brann dailor steambreather prog progressive metal leviathan - Розваги
Here's the problem with single song Mastodon reactions: Mastodon is very conceptual in nature and tell intricate stories across an entire album. While the Mastofans have favorites it is important to listen to a full Mastodon album to really have an appreciation for their sound.
McPidgeon or better...
suggest more surface stuff like Blood and Thunder or Black Tongue.
McPidgeo
Since day one on every rock/metal reaction channel people have been making sugestions like " MY FAVORITE COMPLEX TECHNICAL EXTREME BAND- AN 15 MIN ODD SONG" and then go apeshit if the reactioner ( i guess this is a word) didn't apreciatte somenthing on the first time hearing this new genre, which he was never introduced before, like the guy who suggested the song and been listen to this type of music for years.
Afterall Mastodon is my third or fourth favorite band but it took some months to me fully apreciate "Crack the Skye"
I have nothing against the reaction itself. Just wanted to mention that it takes some time to fully appreciate the band as a whole.
I like the sound of that. Might actually go out of my way to listen to an album of theirs. Even though usually a band has to really impress me with some individual songs before I sit down for an album, I might be making an exception if what you say is true.
The drummer Brann Dailor lost his sister Skye to suicide, the whole album is kind of a tribute to her, the album title is Crack The Skye, but you should definitely look deeper in to that album too the whole concept behind it is awesome.
Bingo! The album is truly a masterpiece. Alex's comments at the end make sense about not really having a feel for them after these two tracks. Each Mastodon album are their own individual experiences. They all have a distinct sound and feel to them. With that said, Alex should still check out The Motherload.
Human Absurdity I just went back and listened to the whole CTS album and it still holds up, I don't know maybe they're a band that are kinda lost on the newer generations I know when it first came out I was starved for music like this, as part of the Scuzz generation were subjected to the likes of Metalcore, Emo etc. I know we had the NWOAHM stuff and so much Scandinavian Metal to devour and all that but nothing sounded like Mastodon, when every other band wore their inspirations on their sleeve Mastodon just sounded like Mastodon and it was so necessary...and of course maybe they're just not his thing and it's bound to happen that bands won't be...but I agree more Mastodon is a thing that should happen on this channel!! wouldn't mind seeing him react to Colony Of Birchmen
Honestly I think Mastodon has something for everyone. It something that just grows on you. I remember listening to The Hunter and Once More Round the Sun and at first not caring for it because Crack the Skye was so amazing, but then eventually I'd be jamming out to their songs in my head at work.
Crack the Skye and The Last Baron are the best tracks on the album
Probably a top 3 all-time album for me from any genre
The drummer Brann Dailor lost his sister, this whole album is about her
Unicornkiss I think she took her life didn't she?
Yes. Suicide, sadly.
It's called "Crack the SKYE" for a reason.
Kamil Bujak I know she died but I didn't know how..
Skye was the name of his sister
Mastodon is a perfect storm of 4 ridiculously talented musicians, with the highest level of ambition to push the envelope. They are, quite simply, the best that has happened to metal since 2000, maybe along with gojira....
Try perhaps motherload, a more straight forward song
Hessel van der kooij Motherload would be great just to see his reaction to the video for it lol
A new one to do would be Jaguar God
Enslaved going prog too!
Mastodon is a "listen to the album" style band. You get into a groove and the songs begin to mean more when they're in context. That said, if you're not into the sound for some reason, these songs are pretty representative of what the band does.
This. Started liking them after months when I really dug into the entire albums. Oh Mastodon is such a beautiful journey. Wish I could start it again!
Cemetery Gates - Pantera
Nikolay Jovanovic R.I.P Vinnie Paul😢😢😢😢😢😢😢
Honestly it takes a little time to get into mastodon and also it’s hard to get an opinion since every album is completely different. It took me a couple month to actually start liking them.
Joseph Harris At first I wasn't really into metal or prog but I liked a couple songs so I made a youtube playlist and just put a bunch of random songs I found and kept listening to them.
Eventually I ended up with 3 of their CD's and I plan on getting more
I couldn't stand them at first. Now they're my favorite metal band since 2010 I believe.
Couldn't agree more sir! I feel the best band progressing today. 🤘
Them and Stoned Jesus are really similar in that way too
I don't know... I was introduced to them during a festival, live concert, and I was with some friends who had also never heard any of their stuff, we all just looked at each other after a few minutes and went "Are you listening to this? This is fucking awesome!" Most people were there for Slayer but I was really happy to discover a great band when I honestly wasn't expecting to.
