Colorado Florida was pretty surprising also. it was Colorado's first year after moving, and they got Roy half way through. Quebec had a decent team but I don't think anyone expected Colorado to make the finals and win in their first year after moving to a new market. Also, has anyone noticed that in the last 16 seasons including this one, there has been 16 different teams that lost in the finals? Even though 8 of the last 9 years were won by only 3 different teams, with Boston being the only exception.
LA in 2012 are predicted to be a Stanley Cup Contender and a President's Trophy Cup winners way before the season started but things fell out during that year for the Kings. At one point of near end of the 2011-12 RG season, the Kings are leading the Pacific Division but they fell down to 8th after that lost (can't remember the team) but they played like a dynasty team in the Playoffs that year.
I love how they have the playoffs now. Having to go though your division first and then the Conference and then the league is awesome. It's designed to create rivalries.
I disagree with Carolina in 2006. Many people thought that Carolina had a good shot at winning the cup because of the acquisitions that they made late in the season to get Doug Weight and Mark Recchi. Their only real question mark was goaltending.
In 2014 the Kings were down 0-3 and the Rangers down 3-1 at a point in the playoffs. The actual matchup wasnt surprising but the journey there was crazy
I was heart Broken when Ottawa lost to Anaheim, and was pissed because the one time my Sens made the finals happened to be a year where we were not top dog lol
I mean how could you not pick this year to be the most surprising stanley cup final? This is definitely one for the books. Everyone thought washington couldnt accomplish anything. and who would have thought an NHL team from las vegas in their first year would even come close to a stanley cup final?
Shannon...I love your videos man. Your great, truly I mean that. You've at least one fan here in Pennsylvania...but... Sometimes your audio sucks... Just some food for thought, a mic might work wonders.
I don’t know about New Jersey in 2012 but I remember l.a despite being last seed in the west did very well in analytics and were predicted to be very good
For the sake of the movie, this series is obviously going 7 games, 3OT with Schmidt scoring on his previous team for the victory, making it the greatest sports story of all time.
2014 was a surprise? How? The Kings were in the WCF three years in a row. The Rangers had had their best chance since 1994. What WAS a surprise was that the Kings faltered early and almost got swept by the Sharks. The Kings go on to reverse sweep them. Only to have to play two more 7 game series, and beat one of the best teams of the era. Once in the Final, it wasn't even a question. 2012, absolutely was a surprise. No doubts there. Not even I was expecting that run for the Kings. I didn't even start believing until game 3 of the series against Vancouver. But 2014, not a surprise. At all.
I was very surprised. They were down 3-0 against the Sharks in round one and Quick looked terrible. They had been 25th in goals for that year so the fact Quick didn't have to play like a world beater by himself that spring was a huge surprise.
Hehe, well then you weren't watching the team that closely that year. The regular season numbers didn't tell the story, and that wasn't surprising either. They also got Marian Gaborik at the deadline. We knew they'd be a different team in the playoffs. And they were. Gabbo went on to be red hot in the playoffs and scored 14 goals. But like I said the surprising element was the 7-2, and then 6-3 losses to the Sharks in the first two games. Quick faltered, the rock solid D faltered, and the offense was stymied. That gave us Kings fans a shock. No one expected 13 GA. But while the third game was a 5-4 OT loss, the tide had started to turn by then. The team we had expected finally showed up, and won six straight games after the first three losses. Then three close games against Anaheim, a good game 6, and a game 7 in which Anaheim was blown out 6-2. Then a classic, hard fought series against Chicago that hadn't been seen since the series against Toronto in 1993. That it was won in OT in game 7 was a perfect closing to the WCF. When they met the Rangers in the final, it was a foregone conclusion. There was no doubt in our minds, as Kings fans, that they'd beat New York. And they nearly swept them. Marty's OT goal was again, a perfect ending to a great season.
