I just picked up a 2003, 1st gen Prius for my wife as a commuter. Got it for $4500 used, one owner with 92K on it when I brought it home. Has 96K on it now in just two months, as my wife drives 47 miles each way to work daily. We are seeing 44.7 mpg avg on this commute, which is 90% all flat highway.
I've noticed the car gets better mpg's using it in town for errands, than say doing highway driving at 70 mph. The car still feels solid for being 12 years old now, and 96k miles. The only thing that doesn't work anymore, are 2/4 door locks, apparently a common problem on this gen Prius (Almost not worth fixing for us) as it's kind of our beater. I've also heard the repair is fairly difficult, and the new actuators are pricy.
So far I have confidence in the reliability. I purchased this car from a fairly sketch BHPH lot, where the original 12V battery was dead when I initially looked at the car. I have since replaced the 12V Aux battery (Small one in trunk) and have not had a single problem since.
The only thing I dislike is the sedan body style. We are a family of four, with two young boys in car seats. Our '03 Prius gets the job done, with relative comfort, but I wish it was a hatchback or wagon. Also another interesting thing about this car, when you meet people driving around or at gas stations, they are always curious what kind of car it is. I've even had Gen 2 & Gen 3 Prius owners ask what kind of car it is, not knowing it was the OG Prius.
Yes the Prius actually gets more efficient in the city than the highway :) If you could handle only going 80km/h maybe it would be a little more efficient on highway.
I tried one but it's slow and doesn't sound very well went back to my 1966 F250(352 V8) pretty quickly lol. Only gets about 13 MPG but eh I can afford
you got ripped off
@@RennieAsh not only prius but also other hybrid cars
lol "This thing is so roomy you can spread your legs, give birth, and name your baby" LOL!!!!!!!
Einas Ahmed he is funny he makes me smile
bagel gang that’s random lol
😂😂😂
Lol! He always says that in cars with front split bench seating or absent counsol.
Get a life buy a new prius
My old neighborhood was full of these! 3/4 of the neighborhood was 1st generation prius'
I am aware i was not discussing the first gen prius. they suck lol. i was saying that purchasing a prius nowadays (2nd gen and up) is nothing that would turn a potential buyer away as the the "complications" of the hybrid system aren't really in existence.in 2009 consumerreports crowned the 2009 prius as the most reliable car on the market, and the reliability trend continued into the 3rd gen for prius. i would never think of buying a 1st gen but 2nd gen why not...i have one with 120k on it fine
I remember seeing this car new at dealership around '00-'01 thinking this was the future. I was somehow right.
At 7:26 lol
I really like this car for some odd reson. I think its because it was kinda rare, and was the first prius. Wish you could have gone thru the touch screens functions, and the nav. Oh well! Some day you should do a drive and 0-60 on one of these puppys! Lol good review
Do you come across auctions with big rigs? It would be nice to see an interior tour of one of those.
I didn't even know this generation Prius existed. Haha
wow this 02 makes more hp than my 2012 prius c :P
Front and rear are Camry like. I'll call it a mini-Camry.
I want to restore one of these plus a red 86 Taurus LX.
this reminds me of the toyota echo
Hey Chris what are your current personal cars? And I agree you did not copy saabkyle04 You give opinionated reviews and he gives non opinionated tours
0-60 was about 12.7 seconds, but 0-30 was about 3.5 seconds.
this car have a better 0-60 time than my car
It doesn’t. Trust me.
I never seen one of these in my area first gen
Good review
Nevermind It has the same kind of shifter
Lmao, this guy's revving a Prius?
Battery only goes bad in these cars if you let sit to long or you are not an effiecnt driver
7:26 😂
I saw one in a parking lot
Looks like an Echo
(engine cuts off) Shit! lmao
Er....it's designed to do that. It's a feature of the Hybrid Engine. My 2008 Prius even turns its engine off while cruising, and runs on the electric motor only for certain distances. It's all governed by the onboard THS / HSD computers.
I know what's wrong with it, it's a 30 minute job to fix it, don't even need any parts. :P
how? mine has the same problem?
That was a while ago, turns out it might be 3 things. I first thought it was a relay. I forgot which one, I think it was emc or something like that. I swapped the identical horn one with it and the warning went away for a while. When it came back, I thought it was the mass airflow sensor. I bought a cleaner made specifically for that to clean it as well as some throttle body cleaner and cleaned those things. When it came back again, I found it was actually the potentiometer in the accelerator/gas pedal. I found a cheap replacement on eBay, but after replacing it, the warning was permanent, so I had to have a mechanic reset the hybrid computer. After that it's been running great for over a year!
Hope that info helps. :)
If none of those, your hybrid battery might need to be replaced. That warning usually means the hybrid system is deactivated. I noticed my car worked while the warning was on, just had less power.
one thing a lot of people don't know is that it's horrible to leave batteries without discharging and recharging them for over 2 weeks, and the longer, the worse it is for the batteries.
