- Marvel's Spider-Man is up there as one of the most beloved superhero games of all time. That said, it also contains one of the most annoying fictional characters to ever grace our reality - Screwball. This character has rubbed people the wrong way since this game launched. Today, I wanted to take a few minutes to talk about why people hate Screwball so much and why Peter Parker has the patience of an actual saint. #spiderman #marvelspiderman #gaming

Great video! The reason why I didn't like Screwball is because of how it's the Saw argument. "I'm not the one who did it. They did it to themselves, " but at least Saw is a hypocrite, so they acknowledge that flaw. Screwball is fine with what her followers are doing and refuses to accept when she gets in trouble

Screwball is basically like the riddler in this from a point of view the challenges are hard and I definitely agree this type of character does really exist which is why she's annoying I actually find riddler way more obnoxious but I also definitely agree that screwballs challenges are just on you checklist to 100% the game
Can only speak for myself, but Screwball being irritating was even more simple than her being "too real". I actually thought the streamer gimmick for a character who exists to set-up side challenges was kinda clever, and some of her actual lines are fun too, but j. jonah christ did they have to go out of their way to give her the most grating voice in the world.
It's clearly intentional that she be annoying, but there's a cutoff point between the audience still being in on the joke as it annoys the *character* and the performance being legitimately frustrating to listen to. That said, they only need to tone her down a bit to make it far better, so I'm not opposed to seeing her "Riddler's Revenge" in the sequel.
Wasn't Dan Slott the one who incorporated her into the game? It wouldn't be surprising for a writer who created a character to include that character in other things they worked on.

They did a good job of making her really annoying and awful, ok we're supposed to hate her
but that doesnt necessarily translate to fun when we're actually getting annoyed

I was always a fan of the comic version of the character who, while still obsessed with the views was early on very lighthearted and fun and had a more jovial relation with Spider-Man. This version however is everything you stated in the video. She puts people in danger for the sake of views and doesn't care who gets hurt. And then they gave her the most annoying voice possible to cement not liking her at all.
I really didn't see screwball as anything but as an annoyance. However it was kind of interesting to see her get almost like the Harley Quinn kind of style for this version of Spider-Man.
I mean if you recall in the Spider-Man Shattered Dimensions video game will you play as the Ultimate Spider-Man you faced off against Ultimate Deadpool who basically almost does the same thing as screwball does.
That being said though I do love this video that you did about her Jay. Now if Insomniac does decide to bring back screwball I can see her probably be almost akin to like Harley Quinn and Riddler combined in terms of their annoyance but also their sense of improving on your skills during the game.
Well Deadpool actually has charisma and was you know actually funny and charismatic in his mission, traits that are foreign to screwball.

Yeah. She's like Harley Quinn and Riddler's Secret Love-Child with Joker as the Creepy Step-Father. Hence, in fairness, she's too sick and insane in the brain to actually get irritated if you win.
Where to me, Riddler felt like he was to challenge and antagonize the player (Batman), Screwball very quickly just annoys the player. While Riddler is mostly looking to prove his superiority, easier to ignore and amusing to get under his skin, the more you complete his challenges, Screwball is an attention seeker through and through and little you do, actually does something different. While Riddler can come across as a Jigsaw wanabe but with more of an intelligence angle, Screwball is the embodiement of one of the most annoying people on the planet: attention seeking streamers with "Main Character syndrome".
That said, the fact that she annoys so perfectly, speaks volumes of how good she was actually written. A character as Screwball has to be annoying in order to work.
I thought she was a coolish unique bad character in the game, kinda hope she returns in 2.
But man they brought in her in ALL the DLC's which had you do even more of her challenges which pissed me off. Each dlc's challenges from her were unique which was nice, but only for the 1st-3rd time because then you have to repeat it several times at each sector

Honestly I think this was the point of Screwball. You're not supposed to like her. You're supposed want to bring her down. And the majority felt this way about her. In that aspect Insomniac was successful. It's kinda like the heel in pro wrestling
Exactly. Although she is not a villain she does things on Spiderman like a 'bad guy' would like tarnish his reputation
Screwball is freaking annoying and really not fun character in my opinion.
Yeah I didn't really enjoy her challenges in the DLC partly because I am a completionist and I need to get all of them but still just I hope she does not exist in the next game

I think they could of made screwball better by tapping into how social media affects young people. They kind of already did but they never really explain why she’s obsessed over popularity this much.

