Is The Toyota Prius (First Generation) A Good Investment Or Sale Proof?

- We reviewed a 2002 Toyota Prius First Generation Hybrid. This is one of the first mass produced hybrid cars to sell in the US, and this model is one of the more normal looking Toyota Prius models and they're getting harder and harder to find. Is the First Gen Toyota Prius a good investment or sale proof?

I own the same car but mine was made in Japan...still going strong!!
And by the way, Japan was still making the same model in 03'
My 2001 was one of the first sold in the United States. I had to initiate the buying process through Toyota corporate who provided the letter to me to allow the dealership to sell me the Prius. Corporate was concerned the car would be so popular dealerships would add on a premium and wanted to avoid that.
I had that car for two years and loved it.
When I learned Toyota was changing the body style to a hatchback I bought a new 2003 because I needed a trunk.
The 2003 even had a navigation system! It is controlled by five map CDs in a player below the front passenger seat and satellite connectivity.
I sent at least 25 people to this dealership to buy a Prius. Each time they bought one I was given a check for $50 from the dealership.
I still own that 2003 and use it as my daily driver, 206,000 miles.
It is absolutely the finest car I have ever owned
how often do you have to replace the battery?
SUPER!
@@infamouz111wondering this too
@@infamouz111Mine lasted over 200,000 miles. Toyota took care of me in replacing the battery because I am kind. Even the full cost of the battery is moot, offset by federal and state rebates, fuel savings, and low maintenance.
I had one of these for about 3 years. It was 18 years old when I bought it on 100k. It was rock solid reliability wise. Completely over engineered. I only got rid of it because my catalytic converter kept getting stolen. It was absolutely pristine and it had the factory fitted sat nav too. Everything still worked (including the air con) Basically it felt like a new car. So well made.
I put a plate on it after they stole mine
The people who gave me theirs had a straight pipe welded in place of the cat after theirs got stolen a few times. I found a way on the prius forums to trick the ecu into thinking the cat was still there to get rid of the nagging engine code for it.
We didn't know it at the time, but the Prius was an absolute game changer! Toyota was WAY ahead of the curve.
Whether we like it or not, the Prius is one of the most important cars in shaping the automotive landscape
@@SaleProofCarReviews i think the first gen Prius will become very expensive in the future.
Ironically, I had an uncle who was a maritime engineer in Poland and he had this idea way back in the early 1980s.
I remember him telling me, why not capture the energy when breaking and then use it to accelerate. He pretty much described exactly how Prius hybrids operate.
Honda insight
I still own one. It is eaten by rust but the engine still working like new. It breakes my heart to see this. Not sure if i should put more money into it.
I thought the same about my 1988 xr4x4i... Fixing cheaper than buying a cheap car......
@WetLettuce-kc2qm Yeah, but what troubles/scares me is the hybrid battery. Is not produced anymore, and also a refurbished one that might get it move a few more years, costs a lot.
Those tires are tinny. It is actually a cool Looking car- I have seen one in person.
The Tesla of its day
About to get one every other jdm car is to expensive
Nice! I hope the purchase goes smoothly
how much would you pay for one I have 2 of them considering selling them. they both need cats I have 1 cat to go with 1 needs a front rear brake job also `1 has a dented front fender and they both need 12v battery's hybrid battery's on both cars are good. If you can come up with 5,000.00 you can have the both
What you’re missing is that Honda didn’t make a hybrid. Unless the brand new ones have changed, no Honda could move under battery power alone. Therefore, no Honda ever earned a carpool lane sticker.
Should I buy Prius gen 1 in 2024 with 204k ?
Did you buy it?
This car still looks way better that the current 4th gen that looks like it was designed by a meth-head.
Enjoyed this review, Aunt Barbara adores you!
I think this car will become very, very expensive in the future.
Why?
@@jtstanley26 because it is historic
Just bought mine at auction with 215k miles, still runs great, ac runs cold, a cat code (hopefully just needs a cleaning), 80 bucks a month on gas tops. Love it.