You're too good to us Alex. TWO Mastodon songs in a row. They're like the wine of the metal world. Really needs to grow on ya
Liam Jorgensen no joke as I read this I am sippin on some red wine...
well said
Live at the Brixton Album was the cherry on top. Spectrelight...Jeeezus Christ that song!!
Mastodon - Cold Dark Place
That song is way too underrated.
I got a couple Mastodon songs that i believe you'll like more on a personal level. "Asleep in the Deep", or "Steambreather". Definitely worth a listen.
Toes to Toes, Motherload, High Road, Sultan’s Curse, Show Yourself, and Curl of the Burl are all Mastodon songs that would be more to Alex’s liking.
"Toe to Toes" by Mastodon would be perfect for you, it's catchy from the first listen, other than most of their songs. And has amazing videoclip. Cheers, bro!
And it's probably Brent's most emotional singing.
@@JamesShore1990 Toe to Toes is a must!
Cold Dark Place is better in my opinion but Toe to Toes is really good too.
an amazing and underrated band is Protest The Hero. Incredibly talented band and their newest stuff is soo well composed together. should check out Tidal it's a great track.
Yes! Don’t see a whole lot of people talk about them, but PTH is sick
Hey cool profile pic
Bloodmeat... Love at a first listen!
Once they got to actually singing, three of the four guys in the band sing now, and they all switch up who is doing the lead singing in songs, and they just sound so great now. This is the sound (though not the album) that got them a Grammy. Show Yourself, Steambreather, The Motherload, High Road and Curl of the Burl are some of their best singles, and stuff that's gotten played on mainstream and heritage rock radio stations, would highly recommend those, though they got a bit of flak from some people on Show Yourself cause it's a bit poppy, I think it's still a great song, and it's a fun as hell video.
all of the songs you listed are much better than blood and thunder and oblivion to suggest someone for their first time listening to this band
I don't get why people shit on Show Yourself, it's a great song and the chorus and guitar solo sound very much like classic Mastodon
yeah i quite like steambreather.
Steambreather is such a good song, and the video is trippy as hell. I actually really like Precious Stones off of that same album. I feel like it's got a little bit of everything that makes Mastodon great, and it doesn't wander off on weird musical detours (which I personally love, but probably throw some people). It's just a nice, tight package with a killer solo, awesome vocals, and some of the best drumming on Emperor of Sand. Nobody ever suggests it for stuff like this, though.
John Johnson - It's because metalheads are hipsters. It's "too mainstream" or "too radio friendly" or something. Show Yourself isn't my favorite song off of Emperor, but that's just because there are a bunch of other songs that kick so much ass on that album, not because Show Yourself is bad.
Pantera -- Floods please!!!!!
I understand your reaction completely. Mastodon really isn't "easy listening", I had to listen to Crack the Skye multiple times before I could even say I liked it. But I think that is the mark of great music, if you like it instantly, after hearing it a few times you will stop liking it. After I fell in love with this album at age fifteen, I still listen to it regularly at age 23. Nothing else has come close yet and I don't think it will. It is the complexity, the polyrythms, the breaks in harmony and style that make this music harder to listen to but also much more interesting at the same time. But I admit, it is not for everybody. Keep up the great work! Cheers from Germany.
I feel like you will love Rust In Peace by Megadeth. You probably do already.
Mastodon- anything off crack the sky album :)
Love? - Strapping Young Lad
Aerials - System of a Down
Waking the demon - BFMV
Deadhead(live at Royal Albert hall) - Devin Townsend project
Yes the double upload is back to back! Cheers Alex and please react to Machine Head - Halo in the foreseeable future!
I think Mastodon is one of those bands that not everybody is going to like, but it also takes most people a lot of listens to get their head around. I also think their latest album, Emperor of Sand, might grab you more than some of their earlier stuff. It's really well written and produced, but I think most of the songs are more immediately accessible. It's got a few of those weird, epic songs that Mastodon is known for, but it's also got several songs that are just really good rock songs all by themselves. I'm thinking of Sultan's Curse, Precious Stones, and Steambreather most of all. A lot of people suggest Show Yourself, which I think is a good song, but it doesn't really sound much like Mastodon to me. More like Mastodon doing a really good impression of Queens of the Stone Age or something.
