On NHL 06, the two starting teams are Toronto and Detroit. Maybe thats who where mostly predicted to be in the final. I was waiting for this video. One whole year without hockey and who knew what could've transpired that year!
I know I'm an Ottawa fan but that year with Hossa, Spezza, Alfie in his prime would have scored a ton of goals..., chara, redden, phillips Volchencov on the defence you basically had one guy that could play on the ice at all times. Then you had a bunch of younger forwards in Vermette, Havlat, Bonk, Chris Kelly, Fisher, talk about secondary scoring Toughness. During those few years Chara, Neil and Volchencov where as physical a group of players as there where in the league. I think that the window for winning a cup for Ottawa was right there from 2004 to 2007 and then salary cap and the ream got blown right up. Even then I believe that team was probably their best
I'm not too sure that Scott Stevens would have returned to play for the 2004-2005 season. If you remember correctly, a slapshot to the head ended his season early, the year before. He was still suffering from post concussion syndrome, when he retired in September 2005. And in discussions on NHL Tonight, he has stated that he still has problems to this day. He was a warrior, but I don't think that he would have played the season that never was. Also, think The Wings were way deeper than the few names that you mentioned. Missed names like Yzerman, Shanahan, Robert Lang, Zetterberg, who scored 43pts in 61 games the year before, and 80pts the year that play resumed. Also, reigning Selke winner, Kris Draper, and his "Grind Line" partner, Kirk Maltby. Remember, those guys were usually playing against other teams top lines. Also, on the backend, Lidstrom was partnered with Matthieu Schneider, 2nd pairing would be Chelios/Jiri Fischer. 3rd pairing, Hatcher/Kronwall/Woolley. The weakest link on the team was head coach, Dave Lewis, who had his contract extended that year.

What is PCS? and yeah Stevens’ banner in the New Jersey Rafters says 1991-2005 and i remember that ‘04 season being his last and but him actually retiring in the year of ‘04 so Devils might not have won it in 2005 but you never know cause Devils were strong in 2006 especially our power play but we didn’t have enough toughness to get past Carolina that year so maybe Carolina would have won it

Did you know that from 1995-2009, the SCF team from the West was either Detroit or the team that beat Detroit - in 12 of 14 seasons? Dallas didn't play Detroit in 1999 or 2000. What if they do, maybe Detroit wins 2 more Cups? Colorado and Anaheim were the only other Western teams to win the Cup in that range, and they both beat Detroit to get there. People might not consider them a dynasty since they only repeated once, but I think that's pretty insane. 3 SCF appearance in 4 years, come on! Wow, that’s awesome! It’s such a bummer that the 04-05 season was locked out that year, but I think it would’ve been a great season for me and the devils fans!
I've been saying for a while now that if that season was played out, it would easily be New Jersey vs. Detroit in the Finals. However, I'd go with Detroit winning it all, seeing that they won the Presidents' Trophy both the year before and after the lockout.
President's Trophy is a curse. Whoever was the President's Trophy winner never makes it beyond the first round. I mean very few have gone on to win the Stanley Cup. Detroit was the last one to win the Presidents Trophy and go on to win the Stanley Cup but that was in 2002. It hasn't been done since

So I know I’m like 3 years late to the party though having said that I enjoyed this video. I don’t know if I see the Red Wings going to the final that year. Dave Lewis was the coach and canned before the lockout ended in favor of Mike Babcock. If memory serves me right CuJo was completely pedestrian in Detroit and made Manny Legace look great. The Wings went out in the first round the previous two years under Lewis and CuJo and I can’t see how they would have made it to the finals despite their talent. That was the hallmark of Dave Lewis teams they choked.
I bet nobody predicted Tampa in 04 and Carolina in 06, so who the heck knows?! Maybe that was the year a Canadian team was supposed to win since Calgary and Edmonton didn't! Ottawa lost in 2007, too. Wow. 3 Canadian teams in 3 Finals. Then only one (Vancouver, 2011) since.
As a Penguins I'm glad there was a lockout. Salary cap gave the league more parity, and we "lucked" out winning the draft lottery and getting Sidney Crosby. The fact that the Devils couldn't win their 4th Cup just makes it more sweeter.
You do know that the Devils were not big spenders during the pre-cap era and pretty much dominated the Eastern Conference from 1995-2004. They were usually league average spenders who never shelled out big contracts, Lou was just better than everybody else.