If you leave a battery without charging/discharging it for over a year, it most likely won't hold a charge anymore.
my car was sitting with a bad 12v battery for a month before I bought it so I'm gonna replace a cell I pulled the code and it said block 11 low
You are peins guy tho
lol
Were are these auctions? im looking for one and i am in nj..
It sounds like a vacuum cleaner
Holy fuck that is spot on
So true 😂😂
Thats how lots of toyota engines sound like
@@ACoTam2 all hybrids sound like this.
Yeah but what matters is that it's reliable, efficient and practical.
That car will need a new HV battery, lol. Red Triangle of Death...

Hello, my name is Sparrow Drinks Juice and I was born in a 2002 prius :)
Have you ever driven a Prius? I've had my 2002 Prius for 12 years and have only replaced the 12 volt battery, tires and front brakes. What you don't get is that this Prius actually gets 50 mpgs average. Thirteen from 0 to 60 is the gas engine only. With a fully charged traction battery it's actually 0-60 in 10 seconds. At 196,000 miles,, the traction battery is still working well, thank you. Best car I've ever owned and I'm 53. better than any american car I've owned. Smooth drive with plenty of power.
Fuck you.
You are disgusting
Your ODO will stop at 299,999 miles, though.
Steve Leombruno at least buy a new Prius
Thank you. My son's transmission died. Looking at a 2002 Prius. $2500.00. 121K miles. Clean. Do you suggest we get it???
I would love to buy a cheap one and restore it to it's former glory. Then I'm never getting rid of it anything happens. This one and 1st gen Honda Insight were like speceships back then.
Better than the Smartcar at least
agree smart car biggest pile shite I have bought over the past 36/7 years driving and was worst 200quid I spent lol efffing nightmear car and I have lost count how many cars I have owend no kidding
Yeah true something is wrong with you if you want to make a car THAT small
what you don’t get is that a smart car is just a squished Mercedes
Seeing this car reminds me of seeing a first gen iPod or iPhone. Advanced for its time but bright future ahead for it.
I have this exact same car. Has been in the family since new, and still running strong. 210,000 miles strong at the moment. With little maintenance costs I expect to get at least 300k out of it. I laugh when people rip on the looks of the vehicle. Does it look dork? Totally!! It still gives 48 MPG on my long dorky commute though, and that's all I'm interested in. I laugh every time I go past the gas station. A breeze to work on also. People are apprehensive about working on the Hybrid, but once you learn about how it works, it's just like any other car.
To bad your ODO will stop at 299,999
you laugh when u go past a gas station lmao like thats the only good thing u can say about ur car but dang id rather fill up 2 to 3 times a week on gas then drive those ugly things its simply just boring life is to short to drive a boring car
Hello guys, I have someone trying to sell me one with 180,000 miles. For 3,000 idk if I should I invest into one. I drive for a living, and want a hybrid vehicle to save gas. Any advice?
@@javim9621 Cars are not about being ''fun'' to drive, these machines are about taking you from point A to B as efficient as possible. And the Prius is not ugly, it has the chape to be as aerodynamic as possible, everything that the Prius have has a purpose. Is not just about gas mileage, is about maintenance and reliability, and nothing comes even close to a Prius when it comes to reliability, efficiency and maintenance cost.
Hey I love these 1st gen Prius😊 awesome car
Omg give birth and name ur baby! Ahahahahhahaha had me DYING!
That looks like Honda Accord
Apparently the European version is a little bit different. Disc brakes at the back, folding back seats with plenty legroom and some other things. I have mine for almost 11 years. Drove it for over 200.000 km's. Very comfortable car. Had also a 2005 Prius for 6 years and I drive a 2009 (3rd gen.) occasionally. But I prefer my 2001.
The only problem with the Euro version was that there was no cruise control.
The Ultimate Larry David Car!
Probably would have made more sense if toyota made it a middle seat in front with the counsol that low.
Hey 42luke i watch your vids, why are you here?
Those rear lights remind me of the w203
I've always thought that shifter thing looked weird on those cars.
Harrison S no it doesn't it looks awesome
Harrison S me too 😂 hey Harrison, it's thomas
Sexy Subaru yee! That's awesome haha! I'll have to check out your channel!
