    Great video. You don't see any of these cars on the road anymore. I bought a 2012 Toyota Auris/Corolla Hybrid (it is really a Prius with a 1.8 engine and the same electric motor and e-CVT). I bought her two years ago, and have had no mechanical or electric problems either. The only things I had to get done were the tires and the underneath of the car with some very high-quality rubber sealant. I get fantastic gas mileage, usually about 67 to 88 mpg UK. With nearly 120 K miles on the odo she still drives pretty much like new. Most other cars tend to fall apart or start to have major engine issues after 100,000 miles.

    I have a 2002 Silver Prius. I also bought it from a doctor's wife! It only had 32,000 miles on it and still had the new car smell. That was in 2010. I let my son use it while he was in college and he rear ended another car on the freeway. I ended up rebuilding it myself and still love it.

    I was excited when I found a 2002 with 38k miles but after watching your video I'm shocked at how the prices have skyrocketed in CA. Currently the one I'm eyeing is almost $8k and was priced for $7k a few weeks ago :(. I'm trying to justify it but it's hard after seeing your great find

      It's because of the ridiculous gas prices. If you wanted a gas sipper, it may be too late. Nows the time to start picking up the gas guzzlers that are otherwise great vehicles. Lol

    I bought the exact year and color in Feb. 2017 here in Phoenix from a lot. 110,00 original miles then. Salvage title. $2500. Not as nice as yours, but I love it. I didn't even get cruise control.
    Only real issue; the electric coolant pump for the electric motor went out about 2K miles after purchase. They are expected to last 100k before going out. No biggie. Did the swap myself.
    When I told friends I got a Prius, and they give me that "Eww, you did what?" look, and then they actually see it, they suddenly go "Wait, that's a Prius?"
    BTW, the 1st gen Prius is essentially a hybrid Echo.

Pretty excited to get a daily driver with good gas mileage. Just sold off my beat, smokey, oil dripping 1999 honda CR-V so this is it's replacement. Looking locally I got a great deal! I was the first caller and there were 5 people to come check it out after me so I had to get it. It had great acceleration and felt tight on the sharp turns up in the mountains. @@thecollegepicker haha I drove it for about an hour home. It was originally bought in NJ and driven to ME where it was driven 42K miles until 2016, then up 15K up until now. Those years in ME caused rust on the front right corner (RIGHT behind passenger wheel). It had two previous accidents from original owner (cough cough lady driver) within 2 years (btw 2004-2006). Other than those marks it's great! Speakers suck compared to my modded Civic (2015 exl with alpines and a subwoofer), and the road noise by the windows is a little louder. Other than that, solid ride. Total creampuff, I named her Ev-A like Wall-E and she'll be my business car for my non-profit. Good deal overall. The 2,750 didn't include sales tax-etx (about 250 more but still solid deal when I do Uber eats drives or Lyft) that's my goal! Thanks for replying so fast!

    Stumbled onto this video after searching for stuff on an 01 Prius I was just gifted by my brother in-law. He only had short drives to work and was part-time at the time so it would sit for days at a time, so I don't think that kind of driving cycle was conducive to battery health. The 12v battery died, got replaced, died again (would take days/weeks). He parked it and got a different car. A year and a half later I pick it up to get it checked out. Replace the 12v battery, start it up, and it seems to drive fine minus a few things (whirring noise, bouncy). But no check engine lights or triangle. Take it to a hybrid repair shop for a diagnostic and see what, if anything, the car needs and he says the battery is "weak" but still working. No clue how long it will last. Replace a rear wheel bearing and 2 front struts, replace spark plugs, do oil change, get new tires...and its driving GREAT. I also added a Grom Aux adapter and plugged a bluetooth adapter to it for my phone so now I have bluetooth from my phone for calls and music. Working out great so far. Crossing my fingers that the HV battery lasts a while. It is what I'm finding to be a unique color though...dark green. Only downside is the clear coat is peeling all around the car so it doesn't necessarily look great, but im just using it as a work commuter now so...whatever. Good deal either way!

    Looks like a creampuff for sure! I think you got a heck of a good deal! If you only keep it for 2 years your cost of ownership (just on purchase price) would be less than $3/day. It's not something I would buy--it's just not practical for me, my wife and my needs. Besides that, winter is pure D Hell on Prius's up here. They are made for places like where you live--warm.
    I don't know a whole heck of a lot about Prius's aside from they have a gas engine and an electric motor, get good mileage and are fairly well built.
    That Doctor's wife sure did take care of it! Looks almost new to me. My grandmother was like that with her Oldsmobiles--always garaged, always washed (she had a cadre of grandkids to do that) and grandpa always made sure it was maintained.
    Ya done did good, brother! Nice!

    Damn, yeah good deal especially for the condition. '02 Prius "very good" condition is showing $3,000 in Southern California. You can get several years out of this thing. I think a brand new Toyota battery is less than $2,000 and can be done by 2 people (need help lifting, ITS HEAVY) in 1 day; and there are several UA-cam videos on it.
    AND I BELIEVE that Toyota will replace the battery for free if it dies before 150,000 miles (maybe not yours though cause its already replaced).
    Good job man, Freeload Life. 😎

      I think the battery at 150k is a California thing. The warranties are much better there. If it dies I'll try to replace dead cells, if it keep giving issues I'll try to build a 2nd gen pack to fit in our buy a 2nd gen reman to fit in a gen 1.

