I want Sony to make a PlayStation 2 Classic Edition with HDMI, have the ability to read PS2 disc, DVD, CD, PS1 disc, USB wireless rechargeable controller.
You know what's interesting? I worked at Game Crazy during the the 6th generation, and we had a PS2 hooked up to an HDTV via component during a time where most gamers were rocking CRTs with composite, and when customers came in, they complained about the "jagginess" of the display - they actually preferred the softness they were used to! That softness functioned as a sort of anti-aliasing at the time, the "softness" took the digital quality out of it and made folks feel they were playing something organic looking. I know it's crazy, cuz to folks like us, the jagginess is clearly a sign of image integrity, but in the end it's a matter of TASTE. ;)
Back then most folks had no clue about any of this stuff and just figured they'd plug in what was in the box and that was how it was meant to be. I remember when the PS3 first came out one of my friends coming over and freaking out because games looked amazing on mine and crap on his. I went and checked out how his was set up and it turned out he had no clue what an HDMI cable even was and just had plugged his in with a composite cable because that is what came in the PS3 box at launch. He had been using it for quite a while that way even though he had an HDTV like I did. I had a PS2 back when they were the current thing and I didn't even know until recently what a component cable was. I only found out now because I am looking into how to hook up my old system to a current TV/monitor.
The difference is extreme, you're right. He probably doesn't see it clearly because he's using a cheap HDMI converter and an LCD display that's doing a poor job at upscaling the image. Plug that console to a CRT through composite and then component and the difference is shocking.
Correct. The best way to get a ps2 into an HD TV that only has HDMI ports is to get a receiver with component inputs and an HDMI output. The receiver handles all of the scaling and it will do a much better job of it.
Glad you threw a shout out to My Life in Gaming in there. Try and Coury are some of THE go-to guys for output quality for games nowadays and I still rewatch their videos a ton.
One thing i wanna mention: Most TVs, in screen settings, can adjust the screen size to 4:3 manually, so if you're having a stretched signal you can just manually set to 4:3 and you're good to go
I miss my PS2, I remember having the fat one in 2002, had Nightfire 007, NFUS2, GTA Vice City, GTA III, True Crime Streets of LA and New York City. Those days were so much fun
eBay is your best friend. I bought a Ps2 in great condition with all the cords, a memory card, and two controllers for $60. I’m slowly rebuilding my old collection too
I bought a component cable for my PS2 in 2007-2008 (the one that I have to this day, and still works), when my parents bought our first HDTV, and the difference in image compared to composite blew me away back then, but I've been replaying games on my PS2 lately, but after years of HD gaming, going back can be underwhelming, but it's worth it.
I got my fat PS2 on first day of release in the US. My 37" HDTV/Monitor automatically upscales the image to 480P. UPDATE: Got myself an HDMI upscaler for my PS2. Now Final Fantasy 7 looks real good on my 37" HDTV/monitor.
Do note, not all FAT PS3s support PS2 back-compat. Specifically the 80GB model lost it's compatibility later on (I've never seen a 80GB model that does support it, until this video). I know because I had that model, and I ended up swapping it for a 60GB version specifically to get that back-compat. Not sure if this applies to the US, but I know this applies to the UK/EU countries.
g1nobleteam if you jailbreak your ps3 (no matter which model) you can run a big number of ps2 titles in .iso format (you can rip your games from disc to the HDD or pirate the .iso file). I'ts still software emulation so not all games will work but a lot more than the ones you get as ps2 classics from psn.
When it comes to audio/visual cables and stuff, I'm a big dummy. But thanks to you and MyLifeInGaming, I'm slowly learning. Really appreciate the help!
MLIG is a great channel as well. I look up their PS2 video periodically when I tinker around with my PS2's component/composite cables and wonder why my video isn't outputting right/at all on some games. I've since decided that I need to find myself a CRT of some sort since my LCD doesn't like some of the resolutions it tries to push over component. A CRT would also take care of my Duck Hunt itch :p
Yup, yup. Now I'm trying to pull off the magic trick of making space for one (because who wants a small TV for games?), and finding one that has both component and composite inputs that also is still an analog set at 60hz so that light guns will register hits.
I actually just did pick up a 20" Trinitron! Though it's not a WEGA. Also not as large as I'd like, but I'm able to play Duck Hunt and the PS2 looks nice. Can't be too upset with my CL freebie, I suppose :)
I just hooked up my ps2 to component cables and it looked amazing on my HD TV. Highly recommend component cables if you are playing a ps2 on a HD TV. The cables are cheap and the quality is a thousand times better than composite cables.
