When I listened to your video, I nearly cried. That is exactly what I sound like! You are 100% accurate with this and I appreciate the confirmation.
I lost a halfway decent singing voice after covid and experiencing excessive coughing. It hasn't gone back to normal after a year but I didn't know what to do about it, so I hope some of these videos help. I miss singing in a choir for the holidays and just for the joy of singing to myself and I don't know how I'll go the rest of my life if it doesn't reverse.
I’m sorry you went through that. I’ve never had great lungs but you can try to do breathing exercises to get back on track. I’m in a choir now and I definitely recommend it. You don’t have to be the best singer to have fun.
You need to enter a committed vocal restoration state. An ENT can inform with precision. But it's possible you have nodules. Which can be stubborn and take dedicated rest/therapy alternating to restore.
I always thought I was singing wrong but now I realize that my allergies are probably causing vocal cord swelling. That's a relief honestly. I'll definitely talk to my doctor about it. Awesome video!

I had a sore throat for a couple hours last week as i was singing in the car for fun well out of my range. I stopped when my throat got sore and my voice went raspy. I couldn't do falsetto with it as i were just squeaking and when i tried to sing i sounded like Rod Stewart. Lesson learned not to abuse your voice because you can do some serious damage.
I remember having a cough that was so bad, that even when I thought about what I wanted to say aloud, BANG! I still haven't recovered my full range and it's been scaring me to death. Listening to you with the airy onset, trying to get the note to come is exactly what I'm experiencing. See what it can and cannot handle at this time, and gradually rebuild your strength, endurance, and coordination. The rehabilitation process is the next stage. I sort of worked myself into a similar condition simply by training TOO much....too long per session. I was doing tons of sirens and each individual siren would actually be a double siren....bottom to top, back to bottom, back to top again. So I did 5 of those double sirens on each of 10 different vowels. So thats either 50 or 100 sirens depending on how you cant them. Then id do "chest pulling" sirens where id siren up and carry it as high as possible WITHOUT bridging into headvoice. So thats another 50 sirens. Then id do a 3rd exercise on all 10 vowels. That would be done at work stretched out over several hours. I was doing the sirens pretty lightly and at first it worked a charm. My voice got powerful and free and i was singing everything in sight. Bridging thru the passagios got to be a non event and I was doing all vowels up to f5-f#5 pretty smoothly. After a while I started making the sirens a bit heavier and more supported etc. That routine was done 4x per week plus of course whatever other singing id do. Naturally in the morning on the way to work I might put on some music and start blasting along with David Coverdale or Chris Cornell....without much warming up lol. Eventually I started noticing it was getting a bit harder to get my full top range and it was also getting trickier to bridge thru my passagios. I was worried and even considered seeing an ENT. Finally I ran across some of Mark Baxter's vids about vocal damage and swelling etc where he recommended soft humming to help heal the vocal folds. I started being way more careful about warming up and cooling down and doing plenty of easy humming work to balance off the hard training and so far things are back to being nice and strong. I always check it with very soft singing to make sure its nice and bright without much effort and without the delayed onset as you demonstrated. On thing that confuses the issue is that i train at work while driving a stand up forklift and its an air conditioned warehouse. So with my mouth open singing I get cold air blasted into my mouth and it seems my soft/hard palate wants to start feeling dry after about an hour and it starts to cause a snag right in the passagio. Im hoping thats more of a dryness thing and not a swelling thing. Peace, JJ
I will, sweet. I got sick about a week back with a cold and me throat and me voice have felt mashed ever since- (throat-pain, vocal-cord tightness, unable to sing completely- you name it!)
Cockney Rebel plz get urself examined by an otolaryngologist and keep inhaling steam thrice a day (5-10 minutes each time). Steam, water and adequate vocal rest would help u.
My voice has developed a "hole" in the lower mid range. About 3 whole steps are rattling, hoarse, cracking, or no sound at onset. Low notes turn to dust. I can't get past or around it. The rest of the voice fine. ENT doesn't see any obvious damage. If you have and ideas....or exercises. I have a concert in a week. Only 1 piece. I picked one that doesn't have much in the troubled range. Scared, nervous, frustrated.
Please get scoped by an ENT or laryngologist! Find out exactly what's happening and then find out if speech therapy is indicated. Please keep me updated.
I mean. You can actually talk. If talking hurts, and my voice feels and is weak, and breaks into head voice. What is that? And how can I recover? 4 weeks of this now
Thanks for showing the demonstration while sick. I hope you are better Now?. I have a sore throat and this is the second time I am having it due to the very dusty and cold season in the region where I live in. Is it advisable to still sing while having a sore -throat?
