucky enough to hit the bear in the eye socket and have the projectile enter the brain cavity. Which is virtually impossible if they are moving. If you have seen the movie with Leo Dicaprio and how the bear attacks, that is pretty accurate. Other than him surviving. This small grizzly bear I saw in Denali park (450 lbs) was able to dig through the tundra in two scoops to get to these little white potatoes (Sluice I think they are called). The bear went through the tundra (frozen ground that shovels can't penetrate) like it was sand at the beach. They can run up to 35 miles per hour. So a knife attack would have to severe its carotid to have any chance of eventually killing it. But that would be after you are dead. Please not go into the woods. Just stay in the city.
In the early 1800s, California pioneers would tie a grizzly bear by the rear legs to a pole in a corral. Then they would release a long horn steer in to the corral. These animals are deadly enemies and fight to the death. The bears generally swatted the steer on the neck killing it instantly. Occasionally the steer would stab the bear to death. Reminds me of the Romans releasing prisoners into the Colosseum to fight lions.

When the chips are down or society has collapsed or face to face with a pissed off boar or bear...go for that Chinese steel...LOL. After being an importer for 18 years, you get what you paid for.
The way the handle flares out at the top is called a recurve design. In folding knives, it allows you to pack a larger blade into a smaller cutting surface. It also makes the blade a little bit better at slicing motions just due to the geometry of the blade overall. In fixed blades like this one, recurves come in handy for about the same reasons. But the added bonus is that they also have more heft at the top of the blade making them better chopping tools. You just proved its chopping design.
the wife bought me this knife, its big and bulky, its holds a edge ok and the sheath is cheap junk ... the schrade has left me totally unimpressed and a bit salty.
TeamMCSRacing There seem to be alot of inconsistencies among users regarding manufacturing quality of the blade and pouch. Im not saying i dont believe you, but my pouch has lasted months with no problem
TeamMCSRacing If you want a Kydex sheath, get one from a quality craftsman. Recurve blades are tricky. Another survival channel recently reviewed a Kydex crafter's SCHF9 sheath. Shouldn't be hard to find...
Thanks for the question. Cool Steel has some great knives and some cheap knives as do most manufacturers. Many of their martial arts products are made of cheaper steel. Generally their survival knives are fine. Their knives made of AUS 8 or AUS 8A are generally very good. Hope this helps. ~David
Thanks bro. No waste here... we try to use it all. I love trees... and we heat with wood... And trees are a renewable, and with proper management, sustainable resource... And we try to only cut stuff we are going to use for something, like firewood or a structure, peach tree props of something. Please sometimes it is good to thin out some trees for the good of the forest... So no worries. I hug my trees often and I take care of our forest, and it takes care of us. Thanks man! ~David
This is the most amazing, professional and captivating video review of a product I have ever seen. I have a few favorites and now I'm adding you to my list.
I have to say thank you very much. Because of this video I decided to buy one a month ago and sense I have bought it, I have taken it everywhere on my hikes and camp outs. Its the one knife I use for everything. Thank you!
Great vid! I own several of the Survival Extreme, I have the SCHF1, SCHF2 and my favorite the SCHF9, one thing you should know! I am a leftie through & through, on the SCHF9's sheath all you need to do is GENTLY pop open the rivet on bottom of sheath (right above the 2 paralel holes for leg cord), then remove plastic sleeve and turn it around, re-instal and again GENTLY put the rivet back in and press it until it snaps & voila! a lefty sheath! so far in 7 months no problems!
Excellent review. One of the best and most thorough reviews I have seen in a while. The close up pictures were excellent and really helped show off the individual characteristics of the knife. It looks like I will be adding another knife to my ever expanding collection.
Thanks for the comment. Yes... Schrade is having a hard time keeping up with demand... I think since this review went out. For solar chargers... I have them on my list... the one I like the most so far is the Powertraveller Power Monkey Extreme 9000mAh Solar Charger. Let me know what you think. ~David
I have been searching around for a great knife to ad to my bug out bag/emergency bags for quite some time now and I think I just for the right knife I am looking for. Awesome thorough review!!!