I was so into my PS2 that I have the RF cord, the regular cord, the component cord, and for a while actually use the S video cord but I already had that cord.
"and in reality there's nothing you can do about it" *presses aspect ratio button on remote* there I did something about it without editing in real time.
I didn't realize I had component cables and one day tried them on my PS2 and it totally changed how I view the games. Everything was sooo blurry before. I also am lucky enough to have a HD tv that has hookups for component cables.
I recently busted out my PS2 to play Silent Hill 2 and 3 and man what a difference a component cable makes. On one hand it sucks to jump through these hoops for those particular games since Konami never put them on the PSN Store but on the other hand I like that genuine PS2 experience again.
Definitely a shame a lot of games have been stuck on old machines, but I'm glad more people are aware that these machines aren't doomed to a blurry mess. I've had friends over the years complain about how bad an N64 hooked up to a 4K display via composite looked lol
Honestly, a really nice HDTV CRT using component video is the way to go. You don't get that jagged look that shows on an LCD and it is better than a regular SDTV CRT due to upscaling 480i to 480p, 480p native ends up looking better, 240p will work and you can play GT4 in 1080i.
Component cables don't split the signal into red, blue, and green, despite what the colour of the connectors suggest. To explain it would be a bit beyond the scope of a UA-cam comment, so, more info here: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/YPbPr
some HDMI converters have better upscaling (for 240p since many modern tv's won't take 240p over hdmi any longer) or better deinterlacing (for 480i) than what is built in. Some even have less lag, but its really hit or miss and you usually are looking at the >$60 converters at that point. But ya, since he said those only converted and didnt upscale, most likely pointless for cheap or moderately priced converters.
I doubt his cheap upscaler does 240p justice. Framemeister does it well. Most PS2 games are 480i anyway. Ico is the only game I know that is still 240p.
Small mistake, the 80 gig model uses partial emulation. It has the ps2 gpu, but not it's cpu, because sony was having trouble emulating it. If it was just full on software emulation they never would have needed to drop backwards compatibility to lower the price. The 20 and 60 gig models have the full ps2 hardware.
They eventually released a full software emulator, but only for PS2 Classics (and your own ISOs, if your console is hacked). Its compatibility is even more limited and some games look a bit different, though.
No, no the changes were not subtle, even through UA-cam. I could see a very clear difference between composite and component cable. In SSX you could see actual leaves on the trees and make out details on the mountains in the background, there was nothing subtle about that. I also want to add, I loved playing my PS2 games on my first generation PS3. We had just bought our first HD TV, and the up-scaling, the smoothing....it was glorious. We did not have a lot of PS3 games at the time, but I still had a TON of PS1 and PS2 games, and they all looked amazing on the PS3. We still have our 60GB PS3, sadly, it needs to be repaired, and I am hoping to do so soon because I want to be rid of our newer PS3, which was fully updated and now no longer plays PS2 games.
I'm glad i found ur video because I could barely play my fat ps2 on my 4k tv because the video quality was always blurry whenever I tried playing nfs underground or any of my old tony hawk games. Since I got the component cables and hd converter everything is much sharp and cleaner for me and now I'm able to enjoy my old games again, so big thanks to you.
perfect dark is still my #1 console FPS shooter ,it was way ahead of its time for a console shooter ,it amplified what goldeneye was and for it to be that detailed for a 2000 ageing console game is amazing, the fact u can shoot out weapons from their hands and weapon modes and unique level design the cyber punk music and theme the fact lights are dynamic ,objects in the game are malleable u shoot at a l ight it actually does go out ( and u got modern shit like BF and COD that has ZERO interaction of the environment and them games cost 100 million to make lmao !
You know, my brother have a tv LG with soap opera effect (that effect that things seen a little bit faster) and i connect my PS2 with composite cables (not component) and looks awesome, i played resident evil 4 and looks pretty good, it looks like the remaster versión, i try other games and also looks amazing.
Component actually doesn't send RED GREEN BLUE colours. The actual signals sent are a little more complex, but makes sense once you look at the specs. Either way, Component is a game changer in terms of video quality.
60GB CECHA01 PS3s have full PS2 support. Get one of those and then put a 1TB 2.5" HDD (I used a HDD from a PS4) in it. You'll be able to play all the PS1, PS2, and PS3 games you want!