Agreed. Ive noticed it can kinda hard to vibe songs if you dont know where the album is going. Also heavily agree that Sultans Curse is the best album for new lister to start with, a hands down AMAZING piece of work.
Ghost - Cirice
I'm going to see Mastodon today!
My Own Grave by As I Lay Dying!
Joshua Hernandez Personally I think he needs to hear some OG AILD, look into what happened, then listen to My Own Grave. Such a crazy, complicated, deep story that really makes My Own Grave that much better. The song and video give me goosebumps but IDK if it would have the same affect if it was my first intro to the band.
Adam Maciejewski very true. Well in that case Through Struggle gets my vote.
Certainly not a bad choice. There's a ton of great songs he could choose from.
Listen to Floods by Pantera. Do it for Vinnie, and for Dime.
Calle Johansson THIS! YES!
That chorus itself is what got me into Mastodon and eventually a ton of metal sub genres. Couldn’t imagine what would’ve happened if I never heard this song.
the song is about Brann's (the drummer) sister, she took her own life and they named the album in honor of her
Mastodon - March Of The Fire Ants
Alexander P. Schildknecht personally i like specterlight or megalodon
or Mother Puncher ... but either way - since he likes drums so much - he needs to listen to that whole album eventually anyway. Cuz... Brann is insane on those early albums.
Johnny101 / stljohnny Totally agree!
March was my first exposure to Mastodon, thinking the drummer looked awfully familiar. I was right, as Brann (and Bill) were in local Rochester NY bands before moving to Atlanta and forming Mastodon. Great to see local artists find success!
Machine Head - Locust
Devin Townsend - Kingdom (Live at EMGtv)
My favourite band! Basically, every album is really different so you gotta try all of them! The album that got me into them was Once More Round The Sun which is definitely more accessible.. It took me a while to see the beauty of Crack the Skye but it really is a masterpiece (Especially The Czar, just wow). Now I listen to different ones depending on my mood. Also shoutout to any Mastodon Mayhemers who may be watching
You check out The Coma Machine by Between the Buried and Me, dude. I swear you won’t regret it.
was just about to request this one
Ben Olson i want him to do white walls or selkies the endless obsession
night-raider 52 Selkies would be great too. I just thought The Coma Machine would be a great intro to them because it has a great mix of growling and clean vocals, a very catchy chorus, and great instrumentation (as always).
Ben Olson very good point there honestly
Pantera - Cemetery Gates
The transition into the chorus is one of my favorite transitions. Ever.
I know you just reacted to 2 Mastodon songs, BUT you should really react to "The Motherload" from them and DEFINITELY watch the video. I would love to see your reaction to it, ha. All the Mastodon fans know what I'm talking about.
Did he do it???
Educative💗
Insomnium - While We Sleep
Christoph Breucker YES
Insomnium, absolutely, but my vote would be for Ephemeral!
Christoph Breucker I’ve been trying to get him to open many doors and then get him to moved to the melodic Scandinavian death metal scene, but if anything can get him addicted it is this perfection. Pretty much at the top of my list of artists. What do you think about their team up with Mikael for the track “Weather the Storm”?
Winters Gate lol
Christoph, that track is so amazing live. Because it has a cool video and is an accessible track, I think it's a good choice.
*Ghost* - *Cirice* ( or *Rats). I really liked your reaction to Square Hammer* (Watched her about 10 times)
Rrrrrrats!
I also said he should listen to Faith and Dance Macabre
Devin Rodenberg, Dance Macabre is a very light song (but very cool), most subscribers will not qualify for it
i really like your reactions! I look forward to each and everyone!
Love u do Mastodon, legends ! Pure quality
Asleep In The Deep by Mastodon, PLEASE!
Deftones - Knife Prty
Let’s get experimental baby!!!!
Naytone then I think it would be better any Deth song. Isn't it?
Can I just say I have a lot of respect for you to branch out of your comfort genre to show appreciation to other genres. Your metal reaction videos are the reactions I wish people got when I expose them to this music and they just don’t get it. They don’t call it music and it’s so frustrating. I’m glad you appreciate this type of music because it’s not given the kind of credit it deserves. Much respect
Mastodon - Iron Tusk
Dude sleeping giant
Easily one of their best songs
If I could like this 1 million times I would. Song holds a special place in my heart.