I’m dealing with this too, i had a short fit of rough coughing on Monday and now for 2 days my voice has a had a tiny delay and my upper chest voice is now just air, it only works if I increase volume so I’m just having some honey, warm water, gargling salt and doing gentle vocal practice
My voice sometimes “vibrates” when I sing... idk what it is, I haven’t found anything on it. Idk how else to describe it, it switches back and forth between the note I’m trying to sing and a different one. Doesn’t happen when I sing softly tho. I have allergies with a persistent cough and used to have bronchitis a lot as a kid, so that’s probably what caused it :/
Try someone else. My local town no one can help me. Ive needed to find a specialist who understamds singers out of my small town. Becuase for years theyve said im fine but i know they r wromg.
I've had this since I was 15 but I've never smoked. I don't know what causes it because without it my singing would be so much better. It restricts so much of my range.
I sing all my life and lately I have a hard time I can’t seem to push my voice I do have rheumatoid arthritis I’m thinking it’s affecting my voice I love singing I’m almost tempted to give up
Hello! What did you do to recover from this episode of vocal fold swelling? I have been experiencing this late onset sound since the middle of September. Thank you for your help!
Please help! First off thanks for making this video! and second, I had a bad case of bronchitis and as a result developed severe inflammation and eventually vocal nodules. But right before I was diagnosed I went a saw a chiropractor for a routine back adjustment. For some reason he took it upon himself to "fix" my voice issue by cracking my neck and because of that I now have Tinnitus, and I'm beginning to suspect it's heavily impeding the healing process as my throat and ear are in this constant pain. It's been 2 months since the diagnosis but 4 months that I've been having difficulty speaking. Have you ever come across this kind of thing? Could the chiropractor have caused some misalignment that is making it impossible for the inflammation to stop?
Recently I decided to train my voice again. I haven't sang for a long time. Thanks to youtube I learned a lot and I saw improvements. But I notice that I sometimes feel soreness but not on the throat but more on the nasal cavity. What could I be doing wrong? I have been practicing resonance, mix and expanding my range. I have a deep voice, so I want to increase my range. I am concerned of damaging something but I still want to continue practicing. I also get that delay sometimes when I sing quietly. I wish I would know exactly what to do, to avoid these problems to stay or come back.
My voice doesn’t always make this breathy sound always, but it’s been painful to talk and sing for 2 years, just a few weeks after my heartburn started. I’m hoarse everyday, my voice starts sounding breathy and silent when I start singing songs that don’t have the highest tone and my throat has so much phlegm that I can barely breathe. My mom’s still refusing to take me to an ENT.
im going through the same thing! for more than a year now! our only friend right now is the internet. dont give up hope. we can heal our bodys ourselves, we just need to keep searching for the right methods for our bodies!
Hi i am a rock singer the last three months i couldnt sing as i used to be i couldn't sing a hole single song and when i tried my voice become weak ... You can hear my talking normally but singing no so i went to the Doctor he experienced that i have nodules in one of the vocal chords which made me wonder cz i know that nodules appears one both folds any way i nead some advices for a treatment and also i had some cough during the day bcz of nasal issues such ass allergies
I recently (like a coupe days ago) had overnight congestion that turned into a sore throat and eventually, difficulty vocalizing. I could barely speak in a scratchy modal voice and even at that had to stay very light or else it would break like nuts. Anytime I tried vocalizing I'd flip up into this breathy, squealy register and when this would happen it felt like there was a physical obstruction. This is the most typical way my voice responds to being very sick or fatigued. Thankfully, it has only persisted a couple days but I felt so helpless to not even be able to hum. Unfortunately, it feels as if my voice constantly has a low degree of these sort of symptoms (especially first thing in the morning) and it will take about 30 mins to just warm up. Is there a way I could reduce this warming up time, or any tips in addition to a humidifier that will assist in maintaining overall better vocal health and clarity? Thanks Karen appreciate your help :)
It sounds like you probably have some allergies (and post nasal drip is a symptom). That leaves us with a ton of 'gunk' in our throats that needs to be cleared. I take antihistamines year round - not ideal, but they at least keep the allergy symptoms bearable - which do thicken the mucous. I have to counter that with extra fluids, including humidifiers on every floor of my home. If the mucous is really thick and copious, I'll take a Fisherman's Friend (menthol and eucalyptus) to help clear things, but only if I have to sing in the morning. Otherwise, I wait until the afternoon or early evening before singing. When I do, I don't really have to do any warming up at all. You may find that vocal fry shakes things loose faster than ordinary phonatory tasks.