Yep, the 20 and 80 only have the PS2 CPU on board as far as I know. The 60GB launch edition has 2 CPUs and 2 GPUs on board. They are prone to failure due to a law making the developers use lead-free solder which can be ruined overtime. I think that's why most CECHA01 PS3s are rare because so many people got the YLOD.
I reccomend buying a CECH2001A slim model because they are very reliable. You can install MultiMan through an exploit and play SNES, NES, GBA, Genesis, PS1, PS3, and even some PSP / PS2 games from a USB. I'd also just buy a fat model PS2 and mod it with FreeMcboot to play all of your PS2 games.
I'm so glad you showed how PS2 games look on a PS3. I was on the fence whether I wanted to get an original PS3 that was hardware backwards compatible, or if I just wanted to keep my PS2 and leave it hooked up via component (and TOSLINK optical audio to my receiver.) I was playing the first God of War game the other day and it looks and sounds great. One thing about your video I don't get, though: There is an option in the PS2 system settings to set the picture at 16:9 and it's not stretched, so why not just do that?
Joe Ward ps3 (slim versions 2012) are the best value. Best catalog of games. And very useable as a media player for streaming and disc and mp4 playback. 99% of time we use them as a streaming device. Not bad for a 12 year old console.
if is a fully retrocompatible PS3, I'd say yes. More than 20 years of gaming, three generations, three leading platforms. Thousands of games and collecting for PS2 and PS3 it's still easy and cheap. PS1 is becoming more expensive but still acceptable.
Ya, thats my "desert island" console since it officially spans 3 generations if you get a BC one (assuming mods/CFW /hacks and third party clones are out of consideration). The big question is handhelds: Vita, N3DS, DSlite or GBA SP-101?
Joe Ward It was expensive as hell, but if you managed to get a PS2 compatible one then yes it was. Bluray, CD player, DVD player, retro compatibility with PS1 and PS2, free online play and internet browser...then it got Crackle/Netflix (all that stuff).
Depends on what you want. The PS3 and Xbox360 can be found at around the same price, it's your preference that makes you want one console more than the other. The video series from TechnoBuffalo called "Xbox360 vs. PS3" explain what each console is capable of, which might help you decide for yourself if you weren't in the consoles before. Of course, if you don't have the money to buy PS4 or XboxOne, that is. IMHO, I prefer the PlayStation consoles, especially PS3, since I played every console prior to PS3, and got one on May last year, cost me around 170$. 320GB Slim version (used rarely, and well preserved, almost new), with probably latest CFW at the time, plus two Dualshock 3 controllers on top of all that, best deal ever found.
Thanks to this video i bought a component cable for my old ps2 to test the difference, it was like night and day.....it's like new now 😯... danke, gracias 😀
on most hd tvs you can change your "video size" to force a 4:3 aspect ratio with will help a little with that component to hdmi stretching with those cheap boxes
Black is one of the most underrated games of all time. Fantastic fps with some really innovative features. Plus it looked damn beautiful on the PS2 being halfway through it's lifespan.
Some points: Hi, I just want to point out some misleading info in your video. You say Component splits the video into three signals: red, green and blue. But it's actually luma (Y, like a greyscale picture) and two signal for color selection. It's still three signals and looks just as good as RGB. Also, Component is strictly better than SCART-RGB, since it supports 480p, while SCART-RGB only does 480i. 480i only sends half the picture each frame (even and odd lines alternating), so 480p sends 480 lines, 60 times per second, while 480i only sends 240 lines every 60th of a second, which means 480p using Component has double the bandwidth and will look better, if the game supports it.
RGB SCART does give a better picture than component, but not by too much. It's not the massive jump in quality like it is going from composite to component. My whole gaming room is mostly component (or HDMI for the more recent consoles i.e. Xbox 360 and up) but I'd love to get all my old consoles working over RGB SCART, it's just too expensive though for me to invest like that and I'm very happy with how component looks.
SCART is actually capable of carrying a 480p signal and actually up to a 1080i signal just like component and VGA, it's just that the SCART ports on TV's and devices weren't built to accept it. A lot of modern devices that use SCART though, like the FrameMeister, OSSC, the TORO Dremacast VGA / RGB box etc. allow higher res signals to be sent over SCART. I currently use A TORO to force a 480p VGA signal through SCART as at the time, it was the only way to hook up a Dreamcast to a FrameMeister without losing the ability to play games at 480p.
I believe you can actually get a PS2 to run at 480p, 720p and 1080i through SCART via "Sync on green" if you have an OSSC or a PVM that supports it and it actually looks a little better than it does through component.