The last time I watched a Stanley Cup Final in its entirety was 20 years ago. I am still in complete shock and disbelief over the events that have taken place this spring. I now look forward to once again watching my Caps do battle in June, with hopefully a different outcome than that seen 2 decades ago. May this finally be the year of the mighty underdog Washington Capitals. #ALLCAPS
Because it was only AFTER the Northstars moved to the Lone star state - in the south that NHL told them they could not keep "North" in their name, hence Dallas Stars - they suck (GO WILD!) ;-)
🤣 2010 Final, Patrick Kane celebrating by himself and telling the boys he scored in a quiet and confused arena is one of my favorite moments watching hockey
I agree it has to be either of the 2 LA kings wins. Honestly I say it's 2012, for the reason that they took out the top 3 seeded teams in the west EASILY to get there. I mean they went 16-4 if I am not mistaken.
As a biased Sharks fan I would have to say the 2016 final was unexpected. I thought the sharks were permanently cursed after the fallout from the 2014 reverse sweep against the kings and Joe Thornton captaincy fallout. Plus, the penguins weren't really mentioned as a top team in the league since their cup run in 2009
1. '06 Final, and both teams' performance in following seasons reinforced it. 2. '95 Final. Detroit looked good that year but... until you get back there..., and New Jersey was the worst team south of Quebec only a few years before that. Even the diplomatic Gretzky called them a "Mickey Mouse team". 3. '12 Final might have been higher had I cared more. 4. '04 Final. Tampa'd never been there and "Calgary - Tampa final" sounded almost like an oxymoron 5. '10 Final. Chicago young core looked good that season but...until you get there...and Philly that season?! There's a common denominator in the top two, one that I don't like acknowledging: lockouts. Weird, unpredictable finals match-ups seem to follow them. They disrupt the momentum of some good teams and players.
You're forgetting that we're sort of in a multiple team dynasty already. Pittsburgh, Chicago, LA. They've pretty much been alternating finals appearances for the past 10 years
great work with those magnets! It's really way more enjoyable and it's easier to have an overview than having it written out VAN, NSH, DET, LAK, COL etc.
Love the jersey‼️👍❤️. We must be very close in age. 1981 is the first final I remember caring. I cheered North Stars. My cousin got traded to Oilers in early 80s and never looked back.
In 93 was the first time I ever thought that the league was fixed until the finals that is. Here's why. It was the last year that Toronto would be in the West because they remade the divisions the following year and everybody knew about it. So Pitsburg lost a series that they had NO business losing and there was an other overwhelmingly strong team that got knocked off before Montreal got to them that year. Montreal ended up with weak teams to beat to get to the finals. On the other side it was Toronto Vs LA and it went to a game 7 where Gretzky basically played a career game to win. Yeah without Gretzky I would still think that the league wanted Montreal Vs Toronto for the final time in the cup finals.
'86. Made the assumption that the Oilers would win again. But Calgary beats them... so clearly Calgary should win the cup... but no, the Habs??? So begins the conspiracy that Montreal is always awarded the cup in a year ending with a "6"... (until the Avs dispelled that in '96... but you'll note that ROY was in net for that one.) AND... '03. Was expecting an epic battle out west, with Detroit, Colorado, St. Louis, Dallas, and Vancouver all being powerhouse teams... but who ends up in the conference finals? The Ducks and the Wild. Did the President's Trophy-winning Senators make it to the finals? No... Jersey vs Anaheim. WHAT THE HECK?