Just as a follow up to my point about the Flyers... I think you're forgetting how much depth and talent (though aging) that roster would've had playing for a Hitchcock coached team in 04-05: Down the middle it was Handzus (58pts)-Roenick (47)-Zhamnov (18 pts-20 games)-Primeau. On the wings were Recchi (75pts), LeClair (55), Amonte (53), a breaking out Gagne (45), Sami Kapanen (30 pts) and Justin Williams (26 pts). Patrick Sharp was also still around. And keep in mind point totals were dropping across the league and this was a Hitch defensive team. On the blueline it was some combo of Kim Johnsson (42 pts), Desjardins, Pitkanen, Therien, Ragnarsson and Seidenberg. With Esche in net, who, as I said below, played part time and won 21 games with a 2.04 GAA and .915 sv% then 11 wins in the playoffs (03-04) with .918. Bob Clarke loved aging vets but that team still had quality depth and a lot of all stars.
Great video! Stevens had to retire mid 2004 due to injuries. That being said, the Devils could have still potentially won a 2005 Stanley cup. The Senators were also good contenders if they could beat the Leafs. A healthy Hasek would have been a good challenge for opposing teams. The Senators took the Devils to a game 7 conference final. Dany Heatley would have added a nice scoring touch too. The Leafs would sign a few free agents that would compliment their talented lines and they had tough guys like Gary Roberts, Tie Domi, Ponikarovsky, Antropov, Fitzgerald, etc. Belfour could have pulled off a good season. Brian Leetch, Bryan McCabe, Tomas Kaberle, Bryan Marchment would have played great. They had a lot of depth with Sundin, Roberts, Mogilny, Nieuwendyk, Francis, Reichel, etc. I would be interesting to see who they would have signed in the off season it could have brought in either more youth or more experienced but not so old players. Nolan was injured so someone would have had to have replaced him. For the Red Wings, Cujo did play injured but he could have healed in the off season and gave another great performance. They could have signed Osgood to back him up as well. Zetterberg and Datsyuk were in their prime. Detroit had a lot of depth as well. They would have signed a few players to compliment their third line and defense. For San Jose, they could have potentially made it to the Western conference final with a goaltender like Nabokov who was in his prime. They could have signed a few free agents and a veteran leader to make their team better. I agree that Dallas and Colorado would have most likely fell apart in the 2nd round.
I'll take that over the Blackhawks winning in the 2013 shortened season, is it too late to play the 2005 season in exchange of a full season lockout in 2013?
I agree with everything you said until the very very end I believe Detroit would have won and that was the whole point of the salary cap you look at all the teams before the salary cap and small-market teams didn't have a chance in hell. Detroit during that time epitomized buying a cup and being a buffalo fan my team never had a chance until after the salary cap that's why Buffalo was so good out of the gate when the lock was opened in the lockout we finally had a shot. Looking at Club salaries through the years is insane. It's amazing that the Sabres are spending Beyond large Market money based on pre lockout numbers.
Clark Wilson - Hasek would've had another injury just like he did the following year with Ottawa and just like he did in 1997 with Buffalo and just like he did in 1999 with Buffalo and just like he did in 2004 with Detroit. He was constantly injured and/or using injury as an excuse to quit on his team.
MB30 GOAT they had a good backup who took them to the cup finals in 2007. Ottawa got shafted by the cap they had assembled some great talent. I think they had six 20 goal scorers or over the following year not including Spezza who tallied 90 points. Their top line was the best in hockey with Alfie, Spezza and in 2004 Hossa later traded for Heathly
Clark Wilson I think finally Ottawa would have pull out of the choking against the leafs since they were way too old in the second round but Ottawa would have a tough eastern conference final against NJ either six or seven games for them and the finals I think Detroit would have figured out something to beat the Devils So 2005 champions his Detroit over New Jersey
It's easy to overlook Robert Esche because of the way his career fizzled but if you look at where he was in 03-04, right before the lockout, he was on track to be a very good starter. 03-04 the Flyers lost in game 7 of the ECFs to Tampa but Esche had a season where he won 21 games with a .915 sv % and a 2.04 GAA (as a part time starter) and he was even better in the playoffs with 11 wins and a .918 sv%. If 04-05 had happened the Flyers still had the top level veterans for one more run. They still would've had Roenick and Primeau and LeClair with Esche just coming into his own. I don't think they would've won the Cup but they would've been in the conversation. And I'm still convinced that they absolutely would've beaten Calgary if they didn't lose that 2-1 game 7 to Tampa.