Another interesting point is europe standard for composite is much higher quality than NTSC composite. PAL composite looks almost as good as S-video (couldn't believe it the first time I have found out about it).
MidnightBanshi baby that thing. It will brink its a matter of time. Vacuum and dust spray it monthly. Consider having the system worked on get new thermal paste. Back up the data!
Mine is going strong as well *knock on wood*, then again it now has fans blowing air in and out of it and I keep it relatively dust free. I also let it sit on the home screen to cool down after playing a game. Also, I keep it horizontal and when I did put it vertical, I made sure to have some USB fans on it to pull hot air out of the exhaust vents. I've been tempted to do new thermal paste or reflow solder, but since it hasn't acted up yet, I figured I'd probably kickstart issues by doing so and have just left it alone with my current preventative steps.
Read up on some mods on how to keep it cool. Swapping in later PS3 model PSU's that were more efficient and didn't give off as much heat, modern thermal paste and a better cooling fan combined with drilling a few holes in the bottom plastic shell to let it breathe in more air. Doing all of that should keep it running much much longer. Heat is the main issue. The heat could get so bad in those early PS3's that it could cause the solder connecting the chips to the board to liquefy and shift killing the PS3. Then only reballing will save it and if you are at that stage you are only delaying it's permanent death. So if you put in some effort to turn down the heat you can eliminate the systems main point of failure.
Emulation works if you already have a somewhat decent PC and monitor (it can also NATIVELY run at any resolution you want) Works especially well when you have a controller.
I've been meaning to do this to my Xbox too but not sure. Somethings telling me to leave it how it was back when I was playing the PS2. I do play it now here n there of course too. Awesome video mate!!! Might look into it......
Component is the best bet on Xbox since most games were at least 480p and up to 1080i. Well, them expanding Xbox backwards compatibility on the Xbox One is really the best bet. Its also great if you get scratched discs that normally skip on a Xbox or 360 console since the XB1 downloads the game and really just needs to read the header info to validate it when launching the game. My scratched Crimson Skies works great on my XB1 even though it skips/stutters on my Xbox.
Man, the fat 80gb PS3 model that had that upscaler and smoother for PS2 games is unreal. Shame on Sony for not embracing the preservation of Playstation games for the later consoles like PS4 and PS5.
I tried it with the component cables only and it worked like a dream! Thanks dude!!!... This video helped a lot. Now I'm able to play my favorite system of all time in my HD Tv.
To be honest the PS2 was meant for CRT tv's and the games look best on an old Sony Trinitron or some other quality television. I have a PS2 hooked to my LG 1080p with component, but everything looks so coarse because of the low resolution it's very hard on the eyes and ended up playing PS2 games on an emulator on my PC.
*Touch Wood* I've had My 60GB PS3 since 2007 and it still works perfectly. Never had a problem with it up to now but I bed that hdd isn't far from it's death now.
I played the wii version of that tombraider game. That moment where you enter this long room towards the beginning of the game with the bear scared the hell out of me. Honestly though the origonal Saturn tomb raider still gives me chills like few games do.
Number one problem with component cables on the Ps2 is you have to switch back to composite if you want to play PS1 games and use the PlayStations 2 backwards compatibility
I have both a Composite and a Component for the ps2. If I get into a nostalgic mood, I play the ps2 on an old tv with a composite. If I feel like playing with higher quality, I play the ps2 on my smarttv with the component cable.
And I have to also have component and composite cables, because I have all the light gun games plus Time Crisis 1 and Point Blank, and as we all know those don't play on the newer TVs. But having two 42-inch TVs next to each other with each player having their own perspective like the arcade is just priceless!
The 60GB PS3. Those were the days. Can't believe I missed out on the otherOS lawsuit that was just settled. I remember using the backwards compatibility as well as running Linux distros on it.
I still have my 60gb PS3. It stopped working a few years ago, been meaning to getting around to getting it fixed. You mentioned that the early PS3 models where prone to overheating. Don't think that is the case. There has recently been a re-exam of the notorious Ylod for the console. And it turns out that it's not the widely suspected solder joint on the CPU/GPU but actually notoriously faulty NEC/tokken capacitors. Just wish I knew how to solder, so I could fix it. But it's a much easier solution than the original, of reballing the GPU/CPU.
It’s actually due to the rsx failing most of the time I have gotten two ylod ps3s back alive after having someone replace the rsx with the ps3 slim 40nm one
Blows my mind you didn't choose Silent Hill 2 to test out. WOW! I'm looking into this just to play that ONE PS2 game I didn't sell off. That is how valuable this game is to me as it's the best version out of all of them - even PC. The graphics of SH2 were the best on PS2 as it was made for that console. Very eager to test it out using these converters.
