- On this episode of Ok Speed Shop, I am BACK on the mossy blue 1980 C10 Cheyenne. (GM STARTER INSTALLATION)
If you remember, this is the #abandoned #squarebody that I pulled out of a field that has the #377stroker motor in it and the big cam. Ive been trying to get this thing to run right but have been distracted on the junkyard dog truck and other things but NOW IS THE TIME to get this ol girl back in the garage! Only problem is…..now she won't start again… Let me just say, things get a little....SMOKY...
Watch an idiot try to figure out the problem HAHA

You should invest in one of those $50 10x10 canopy tents for if you can't get it in the shop. Saved me many a day when it's hotter than a fire ants nest in a flash flood.
DEFINITELY put a new fusible link to the starter. Fires are no fun.
Switch over to a clutch fan with a shroud.
Timing is pretty far out, get that dialed in when you get the miss figured out and rockers set up.
Taking on someone else's project can be a very daunting task. If it wasn't done right, you will be working on it constantly. But in the end, it will be worth it. You're going to have more fun than a steel beaked woodpecker in a petrified forest with that truck.
@@jayb.5017 hahaha I’m loving the analogies here dude 😂😂
And yes someone else mentioned the fusible link! I can’t believe I did that. I’ll be fixing that asap! I appreciate the helpful comment buddy
Should b grounded to the block. Also check ur ground straps!
@@ShadeTreeMechanic8962 yeah I need to get behind the block and see what’s up with that
Get you a vortec starter from a V6 S10 that'll help you so much the mini starter
@@BlakeBackman-p1c watch to the end 😉😉
Thanks for another , Brother !
Way to see you keep trying. I've been there and it really takes patience to learn. You'll be fine just don't give up.
Thank you James! Didn’t grow up with a wrench in my hand like some but I am enjoying the learning process! I appreciate the support!
I’m 18 minutes in and I think your rebuilt starter is bad, mine would throw the drive gear out, but couldn’t turn the engine over. Was a brand new starter.
Yeah I think so too. Parts house didn’t agree but oh well
great video. im suprised that blinker bulb didnt burnt out yet 😂
@@Tannerrebuilds she’s trusty 😂😂
That truck has a high stall converter in it.
@@ClassicCarRevivals yes 3500 stall. How could you tell?
@@okspeedshop by the size of the converter
@@ClassicCarRevivals oh I didn’t realize it would be physically bigger. Cool
Master mechanic Matt
Awesome man! Love your grit and your grace haha! Both trucks sound great!
Thank you bro! How do you know Lance??
Happy Birthday!
@@2-STROKEFUN thanks amigo! How old am I?
i actually jumped when the starter fell... thought you were done for lol
@@mattrage1673 HAHA my life flashed before my eyes. I don’t know how I dodged it. That coulda left a mark 😂
That starter is for a 168 flexplate
@@daviddaniels6818 maybe wrong tooth count? Not sure but something was off for sure
39 Happy Birthday
Thank ya sir. 36!
He's like ill help u dad!
@@ShadeTreeMechanic8962 he’s a rascal 😂
I should have told you to confirm the length of the bolts you were buying because there’s 3 different length bolts available for small block Chevy starters. Oops.
THANKS A LOT STEVE 😂😂😂
You should buy kobalt 24v power tools they have a great warranty and the power is comparable to the other brands and the price can't be matched.
I’ll have to check that out it thank you!
32:16 official PSI test 😂😂😂
@@mikemech6236 😂😂 hey you know how I do
And we are almost birthday twins?! 😂 Mine was June 22nd... I'm gonna say you're 36 now.. cas that would be even crazier 😂
@@TurbochargedTactics holy crap haha mine was the 20th and I turned 36. What’s up twin haha
@@okspeedshop let's gooooooo 😂😂😂
It’s my daughters bday also
@@ClassicCarRevivals oh cool HBD girl!