I think besides this year, 2012 had to be my most most “wtf is this” final. The 8th seeded Kings beat the 1st seed Canucks, 2nd seed Blues, and 3rd seed Coyotes?? The Devils beat the Flyers in 5? They beat the 1st seed Rangers too?? It was such a weird, yet so much fun year.
I didn't find the second LA final that surprising. Coming into the playoffs, many people thought that LA would make it back to the cup because they had the same core they had before who were still pretty good. I'm pretty sure about 25% of people probably had LA in their brackets of getting to the finals or winning. First one, yah that was pretty surprising, but the second no way.
I agree. They won it once as an 8th seed. So I would be much less surprised if they did it again only 2 years later with an even better point total in the season.
Definitely a real shocker, if we polled every NHL fan last off-season this cup final would probably be like guessed by 3% of all fans. Very cool video idea as always
Coming into the season I had San Jose and Tampa, with Tampa winning it.. And I'm a Caps fan. Of course I suspected history would repeat year again and thought we were going to blow the second round.
at the start of the season I had Tampa beating Edmonton in the Cup final, I had Washington choking in the 1st round to Columbus and Vegas finishing 2nd last, Colorado was the only team I had listed worse off than Vegas at the start of the year
Hi THG, i was curious what your thoughts were on the Leafs hiring former Canucks AGM Lawerence Gilham? i think his name is. i figured you would have a lot of insight on that
The NHL will call 2 cups in 20 years as a Dynasty if it will help sell more tickets. They get that because there's never been a dynasty in the NHL that didn't have at least 3 cups in 4 years. You can look that up if you want. There's been 9 dynasties in total in the NHL starting with the Senators and ending with the Oilers.
Roope Toivanen Rangers are always too good to get a good draft pick, but not good enough to win a cup. This year is different though, as we have 3 firsts. Only problem is that they’re most likely not franchise players.
5:08 2006? lol
19 straight series won. Nobody can touch the 80-83 Islanders.
Life in the 413 Nobody cares about the Islanders
Where’s Tavares my guy
NOS u mad lol
Colorado Florida was pretty surprising also. it was Colorado's first year after moving, and they got Roy half way through. Caps and Vegas hands down the most surprising. Caps were chokers and Vegas is an expansion team
I couldn't agree more
I love how they have the playoffs now.
The Kings played 3 7-game series in a row to get to the 2014 Finals. It was absolutely insane.
Great video
I was heart Broken when Ottawa lost to Anaheim, and was pissed because the one time my Sens made the finals happened to be a year where we were not top dog lol
I like to refer to the Devils/Red Wings/Avalanche era as the "Trinasty"
Before the playoffs started I said Vegas vs Caps, Vegas in 6, still pretty happy I got the two finalists right
2009-2017, except 2011. Are pretty much alternated by LA, Chicago, and Pittsburgh.
I mean how could you not pick this year to be the most surprising stanley cup final? This is definitely one for the books. Everyone thought washington couldnt accomplish anything. and who would have thought an NHL team from las vegas in their first year would even come close to a stanley cup final?
Minn making it to the finals against Pitt-that one blindsided me!I was hoping Minn could pull off the upset.
Shannon...I love your videos man. Your great, truly I mean that. You've at least one fan here in Pennsylvania...but... Sometimes your audio sucks... Just some food for thought, a mic might work wonders.
Top 5 most surprising finals since 1990 (in reverse chronological order): 1. VEG-WAS, 2. EDM-CAR, 3. CGY-TBL, 4. COL-FLA, 5. LAK-MTL
*Tatar
If the caps lose in game 7 3OT that would be a whole new level of choke for the caps
I think it would be more dramatic if Fleury scores the 3OT winner, perhaps on a breakaway or penalty shot.
leicester winning pl was bigger tbh
Akash Mann all dc sports fans would cry