Metaljesus - I connect my PS2 with component cables to my Sony Brevia 48" and the 480p PS2 games look AWESOME. I don't think a lot of people realize that there are almost 200 PS2 games with game option to enable 480p. The PS2 Sega Genesis collection can be enabled for 480p so you can play Golden Axe 1, 2, 3 in HD quality. For flat screens under 55" most people cannot see difference between 480p and 720p
You should use an RGB scart from RetroGamingCable on your ps2, then connect the console to an OSSC upscaler and output the signal through a MCable (Marseille Inc.) in RGsB Bob Mode...
Hi. I just purchased one of these thinking I am set now, then I read all about these boxes, so am I wrong in thinking that if I wack the cable I just bought into my HD TV directly that's it job done or not? Please get back to me. Thanks
LOL didn't even mention the best way / classic way. Component cable + HD boot disk, you can play real 720p/1080p directly from the PS2 with no modding. I replayed FF12 and some other games a few year's ago using that method and it worked perfectly.
What's HD Boot? The only results I'm finding are Free Hard Drive Boot. (Which you have to softmod for to my knowledge.) Is it the same thing or something else?
Component on CRT looks better but not by much. S-video is a nice step above composite, but depending on tv size the difference isn't always that noticeable (under 24" and under probably won't notice drastically).
That's American perspective, in Europe the best solution for sd tv is rgb, but as I said, for me s-video is better for PS2 because it gives sharper picture than rgb. The latter is more suited for PS1 though and 2d consoles.
It's funny the whole video I was like "just get a ps3" and it's literally one of the things you suggested. And also something cool, if you have HFW on a ps3 slim or super slim you can still play a large majority of ps2 games by downloading them and running them through the built in ps2 classics emulator on all the ps3's, but I understand not everyone wants to do that, and there's no problem with that. I actually have a slim and 40gb fat myself, just so I can play discs if I want
Just what I was thinking for my PS2. I didn't know until last week that the old PS3 plays PS1 games! And now I've learned it plays PS2 as well, which is excellent. Albeit I just spent £100 on an old PS2 and a lot of games. I have two old PS3s I could have used if I had known, though I wouldnt have had all those games I got with the PS2. Good for the collection though. Keep it Metal and thank you \m/
So, is it uncommon to have played pretty much everything on SCART? Starting with the SNES and Mega Drive and all the way up to PS2 and Gamecube I've always used those cables, thought the games looked great on that. Heck, I even got an old CRT TV with 3 SCART connectors specifically for my old consoles a few years ago. Edit:"...mostly used in Europe." Ahh. That explains it.
FYI, if your modern TV has RCA In or Component In, then you shouldn't buy converter. because the TV itself has decent built-in analog signal to digital signal converter. but if you're using HDMI Monitor, Modern TV without RCA/Component in (but most modern TV still has RCA and Component in) or your TV rendering sucks, then this is the best solution for you. great video, btw.
I remember ruining my composite cable as a kid and my parents got me a component cable and that's where I discovered how much better is was, especially back then before HDMI. Great video!
That's lucky
@redfield6239 well when your parents are start getting older they wouldn't really know about that. For example my parents didn't know that my WWF no mercy game had that atrocious game bug.

The sixth console generation was beyond amazing. Dreamcast, PS2, GameCube and Xbox.
Not a single one was bad
True that, it also birthed some amazing franchises on all of the consoles.
Agreed
Can't forget about the gba. That whole generation had the best games and consoles.
Absolutely!!! The last great era of gaming for me, before everything was “eye candy.” That era had great graphics with even better gameplay
You know what's interesting? Ps2 Remaster + all the games remake
Idk man, to me the difference between Component and Composite is extreme and incredibly noticeable. Huge difference
Convert PS2 signal at 576p with GSM homebrew (the quality will be even better).
The difference is extreme, you're right. He probably doesn't see it clearly because he's using a cheap HDMI converter and an LCD display that's doing a poor job at upscaling the image. Plug that console to a CRT through composite and then component and the difference is shocking.
Found the guy who disliked the video
One awesome feature of the PS2, you'll never run out of games to play!
Retro Game Players lol true
Thats how i feel about a lot of older consoles tbh
Retro Game Players PS1 and PS2.. soooo many games not enough time
J Runn especially since a lot of their libraries are a BUNCH of rpgs which are already time consuming themselves
That is very true!