If you don't have the brace on the front of the starter that goes to the block that'll cause problems and can break the block too because the starter will turn from the torque
@@drjohnsonhungwell5115 hmmm I don’t know I’m familiar with that? What brace is it?
@@okspeedshop If you look on the front of the starter there's a short threaded rod coming out and if you look up at the block there's a threaded hole in the block and the brace will keep it straight , O'Reilly's probably has it in the performance parts section but I know Summit racing would have it or the local junkyard .
@@okspeedshop The original 350 I had in my 78 K10 had the block broke because the brace was missing but the motor was already bad when I bought it so I just replaced it and I have a military k5 M1009 6.2 diesel that has a 24 volt starter that brace is a must have on that diesel they have 21to 1 compression .
@@okspeedshop Those knurled bolts do help too
Good to know! I’m going to look into this! Thank you!
O'reilly for years, just say starters bad and stand by it.
It’s weird it would not work on that truck but just fine on another Chevy. Oh well alls well that ends well haha
I would try to find a bigger steering wheel . Those little ones can be dangerous .
@@TheCrackerBox yes I hate that thing
you need a starter for a small block before 1986
@@daviddaniels6818 you think it was wrong one?
@@okspeedshop I know it's the wrong one unless you put a 168 tooth flywheel your cylinder heads are not center bolt heads
@@daviddaniels6818 oh is that the way to tell without counting? Good to know!
@@okspeedshop yes you'll also need the correct starter bolts there's a tapered section on the bolt right below the threads that help align the starter
@@daviddaniels6818 thanks a million bro!
I think that 2 into 1 is a fusable link
@@ClassicCarRevivals oh woops so I need to put a fuse back in?
@@okspeedshop if starter sticks it can burn truck up!
@@ClassicCarRevivals ok good to know, I wish I remembered which wires it was, I guess I can fuse them all in that bundle
@@okspeedshop you do have video proof of which ones haha! You could also copy red trucks wires
@@ClassicCarRevivals it just seem like two out of the three were fused and I wasn’t sure which two but I bet I could figure it out! I’m just glad she’s out of the Rocks now! 😆
32 happy birthday
Thank you for the compliment but I’m a little older 😂🥳
Howdy
@@ClassicCarRevivals what’s up pal?
Are your starter wires touching when you dropped it?
@@ClassicCarRevivals I think I decapitated one 😂 plus wasn’t making a good ground connection on the main ground. It was in an ok spot but maybe some rust and definitely not tight enough on either end. All the voltage kept going through the small wire and frying it.
@@okspeedshop that will happen if starter isn’t tight enough!
happy birthday 36?
@@Tannerrebuilds nailed it!!! I owe you a shout out
Still sounds like it’s too far advanced. That’s why when the starter did actually start working, it would randomly stop spinning the engine and then start spinning again.
Awesome so to retard it I spin it clock wise?

@@ShadeTreeMechanic8962 I appreciate that compliment homie 😂 36 big ones.
You have a major exhaust leak. Headers gaskets.
@@natebutash1913 yes I stripped a headed bolt out…gotta put a helicoil in it one day 😭
A lot of times a header leak will sound like a lifter clapping it’s really hard to tell the difference.
@@natebutash1913 yes much rather a header leak haha. I’m about to pop the valve covers and get them all adjusted for a solid lifter cam shaft in the next video
@@okspeedshop Nice I like your Videos I have a third gen Camaro that I’m building. I have been through all the stuff you are learning about. I had a lot of mistakes learning about small blocks and learned a lot about them and what not to do.
@natebutash1913 that’s encouraging. I’m new to everything so just learning through trial and error and documenting the process. It’s a blast and you guys are all such a great and helpful community.
You almost got made special by that starter.
@@1776_Garage HAHAHA YEP
You really need to stop letting that smoke out, it’s real hard tand expensive to put back in
Haha! That’s what I’m figuring out. I’m trying to stop doing it.
If that impact is from harbor freight then it's most likely chinese garbage.