I will agree straight up I don’t like Screwball at all in the Insomniac Spider Man games she is annoying throughout it mostly in the DLC expansion it reminded of some youtubers who act like that who I don’t like by the way

The reason the Riddler worked for me is that he was funny. He was constantly insulting the people that he hire in the challenge maps, and while he was obnoxious, like what Degenerate Jay said, you got this sense of satisfaction when you solve his puzzles and see how aggravated and annoyed he became. With Screwball, you don't get that. Also her voice is annoying.
I've never had much disdain for the character. I think I just understood her well enough that she didn't bother me that much. I even thought she was funny during my first two playthroughs.
That said, her challenges have diminishing returns once you figure them out. And her jokes get lamer the more you here them.
This character would've been fine in smaller doses. It would've been better if she wasn't part of The City That Never Sleeps and she popped up in Miles' game or Spider-Man 2.
While I disliked her as a whole, I didn't mind her challenges except for two of the gadget challenges (the trip mine one and the one in the last dlc). Those two challenges annoyed to no end.
Short answer: TOO DANG ANNOYING!
Long answer: She's loud, annoying, and a complete pain in the butt. Plus her tasks in the dlc are just worse versions of Taskmaster's trials, adding in her annoying af commentary!
So yeah, for the love of God, do not let her return in Spider-man 2!
Also don't remind me of the Riddler. I still have ptsd after 100%ing all 3 games in a row, not counting origins!
I don´t get it personally, she completely works in game, is believable and the game always points out that what she is doing is bad. What you said in the video that the problem is that "she is too real" doesn´t make sense, some of the best villains or heroes are precisely praised for that :l

Loved both Spider-Man games. Beat Spider-Man 4 times and Miles twice. Platinumed both games minus the DLC. I won't do the Screwball stuff. Started doing it on my first playthrough and skipped it every time there after.
I think the whole community agrees on this 😂😭. What makes her worst is that they could have put hydro man, beetle, or chameleon in her place.
Yes, Riddler in Arkham Knight is a bit better of a villain! Screwball is so annoying! Taskmaster is 10x better than Screwball and he is actually not annoying.
I can't stand Screwball because she's annoying. He voice is annoying, the word she says is annoying, her plot is annoying and over used. Once you stopped her the firsr time, that should have eneded it with her. Nope let's bring back the worst written character in all DLC's as well. 😔
The fact that nothing you do hurts Screwball is the worst part. Just give me a side objective where I get to destroy all her cameras and make her cry about it. Or have Miles pull a DDOS attack beforehand so she has no watchers.
i actually loved screwball, i think it was funny, and i love her challenges. It was fun. Well you cant compare Batman and Spiderman, so you can also compare Screwball and the riddler. Spiderman is just a friendly neighborhood fella while the Batman is the World's greatest detective. So i think the puzzle and traps fits Batman more than it would fit in a Spiderman game.
Reason I don't like screwball because her challenges are so boring so lame like it reminds me if I'm playing Batman I forced to do all the Riddler stuff like I just don't care but I understand why they had stuff like this in his game so people has something to do if they beat the story in this challenges will make people keep playing the game if they beat the story mode already. Personal im one of those who always try to get 100% on everything before I beat the story mode

I just hope that they dial the challenges back just a little bit. Some of the requirements to get trophies after completing them were very ridiculous. Especially since you had to get a perfect on every one of Screwballs challenges in order to get a Game trophy. Or maybe that was Taskmaster but either way I feel like they need to dial it back just a bit.
It's probably taskmaster since screwball challenges were only dlc.

Comparing Screwball to Riddler is wild to me. Riddler grew up in a city filled with terrorists, scum, and borderline war criminals. He goes to Arkham because he’s criminally insane and mentally feels a need to convey his intellectual superiority. And he chose the person that’s the pinnacle of human capabilities as his enemy. To prove his superiority to Batman since Batman is a pinnacle human specimen and someone who can challenge him. So beating him would prove his intellectual prowess. And drag down Batman. Screwballs just a clout chasing a hole. She’s basically if Jigsaw had a child with a Paul.
Screwball and Amanda from Dead Island 2 are characters I simply can't stand, but at least DI 2 had the decency to let players completely mangle and butcher her to tiny chunks.
I absolutely hate the Screwball missions and the character as a whole. If she does appear in the sequel, I hope it's for too long. The Riddler comparison is valid, I can't stand that version of him, but Screwball is some how even worse because of the age and just wanting to get acknowledgement, more Riddler and some how, in small cases, more than current WWE Universal Champion Roman Reigns. I wish there was a little more of Taskmaster instead or, heck, even some Black Cat or maybe a side quest trying to prove J. Jonah Jameson wrong, any of those would have been better
I hate Screewball do to the fact for my 1st playthrough of the game I did a full 100% run meaning I did every optional objective and got gold on every Taskmaster and SCREWBALL challenge and the thing to say the challenges aren't that hard triggers me a little since for every single time I'm not fast enough, can't get my gadgets to lock on to the correct enemy/combowed out of nowhere/encounter something completely different on another attempt/or even dare I say miss a photo bomb and or getting a little trigger fingered and hit R1 too quickly on the photo I have to restart the challenge again, and Again, and AGain, and AGAin, and AGAIn, AND AGAIN!!! 😡🤬 All while hearing her ANNOYING dialogue and those snarky comments whenever you die I want to ring her f*****g NECK and even her squeeky voice annoys me plus I don't understand how Screwball's challenges are harder then Taskmaster's by the time I FINALLY could an end to her challenges I was disappointed she was only getting sent to Rykers Peter has way more mental restrain then I cause I would've pulled a Wraith and ended her on the spot but i couldn't but i would at least beat the crap out of her or want to get her channel terminated ugh sorry if this turn a hate speech I just really do NOT like Screwball and I hope we NEVER see her again (plus its because of her that i CANNOT say this is 1 of my favorite games of time she knocks it down a few pegs)