Unfortunately as a Rangers fan I totally see this happening had it been on paper. I think Ottawa had a pretty good chance too because Hasek would've had a better team in front of him than in Buffalo, but we'll never know. Also is it bad the second you put a question mark against NJ I immediately thought "oh yeah he's picking them?"
I cant really decide between Ottawa or New Jersey. Like I get NJ has an amazing roster with Brodeur, Stevens, and Neidermayer, but Ottawa has some really great guys too like Hossa and Spezza at their peaks and Chara on the blue, plus Hasek probably going god-mode in the playoffs so idk its either NJ or Ottawa
My possible 2005 Stanley Cup Matchups: Flames vs Lightning Senators vs Flames Maple Leafs vs Flames Red Wings vs Flames Lightning vs Sharks Sharks vs Devils Sharks vs Senators Sharks vs Red Wings Maple Leafs vs Sharks Stars vs Maple Leafs
Tampa Bay would be the defending champions. I understand why they would be a factor to defend the Cup. If San Jose made it as far as the Conference Finals in '04 then without Thornton, and there would be a chance that if you say that Boston would not be a contender then there would be a trade possibility of Thornton to San Jose for draft picks, and right then and there the Sharks would at the most make the Cup Final and maybe even win the Cup Final. As a Sharks fan myself I would explode in excitement and cry so much to see San Jose win a Stanley Cup in my lifetime. I say San Jose would've made it to the Cup Final in the West and the Eastern Champion would be Ottawa. Then there would be the 2007 Cup Final when Ottawa would make the Cup Final again but lose to Anaheim as we all know in 5 games. So if there were a 2004-2005 NHL season San Jose would've made that trade deal in 2005-06 that included Joe Thornton for the two players San Jose had in the deal and then the Sharks would make their first Stanley Cup Final in their 15 year (then) history and win it in 7 games at home in San Joses' HP Pavilion over the Ottawa Senators. For the playoffs 8 teams in each conference have to make it. Besides the five in the West and six in the east. In the west Vancouver, Nashville, and St. Louis make the playoffs. In the East, Buffalo and Islanders make the playoffs.
I'm so happy you didn't pick my Leafs to win because I knew the lockout was the end of that era and if they would have won I'd have died happy... so onward I live to see the Leafs win ... 40 long years lol
This was fun, but I have to go with Dominik Hasek taking the Cup with Ottawa. I just think he would have made the difference and had enough defense in front of him.
Interesting thought exercise I see you ended up with 5 West (CGY CO DAL DET SJ) & 6 East (NJ MTL OTT PHI TB TOR). Maybe by accident I’m imagining CO likely bests DAL (my team) in 5 in the first round like they did in 2004 & 2006. CGY can’t duplicate their 2004 run to the Cup & despite being a West favorite, something happens to derail SJ’s Cup chances. This leads to one more DET-CO West Finals. DET wins the physical series in 6. The handshake line is one of mutual respect between the two teams East it gets a little more murky. OTT beats favored TOR in Round 1, followed by upsetting defending champ TB in Round 2. NJ beats PHI in Round 1, followed by beating MTL. NJ-OTT in East Finals. This goes the distance with NJ winning Game 7 1-0. Brodeur and Hasik embrace for a long time in the handshake line. The New Jersey crowd chant Hasik’s name as a sign of respect afterwards and realize they watched something special Cup Final: Not like 1995 when these two last met. 4/7 games are decided in overtime with one ending in 3OTs. Game 7 is won by… New Jersey, another Brodeur shutout
Hey hockey guy, I just noticed you're a southpaw! Just thought I'd mention it... Did you know 87% of left handed men go bald? Just made that up, but I wanted to say more than my observation... Love your channel, keep it up!!!😋
It really sucks for teams like San Jose and Ottawa. What IF that was the year. But it just really sucks that one team lost out on a Cup that year. I still remember Roenick on "The Best Dam Sports Show" saying 26, 36, 46 game season, let's do it. Get it done. Ugh
I hate New Jersey but I love your show. Obviously the Avs should have won but you make a good point. Aebischer was a weak goalie. But Foote and Blake! They are difference makers.