NSW120 - Triangle light is a master warning which means something has triggered off the error light - Could be something insignificant - not always the battery. As for the battery replacement - Most of these older cars just require a simple balance charge, which align the batteries back to the same voltage level. Can be done at most Toyota service centres.
oh thank you, I watched this tour because mine just went off, and I was hoping he would address that. My Prius is 13 years old, so I freak out every time something happens to it, which isn't often. Its usually super dependable
Correct! When my triangle of death first appeared I thought it was time to recycle the car.... one check of the 12volt battery that was 15years old I decided to gamble and replace it, walla! No more triangle of death! Yay! Just drove it to Ca from Wa and gave it to my sister! Hopefully she will continue to get awesome mileage and years of service. This car literally paid for itself in gas money saved over the 3 years my wife drove it...
what camera was it, that's an nice camera for 2013
So ahead of it’s time
I really like quik tour on cars...can we talk in private for business
If you are selling that car I am buying! Make me an offer dude. I love these cars and own a 02 and a 03. One of the best cars Toyota ever make. It is sad they F-ked up all the years that followed it. Grrr. I'd keep away from the 2nd gen years.
I’m selling mine
@@tamialovely5414 I may like it. What do you want for it, the city are you in. Tell me about your car, miles, repair history, whats wrong with it now, etc. More detail the better. Thanks.
canbequit araba
5:20 lol
Yeah all the savings in gas will go to repairs instead. Better off with a VW with a TDI motor. That'll last an easy 500,000 kms, no way a fuckin' Prius will do that.
2002 came with cruise control.
It's not a touch screen buddy
Did they really think putting a narrow screen in the cemter of the dash would make it easier to see your speed, gear selection and mileage and indicators?
tbh you don't need to see that your indicators are on, you hear it ;p I would prefer the speed at least to be nearer the driver's side like in the gen 2. They moved it back in the gen3 to the middle :/
Does first generation have Hybrid system?
Obviously since it says prius hybrid
I love these 1st Gen models!! They're awesome
Second Model is Better
@@MoskusMoskiferus1611 The 3rd gen takes the cake, and the 4th gen puts the "A" in "Attitude".
whatever thas supposed to mean@@wturner777
for an old car its still pretty futuristic and well designed
That shifter.....just who at Toyota thought that looked good?
I prefer cars with column shifters if it is an automatic.
Who else think this car replaced the Echo?
Eli. Hofs. It didn’t even though this gen and the echo looked very identical. The echo was kind of a basis for the Prius.
Car was so ahead of its time
4:57 that’s where you hide the weed
Ugliest car of this side 2000
In european and japan versions rear seat can fall down.
Only US version didn"t have it.
The old look ok, But the new look ugly.
you know, i was suprized you stayed as positive in this tour as you did because i think its kind of ridiculous to jump in a car you already know your going to shit on and film anyway. but OTHER then that, about the ford hybrids. they havent ate much into the market as the milege on them has been nothing like ford expressed and the reliability is pretty piss poor. the prius was named number one on the most reliable car list from 2008-2009 so complications about the powertrain is non existant too
I just finished a 1500 mile road trip in My 2002 Prius it’s now 2018 as far as I know the battery was never changed except a 12 V battery that is used to start the car and run the accessories I did that just before my trip car had 178,000 miles when I left 46 mpg not bad w gas hitting 3.80 in San Diego...all the way from Seattle Washington to San Diego including a side trip to Yosemite best car for the money I’ve ever owned, despite being 16 years old and it’s 0 to 60 in 15 minutes.... my epic journey will be on my channel by next week....
Dies when hears "This thing is so roomy you can spread your legs give birth and name your baby while your at it"
Is "dislatch" a real word?
I dont know why i laughed so hard at the give birth and name your baby while your at it
Yeah these are rare indeed.
That startup sound sounds great!
I watched a video about the first generation Prius and why it's not such a good idea to buy a used one. If the generator shorts out, it costs over $3400 to buy a new one and you still have to pay out the nose for labor, which it takes 10 hours to do the job according to scottykilmer. He made the video about it.
5:19
*what*
The new ones are ugly this one.. Looks ok
Yeah
😂
My grandma has an 03 withthe same blue color and more than 210,000 miles and shes had no major problems and her shifter looks different
666th like
door panel sorta kinda reminds me of the door panel in my grandma's 2000 honda civic (:
this is better then the new prius
I've heard egg beaters that sound more powerful than this thing....
exhaust clip in the backround shoot with the other word
What does that code mean you have?
LOLOL give birth and name your baby!
lol give birth and name ur baby while ur at it lol
1st!!!!
Bout to give birth in this thang
I found four New Hampshire
I'd rather have a Chevy cruze
so this is clay jensen’s car ok..
I saw one in the past.
Very good
Yeah, good stuff
:39 DAT MAXIMA!!! :D
they had hybrids back in 2002?
Yep! I have a 2002, same color as this one.
Is this based on the Toyota echo? But electric?
Nope but it sure looks like one.
Yes, it used the Echo's platform.
Nope. Completely different... the Echo was built on the NBC platform, while the first-gen Prius was one of the first Toyotas to be built on the MC platform.
This is sooo ugly
And the reason these people hate the Prius
And it isn't a valid reason.