Hey... awesome. Welcome aboard! Thanks... Good comment. Yes, I agree... I would take a good knife over a gun in a survival situation... I'd like to have both... but if I had to choose... a great knife it is. Take care bro! ~David
GREAT review, in depth, detailed and with REAL value. THANK You for not making it about what is 'cool' or 'tactical', but what really works and is needed in a REAL world. Will definitely check out more of your vids and your sight for more gear reviews & recommendations!
Got linked here from a forum discussing good survival knives. I really like the video and a few of your others I've watched now including the one reviewing the LMF II. I love my LMF II. I just ordered this knife (Schrade Extreme Survival SCHF9) and I'm looking forward to putting it to the test! I like your reviews! Keep on keeping on!
thank you so much for the review i now have the best knife i have ever had in my hand i have bough almost every knife you have reviewed ,your the best person to review a knife
Well, S & W makes a TON of different folding knives... I have maybe a half dozen different ones here... what one in particular do you like. For the most part I am VERY impressed with the quality and price point of the S & W gear. I will be reviewing a LOT of S & W gear this year... because of the quality, design and price point being excellent. ~David
You rock dude! Welcome aboard! Thanks for the comment. I'll work some more terminology in for the future. REALLY appreciate the help and suggestions! Have a great day! ~David
Hi Matthew... I personally carry the LMF II and my go to survival knife... but the Gerber Prodigy is very nice and serrated and don't forget about the Schrade SCHF3... styling is a bit different than the SCHF9 but it's every bit the beast! Hope this helps bro! ~David
Hi Jack. I'll put something together in the Spring or Summer... Maybe remind me... It's too cold out now... although I was throwing knives at my cork board on the studio the other day... :)
Good questions/ s. Many of the best survival knives are made of non-stainless steel... many non-stainless steels are stronger and hold an edge better and are MUCH more affordable. We are a bit stainless crazy with knives... but with minimal care a non-stainless knife made of good quality steel care serve you very well. Hope this helps! ~David
I've been looking for a knife exactly like this. Love the sheath! Love how the thumb hole is good for a fire starter. Bought this as soon as I could find it at my local hardware store. Thanks for the great review!!!
Hey Frederick... I'm curious. Do you have this knife? Have you compared it to the BG? Words mean things and when you say one knife "sucks" and another is better... it's cool to have some more information. Thanks for the comment. Looking forward to your reply. ~David
Great knife...at a great price. I bought this knife about a year ago and I have put it through its paces a few times out in the woods. Great for light to medium chopping and batoning. I was able to make some great fuzz sticks. Three stitches later...I can attest to blade sharpness. Worth every penny!
Very well done review. I've had one of these for over a year, and I agree with your review in all but one point: the grip. The finger grooves are awkwardly spaced for my hands, and I find my middle finger does not seat well without spreading my grip. I can do it, but it's a stretch to find a secure hold. But, for the price, this beast of a knife is a bargain. Mine stays in my car for emergencies, since I have no doubt that it will survive any use I need to put it to.
Great comment bro! I could see the handle being a bit awkward for some. Yeah, this puppy is a beast for sure. Thanks for the story and kudos! Have a great day! ~David
Yes... the SCHF3 is much the same quality, build etc... but the styling is quite different... I actually like the look of the SCHF3 better... it's more Backcountry looking... if you want a knife with serrations, of similar quality, steel etc... as the SCHF9... this is the knife to get! Hope this helps. ~ David
Great review! You mentioned that the front part of the blade (tip area) was thicker and you wasn't sure why.The reason the front part of the blade is thicker is for prying. My Cattigarrius is shaped like that and it was used in the military to pry open crates.
Oh yeah... The pup is a great knife... but a little small if you have big hands... and a lot more tactical than survival knife. I have one, just have not reviewed yet. You are gonna be happy with the Extreme Survival bro. Let me know what you think! ~David
i was blessed and bought this knife for 38$ cash brand new in box.. then paid for shipping from the sellers and that cost me about 9 bucks so total was less than fifty bucks for knife and then shipping BRAND NEW in box. either way a great deal for a great survival knife, it's one of the best deals on the market currently for this type of gear. excellent review..