To me its the Carolina vs Edmonton one. Completely out of nowhere
Why is it the Dallas Stars logo magnet where its supposed to be Minnesota Wild?
Because it was only AFTER the Northstars moved to the Lone star state - in the south that NHL told them they could not keep "North" in their name, hence Dallas Stars - they suck (GO WILD!) ;-)
Flyers vs Blackhawks hand downs most surprising finals to date
25 years and no stanley cups for canada . life is perfect !
2006 was very out of the blue. Don't forget Edmonton was the lowest seed in the west and the chronic choker hurricanes from the southeast division
"...because St. Louis likes to lose in the playoffs." Well that was a little kick in the balls!
🤣 2010 Final, Patrick Kane celebrating by himself and telling the boys he scored in a quiet and confused arena is one of my favorite moments watching hockey
Videos that were a year late, number 78

95 the Devils didn't just BEAT the Wings, they swept them!
Bill Kearns who cares
NOS nobody cares what you and your "9" subscribers think
Hands down, Carolina and Edmonton dumbfounded me

How many magnets do you own lol
1. '06 Final, and both teams' performance in following seasons reinforced it.

What about St Louis first three years ? '67 '68 69
No because there was going to be an expansion team in the final either way
Its since 1981
You're forgetting that we're sort of in a multiple team dynasty already.
Pittsburgh, Chicago, LA. They've pretty much been alternating finals appearances for the past 10 years
The greatest team ov al time the Montreal team that won 5 in a row before ur time Shannon
2012 was the last time it was this surprising
You had to use martinez scoring on lundqvist as the thumbnail -__-
Why is The Dallas logo called Minnesota
Because the Dallas stars is the same franchise as the north stars unlike the wild
A dynasty is 3+ cup winning 50% of the time between the 1st and last cup
thumbnail just had to be that goal, huh... *kill me*
great work with those magnets! It's really way more enjoyable and it's easier to have an overview than having it written out VAN, NSH, DET, LAK, COL etc.
It hurts to not see 1 Leafs logo on the boad.
What team has appeared the most times in the finals without a cup. Off the top of my head St. Louis or Vancouver ?
At some point in the future St. Louis will have a green star. :)
Los Angeles Kings vs New Jersey Devils.
It would be nice to see this SCF goes 7 games, its been a long time since the final went the distance
Love the jersey‼️👍❤️. We must be very close in age. 1981 is the first final I remember caring. I cheered North Stars. My cousin got traded to Oilers in early 80s and never looked back.

Seeing that thumbnail made me feel like a young Paul Atreides being tested by the Reverend Mother:
"THE PAIN!!!"
Is Ovi the Russian interference we keep hearing about?
That team is choke full of Russians!
Larger dynasty than the La kings?
2006

Campbell Kane and to think the Kings almost swept all of it's opponents to.
What a painful thumbnail 😭
NoVa fax
Better that than the skate in the crease IMO
This would actually make a really good series, breaking down one at a time.

😊
Can you do something on Montreal’s 2010 playoff run
Definitely a real shocker, if we polled every NHL fan last off-season this cup final would probably be like guessed by 3% of all fans. Very cool video idea as always
0.05%
I’d say at least 99% of fans had Vegas missing the playoffs, much less make the finals
Coming into the season I had San Jose and Tampa, with Tampa winning it.. And I'm a Caps fan. Of course I suspected history would repeat year again and thought we were going to blow the second round.
Buidalot I had Tampa beating Anaheim. I also had both Vegas and Washington missing the playoffs. Crazy how it turned out

Got some Old Spice deodorant with a Kraken on it so hopefully I can influence Seattle ownership
Ovi deserves the cup more than anyone on both teams
Mn_Hockey34 nobody "deserves" anything.
The team that wins 16 games in the playoffs deserves the cup. Nobody else
Mn_Hockey34 I didn’t know the Stanley Cup was a participation trophy.
StarWine it is brah
This is the most exciting matchup in like 15 to 20 years
Jarryd Tschoerner Kings vs Devils was odd and thrilling at first but then Kings kicked New Jerseys ass pretty good sadly
Hi THG, i was curious what your thoughts were on the Leafs hiring former Canucks AGM Lawerence Gilham? i think his name is. i figured you would have a lot of insight on that
Love the thumbnail!
Not a chance. 😂
I hope y got your Elvis jumpsuit ready, I think that you might just have to wear it Shannon
Make a video on Gulutzan and Yawney to Edmonton?
A dynasty has always been 3 cups in 5 years, not sure why THG always says 3 in 4
Hockey News defines it as 3 in 4 years.
Jonathan Zygmunt The NHL itself defines it as 3 in 5
Tbh I always thought a dynasty was just 4 championships with the same regime. Not really a time frame thing, more so with the same personnel.
Nathan McDougall - Absolutely from 1949 to 1955.
I hate that thumbnail. Only Rangers fans feel the pain..
Musix Us Hawks fans feel it too. The same freaking guy scored in Game 7 OT against us. People forget just how close we were to a threepeat.
Roope Toivanen Rangers are always too good to get a good draft pick, but not good enough to win a cup. This year is different though, as we have 3 firsts. Only problem is that they’re most likely not franchise players.
Roope Toivanen well we could say the same about you guys in 2013 lol
Thx for the thumbnail🤬
Surprise! Both teams will lose and the Coyotes will swoop in and steal the cup
Why THAT thumbnail
Oilers jersey, Love it Shannon 👌🏽👌🏽
Love the finals
You mean Dallas not Minnesota? 😉
Juha Leskinen I’m glad i wasn’t the only one who noticed that lol i thought i was just crazy
Chase Sogge Haha, yeah I needed to rewind and watch it again. 😅
Minnesota North Stars, not Wild
cuz the dallas stars were once the minnesota north stars you fuckin noob
Well no need to be that rude, idiot.
