7/26/2020- Mike Nesmith had a one on one Zoom chat with me while he signed a Guitar Songbook. Truly, an entertaining, funny and reflective once-in-a-lifetime experience!
monkees are a universal act i know listeners of many genres and they all respect the monkees (i too am a zeppelin guy) them not being in the R&R hall of fame is a joke really
His voice. His talent. His boyish charm. His mischievous wink. His sarcastic wit. His uniqueness. And perhaps most of all that cool green hat with the pom pom, something only he could get away with. He made it look so cool, just as he was effortlessly cool in his demeanor. He was always the "different one" and there was just something about him. Truly one of a kind and irreplaceable. A piece of my childhood died with him the day he passed and my heart was broken. I can't believe he's gone and he'll forever be missed.
I find myself wondering how the interviewer is feeling just days after Mike Nesmith has passed on. No doubt he and his wife will go back and watch this video over and over recalling how candid, intelligent and funny Mr. Nesmith was in life. It has to be one of the rarest and special moments in one's life when our idols and/or heroes not only live up to our expectations but, in this case, surpass them. But to be able to go one on one with him/her. . .oh man. What a thrill. Mike never seemed rushed as if something needed to be done or he's bored with a fan. Classy. It also has to be tough remembering how vibrant and seemingly healthy Mike appears just 18 months prior to his death. The Monkees were of my generation and now 3/4 of them are gone. Thanks for sharing this. Michael Nesmith was special. He truly lived a fascinating life.

To me, Michael was just as much a keen comedian as he was a singer-songwriter-musician -- everything he didi! His comedy is always what I look for. Oh he's a singer too?? Hee hee. 🙂

Nice interview. Unfortunately Michael's health went downhill rather quickly not too long after this. I was at one of the Mike & Micky Shows only months before he passed away and was surprised how frail looking he was. But even then he put on a great show and I'm glad I got to see him one last time. Such a talent! Such a great songwriter!
He seems in great shape for a man approaching 79 here....so sad 6 months later he's on tour and even though enjoying himself and sounding great he's looking older and weak and then he's gone..... I'm so thankful I got to finally see and hear him perform with Micky on the farewell tour back in October. I saw Davy Peter and Micky back in 1986 so this fufilled my dream to say I'd seen my music hero.....only wish he could have been around a while longer ...I have a feeling there was more great music for him to make.Loved ya Nez!Monkees 4ever!!
This hurts too much to watch. Mike's persona, and his overall attitude reminds me so much of my older brother. I love his "give a shit" attitude and the way life just seems to flow around him...he can either flow with it or do something else entirely. He seems relatively healthy here, so it's so hard to imagine him passing just a year 1/2 after this interview. On top of the recent tornado through Arkansas and Kentucky, Mike's passing just makes the world that much sadder. I'm truly sorry for us all.
I've met so many people who seemed healthy and happy but died either through natural causes or suicide within one year after I met them: Davy Jones (three weeks after I met him-- couldn't have seemed healthier), Margot Kidder, Grace Lee Whitney, Bubba Smith, etc. It's scary.
Mike was so polite and kind! He was intelligent and witty, too, as seen here! That "Oh God, how long will I be able to do this?" was pretty telling. RIP, Mike. I admit I have a lot of catching up to do with his solo work and Elephant Parts. And I'd love to see the Monkees in the Hall of Fame, whether that's a possibility or not. They could get Christian to represent Mike, Davy's daughters to represent him and Peter's daughters to represent him. Micky would probably say "It feels weird not being here with 3 people who deserve to be here." And it will. This should've happened back in 2010.
The Monkees in the RnRHoF? It really doesn't matter, the RnRHoF is a sham outfit run by gatekeepers by and large from Rolling Stone magazine! For those of us who love The Monkees it's not needed...

I wished I had known this was even possible. I worked around quite a few celebrities in my lifetime and was not starstruck because in my mind I was working! However, if I was talking to a celebrity I admired since I was a kid, I don't think I could help but to be a bit starstruck at first LOL.. you did a great job of interviewing Mr Nesmith and I think I would have done hopefully as well as you did if I had the chance thank you for this video!

Yeah, it made the moment so much more impactful (unfortunately) My wife and I traveled to Knoxville TN and saw Mike and Micky perform on October 7th. I can't explain, or even believe the decline from July 2020 until October 2021- you can see he was so witty, so quick, so engaging. He was one of a kind.
The thing I like about this guy is, he’s a Texan. I find people from Texas to be very down to earth and hospitable. I’m glad I got to live there many years ago. It was the most happiest time of my life. They are the most real, honest, most accepting people you’ll ever want to me. There’s only one thing. They don’t care for phony, disingenuous type people. You gotta bring honesty to the table if you want friendship with a Texan. But if you’re lucky enough to be friends with a Texan, you’ll find, they’re probably gonna be one of the best friends you will ever have.
The guy wrote "Different Drum", made famous by Linda Ronstadt. Apparently you can write a great song on a napkin. And he was a pretty damned good guitar player. Mike was an extremely talented guy with with a big heart. Rest in peace, buddy.

