Description:
Legend has it that this motor was build for the dirt track races with a giant cam in it and a rebuilt turbo 400 tranny. 3500 stall converter. She’s a 400 block Chevy with a 350 crank making her a 377 Stroker! The only problem is she’s been sitting in a field for 6-7 years. Follow along as I drag her home, clean her up and try to breath some life back into the ol girl. She’s a fire breather I will say that much!!

Thank you sir!
Love it!! Thought is saw a trailer behind your truck the other day with this on it.. Score!
Thanks man. I’m excited to have it. Cheap trucks are more fun 😂
There’s a 9/16 bolt below distributor that you have to loosen. Check firing order and dump that old gas out of it. Thanks for the shout out!
I found it after the video. Confirmed the firing order and been jacking with timing but struggling. Going to change out plugs and make sure no valves are stuck next. Needs fresh fuel for sure. Who knows. Carb may have trash too.
@@okspeedshop mite be a sticky valve hopefully you didn’t bend a push rod
Thats one rust free truck. And thank you so much for the awesome shout out. I think you will be big in no time
Thank you dude!
Turn it with the socket
The fan turn a little bit
@@okspeedshop ya np 😊

Good rebuild
Thank you!!
Check spark plug wire firing order first. Next pull distributor cap see if the rotor button is pointing toward # 1 piston when it’s up on compression stroke
Awesome advice! I’m learning! I appreciate you guys sharing your knowledge! Please keep it up!
Porter spark plugs out of it and soak it with some PB blaster if not WD-40 and manually rotate the motor by the front crank or the flywheel !
THIS!
That silver thing was the blinker relay!
Cool truck. You'll get it. God bless!
Thanks 👍
Firing order!! Carburetor as well!!
Carb is new ish but I prob sucked a bunch of trash fuel through it. I don’t really know how to time an engine yet either. Trying to figure that out. How do I locate number 1 on distributor?
The little silver round thing you said to please comment on is your flasher relay for your turn signals in some years it also does the hazard lights
Found that out later haha learning a lot
I just came across your channel i like the content so far like how your honest and just trying your best nothing better than honest work man keep it up youll succeed in no time
Man I greatly appreciate that! I don’t have much experience but learning a lot and having a blast! Thanks for watching!
That is why the flasher was out I would check the firering order and the timing and put good gas in it hope you get it running good
Makes sense! That’s the plan now!
One of the honest will it run-videos I've ever seen😂 Very enjoyable as in different. Phrases like "Don't know what this is" and "Don't know what it's supposed to look like ... (or similar)" really spiced up the viewer experience!
It's my first time here on this channel, so I'll subscribe for more 👍
Hahaha stay tuned for more of me not knowing what the heck I’m doing 😂
Can't wait to see where this build goes I just came across your channel it came across my feed and I'm an avid C10 enthusiast I have a 83 that I built 6/8 drop rally wheels it's white with black interior custom gauges it's got a sb 355 ci backed by a 700r4 trans it's been a long process had it almost 15 years and I'll never be done with it it's my baby. My daily driver as well!
Ah nice I want to see that. What drop kit did you use? I’m about to lower my red one. Thinking 4/6. This blue one is already lowered but they did it by cutting leaf springs out so I may redo the rear. Thanks for watching man
It's a full belltech set up all the way around with nitro drop 2 shocks. The shocks are for 3-inch drop but it makes it a firmer ride in my opinion much better handling that way too and they have plenty of stroke still no bottoming out... 2" C notch as well.
37:36 recheck the wire placement and check to see if your getting fuel to the carb via tank and/or fuel pump.
Nice looking truck would not mind owing one like that, went ahead and subscribed to see the follow-ups
Awesome bro thank you!! Will be posting follow up vid soon with new plugs and some updates. Thanks for joining in! Hoping this truck gets me monetized here on YT. Been a long time goal of mine! Thanks for being a part of that 👊🏻
Nice old truck ! Our son has the GMC like that ! Good Luck ! 👍✌

I keep reviewing this because I am in love with this truck.
Wow thanks man! I’m about to get back on her soon. Just got some 373 gears to put in so she’s gonna be fun! Need a hood.

Also, on the base of the distributor has a hold down with a 9/16 bolt that tightens it down.
Aha! That helps to know 😅
god ied work on old trucks like that any day of the week. i grew up working on, building and driving trucks like that. can tell by the way its running the firing order is off. that motor should be pretty snappy. fresh fluids, fresh tune up and maybe some tuning on the carb and timing and that thing should move down the road pretty good.