Nate Seese mine too man..sleeping giant and hearts alive
Great song. Great video.
Arch Enemy - Nemesis
This song has such a haunting vibe, i love this band so much. Im surprised you didnt comment on it, but they have 3 lead singers, each one of them playing an instrument as well. They're just a talented group of dudes.
Always looking for your guitar solos reaction lol
Insomnium - While we sleep
Meshuggah - Straws Pulled At Random
More great Mastodon songs:
Steambreather
Show Yourself
The Motherload
Divinations
Colony of Birchmen
Mastodon is the shit. Seeing them live is on my bucket list
Mastodon is one of those bands that never seem to disappoint. DVSR Please!
Ok more Mastodon
Sleeping Giant
Crusher Destroyer
Octopus Has No Friends
Asleep in the Deep
Steambreather
Also the song (and album) is a tribute to the drummer's (Brann Dailor) sister who committed suicide when she was 16. A fun fact is some of their other albums are tributes to loved ones who have passed away.
'The Hunter' is a tribute to the guitarists brother who died while on a hunting trip.
'Emperor of Sand' is a tribute to various loved ones of the band who were diagnosed or who have passed away from cancer.
That's why I love Mastodon so much, they put such real emotion into their music.
Too bad you picked the music video. First they removed some instrumental parts to make it video friendly, and the weird scenes are distracting from the music. It is so much better to discover it staring at the amazing album cover.
They cut the intro short as well
What I like about Mastodon is that every song and every album is almost a completely different experience.
Check out Code Orange - Forever and Knocked Loose - Billy No Mates // Counting Worms. They will knock your socks off, stagedives and high fives!
^^^^^
SLEEPING GIANT is the song you should jam. Super chill.
This track is so amazing every time I hear it I get chills.
Machine Head - Aesthetics Of Hate
Your reactions are interesting because I converted my "hip-hop head" friend through Mastodon lol
Hey Alex!!! How about TesseracT - Of Matter live in studio???
Brann Dailor is an effing BEAST! He's what got me hooked on this band. Playing drums like that AND singing. What?! Black Tongue is another lovely one.
Rage Against the Machine - Bulls on Parade
TwinBorn I'm not a rage fan but that song is a definite must hear
I don't think that's a good start. How about Guerrilla Radio or Sleep Now in the Fire
Fistfull of Steel, Know Your Enemy and Testify are also good picks
Chew Your Good Food Yeah I love those songs as well but I thought we should start him off with the less political songs before diving into those really political ones.
few videos ago i also requested "take the power back"
I dismissed Mastodon for a while bc they're one of those bands that takes a certain amount of tunes to "get it". Just like when you start watching Game of Thrones and there's so many stories going on you feel like you'll never keep track, but once you get it its fucking great! I'd recommend "Divinations" or "Steambreather" next
Funny cause mastodon was on game of thrones
For me it took seeing them live to become a fan. They come out with no intro or bs and get right to the music. Then music like seeps into your bones. After 1 song you’re head banging, after 3 songs you realize your whole body is moving.
Finally! I feel you, it's hard to pick right introductory song from Mastodon, because their sound is quite unique and rather deep and progressive than catchy, unlike most mainstream metal bands. I guess that's exactly the reason I like this guys so much, I perceive their music like real art, and the first song that caught my attention was Sleeping Giant, beautiful song. Crack the Skye is probably my favorite Mastodons album, it's a conceptual album and a tribute to Brann Dailors sister, and my favorite song from that album is The Czar, highly recommended :) Thanks for checking them up, keep up with the good work ;) cheers
Cannibal Corpse - Hammer Smashed Face
NOTIFICATIONS SQUAD!

Cellar Studio Productions I miss them so much 😥
You are not alone with that.
Greetings from Germany ;)
Great reaction! Thank you for not jumping the gun like some of these other reaction channels when it comes to judging Mastodon. Please check out some other killer tracks from Crack the Skye like Divinations, The Czar, or The Last Baron.
And plague flowers the kaleidoscope by Ne Obliviscaris
Seth Freckleton or As Icicles Falls
I'm not a Mastodon-Fan but this Song is awesome... I should listen to the album, right? Thx for the video,Alex \m/
EnnmansWorld

Knocked Loose - Billy No Mates // Counting Worms
Kublai Khan - The Hammer
Listen to Kublai Khan for your Texas brethren! They're from Dallas!