Hi Karen thanks for getting back to me! I have a feeling this is what it is. I'll be getting myself some Fisherman's Friend and I'll see about taking a daily allergy medication :)
I have a very low voice naturally. I thought I had vocal fold swelling, but unless it can manifest in other ways, probably not. Am able to sing at a low volume quite comfortably. Just not high pitch. Which basically means I need more practice, not rest. lol
I am pretty sure I have nodules and have had them for years now. I've had this airy onset and just a hoarse voice for a long time now and I absolutely hate when I can't sing properly, especially the hight notes, the sound is just not coming out, only air. Trying to get my GP to refer me to an Otolaryngologist to check on my vocal chords and hoping for a further treatment. If needed I am ready for an operation. I'll do anything to get my normal voice back.
Sir, I am untrained singer [boy][17 years] , just sung up high note of male [ A4] and sung female high note in female voice [C5] for a month and at the sudden I can hear my voice air rushing or a scratchy sound in communicating voice . Just took a break of 3 weeks but in 3 weeks I suffered from constant throat clearing and the scratchy voice. ? Sir, what to do sir? Did I damage my vocal cord ?
I have a cough also. Have been too docs and they have no answers. It's not asthma or bronchitis or any respiratory issues. I get the rasp/whisper sound also, that delay of sound. Help?
Hi Karen, when I get like this, it's how I would define frustration. Nothing works no quick fixes. One question. You mentioned cuperto exercises,. How are the different than a pitch glide using straws other than allowing a vowel change
Flow resistant straws definitely do promote the acoustical protection of the voice (closed voice/voce chiusa), so the goal is the same. I use straws, as well as a 'tiny /u/,' which encourages a similar semi-occluded mouth shape and a positive back pressure within the vocal tract. They both work well in tandem. But the traditional 'cuperto' exercise usually involves use of an /u/ vowel.
Hello! I think I’m suffering from the same vocal swelling problem, and I was wondering what you did to recover? Right now I’m drinking plenty of water and only speaking when necessary (no singing or rapping), but if there’s anything else that helped you, I’d really love to know about it! Thank you!
Thank you very much. I have the same problem. When I try and sing, the voice gets irritated and I start hawking and coughing. What should I do to get better? My specialty is belting like Chaka Khan, but I can just forget trying ...... it cracks ..... sounds like a tired rocky singer. what to do?
This is happening to me and I feel my voice not as "free" as before, I haven't lose vocal range but my voice gets tired easily, can't speak loud anymore or I get "pain" in my throat. Please, help. I'm not a professional singer but I love to sing.
i made my voice like this from yelling anyone know how long until ill have my whole voice back i have a decent range and singing used to be very easy for me
Yesterday i was singing without you by mariah carey up to my top range and strained....now i feel there is something in my throat and it make me uncomfortable, but there is no change with my voice. What is happening to me? And Someone just told me that my voice is sit a lot lower, what does that mean?
If your voice is 'sitting a bit lower,' it's possible that you do have swelling. The swelling weighs down the vocal folds, and that can cause your speaking pitch to be lower. Take a vocal rest day and see how your voice feels tomorrow. Don't sing anything too intense. Just do some gentle humming on scales and see how the voice responds.
I did. This isn't a fast food restaurant. I believe that knowing why and how something happens is critical to our understanding of how to prevent and treat it. Vocal fold swelling has many sounds and causes. It's important for me to do more than just demonstrate; I need to also explain what's happening so that my viewers can understand it better.

Peace, JJ
Thanks for sharing your experience.
This is so helpful!! The exact same thing is happening to me right now and I had no idea why. Thank u!
Hope you are doing better.
I think I might be going through this again now. At least I hope it's only vocal-fold swelling and not bloody nodes. o.o
Oh no! Take it easy on your voice and get checked out.
I will, sweet. I got sick about a week back with a cold and me throat and me voice have felt mashed ever since- (throat-pain, vocal-cord tightness, unable to sing completely- you name it!)
And yes, that bloody cough again, but really viciously so.
Cockney Rebel plz get urself examined by an otolaryngologist and keep inhaling steam thrice a day (5-10 minutes each time). Steam, water and adequate vocal rest would help u.
Glad this was years ago ... if was now you know what could be
what i have it now and i hate it
like its just when i talk
Thank you, I have a similar situation but way worse, you can clearly hear it. I can sound low and high pitch at the same time.
So in a situation like this, forget about going on a performance?!
Nice information, thanks Karyn!
Thank you so so much. This is what I have but 24/7 for a few years now. It may be over for me haha. Thank you again! ❤
Please get scoped by an ENT or laryngologist! Find out exactly what's happening and then find out if speech therapy is indicated. Please keep me updated.
singwisevocals will do ! Thank you 👌🏽 I'll post a video soon of what I sound like.
The Dr.'s name is Dr. Robert Bastian of Bastian Voice Institute.