Thanks so much! I’m excited about it! I’m literally learning every single thing as I do it so it may take me longer than most but with the help of this UA-cam community I think I’m going to get there!! I appreciate the comment!
@@okspeedshop not a problem. I'll try to help answer any questions you have.
Yes it’s the same as a 350 small block. You have a 400 small block with 350 crank rods and pistons in the bottom half of the 400 small block which makes it 373
Firing order!!!
Thank you I’ll double check this when I get home. I thought I had it right but may have started in wrong spot? Will post follow up video soon
That was a signal blinker, back feeding that purple key wire got it making contact, pull the blinker back out if it will still crank
Ohh ok I knew it had to be something cuz it was unresponsive before
Cree oil works great also
Never heard of that I’ll check that out thank you!
Starter may have water in it you might want to change the starter or at least pull it and bench test it but remember you do have a another starter inside
Try turning locked engine by hand, apply the ratchet and turn it over. The ignition doesn't fit, you have to change the ignition cables!!!
That little register is a flasher for the blinker, but I think you're battery was low
Some vice grip garage shine juice and you got a looker there 🎉
Thank ya buddy 😄
Good luck with your channel I only seen you have just a few videos 👍
Thank you! Yes was fortunate and got some views early on. Hoping to keep of the momentum. Thanks for commenting!
Always check your wiring connections. Especially your grounds. If they have any rust or corrosion. Clean em off. Also try spraying kroil or PB blaster in the cylinders and cranking it without the spark plugs in.
Thank you this is great advice. I learned a lot on this one. You all have offered some amazing pointers thank you
Use the idle screw and turn the idle up just a little bit check your wiring firing order
Ok awesome thank you I’ll mess with that! What do the other two screws do??
@@okspeedshopare they on the carb? If so those are for adjusting how much fuel goes in clock wise is for rich and counter clock wise for lean
Yes on the carb. Two screws, are both for same thing?
Change oil run zinc additive Lucas . I'd pull the valve covers check valves etc then go to timing then fuel
Zinc additive Lucas. NOTED thank you!
Change the gas or run an external gas can. Adjust the timing or check the ignition coil under the cap. Check the cap contact points as well and make sure they are clean.
After vid posted I did just that (minus distributor cap) helped a ton! Thank you!
@@okspeedshop no prob and I'm looking forward to more vids on the project. Good buy!
@@jaylawz1 thank you bro!! Coming soon!
There's a lock nut under the distributor which is a half inch or a 13 mm
FOUND IT 😅
It’s alive
1979-80 front end and dash, only thing 1982 I saw were the door panels. Power brake booster with a manual brake pedal. Not a bad little truck though.
It coded back to an 80! Good eye
I saw the same thing . I have a 82 and I was thinking someone swapped the front clip. Even better being a 80 tho
@@ronthewelder7305 I agree that’s what I thought as well 🤙🏼
Its a flasher for the signal lights/emergency flashers
Definitely check you firing order can tell it's not hitting on all 8 if im not mistaken the 400 firing order is the same thru out all sbc motors
Ok I’ll double check that today thank you
There's a hold down bolt at the base of the distributed on the right side
Ok I’ll look for that tomorrow!
Is the flasher for the turn signals and hazards
So does that make a difference on whether ign switch gets power? When I reinstalled it the key worked?!
All sbc firing orders are 18436572 in a clockwise rotation on the distributor, number 1 on the cap should be pointing towards cylinder 1, ive also ran into what is known as a 4 and 7 swap on the cam which is i believe only a roller cam deal
She’s got roller rockers… please explain the 4 and 7 swap thing. Thanks!
If it has a specific cam that is designed differently cyl 4 and 7 will switch positions on the firing order rotation usually used with more "race" builds
@@rootperformance7232 interesting!! I’ll try that
Exhaust hanger lol
It can run!!
It. Is. ALIVE! 😂
oh man, this is painful. you and dd's speed shop need to hang out.
Would love to! 😜
39:54 Also make sure wires are pulled up off headers.. might be shorting out.
Oh I didn’t know that could happen by touching headers. That might be a problem
Brother make sure none of your wires a crossed first. Very cool truck!!!
Thank you man! She definitely needs a little wiring work!! 😅 stay tuned!
Definitely do a oil change also to make sure you get it all out especially if any water in it since you said it was sitting in water
Good idea that’s on the list for sure
It's for the flashers. U probably found a purple hot wire from the starter. To the coil.