I really like your methodology in your picks, and your reasoning. I'm a bit of a Red Wings fan, city boy even, I think it would have gone to game seven, but I think Detroit would have, by odds, a very good shot of winning. They still had Hull according to everything I can find, although Yzerman was for all intents and purposes gone, they had discovered the danger of Zetterberg (2 kids and a goat). Arguably the best man ever in front of a goalie, in Tomas Holmstrom, along with Schneider and a plethora of other goal scorers and hall of famers. They also had Osgood at the time, so if Cujo let them down they had a multiple cup winner backing up the bench. Even still, I'd say that team's most glaring weakness was goal tending. That cup would probably have been a coach's battle, but either way, I really like the run down on this.
I just did this in NHL 2005 (default rosters) using an emulator and Vancouver beat Atlanta in 6 games. The Canucks would have won their first cup and the Thrashers surely would have been saved.
I agree after they got bounced by the flyers in the quarter finals in 04 besides stevens getting hurt most of that season the whole team felt beyond embarassed after winning it in 03 and i honestly believe without arnott and holik jersey would of still won it cause we had langenburner, brylin, elias and stevens guys thats chipped in at times to win the cups in 00 and in 03.plus marty was starting to get at his peak so ya all in all 2005 would of been the year all of us devils fans myself included would of gotten it.
I would have had Ottawa vs Detroit that year. Ottawa definitely had the best team and chance in an Eastern Conference that wasn't as much a power house as it became in the years that followed. The West was stacked but I feel Detroit was a very, very deep, complete team. They won the Presidents Trophy the following year was just 3 years removed from a Stanley Cup. I would have loved Ottawa to win it in 6 but I feel Detroit would have taken it in 6.
I had that exact pick for the last few years now but I’m starting to second guess Detroit in the west. In a 28 game sprint I think they would’ve fell behind and SJ or Cgy would taken them out.
That Red Wings team was loaded. They didn't have a bonified #2 defenceman, Yzerman was an old man, and Zetterberg and Datsyuk were still young, but I don't think it's fair to say Detroit wasn't physical. Hatcher and McCarty might have something to say about that. They also had the Grind Line. The problem is Joeseph wasn't Brodeur. I agree, Devils win.
You’re basing this largely off of Scott stevens, who was all but retired at that point, returning not only to play again but to peak form. That’s a huge oversight.
Ryan Scherbluk All 30 teams had an equal chance at acquiring the 1st overall pick. If the 2005 season is allowed to exist and happens the way Shannon describes it in this video, it's highly likely that the Penguins tank for Crosby and get him since the odds of a top projected team to get the 1st overall pick was 25% at the time. Keep in mind that the Penguins were bankrupt, and the NHL was willing to do anything to keep a Stanley Cup winning team from moving away from a city they won a championship with. If the Penguins didn't get Crosby, they likely would have moved to Kansas City or contracted while assimilating their roster with the Philadelphia Flyers and Washington Capitals. Imagine that, Marc-Andre Fleury backing up Olaf Kolzig (Olie the Goalie) in Washington. Fun times, the realms of hypotheticals.

if the lockout didnt happen, malkin would have led the pens out of the cellar and not win the lottery for sid.
Exactly. Malkin would have had them good enough to not get sid
Except Malkin wasn't in the NHL for a couple more years.
I agree. The only reason New Jersey had a poor year in 2004 was because Stevens got hurt pretty much all season.

As a kid I actually thought New Jersey won the cup in 2005
Mandela effect, clearly they did in a different timeline.
I remember it like it was yesterday. Marty had 4 shutouts in the final, for a combined 10 saves.
It wasn't those Devil's who won the cup in 2005. It was a different devil, Gary Bettman
They had so many great players
I’m a Devils fan and I approve this message 😉 Let’s Go Devils 💪🏽
If the 2005 season would have happened, malkin would have led the pens out of the lottery and crosby would have ended up elsewhere.
Malkin came over in 2006, he had no possibility to come earlier
I think you're forgetting how much depth and talent (though aging) that roster would've had playing for a Hitchcock coached team in 04-05:
Down the middle it was Handzus (58pts)-Roenick (47)-Zhamnov (18 pts-20 games)-Primeau.
Detroit had a pre-heart condition Jiri Fisher on defense as well
Great video!