One thing i wanna mention: Most TVs, in screen settings, can adjust the screen size to 4:3 manually, so if you're having a stretched signal you can just manually set to 4:3 and you're good to go
100%. I keep seeing people complaining about the stretched signal but almost every TV can switch display size.
I’m slowly rebuilding my old collection too
The video I've been waiting for! Thanks for putting this together dude.
Radical Reggie I'm a bit surprised you didn't do it first
I bought a component cable for my PS2 in 2007-2008 (the one that I have to this day, and still works), when my parents bought our first HDTV, and the difference in image compared to composite blew me away back then, but I've been replaying games on my PS2 lately, but after years of HD gaming, going back can be underwhelming, but it's worth it.
In the PS2 menu and also in games, there's usually an aspect ratio setting. Change it to 16:9 when running fullscreen, and it won't look stretched.
This is next level intellect.
Most HDTVS let you change the picture size.
I change mine from 16:9 to 4:3 and it helps to clean up the blur since that's what most CRTV were.
I got my fat PS2 on first day of release in the US.
My 37" HDTV/Monitor automatically upscales the image to 480P.
UPDATE:
Got myself an HDMI upscaler for my PS2.
Now Final Fantasy 7 looks real good on my 37" HDTV/monitor.
Note: I bought my fat PS3 on first day of release, too. It was an 80GB unit, that I've upgraded with a 500GB hard drive.
It must feel really cool to own one of these at that time.
Did the hdmi upscaler make a huge difference?

Does the component adapter work for 4K smart tv’s. I’m referring to the adapter shown in this video
What upscaler did you buy?
"composite the lowest possible quality"
but RF can be done with the PS2.
Scientists were so preoccupied with it they could, they didnt stop to ask if they should. That's all I have to say about RF.
I beat san Andreas using composite to rf as a kid
I used RF once on my original Xbox on my great grandma's black and white TV for shizangiggles.
my ps2 is still using rf lol, hooked up to the same ancient GE tv is was originally hooked to in 2002.
@@brysonshires9742 my brother beat Snake Eater on hard with a Mad Catz rf cable
Do note, not all FAT PS3s support PS2 back-compat. Specifically the 80GB model lost it's compatibility later on (I've never seen a 80GB model that does support it, until this video). I know because I had that model, and I ended up swapping it for a 60GB version specifically to get that back-compat. Not sure if this applies to the US, but I know this applies to the UK/EU countries.
Madness1 you are correct. For the 80GB model if it has 4 USB ports in the front it is compatible. If it only has 2 then it is not.
I bought my 80gb model because it was backward compatible and I didn't want to loose access to my ps2/ps1 library.
The ps3 slim can play ps1 games, digital or retail (unsure on compatibly), as for PS2 it plays ps2 classics only via digital that you get off psn.
g1nobleteam if you jailbreak your ps3 (no matter which model) you can run a big number of ps2 titles in .iso format (you can rip your games from disc to the HDD or pirate the .iso file). I'ts still software emulation so not all games will work but a lot more than the ones you get as ps2 classics from psn.
You are very correct
When it comes to audio/visual cables and stuff, I'm a big dummy. But thanks to you and MyLifeInGaming, I'm slowly learning. Really appreciate the help!
MLIG is a great channel as well. I look up their PS2 video periodically when I tinker around with my PS2's component/composite cables and wonder why my video isn't outputting right/at all on some games. I've since decided that I need to find myself a CRT of some sort since my LCD doesn't like some of the resolutions it tries to push over component. A CRT would also take care of my Duck Hunt itch :p
thegreatboto - a CRT is pretty much mandatory.
Yup, yup. Now I'm trying to pull off the magic trick of making space for one (because who wants a small TV for games?), and finding one that has both component and composite inputs that also is still an analog set at 60hz so that light guns will register hits.
I recommend early Trinitron WEGAs, they have component, and well, its freakin' Trinitron!
I actually just did pick up a 20" Trinitron! Though it's not a WEGA. Also not as large as I'd like, but I'm able to play Duck Hunt and the PS2 looks nice. Can't be too upset with my CL freebie, I suppose :)
I bet Burnout will look even more real with HDMI because it already look real with AV cable
After that I immediately ordered the component cable. Thanks!
Vacaboy I did the same thing it fucking made my games look like ps3 games
Gran turismo 4 was the pinnacle of Ps2
Cuou
it wont boot on my old Fat PS2 :(
1080i trough component is just umbelievable
Agreed
3 was better imo
I just hooked up my ps2 to component cables and it looked amazing on my HD TV. Highly recommend component cables if you are playing a ps2 on a HD TV. The cables are cheap and the quality is a thousand times better than composite cables.
