    Very good tips. How can we get lot of fruits fast with young plants?
    For overcrowded, I guess we can always prune them.
    Also how did you build pot and trellis?

    • @sackboymahalo
      @sackboymahalo  4 роки тому

      Hello. Usually you get few fruits from young plants because they have few branches and as they mature they have more branches which translate to more storage of energy to be able to support more fruit production. I guess you can coax the plant to grow more branches by increasing nitrogen application during the first year.
      This is a link to the first video of the series which shows how the trellis/post is made and how the 55 gallon barrel is set up: ua-cam.com/video/oT8e634E3A8/v-deo.html
      There will be a link to the next part at the end of each video.
      I hope this helps. Thank you for your comment and thank you for watching. 👍😊👍 Cheers

    Well,
    I got about 20 cuttings from ebay, about 4 varieties, most sets of 2, I have 5 pots (25 gallons each pot)
    I mixed the hell out of them and they already growing new branches, that is the only DONT's I did. I saw a few other videos of Dragon fruits were the growers mentioned it was ok to mix them.
    Will see how mine grow up.
    I was looking the over crowded dragon fruit on this video and all I saw was $12 bucks per cutting that was alot of money if he sells them.
    Thank you for the video.

    Viewing the commercial dragon fruit plantations.....they are limiting the amount of branches and reducing the fruit yield probably to have uniform big dragon fruits sizes. I do practice the way you let as many branches that stay in the plant to get as many fruits as possible.

    Thank you so much for you great videos! They are so helpful. I am relatively new as a dragonfruit grower in East Co San Diego and now see that I have broken all 5 rules!🤦🏼‍♀️🤷‍♀️ but I am determined to learn and grow in success of helping my stems produce fruit! Question…some growers suggest only 3 stems per branch and taking the tips off the ends. I see your plants are full of fruit so I am very interested in your wisdom of this and the understanding of trimming and tipping off the ends.

    • @sackboymahalo
      @sackboymahalo  2 роки тому

      Hello. I mainly trim for the 3 Ds (dead, dying and diseased branches as well as for balancing of the post. I used to "tip" but I don't anymore. I did not see any difference between tipped and untipped branches as far as fruit production. I just let the branches grow. I hope this helps. Thank you again. 👍😊👍 Cheers

  • @leahsacay7547

    I am just starting out, about 6 mo., and the videos I have seen emphasize using only broad, long, healthy cuttings to start new plants. Then, I saw a video made on a dragon fruit plantation, (Philippines), and some of his mature plants had about a foot of the green flesh 'missing' from the bottom of the plant, with just the inner white core showing. I had cut away, and just left on the ground the 'undesirable' cuttings, and after a couple of months they started to root, so I moved them to grow. Apparently, not every dragon fruit needs the same amount of sunlight, so it is going to be a learning process for me. A note: Yes, land in CA is expensive, so why not consider "retiring" to a South Pacific area?

    • @sackboymahalo
      @sackboymahalo  2 роки тому

      Hello. Consider the green part of the dragon fruit plant as the leaves while the woody inner core as the branches. So the dragon fruit plant will still grow with a portion of the green part missing and exposing the woody portion. I like the weather in my area here in San Diego (not too cold and not too hot) 😁 South Pacific is probably a very nice place to live. Thank you again for your comment.👍😊👍 Cheers

    Great tips! Thanks, for sharing! Next year, I expect to have fruit, so I'm gathering all the information that I can. I have a question. Do you ever have a problem with raccoons, opossums, rats, etc., eating your dragon fruit?

    • @sackboymahalo
      @sackboymahalo  5 років тому +1

      Hello. So far I do not have problems other than ants which I am able to control. I've seen possums and skunks crossing but they seem to have not discovered the dragon fruits yet. I have a few cats from my neighbors that enjoy playing in my backyard day and night. They might be the main reason why I don't have those problems. Thank you for your question and thank you for watching. 😊👍 Cheers.

    One year old plant (4) in one large pot this summer it flowered over 20 beautiful flowers. Purple flesh tag said self pollination and I hand pollinated most of them anyway. They all bloomed but after a few days every one of them fell off not a single fruit! I water three days a week plant looks very healthy. I don’t know why no fruit… so frustrating after all the hard work growing watering fertilizer etc.

    I see some of your pots are half inserted in the ground. What pot sizes do you use? 5 gal or bigger? Did you have the bottoms cut off? I did mine the same way and had the bottoms cut off for roots to stretch. Now I am concerned about root bound when they get bigger and also difficult to add compost and fertilizer. Any suggestions?

    Great video Sackboymahalo, thank you.
    I have a question, I am in South Florida and about 2 years ago, I planted approx. 14 Dragon Fruit plants (mixed varieties, sorry, did it before I saw your video) in groups of 4, grew very well on their 4-foot trellis, however the plants produced many, many beautiful, healthy-looking flowers but did not set fruit, I only got 3 fruits in the 2-year period. I have tried pollinating them in different ways, using my hand, placing the pollen in a container and using a soft brush to pollinate them, swapping the pollen from plant to plant with a brush or leaving them alone without success.
    Like I said, the plants and flowers look very healthy and pretty; an observation, I don't know if it's normal, in a group of plants, I find many bugs at the inner base of the flowers, they look like small brown weevils, they can only fly a little, (Nitops craigheadi ???) I don't know if they are harmful or beneficial, I don't know if that has something to do with no bearing fruit, apart from that, I don't see any other bug outside of the plants that affects them, any suggestions? Thanks in advance
    I found a video that it shows something similar to what I see inside the flowers:

      Hello. Some varieties need cross pollination to produce fruit. Do you have a variety that is fertile (does not need pollens from a different to set fruit)? I have a variety that I know is fertile that I get pollens from for use in cross pollination. I usually collect the pollens from all the flowers that bloomed in one small container. After collecting all the pollens, I mix them together before I go around and start cross pollinating the flowers. I then store the excess pollens in the freezer for future use..