The price is what gave this knife it's edge for me. If it's going to be on par with some other knives on it's price I'll buy another one I was looking at before hand. Glad you posted this. Thanks.
I have owned and have used this knife since it has hit the market. It’s indestructible! I’ve used it for bush craft and everything else and it’s freaking awesome! It’s worth way more than it costs.
Good review. Looks like a great knife. One thing that you didn't mention about 1095 steel, is that it will throw a spark with flint, chert, or quartz, which is why so many bush crafters prefer high carbon steels over stainless.
The sheath...I wrapped 12 feet of paracord around it just below where the knife gos in.i also bound a compass to the bottom with the lower cord, in the pouch,a sharpening stone, fire starting rod, small bottle, vial of potassium permanganate.
I bought a Schrade 9 and took it out to do a bit of batoning for kindling. When I was done half of the fasteners in the handle had worked their way loose and were lost in the ground debris. I did not like this at all. I thought the fasteners should have been more secure.
now I'm set with my survival knife ( i have the blackbird so-2) but my mom needs a knife I might recommend this one to her. although i am very impressed with the sheath.
sheath is almost the same as my smith & Wesson search and rescue, I love it, can carry it sideways attached to your belt loops, around your neck or on your belt vertically.
I finally was able to pick up my SCHF9. I've been wanting one ever since I saw your review. Thanks for the info and tests you showed, David! I even got 2! Now my hubby can never ask to borrow mine! It was even more impressive in person. Completely in love with the sheath. The handle is a little large for my hand, but I can steal easily grip it, and it will work perfectly for all the monster tasks, like chopping and spliting that I use camp knives for. Thanks again
you should do the buck 119 special. that knife has proved it's self and has been one of the best selling knives by buck for 47 years! I wish they still made the 120 general tho because my dad has had his for almos 30 years and it has never had nicks in the blade or dings and he has used it for path clearing hunting fishing etc. the 119 may not be a "survival knife" but it has proved it's self to me through being a good all around knife for every day use
Yes... I will be reviewing the other two some time in early 2013. I like both the schf9 and the schf3. They are very different. The SCHF3 has serrations for one... I don't really care for the SCHF2... it is an interesting concept having a knife be all one piece of steel... Yes, if you got the SCHF9 and the LHR, you would have a very good bushcraft survival kinfe and a very good tactical, combat, fighting / survival (LHR). I would then suggest a very good folder also for EDC. ~David
Love your reviews, been looking for a good inexpensive survival knife. I didn't go with the SCHF9, but the SCHF3. Thanks to all your reviews I was able to make my choice. I will purchase the SCHF9 later in the future. Took me a Month to make my choice and will see how well of a choice I made once put to the real world test with my up coming camping trips this year.
I have one of their knives which I have on my utility belt and it is a great knife. After receiving mine I was very impressed and soon replaced the German knife which I had on my belt. The sheath is good enough for what I will use it for and should last for years.
Glad to hear you like the video! It's the comment like yours that keeps us going bro!
Your by far the best at explaining survival stuff on UA-cam.
Should get my SCHF9 this Friday. My next knife purchase will be the BK-7. Thanks for the superb review.
Ordered mine from Amazon, it got here yesterday and I am definitely pleased. Thanks for the review!
Correct me if I am wrong but I am pretty sure all Schrade knives are made in China. They were bought out some years ago by I believe Taylor & Co. I will give you a hell yeah on that one. Those commi sum bithces
The sheath is made in China, the knife itself is made in Taiwan
Yeah... The last US Schrade factory closed in 2004, when Taylor Brands bought them out. I'm lucky to still have a few "pre-Taylor" Schrades!

The sharpener is a sog sharpener combo fire starter
Just got my SCHF9 for $35 shipped. What a beast of a knife with a deluxe and versatile sheath! Very impressed!
I'm in the market for a knife similar to this. I got excited about this particular one and found out it's made in China...
Back to the drawing board.
Everything is made in China these days bro... I feel your pain.
