Expedition-Ready Mercedes G500 - (Off-Road) One Take

- Meet Sergei and Ilya, father and son off-road enthusiasts. Sergei is an engineer by trade and for fun, they participate in the Nevada Trophy events; large-scale Geocaching searches across vast expanses of northern Nevada. So they needed the appropriate vehicle with which to roam the high desert in total comfort and luxury: a Mercedes G500. Purchased used, this 2003 G500 has been upgraded to full Expedition status by Sergei himself, and features sleeping quarters for 2, a refrigerator, exterior and interior lighting, an air compressor, gun rack, storage compartments, a secondary electrical system, HAM and CB Radios, and that's just on the inside! The stealth-looking G-Wagen also sports double-Fox shocks with upgraded ORC springs, skid plates, and 35" BFG Mud-Terrain tires.

+billy thorton Cars are made to be driven, and they were originally designed for military use, and, in most cases, were not used on roads unless available, so. It became a fashion statement, and they're still monster boxes, definitely overpriced boxes, but a good used one is a god tier car in the right hands.

I love the g wagon , because once when i was a chld i go off roading with my uncle and we get stuck in the snow for 3 hours , later a snowplow try to get out but break the sling support and can't do nothing but suddenly a G wagon appears from the snow and free us from the snow with a winch .

People: I'm listening to this video on an iPhone internal speaker and can hear everything perfectly clearly. If you're saying you can't hear, it's because your hardware sucks. This isn't the greatest audio recording in history, but if I can hear it clearly on a cell phone's shitty speaker, the problem isn't the levels in the video.

After Matt tested the G-wagon AMG I was disappointed that it was terrible on the road, mainly because I really like them. I'm glad to see someone actually using one for what it was made it do. This is such an awesome build...

Major respect for Sergei and Ilya! I have been on these trails at Hungry Valley many times on my motocross bike. Those hills are seriously steep and rutted in some parts and I would have been the guy on the motocross bike with my jaw on the ground giving him the big thumbs up!! Awesome to see someone with balls big enough to tackle this terrain in a G500 and use it the way it was designed... to go off road and not just for cruising to the mall !! great job guys!

I love engineers. Such a delightfully insane lot. Whether it's writing five hundred lines of code from scratch in notepad so the only thing you have to do next time is press a button, or overthinking the solution to a simple problem to such a degree that it also solves five other problems you didn't even know you had, their odd sort of proactive laziness never ceases to amuse and impress me.
Damn insane - you have to admire his passion for the vehicle.
Amazing! Extensive off-roading in the service with an armored G290 CDI and even when weighed down by the armor the G is a beast! Much love for the car and the episode, good job on showing what the G is for.

+Furkan Turfanda I would do some research, if I recall correctly the early 2000 X-Terra's have an issue where the radiator leaks onto the transmission or something and destroys the transmission and the radiator.
+TheCobruhAlienat0r the 2005+ automatic xterra, Titan,fx35 and pathfinder were all prone to that. Luckily it's a free mod to route the coolant away from the tranny

Yeah, but unless the owner at the time took their vehicle in for the recall when it was open then I don't think you could pull up to a Nissan dealer right now and ask them to fix what was in the recall.

This is what G wagon is made for.
All the right mods without screwing it up - mild lift, good shocks, off-road tires, skid plates. I'd add a winch, but that's it. Super capable with old-school Mercedes quality.
I've never had a problem with any audio quality on this channel that I wasn't warned about. Also, even when I was warned about it, I still enjoyed the video. It's UA-cam people, it's free entertainment. Stop being panzies complaining about wind noise, appreciate the fact he produces these videos consistently.

Was looking forward to this after listening to the podcast, not disappointed. One of the coolest one takes to date. I actually occurred to me that Matt doesn't always have to drive, if it's a really unique car we probably get to see it in a better light if the owner drives it.

Judging for any G even G63 by the sports car criteria is the same like judging Corvette Z01 by its off-road abilities.
i like the comment he made on people buying cars they cant afford to enjoy. i see tons of beautiful new rubicons modified to the extreme and never go offroad. i could drive down the street right now and point out 10 in 10 minutes.

Matt: Thanks for giving the G-Class some love! :) As much as I want one of the ROW spec G-Wagons with more utilitarian features , the abundance of fully optioned (or over optioned) G-Wagons in the USA, makes buying a used, fully optioned, version a tempting purchase. Musician and audio guy here. Minus the total knockout from wind at beginning, it sounds fine on my big speakers at home. And for the record, getting good sound is exponentially more expensive than good video. Any iPhone can do flawless video for most consumers with good vibration reduction. But good audio, multiple mics, and level control normally requires a sound guy and equipment that would require trading in car to fund (a la Bluesmobile in The Blues Brothers).
Also, +TheSmokingTire if you are going to be sponsored by Harry's Razors, you really should shave in the back of the G-wagon while going offroad (safer than getting a tattoo like Henry Rollins once did in a Hummer).

This was my favorite One Take in a while, nice location choice to demonstrate the abilities of the G500. The audio is FINE people, the only negative in that department is the wind noise on the mic in the exterior portion. Definitely fine, but wind muff would improve it even more. Keep up the good work Matt, love waking up to these every few days!