Leave the moss that’s awesome!
Call it mossome
Hahaha yall ain’t right.
Sweet
🤘🏻🤘🏻 this has been what’s been distracting me from wiring that fan 😂
That silver thing is for your blinkers. I think your the switch on the steering column might be dirty and not making a good connection
Yes discovered that later haha. I’m learning
Definitely scheme that starter
What’s that mean? 🤣
Also you want to make sure it's in park or at least the neutral safety switch is engaged
Yes that’s a good point that could be bad!
Get the number one hole piston up to top then run the firing order then get wrench and loosen the bolt under the cap on intake and turn the thing
Thanks!!
Also set your idle screw in a little
Put some 2 cycle oil mixed in fuel to help lubricate pistons so they're not dry
i got some for the next one! Thanks!
That one piece was a exhaust hanger and the mount is a transmission mount
40 years experience , California Smoke
Glad to have guys like you willing to chime in for a newbie! Needing all the help I can get!
The idle circuit on the carburetor might be clogged and it leans out when it tries to idle you can get a rebuild kit and try rebuilding it but very simple there’s many videos on how to rebuild one of those carburetors Edelbrock 1406
Awesome sounds like I need to do some studying. Thanks!
Take the spark plugs out and put marvel mystery oil in the cylinders let sit for a day or two then put a socket on crank bolt and rock it and get a full 360 degree rotation on engine
Take the dust cover off put the pry bar on the flywheel turn it
There's a fusible link on the fire wall that blows it's in a block
That's metal piece with the rubber grommet looking thinig you picked up outta the back was an exhaust hanger I believe
Yep that’s what I’ve been hearing. Thank you
Yessir I dig the truck. I'm looking forward to more content with it.
@@dougbranum6386 thank you bro! I’ve got this one going and just picked up an 83 to tinker with too for the channel. Thanks for being a part!

Ok I’ll try that later today.
That’s a trans mount!
I need you with me on these deals haha
Cool channel
Thanks man!
That silver thing is the flasher relay
It seemed to be important 😄
Most times you definitely don't want to rev a motor that's been sitting that long. Especially one that's been built
Woops 😅 see this is why I need y’all’s help
That wire off the distributor was probably for the tach
Yep that’s what it ended up being!
Put the transmission in reverse and rock it back and forth !
Oh, I was trying in neutral. Reverse is better?
Start with 2 cycle oil and fuel in carb to start for lubrication with new plugs ,cap, rotor, and fresh stand alone fuel tank and watch her fire. I start old engines in worse condition, love to bring um back to live.
Ohhh yeah I remember seeing some people do that!! Thanks for the reminder I will get some to keep around!!
Huh, ran into your video this morning. Think i actually know you from somewhere ..? Anyways badass truck man. Nice seeing another person wanting to learn. Umm you definitely need to get your firing order correct..do not ever rev the guts out of an engine like that, that is clearly firing wrong/ timing may be a bit off. You WILL ruin the engine.
Well hell man! Good luck and ill be watching. Sure am excited too see what all you do with this. Ill obviously check out the rest of your channel.
Hat man thanks for watching! I appreciate the advice and the kind words! No telling, might have met you! I’ve been all over. Where are you from?
At the beginning when cleaning out the bed that thing you asked what it was, was an exhaust hanger lol. Don’t know how you didn’t catch that one lolzzz
I’m a newb I don’t know what anything is haha
@@okspeedshop truck is awesome sure wish I could find some gems like this in my area!
@@okspeedshopjust got farther into the video. I don’t think it’s locked up. I think it may just be hydro locked. Pull the plugs and see if it turns over. If it’s hydro locked it won’t turn over by hand either because theirs no where for the water to go on the pistons. If you pull the plugs and it still won’t turn over it’s locked up.
@@landoooooooo69 you nailed it!
@@okspeedshop theirs multiple variables to it back firing out the carb. 1 could be air to fuel mixture not right.. could be an air leak or like you said timing. Being that you have to keep the rpm’s up to stay running I think it’s running to lean which is not enough fuel. If it was too rich it would back fire out the exhaust. I’d start by taking the carb off and clean it regardless and when putting it back on check make sure no vacuum leaks and play with the idle screws to find that happy medium spot. If you want to just jump to it just bump the idle screw up and see if that helps. If you go through all of those steps and still nothing I’d check fuel pressure and filters. But with it running when giving it gas I think it’s just the idle screw. They tend to work loose from vibration over time.