    Hey again! It has been two weeks since I posted an update on my 2002 Gen 1 Prius pack refurbishing and here it is! The pack is back in the car and works GREAT! I found 14 used modules from three different sellers on Ebay and they all worked fine. Although 2 were sent back as defective during load testing. Of course I got a refund for those.
    But now the NEW problem is the exhaust system! Now that the engine runs again it is LOUD! So I crawl under the car and find a bunch of little holes all around the back side of the first catalytic convertor! Ugh! I also suspect the gasket between the catastrophic confounder and manifold is leaking too. I am currently struggling with getting the bolts loose from there. They are super tight and rusted bad. I dont own a torch to cut them off either. So I am letting some Kroil soak into the rusty threads for a few days before trying again. I will keep you posted. This in addition to the usual Old Car issues of thin brake linings, dents and dirt that needs attention.

    • @thecollegepicker
      @thecollegepicker  5 років тому

      Thanks for the update. I sadly got the triangle two days ago. Car still drives. Noise coming from battery vent in rear left side. Pack might be going soon ☹️ debating replacing the whole thing or trying to find the dead packs. 🥺 Wish me luck on it 🤙

    • @michael47lamb
      @michael47lamb 5 років тому +1

      @@thecollegepicker Bummer news. However no need or do anything drastic, yet. First thing to do is find out what is really going on in the car. Also STOP driving the car around until you know what's what. If the problem is the battery continuing to drive around will mess up the cells more and more until nothing can rescue at least a few of them. I am certain that is what happened to my 02. The last owner drove the car until the thing stopped running totally and was towed away. There is nothing to be gained from destroying a otherwise repairable battery pack.
      The Master Warning (Red Triangle of Death) is a general warning that a number of things unrelated to the battery can trigger. Get the ECU codes read. If you own a scanner tool use it. Look up the P number. If it is in the 3000's it is probably the battery, but still no need to panic, yet. If the code is something other than the battery learn about how to fix it. Sometimes the fix is as simple as cleaning the MAF sensor (that takes all of 10 minutes) and then resetting the computer.
      Next, or maybe first, get a copy of Dr. Prius and the OBD2 bluetooth adapter to work with it. (Veepeak and Panlong are my current favs) That costs all of $11on Amazon. Dr. P is free on Google Play and works with all Android phones. Once you have Dr. P working for you, you will see quickly what pairs of modules (aka Blocks) are misbehaving. The modules are numbered Right to Left as you are facing the rear of the car (with the battery cover off of course. But dont take off the cover until you watch a couple vids on how to do this safely. There is potentially 300 Volts in there!) I will search out a couple vids I liked and post links here later. Some vids are MUCH better than others, believe me!

    • @michael47lamb
      @michael47lamb 5 років тому +1

      @@thecollegepicker I also forgot to mention before that the noise in the trunk you hear is the battery box ventilation fan kicking into high speed. When that happens it is either very warm weather where you are, or the battery is getting hotter in some other way. Maybe a failing cell, maybe not too. Again, Dr. Prius is pretty good at telling you what's up in there. Let me know if you want any help with the repair.
      Replacing the entire pack is an expensive option but also more practical if you dont like working around electricity (like I do.) There are LOTS of places selling refurbished Prius packs. Be careful who you buy from though, lots of cheaters out there too. One of the most reputable groups I know of is Bumblebee Battery. Talk to Ryan, tell him I sent you. And since you also asked for this: Good luck as well!

    Hi again Just wanted to post an update on my 2002 Prius (the beat up twin to yours!) pack rebuilding project. Turns out I have 14 bad modules (not 13 like I thought before) and a couple of the ones from ebay were defective as well and so I reordered them. The seller was really nice about refunds too. :-)
    So, ALWAYS buy modules that have been tested (or at least claim to have been) with a load tester! Not just a voltmeter. Using only a voltmeter like the seller did to judge a module is a sure road to disaster, just like that seller on ebay found out, and me too for that matter. If I had not identified these defective modules and they went into the car that pack would have likely died again in a few months. Never just install modules without testing them first. Bad mistake.

      @@thecollegepicker No problem. I will be posting more here as I get things done. In the meantime you may want to start gathering up a few things before you think on starting a battery project. Stuff that you will need is at least one NiMh charger (I like using 2 since I can go twice as fast.) I also like the cheapie knockoff IMaxB6 (about $30 ea. at ebay, amazon, etc.) You will also want a "Carbon Pile battery load tester." Make sure it has these words in the description, other types dont hold up as well. I found a nice one on Amazon for about $79 (it has a Amp and Volt meter and a big knob to make small adjustments as you work the cells.) You will also need a decent volt ohm meter. Nothing fancy, digital is nice. About $20 for a decent one most anywhere.
      In case you haven't guessed yet, I have been doing this to hybrids for some years now and have learned a thing or three. Always happy to share with those who want to know, (done that a few hundred times over the years too.) LoL.
      BTW, I own a 2002 and a 2003 Prius and two 2003 Civic hybrids. I've had my Civic packs apart a great many times over the years. Those cars are a bad design compared to the early Prius, I tell you! Civics are easier to work on though. Eg, I can have a Civic pack out, apart rebalanced and back in the car in a day usually. The Prius not so much, it is a lot heavier and many more nuts and bolts to remove! Good thing the Prius doesn't need rebalancing very often.