I just picked up some component cables this past weekend for NFL2K5 and the game looks great on my 4K HD tv.
I was so into my PS2 that I have the RF cord, the regular cord, the component cord, and for a while actually use the S video cord but I already had that cord.
A very ludicrous parakeet I got the ps2 hdmi converter. Since need one usb can’t play two players I never try it using power adapter 8.99 lol
"and in reality there's nothing you can do about it"
*presses aspect ratio button on remote*
there I did something about it without editing in real time.
My tv won't let me change the aspect ratio with hdmi devices.
TheKHfan358over3d but you stretched the image
I’m using a monitor myself, and unless the signal is under 720p it forces it into 16:9. Which most composite upscalers convert it to 720p or higher.
Good to know! Thanks
Yup. Green cable is sync. Besides, most TVs still has component input so I'm not sure what is the point in getting an HDMI converter.
some HDMI converters have better upscaling (for 240p since many modern tv's won't take 240p over hdmi any longer) or better deinterlacing (for 480i) than what is built in. Some even have less lag, but its really hit or miss and you usually are looking at the >$60 converters at that point.
But ya, since he said those only converted and didnt upscale, most likely pointless for cheap or moderately priced converters.
It was the first thing I thought when he said it and sure enough someone beat me to the comment!
I have been using the ps3 componenet cable for my ps2. It's a couple bucks.
3rd party or official Sony ones? 3rd party cheap cables can have issues, branded ones are a safe bet but more expensive.
Torgo Gorgo official! I know its not hi def but i was trying to get rid of the blur that comes with RYW cables
Luchador Beaux Wut? They usually go for $40 and up online. Where did u get yours?
I got it online but it was a few years back. Figured they would be cheaper now. :(
Luchador Beaux they are SUPER cheap
aye jesus your mid section is lookin slimmer bro, keep it up mah man
Black has to be one of the best FPS ever made. I wish they'd make another version of it.
Replaying it this week, I was really reminded of those early Call of Duty: Black Ops games... but yeah, a new Black game would be killer.
Man, I use to play the mess of Black on Ps2 years ago.
perfect dark is still my #1 console FPS shooter ,it was way ahead of its time for a console shooter ,it amplified what goldeneye was and for it to be that detailed for a 2000 ageing console game is amazing, the fact u can shoot out weapons from their hands and weapon modes and unique level design the cyber punk music and theme the fact lights are dynamic ,objects in the game are malleable u shoot at a l ight it actually does go out ( and u got modern shit like BF and COD that has ZERO interaction of the environment and them games cost 100 million to make lmao !
its back compat. on xbox one
My dad gave me that game but never played it.I’ll have to try it out
You know, my brother have a tv LG with soap opera effect (that effect that things seen a little bit faster) and i connect my PS2 with composite cables (not component) and looks awesome, i played resident evil 4 and looks pretty good, it looks like the remaster versión, i try other games and also looks amazing.
Lucky bitch
Component actually doesn't send RED GREEN BLUE colours. The actual signals sent are a little more complex, but makes sense once you look at the specs. Either way, Component is a game changer in terms of video quality.
A tear ran down my cheek when I saw SSX 3 as one of the titles in the stack
Love me some THICC PS2 .
Fat PS2s are great. They're compatible with hard drives and they will never scratch discs, unlike slim PS2s.
They're the best for modding

60GB CECHA01 PS3s have full PS2 support. Get one of those and then put a 1TB 2.5" HDD (I used a HDD from a PS4) in it. You'll be able to play all the PS1, PS2, and PS3 games you want!
So the 20 and 80 gig doesnt have full compatability.? I'll rememeber you because I wamt to do the samr
It's something he probably just overlooked.
Is PS3 the best value for money ever released? Playing the "If you could only have one console" discussion.

This channel is awesome! I love playing video games especially older games like Xbox 360, ps2, etc.
Some points:
Hi, I just want to point out some misleading info in your video.
You're also wrong. Scart-RGB supports up to 1080p, just not on the PS2...
It's one of the big reasons why I went to get the 60GB PS3 was the hardware compatability. Fingers crossed, it hasn't bricked on me yet! Cool video!
Unlike the 360, the PS3 issue is easier to fix and re-occurs less often.
MidnightBanshi good luck with that.
