    Yup. Been using it for 30 years. If you want to make it slightly more friendly to plastic, take the acetone away and put the same amount of kerosene or diesel fuel in the place of that acetone. Not quite as strong but it won't burn up everything it touches either.

    • @HardKnocksForge

      I’ll have to get a new oiler and throw put some diesel in and give her a try. Thanks

    It works great for freeing up stuck ratchets or ratcheting wrenches too, Just let them soak overnight and blow them out with air. The gunk(technical term) comes right out. I've freed up a few garage sale ratchets without having to take them apart. It helps lube them too. Lube... lube.. that word just sounds dirty, Like "moist". I've heard you can get high from huffing acetone but I'm a bit more refined and prefer the high that comes from painting cars without a mask.

    • @HardKnocksForge
      @HardKnocksForge  6 років тому

      Yeah painting cars without a mask is the only way to paint cars. It's just not any fun with a mask. I just used the 50/50 mix for freeing up my old set of Klein's yesterday and it worked like a charm.

    I learned that mix in boot camp in the 70's we used it to clean and lubricate our weapons , great stuff . You can also substitute the acetone with denatured alcohol for a not so caustic mix .

    • @HardKnocksForge
      @HardKnocksForge  7 років тому

      Wade , BigRedneckPoppa I was wondering if you could use alcohol instead of acetone. Only reason I thought of that was that both of them evaporate so fast and are hard on rubber. I'll have to try that when this container runs out. Either way it's way cheaper than a $12 can of kroil.

      I just picked up a 20oz can at HFT. It has metal internals, plus one steel and one plastic nozzle.
      I went to get the link for you at HFTs site and behold, someone reviewed it that made this mix. The one that I got is slightly different from the one pictures.
      m.harborfreight.com/20-oz-flexible-spout-oil-can-1113.html
      This ought to mean less concern about the acetone eroding the rubber parts.
      Just a heads up.

    • @HardKnocksForge
      @HardKnocksForge  7 років тому +1

      SHAKA38 I'll look next time I'm at HFT for a different can. The one in the link looks like the one I have. I'm not sure how long it will last. I've also put this mix in a plastic bottle with a pumper like a hairspray bottle and it lasted for over a year before it wouldn't pump anymore. I did have to keep adding acetone to it because it didn't seal very tight and the acetone would evaporate. Thanks for the heads up.

      I knew I'd run into someone who has used this before. I absolutely love it and it's what I grab before I grab anything else. It works like all the others like to advertise that they work. Also fingered that there were other guys that needed to know about this. Makes things way less stressful in the shop when you know something is going to work and won't be a problem anymore.

    I have heard about that trick on another video & I'm soaking my dads Honda lawnmowers cylinder in that mix overnight because it has been burning oil on startup only for a few minutes,then it won't burn any oil.
    I want to rule out sticking piston rings first before spending money on new piston rings, usually, with the Honda 4 stroke lawnmower engines,
    it is worn rings that causes it.
    It has lost 7 psi of compression from brand new,so I want to rule out if they are just sticking before replacing the rings,sometimes it won't burn oil & sometimes it will let clouds of smoke out,so I have to find out why.
    A wet compression test brings the compression up to as new specifications.

    • @HardKnocksForge
      @HardKnocksForge  5 років тому +2

      It’s bad rings. Not sure how they are bad but if you gain compression with a squirt of oil on the top of the piston then the rings are either worn or have moved around on the piston and have lined up the gaps, causing the oil to blow past the rings. I’d pull the exhaust off and check the cylinder wall also. If you see a bunch of scoring then it’d be time to replace the block, rings and piston, IF you wanted to fix it. It’s a lot of work and is expensive. Most guys just buy a new engine as it’s not that much more expensive and will come with a warranty.

      After I watched this video not long after it was made, I went and bought this exact oiler can from this video. The next time I needed to use it the acetone had completely melted the paint around the lid and sealed it tight like jb weld! I had a heck of a time getting it apart. After that I found a few old oilcans on ebay. Like he says watch the rubber gasket. But you can use a cork gasket, just as good and probably lasts a lot longer.

      It's highly flammable, yes, as with most things that are in the industrial/automotive/agricultural/construction fields. It works like a charm and is cheap as hell to make though. Acetone also eats up rubber and orings like they are nothing. Caution should be used when making and applying 50/50 to anything you are working on. I've only found one pump that has actually worked worth a crap with this 50/50 mix also. Every oiler or pump out there gets ate up by the acetone mix. It's pretty corrosive stuff.