Riddler has the best challenges if we're looking at arkham city with those puzzle rooms.
I always wished the challenges in Arkham Knight from Riddler were more room-based and jigsaw-like in the way they were in City and less Batmobile-based.
@@DegenerateJay I agree. When I think of the riddler at his best it was in Arkham city the puzzle rooms were basically a reward for collecting trophies and answering riddles. Even tracking him down and having to navigate a maze of without triggering the explosives is a puzzle in and of itself.
Orphanage puzzles in knight were simpler but still cool since they required timing (referring to the puzzle where batman and catwoman have to stand on platforms to maintain a current of electricity or the last one before he showed up with the mech suit.
Come to think of it it's where I got sick of the batmobile in arkham knight.
It's what's kept them weak.
Awesome Video Jay!!! I personally think both Arkham Series Riddler and Screwball in Marvels Spider-Man PS4/Remastered PS5 are equally annoying. I didn’t mind Riddler in Arkham Asylum and Arkham Origins but Arkham City and Knight he made wish I could dropped him off a building and watch him draw his last breath. Same with Screwball. The constant taunting and obnoxious dialogue really tests your patience in the game. If I was Arkham Verse Batman I wouldn’t be afraid of breaking his no kill rule on Joker but with Riddler. Same with Spider-Man in the Insomniac Verse. I guess kudos to Rocksteady and Insomniac Games for giving us a character to despise and hate but I just feel at the end of the day they did a bit overkill with just how annoying both are. Jay you made a great point about how Riddler is less annoying because at least you do meaningful puzzles which is a solid take that I did not think of before. Great video man keep up the great work!!

IDK how you are going to summarize her, but as a riddler fan, the big thing is that Riddler is not self aware of how much of a loser he is, but screwball having a legitimate fanbase in lore (which I don't get why) she doesn't have much to go off of other than being annoying. a similar character in concept is Ultimate Deadpool (in shattered dimensions) but Deadpool is funny and does not need to rely on streaming. bro got his own tv show.

I will admit, her missions are definitely one of the game’s low-points (particularly when replaying the game) but I love Skrewball as a character because of that real-world commentary; I assumed she was an original character but was very pleased to see she’s a comic book character and I was very happy to see her appear in the DLC.
I can understand why Screwball did not return to the Sequel game. But it’s a shame they drop Taskmaster too. He seem to be teasing a bigger story and side mission for the future and stood out like a better challenge character than Screwball.
I figured Screwball was satire on clout culture. That's how I viewed it anyway.

I'm currently replaying both games and the worst part for me is the sheer amount of mj missions. It's pretty much a mj and Spider-man team up game. If it was one or two fine. But it wad over and over it felt like every other mission..
What really annoyed me is that she was brought back for the 3 dlc story and doing the same side missions got really repetitive I hope they don't do that for spiderman 2
I only ask that if they bring her back, we get to give her the superior Spider-Man treatment lol

Yeah I think the whole point was that you are supposed to hate her and people like her. I for the most part enjoyed the idea of the character and how she reflected real life. I didn't really care for her challenges though, they could be pretty irritating.

If you think about it, this is exactly what makes her one of the most unique Spider-Man villains, the moral of “Social Media shouldn’t be your life and existence.” Should be talked about more, I don’t know why people hate her, she’s a great character, annoying sure but that does not make a great character horrible. I don’t get it, seriously why hate the moral that’s needed in modern society?
Oh the moral is great. The moral is a 10/10. I think it's more just the idea that if I tell a great moral with a character, but I've purposely designed the character to be obnoxious, people will find the character obnoxious. It's pretty much the intent of the writers imo that we don't like her. I do think not liking her doesn't need to mean ditching the moral understanding, though.

screwball should've been a one and done deal imo, i wish we had the taskmaster in the dlcs instead as with the taskmaster there was the ppl that hired him as something we could've found out if we got the taskmaster instead of screwball
@Dachin55555 so did screwjob and unlike taskmaster she got arrested, and there was the ones that hired taskmaster that was more of a reason for taskmaster to be in the dlc than screwjob
