    I lived in Sydney in 2000 with 4 of these guys, top blokes and today i gave 2 a lift to help with their journey

    30 years ago I was a journeyman carpenter, from Denmark to Italy, from Ireland to Poland, but it's most beautiful at home. I met the nicest people in Ireland, the most hospitable people I met in Italy, but I met the most understandable women and men in Germany. It was an adventure, sometimes bad sometimes more beautiful days full of new experiences that shaped me who I am today am

    Well, there's a little more to the connection of the song and the old German tradition. The guilds to some extent used (and use) a secretive language. It's the language of traders, waltzing craftsmen but also crooks. It's a mixture of German, Jiddish and an old slang called "Rotwelsch". From that language the term "waltz" derives and here it comes: in that slang, the word for the road, the traveller's bride, is "Matilda"... ;)