Better off getting component cables and they're not ridiculously priced
and being that sony didn't change connectors each system and also used it on there DVD players, its easy to grab a cable from anywhere new
That leap from composite to 1080i on Gran Turismo 4 is like going from PS2 to PS3. That's wild.
Emulation works if you already have a somewhat decent PC and monitor (it can also NATIVELY run at any resolution you want)
Works especially well when you have a controller.
"It's stretched out on your TV and there's really nothing you can do about it."

Now I'm able to play my favorite system of all time in my HD Tv.

you made me wanna play the PS2, will get it ready for tonight 😎
To be honest the PS2 was meant for CRT tv's and the games look best on an old Sony Trinitron or some other quality television.
I have a PS2 hooked to my LG 1080p with component, but everything looks so coarse because of the low resolution it's very hard on the eyes and ended up playing PS2 games on an emulator on my PC.
._. ps2 emulator has alot of bugs
Looks better on a plasma. LCD LED and newer looks like shit
I have a consumer Panasonic CRT from 2002 with component and the PS2 is great. Dragon Quest VIII looks so good.
I would recommend component. It's a huge improvement over composite, and it's not expensive.
*Touch Wood*
I've had My 60GB PS3 since 2007 and it still works perfectly. Never had a problem with it up to now but I bed that hdd isn't far from it's death now.
I literally just picked up an old PS3 today at a yardsale (for free btw) just to upscale my Ps2 games. That’s hilarious
Free?! I waited a full year to find one on Craigslist for under $100... that's amazing.
I recommend you open it clean it and maybe put new thermal paste so the graphics card doesn't get damaged it happened to me

I purchased a £6 HDMI adapter for my PS2 from AMAZON, you are right it nearly bankrupted me.
2:25
Most TVs have a 4:3 option that you can activate in the menu. I do this for a lot of my consoles.
We need to hang again man....for real ❤️
Superhero Game Squad you don’t know him personally
I have both a Composite and a Component for the ps2. If I get into a nostalgic mood, I play the ps2 on an old tv with a composite. If I feel like playing with higher quality, I play the ps2 on my smarttv with the component cable.
And I have to also have component and composite cables, because I have all the light gun games plus Time Crisis 1 and Point Blank, and as we all know those don't play on the newer TVs. But having two 42-inch TVs next to each other with each player having their own perspective like the arcade is just priceless!
6:08 that’s what my older bro should learn.

Fact 🎯
Thank you for this video!
Are those NEC capacitors easy to come by?
It’s actually due to the rsx failing most of the time I have gotten two ylod ps3s back alive after having someone replace the rsx with the ps3 slim 40nm one
Blows my mind you didn't choose Silent Hill 2 to test out. WOW! I'm looking into this just to play that ONE PS2 game I didn't sell off. That is how valuable this game is to me as it's the best version out of all of them - even PC. The graphics of SH2 were the best on PS2 as it was made for that console. Very eager to test it out using these converters.
Shove it up your butt no one cares :)
I have one of those cables - so well made, and great picture.
Hi. I just purchased one of these thinking I am set now, then I read all about these boxes, so am I wrong in thinking that if I wack the cable I just bought into my HD TV directly that's it job done or not? Please get back to me. Thanks
You should see my video this topic to understand. Search PS2 RGB with OSSC & Mcable on google
Yeah, I’ve been using S-Video with my PS2
But the again, I use it with a CRT TV
by far the best solution imo. S-Video gives sharpest image, although some will say that rgb scart is better, but again, not that sharp as s-video.
Sadly I only have one S-Video input in my CRT TV. Which I am running an HP tower for arcade MAME.
Component on CRT looks better but not by much. S-video is a nice step above composite, but depending on tv size the difference isn't always that noticeable (under 24" and under probably won't notice drastically).
S-Video is what I use on my 24" Panasonic tv set, and it's so nice. I also have my Wii and original Xbox connected as well,
That's American perspective, in Europe the best solution for sd tv is rgb, but as I said, for me s-video is better for PS2 because it gives sharper picture than rgb.
Keep it Metal and thank you \m/
everytime someone says Composite is the worst quality you can get from a PS2
VCRs with Composite to RF output: "Am I a joke to you?"
Yeah I ended up in the PAL lands. So I have a PS2 with scart cable. My flatscreen had a scart adapter that is now on the fritz.
I have the 60gb ps3 but I put in a bigger hard drive and it never overheated yet.
My TV has composite, but no component, and there's a pretty vast quality difference to my eyes, even in games that only run in 480i.
Excellent video as always. I just might have to fire up my PS2 again after all these years.