LOL I completely forgot about the Roman Cechmanek Kings years. I remember him beating the Leafs in the Playoffs in '03 with Philly though lol
As a Devils Fan this made me sad. RIP 2005 Stanley Cup
I wonder what the "letter grades" were for each team after the 2004 Stanley cup playoffs
Sentimental pick is Ottawa for mine but I can't argue with NJ
I would say Ottawa honestly
Clark Wilson I think finally Ottawa would have pull out of the choking against the leafs since they were way too old in the second round but Ottawa would have a tough eastern conference final against NJ either six or seven games for them and the finals I think Detroit would have figured out something to beat the Devils
So 2005 champions his Detroit over New Jersey
New Jersey or Detroit for sure
6:13 Alphabetically, Saint Louis *is* before San Jose. :)
Sorry, I couldn't resist...
I really think the Sens would've been the 2005 Stanley Cup Champions
It would have been Flyers Vs Wings with Wings winning
Justin Pogge now plays for my team in Sweden and quite well actually
I would've put my money on Ottawa to win the cup. No particular reason why, just a gut feeling that I got when I saw the roster
Bandwagon penguins fans currently looking up who won that year
I felt my brain grow a tumor from that sentence
My possible 2005 Stanley Cup Matchups:
Flames vs Lightning
Senators vs Flames
Maple Leafs vs Flames
Red Wings vs Flames
Lightning vs Sharks
Sharks vs Devils
Sharks vs Senators
Sharks vs Red Wings
Maple Leafs vs Sharks
Stars vs Maple Leafs
Red wings were in the west lol.
Buffalo was amazing the next year...
I'm so happy you didn't pick my Leafs to win because I knew the lockout was the end of that era and if they would have won I'd have died happy... so onward I live to see the Leafs win ... 40 long years lol
ha... as soon as he mentions raycroft he gives the bruins the ex. that made me laugh
This was fun, but I have to go with Dominik Hasek taking the Cup with Ottawa. I just think he would have made the difference and had enough defense in front of him.
The blackhawks logo in your hat looks really concerned/scared hahahahahha
Interesting thought exercise
I see you ended up with 5 West (CGY CO DAL DET SJ) & 6 East (NJ MTL OTT PHI TB TOR). Maybe by accident
I’m imagining CO likely bests DAL (my team) in 5 in the first round like they did in 2004 & 2006. CGY can’t duplicate their 2004 run to the Cup & despite being a West favorite, something happens to derail SJ’s Cup chances. This leads to one more DET-CO West Finals. DET wins the physical series in 6. The handshake line is one of mutual respect between the two teams
East it gets a little more murky. The New Jersey crowd chant Hasik’s name as a sign of respect afterwards and realize they watched something special
Cup Final: Not like 1995 when these two last met. 4/7 games are decided in overtime with one ending in 3OTs. Game 7 is won by… New Jersey, another Brodeur shutout
That would have been amazing SCF in 2005
Hey hockey guy, I just noticed you're a southpaw!
Ugh
detroit would have won it. new jersey or montreal east champ.
I hate New Jersey but I love your show. Obviously the Avs should have won but you make a good point. Aebischer was a weak goalie. But Foote and Blake! They are difference makers.
Whenever I hear Scott Stevens I just get mad
Stevie Y would have another Cup
I was on board until 18:15. Neither NJ nor Det would have beaten Ott that year, imho
Imagine if the Ducks got Crosby.
Bittersweet analysis 😈/😭
Red Wings def Devils
I'm not too hot about the blues, but that is a BADASS profile picture you got there! Epic.
Here before Las Vegas knights
That Red Wings team was loaded. They didn't have a bonified #2 defenceman, Yzerman was an old man, and Zetterberg and Datsyuk were still young, but I don't think it's fair to say Detroit wasn't physical. Hatcher and McCarty might have something to say about that. They also had the Grind Line. The problem is Joeseph wasn't Brodeur. I agree, Devils win.
Why the Boston cross off?
Fun video
Do it for 2020!!
You’re basing this largely off of Scott stevens, who was all but retired at that point, returning not only to play again but to peak form. That’s a huge oversight.
Question Crosby was the number one draft pick in 05 how did they do a draft with no season
Ryan Scherbluk
All 30 teams had an equal chance at acquiring the 1st overall pick.
Dude the red wings should of won
What are your thoughts on Evgeni Nabokov? Personally he was my favorite goalie ever.
Anthony Moyle some of his saves were legendary, made me watch the sharks whenever they played on tsn, definitely a top 5 favorite for me.
i like this video
I'm a ducks fan but I think Detroit