In a futile effort to restore my integrity as a fluent English speaker and patron of all of the arts, I've made a correction. I've become increasingly less concerned with being meticulous with my typing, spelling, etc. on UA-cam (and elsewhere) after a stroke about a year ago. But thanks for the correction (seriously). He was very self-effacing on that subject, but Hank Williams and Johnny Cash were of a lesser skill level as guitarists and couldn't read or write music either, and they were two of America's greatest songwriters.
I bought a Guitar Songbook on VideoRanch (his company) And for about the price of a concert ticket, you could have a 10 minute Zoom call while he signed it. As you can see, he was more than generous with his time. Truly, memories for as long as I can remember them! :-)

The modest way in which this opportunity was presented tells me they understood and respected fans, the unpretentious men left ego at the door. You've given us all a gift. It was a thoroughly wonderful chat you had with Nez, so comfortable and natural, to your credit. Your easy-going wit and candor were a match to his own. What a pleasure. It's not my nature to frequent concerts but I attended their Santa Barbara CA concert the same year you did, 2013; it was a celebration of so many things.

I actually knew his Mom. She still lived in a modest home in North Dallas. Long since passed but I did not know that Michael was a smoker! Horrible habit and will shorten your life.
@@kennethsouthard6042 I admit that was a bit of a guess. I don't have any specific scientific knowledge about the subject but I just presumed that weed wouldn't be the chronic artery blocker that tobacco is.
@@blackmore4 Contrary to what the weed industry tells you, if you burn an organic substance and inhale the smoke into your lungs, you will eventually suffer the same bad outcomes that tobacco smokers do. Just look at the resins inside a pot pipe. Where do you think that goo ultimately ends up? The only reason that most weed smokers tend to fare better than tobacco users is that they don't smoke it as much and tend to quit while younger. However, there are some life long weed smokers that buck that trend.
@@kennethsouthard6042 tobacco, at least the kind most smoke, is far worse with all the added chemicals and added nicotine. If I were going to smoke, I'd go with cannabis.
Mike was very friendly but he is making little sense. Talking a lot of jibberish. I saw Micky, Davy and Peter a few times as “The Monkees” and they were straightforward entertainers. Mike was a great success and a good man, RIP. This interview is meandering and nonsensical.
Well, he was stoned...and I am not trying to be Mike Wallace of 60 Minutes. Its too bad you are not able to enjoy the frivolity and gentle nature of discussing a 50 year career in 25 minutes. It was a thrill of a lifetime for me and what you call nonsensical gibberish, I called " the goofy wall to wall humor and wit of an uber celebrity" having fun with a fan.
Whenever you hear a Nesmith interview you get something different each time. In a Davy/Peter/Micky interviews you hear the same soundbites again and again "IT WAS A TELEVISION SHOW ABOUT A GROUP" etc etcetera .... "JOHN LENNON SAID THE MONKEES ARE MORE LIKE THE MARX BROS etc.... BTW the song 'Conversations' original title was in full 'Carlisle Wheeling Effervescent Popsicle'.

I have listened to metal, punk, alternative since I was 14, but I have always loved the Monkees and Nez since I was a kid.
Same here...along with RUSH, The Cure, REM and the Foos- but Mike is still amongst the top.

@@kennethsouthard6042 I admit that was a bit of a guess. I don't have any specific scientific knowledge about the subject but I just presumed that weed wouldn't be the chronic artery blocker that tobacco is.
@@blackmore4 Contrary to what the weed industry tells you, if you burn an organic substance and inhale the smoke into your lungs, you will eventually suffer the same bad outcomes that tobacco smokers do. Just look at the resins inside a pot pipe. Where do you think that goo ultimately ends up?
The only reason that most weed smokers tend to fare better than tobacco users is that they don't smoke it as much and tend to quit while younger.
However, there are some life long weed smokers that buck that trend.
@@kennethsouthard6042 tobacco, at least the kind most smoke, is far worse with all the added chemicals and added nicotine. If I were going to smoke, I'd go with cannabis.

Mike was very friendly but he is making little sense. Talking a lot of jibberish. I saw Micky, Davy and Peter a few times as “The Monkees” and they were straightforward entertainers. Mike was a great success and a good man, RIP. This interview is meandering and nonsensical.
Well, he was stoned...and I am not trying to be Mike Wallace of 60 Minutes. Its too bad you are not able to enjoy the frivolity and gentle nature of discussing a 50 year career in 25 minutes. It was a thrill of a lifetime for me and what you call nonsensical gibberish, I called " the goofy wall to wall humor and wit of an uber celebrity" having fun with a fan.

Whenever you hear a Nesmith interview you get something different each time. In a Davy/Peter/Micky interviews you hear the same soundbites again and again "IT WAS A TELEVISION SHOW ABOUT A GROUP" etc etcetera .... "JOHN LENNON SAID THE MONKEES ARE MORE LIKE THE MARX BROS etc.... BTW the song 'Conversations' original title was in full 'Carlisle Wheeling Effervescent Popsicle'.