😊 take a positive wire run it down and touch the starter
Yes I need to do some wiring. May do that today. Thank you
The turn signal lever is broken or missing is why the flasher was out pull it back out blinker will go off
I had that same thought earlier haha I bet that’s right
Got a miss fire check all the plug wires make sure in the correct order
I changed plugs out later and it helped a ton. I think I fouled them when trying to start after oiling the cylinders. I think there’s still something going on in there though….
If u have any questions about any Chev truck let's me know
So many questions haha
that stuff is called letchen it grow's on oak tree's to
I guess it isn’t prejudice between oaks and chevys haha
Check fireing order
I did but I need to confirm I’ve got number one in the right place. I’ll do a follow up vid. Thanks!
It should be a little nut down the base of the distributor loosening you should be able to turn it
Finally found it! 🙌🏻
Firing order
I’ll give it a check again today!!
Idle the carburetor up alittle so it will stay running
Put the fuel filter before the fuel pump not after because the diaphragm in the fuel pump will go bad with the trash in the gas tank always put the fuel filter before the fuel pump not after
Ah good idea. Does it hurt to have two filters? If I cut one in before pump do I need to do away with this one?
Factory filter is on the carb inlet on a quadrajet, so it’s after the pump. Personally I would have it before the pump too, not knowing what condition your tank is, run the two filters.
Fuel is probably bad, pull the tank, check and clean it, blow the fuel lines out.
Go through the firing order, if you have not already
Clean or change your plugs
@@williammccabe3767 thank you!
Definitely sounds like you got a few wires crossed.
Ok I’m gonna re check that. Thank you
thank you for taking the time to record all this for us this was a blast to watch and i really appreciate your humility and showing that it's a process and not just jump cutting to the end when it's all fixed up. makes it seem more achievable for people like me
Haha glad you enjoyed it Mike! I enjoyed learning on this pickup! More to come!
It sounds like it's still not hitting on all 8 . Either another wire is crossed or timing or timing chain has jumped a notch or two. Or the plugs are really bad in it. Good luck!
Changed out plugs and it helped ALOT. check out the next video and let me know what you think
oh yeah, she sounds like a beast🙄 lo. it sounds more like my clapped out 1978 305 .
Probably worse. Sounds like my lawn mower right now.
I need that truck for parts for my 84
I think she has life left in her!
The timing is off there is a clamp on the bottom of the distributor that you have to loosen up to adjust the timing
I later found a 9/16 bolt that worked! Thank you!
@@okspeedshopyour welcome
There's a bolt on the distributor holding it
It’s running on about 4 cylinders
That’s what I’m thinking. New plugs helped but I think something’s stuck open.
It’s got roller rockers
I remember the guy saying that, what are the benefits of having those?
It's in the ignition you need power to your distributor
Something was out of whack for sure. I think I got lucky and figured it out……kinda 😂
Put extra ground wire on starter
To block or frame or body? Does it matter?
You should do a compression test to see whether there are stuck valves. A stuck intake valve will cause backfiring and noise out of the carburetor. One hint for you as you get more experience working on things like this- work backwards from what the worse cause for an engine not turning is. You spent a lot of time changing the starter, and worrying about the wires to the starter, and plugging the turn signal relay back in, when the engine was just flat out locked up. If you aren't sure what you should do, google it.If you guess at things you will go from an engine that's probably already in time to one that is way out of time. Remember that doctors don't try to cure the symptom, they try to cure the cause. I'd do the compression test and make sure each cylinder is contributing. Have fun!
Man this is great advice that I needed to hear. Thank you so much. I have already learned so much because of guys like you being kind enough to chime in. I will be this much further ahead on future projects!
Also I checked out your channel and subscribed! Your channel is going to be a great resource for me! Thanks for connecting! 👊🏻
Trace your firing order out. Or its 180 degrees out. Not really positive on the 180 out though. I wouldn't move the distributor cause the vacuum advance looks like it's in about the right vicinity its supposed to be. Carb is gonna need adjusting as well.
Hopefully you wont have overheating issues with that 400 sb.
It's got potential bro.
Thanks so much for this comment. After replacing spark plugs it cleaned up a LOT. I think it will just need some fine tuning now. I’m not really experienced in that so any advice is welcomed! Thanks!
Agreed, distributor could be off 180⁰ or firing order off. Engine sounds sickly.
@@lzlz-xv6oe please stay tuned I’m going to post a follow up vid with new spark plugs and messing with timing. Want to hear what you guys think after that. I’m just learning so I need y’all’s trained ears. Thank you!