I’m dealing with this too, i had a short fit of rough coughing on Monday and now for 2 days my voice has a had a tiny delay and my upper chest voice is now just air, it only works if I increase volume so I’m just having some honey, warm water, gargling salt and doing gentle vocal practice
extremely helpful as I do have it all the time and don't know what to do...
My voice sometimes “vibrates” when I sing... idk what it is, I haven’t found anything on it. Idk how else to describe it, it switches back and forth between the note I’m trying to sing and a different one. Doesn’t happen when I sing softly tho. I have allergies with a persistent cough and used to have bronchitis a lot as a kid, so that’s probably what caused it :/
Getting over laryngitis and trying to get my voice back. I have the same breathiness :(
hi! 3 years later haha but did your voice fully recover? im in that situation rn and panicked!!
@@imogensuggett6703 Did you recover Imogen?
@@Mint-kj9kwdid you recover mint 😭
Yeah I'm a beginner I overused my vocal chords with too much power and air, and right now I have this. Is it going to dissapear after rest?
My ent said everything looked great but I can literally feel something in my vocal cords and it makes my breathing shaky
Try someone else. My local town no one can help me. Ive needed to find a specialist who understamds singers out of my small town.
Becuase for years theyve said im fine but i know they r wromg.
ME TOO!!!!!
I don’t know what to do... so disappointed...
@@nusabygrace Same here:( my voice just does feel right. I suspect, it could be muscle tension dysphonia which is not curable by your regular ENTs.
Thank you for this. Someone just informed me that I probably have nodules. I do not think so, but I’ve come quite close.
I've had this since I was 15 but I've never smoked. I don't know what causes it because without it my singing would be so much better. It restricts so much of my range.
Can you please make a video on how you rehabilitate your voice following hoarseness from "over-belting"? thanks.
I sing all my life and lately I have a hard time I can’t seem to push my voice I do have rheumatoid arthritis I’m thinking it’s affecting my voice I love singing I’m almost tempted to give up
Thanks
Hello! What did you do to recover from this episode of vocal fold swelling? I have been experiencing this late onset sound since the middle of September. Thank you for your help!
My voice personally it start to sound like vocal fry like the grudge almost and really raspy when I try to yell or in head voice nothing comes out
Is vocal chords swelling painful like a lump in your throat?
How long does the vocal chord swelling last?
Does it always seem like theres a frog in your throat?
Really important!! Thank you!!
Man I am going through the same thing if you have recovered then please let me know how.
What are false vocal folds?
Great. Please keep me updated.
Exactly what I am dealing with
Sir, I am untrained singer [boy][17 years] , just sung up high note of male [ A4] and sung female high note in female voice [C5] for a month and at the sudden I can hear my voice air rushing or a scratchy sound in communicating voice .
Help?
I think your screechiness sounds cool 👍
Thank you!
wow, I need help, i legit damaged my thought by pushing on it physically... sigh i had a weird tongue spasm issue and couldnt resist
I have the same problem. I lost my voice due to heart operation. Does the cough go away
So does this swelling eventually go away
Do you have exercises that help limit this problem after diagnosis?
I have bad allergies. So I have issues with having a tiny bit of rasp at the bottom end of the sound, any register.
Great
Thank you very much.
I’m having that exact situation, my voice has been getting tired much faster. Did it ever improve for you?
@@DodaGarcia It haven't. :(
So I sing much less now and it makes me terribly unhappy. How's in your side?
@Thahany Najim Thank you very much for the recommendation. 🥰
This whistle sound happens to me every time I do warm up on notes higher than e5! So scary and I can’t get rid of it! Is my vocal chords injured? 🤕😭
Omg my voice is exactly this w t f
i made my voice like this from yelling anyone know how long until ill have my whole voice back i have a decent range and singing used to be very easy for me
Asthma, same
Yesterday i was singing without you by mariah carey up to my top range and strained....now i feel there is something in my throat and it make me uncomfortable, but there is no change with my voice. What is happening to me?
And
Someone just told me that my voice is sit a lot lower, what does that mean?
If your voice is 'sitting a bit lower,' it's possible that you do have swelling. The swelling weighs down the vocal folds, and that can cause your speaking pitch to be lower. Take a vocal rest day and see how your voice feels tomorrow. Don't sing anything too intense. Just do some gentle humming on scales and see how the voice responds.
Oh lord that just happened to me right now. I coughed up some blood i am really scared now. 😭😭😭😭
I have swelling due to reflux
You sound better 😁
Thank you. I'm definitely a little better, but I have a ways to go yet.
singwisevocals I hope you will be better soon😀
Thank you.
I jus had to ask
My God will continue to bless and upgrade you DR RORPOPOR HERBAL on UA-cam, for saving the life of me and my sister from throat nodules💘
Just get to the point
