Washington failed Hawaii but, of course, scapegoated Kimmel and Short.
Just FYI: after repairs and modernization, the USS Nevada participated in the bombing of Utah Beach on D-Day, then sailed back to the Pacific in time to help shell Okinawa before we took it. She was an amazing ship with an amazing history- all ended when they used her as a target during Operation Crossroads. Sad ending for a galant lady.
The zero wasn’t better the Wildcat was superior and had similar performance and better armor and by war’s end had a 6:1 kill ratio
Maybe he was talking about which was better at the time of Pearl Harbor since the hellcat didn't go into production until 1942
@@jtzoltan I meant the F4F. The f6f had a 19:1 ratio.
The biggest difference was in pilot experience. The Japanese pilots had been in combat for several years and they were good. The Americans were combat rookies. It took time for them to learn how to use the F4F or P40 strengths against the A6M Zero.
@@steveschainost7590 actually in September 1942 the first month Saratoga’s fighter squadron was at Guadalcanal they had a slightly better than 1:1 record against the zero (Saratoga took a torpedo and needed repairs, she was good at that) after that they started to devise special techniques to increase their kills (beyond the Thatch weave) including forcing the zeroes to engage at higher altitudes and speeds where the zero had less power, more fuel consumption, and poor maneuverability.