90k subs thats crazy af, im saying it like very couple of weeks but keep it up
When they toured this album, I caught a number of their stops. Once of the best concert experiences I've had. They played the album end to end and included a few treats at the end. Troy Sanders is a boss.
Jinjer- Words of Wisdom.
Arch Enemy- War eternal( Live at Wacken)
Decapitated- Earth Scar
Slayer- Repentless
Vader- Triumph of death
Marek0234 he would definitely like the newer Slayer stuff!
WHILE SHE SLEEPS- SILENCE SPEAKS
The album crack the Skye is about the drummers loss of his older sister to suicide the song oblivion was written in dedication to her and his feelings he felt when she left. It's also the first song he sang and wrote
Hey, love what you do man! Got 3 requests for you.
1: Wings of Feather and Wax by Killer be Killed (featuring Troy Sanders, bassist for Mastodon, Greg Puciato of The Dillinger Escape Plan, and the legendary Max Cavalera of Sepultura and Cavalera Conspiracy).
2: Who is Gonna be the One (live) by Jinjer. You've already seen how incredible they are in the studio, they're just as incredible in concert.
3: Agents of Fate by Light This City, my personal favorite band.
Thanks man!
Custer slipknot won’t regret it
Digga-dat, digga-dat, digga-dadadat
Live version especially
Chew Your Good Food CUT CUT CUT ME UP
Try the Motherload by Mastodon.
Saw them a few years ago with Clutch and Graveyard in Baltimore, fantastic show and a great laid back crowd.
This whole album (about the death of brann's sister) is SO sad :'(
You did the absolute same faces I did first time I heard this song. I love how cute you look genuinely interested in the songs!
Leprous - Contaminate Me (Live at Rockefeller Music Hall) please+ thank you
Leftham Sam leprous is amazing
FIRE FROM THE GODS!! COME ON ALEX... Treat your self!
*Oblivion*
It took me a while to get into this group, but started with this song. You'll get a feel from it the more you listen to them and each of their albums. Crack the Skye was my favorite, but each has their own sound. Anyways thanks for reviewing both
The album is titled Crack the Skye, it is a concept album featuring Aether, representing all souls, and spirits. All of their albums represent elements(all the concept albums.) however, the chorus of oblivion as you mentioned is about a loved one dying, in specific, the drummer Brann Dailor’s sister, which was named Skye. The whole album is absolutely amazing
Angelus Apatrida -You Are Next
Please do Shylmagoghnar - Transcience.
It's quite long, but it immediately became one of my favorites and I'm pretty sure you'll like it too. Very emotional melodic death metal.
It even has the lyrics in the captions, so if I get lucky and you decide to react to this song, I would turn them on as I find lots of meaning behind them.
Man, I'm so glad I stumbled upon Shylmagoghnar a few months ago. Fucking incredible first album, and cannot wait for the upcoming second.
Yeah, for sure man. The new one is up on Spotify now btw!
I saw them a week and half ago with Primus. Awsome show and I met the drummer.
Dude you have to hear their latest track toe to toes!! Extremely upbeat and awesome!
honestly I think show yourself, roots remain or jaguar god (all from their newest album) are a better introduction to the band
x Jaguar God is so sick
I can't agree with Show Yourself. It's a black sheep song from their discography. Very different than everything else and not representative of their music.
Scar Symmetry - Neohuman
Everybody already explained the thing about Mastodon. You got to listen them a bit but man when you start you discover a band that has songs that can't get old. I listen to metal since I was 14 and I'm still amazed about some of their song making. They're a different animal lol :)
I LIKE HOW HONEST YOU ARE ALEX ! WE HAVE THE SAME THOUGHTS ALSO
please way of the vikings by amon amarth i think you´d love it
As I lay dying - My own grave. It's their new song in like 6 years? Read some background history as to why it's such a big deal that they're releasing new music with the full original lineup
Squiggle Wiggle he is gonna have problems with copyrights but if he can then hell yeah. Sound of truth would be a better choice though. My opinion.
"original lineup"
Squiggle wiggle my own grave is having problems, anyone that reacts to it is having the audio muted, but I'd be down for pretty much any as i lay dying reaction.
shadybrain3424 yeah cause ive seen some other people reacting to it and pretty much all of them had the audio muted or had a link in the description.
A little piece of heaven with the official video and your girlfriend thank you! I won’t stop requesting it!
I have absolutely fallen in love with this band over the last few months