I am also thinking of buying one on auction at 140k miles! Any info I should know? Thanks :)
Great review and comprehensive. I will say that with the removal of the Two Bolt, the rear seats do in fact fold down! For North America they were bolted up due to legislation at the time. A simple mod and my Prius practicality was unbelievable. I loved this car so much and even retrofitted factory navigation (which was terrible even for the time, making a 'legal U-turn' on a highway, really!!!). But cost of repairs was heinous and the 12V battery a whopping $550 every 2.5 years obliterated any fuel savings. But it drove excellently, extremely refined and was faster on the highway than the second gen Prius due to its tremendous torque figure. Also, it still has the highest in EV mode Top Speed of any Toyota Hybrid at 67km/h!!!
The Gen 2 Prius had 295 lb-ft. Gen 1 had 258.
I love the prius. If you hold the gas pedal down a quarter or the way it engages the gas and electric really well for good acceleration. I discovered that in my 2013 fusion hybrid. It's the same for all hybrids wirh ecvts. I smoked a new corolla hybrid from the light! He was trying too. Wasn't close 😂
So I bought one of these and to my surprise, I get better mileage on the highway than city; at least according to the car's computer.
Highway was in the 50s and city high 30s (maybe 38).
That's good!
Maybe needs a battery replacement
How ugly a car should be
Prius: YES
I bought my first gen in 2021 with 100,000 miles on it and every maintenance record ever
Same here but 170k love this car because of how cheap it is to drive
Old Toyota interiors are so strong)
You deserve more attention!!
Thank you!
10:28 back when my Dad had his 97 Accord, it had that magnetic mirror
I really like the touch!
it looks great for having 160,000mi
Does this car have cruise control?
Too bad Camry did not have that gear shifter. Makes inside so spacious with no counsol.
So the 2004 Gen 1 has a different body than the blue one shown in this video?
2004 is the Gen 2
How about battery is it required to replace during long time of use the vehicle???
Gas millage will start to drop as the battery gets old. You don’t have to replace it but you should.
It is a good investment!
I save a whole lot on gas
Cheap on parts
And tires and insurance..
I bought my Prius in 2020 with only 35,xxx miles . I’m hope to pass 300,xxxk out of it .
I bought it to save money and gas !
This car was that slushious from the 2015 movie home was based off of. Its a nostalgic childhood movie
My 2005 Yaris has the same nonusable Map/Navigation buttons. Really peeves me.
It’s pretty common practice for car manufacturers to use one panel or head unit to save on manufacturing costs, but make some buttons blanks so customers have to pay for the feature
@@SaleProofCarReviews fairly easy to add the OEM Toyota navigation system if you want it. Toyota and Lexus made many vehicles in this era with navigation, and any Toyota navigation computer of this era will work.
@14:17 Wrecked Nissan Leaf
@14:40 USPS FFV 😆
I'm gonna start driving all the cars I review just to see more car spotting comments like this
Great video. Although i must say the side vent is fake actually. Also on european and Japanese Market the rear seats actually fold
side vent is functional pulls in air to cool the batteries
Have an 02 Prius in Indiana. Motor is missing out and stumbling. Can’t figure. Who other than Toyota Dealer has knowledge on these.?
Don
Are there any independent mechanics in your area that have been certified or previously certified in Toyota hybrid product?
I think they're very comfortable. I love the sound of the CD player and the radio. I'm going to get me one and I'm going to get rid of my Mini Van. The only thing that I don't like about it it doesn't sync with my phone
You can buy a bluetooth cassete and sync it with your phone
Find French car why toyota can't find strange cars no more
most reliable prius
Probably the gen 2
Great investments.
He talks like chills....
How is the leg room? I'm 6'3".
Not bad at all and I'm 6'2
The man driving in this video seems to be around the same height as well also.
I drive a gen 2 Prius and I'm 6'5" 😂