T.K. Archibald get a becker or a esee very good but expensive
Thanks for the rec LilFluffBall LilFullBall ! I actually ended up getting an Ontario 499. I like it a lot so far!

Stainless steel rocks
+Instablade Credit Card Knife Not in my opinion.
+HowToBasic Huh just to comment something.
+Instablade Credit Card Knife Stainless steel does rock. In fact it kicks ass.
Instablade Credit Card Knife provided its a good stainless , it can be very excellent

Yours are by far the absolute best reviews out there. I always know where to go to find a product I can trust. Thanks!
Man, I really appreciate the encouragement - especially today! Thanks! ~David
Good comment Andrew! Thanks for helping the cause and making people aware of our standards here. REALLY appreciate you bro. Take care! ~David
Thanks bro. The SCHF3 review is coming early in 2013. Great knife. If you want serrations, it's every bit as good as the SCHF9. Take care. ~David
Thanks for the comment... I have actually been most impressed with the vast majority of Schrade knives lately. Take care!

Thanks for the great review!!!
your welcome ! and its good that u respond to 99% of the comments
and thanks hope you have a good day to David
Hey Frederick... I'm curious. Do you have this knife? Have you compared it to the BG? Words mean things and when you say one knife "sucks" and another is better... it's cool to have some more information. Thanks for the comment. Looking forward to your reply. ~David
Great knife...at a great price. I bought this knife about a year ago and I have put it through its paces a few times out in the woods. Great for light to medium chopping and batoning. I was able to make some great fuzz sticks. Three stitches later...I can attest to blade sharpness. Worth every penny!
I subscribed because of your description box. The information you provided is great. Very responsible and considerate of you. Thanks :-)
Impressive review. Thanks! Very thorough without being too long and I like the alternate choices at the end.
You're reviews are great. Very professional and great line of thinking when testing and critiquing. Look forward to more reviews!
~David
Glad you liked it! ~ David
You got it Matt. Take care bro! ~ David
You will both smile and be very happy. Make a great Christmas gift! :) ~David
Yes... the SCHF3 is much the same quality, build etc... but the styling is quite different...
Very, very well-done video. Great camera. Schrade has always made some great knives.
You are poetic. I almost cried reading your comment... Funny. Thanks man. ~David
Excellent! Thanks for your comments! ~David
Thanks for the comment. Do you have one? Have you tested it? Just curious what you are basing your comments on? Thank man! Keep moving forward. ~David
Thanks for the suggestions. We are always trying to improve. Have a great day! ~David
What do you think of the Gerber Gator Machete, I've heard good things and I just ordered one
Nick's Strength and Power how’d you like it
I bought a Schrade 9 and took it out to do a bit of batoning for kindling. When I was done half of the fasteners in the handle had worked their way loose and were lost in the ground debris. I did not like this at all. I thought the fasteners should have been more secure.
Yeah... they are out of stock everywhere... Schrade is trying to restock... Check out the SCHF10... my review should be up tonight.
now I'm set with my survival knife ( i have the blackbird so-2) but my mom needs a knife I might recommend this one to her. although i am very impressed with the sheath.
sheath is almost the same as my smith & Wesson search and rescue, I love it, can carry it sideways attached to your belt loops, around your neck or on your belt vertically.
Thanks Ross. Good comment!
you should do the buck 119 special. that knife has proved it's self and has been one of the best selling knives by buck for 47 years!
~David
Good point. You get what you spec and QC from overseas. Bad specs + Bad QC = Bad Product!
I just got this knife and I must say it is a great knife. Thanks for the review.
Glad you enjoyed it!
I love mine, the small compartment in the front is perfect for some hooks and weights,I also wrapped a ton of fishing line beneath the twine holder.
I have one of their knives which I have on my utility belt and it is a great knife. After receiving mine I was very impressed and soon replaced the German knife which I had on my belt. The sheath is good enough for what I will use it for and should last for years.
Yes... I have a Gerber Prodigy in made of Sandvick... nice! ~ David
Wow! Thanks man. Have a great day! ~David
