Thanks for the video. I had a PT cruiser with a misfire as well. Your troubleshooting steps help me quite a bit. I ended up finding a vacuum leak on the intake manifold with a smoke machine. I wouldn't have thought to use a smoke machine without your video.
Very thorough. I appreciate it, I've been a bicyclist my whole life, but for the past 5 years I've had this PT Cruiser. I could fix anything on that bike. Hi, nice filming and great consistent audio. Watched pt1 and pt2 and easy to see and hear. I bought a 2001 PT cruiser that was garaged for 3 years, it's 2018 now. It was a show car and meticulously kept up with all service records. I got interested and looked on FB and offerup and see quite a few cruisers for really cheap, like a few hundred. Most have great bodies, maybe worn inside, but decent. Most have engine issues. Just looked at a 2001 similar to mine that had the same aymptoms. Garage told them to much to fix and it will start and run, but misfires, although at higher rpm it seems smoother. I was going to get is for $275 as a parts vehicle if nothing else, but like one reader commented it crazy that cars in basically good condition are junked because no one can afford to do repairs. I thought of making a stab at it with all the info for diagnosing the problem, just not sure what the parts would cost if it is a head. Guess I'll find out. Thanks again for the video and wondering if there is a part 3? Did you change head and continue?

I always heard that the PT is a bear to do just the simple stuff and after watching you remove things just to get to the spark plugs, I'm convinced I don't want one of these cars. Good Video Back in the days when I worked in a garage, we would have had to remove the head after the compression test ,to pin point the actual problem it was a small garage, doing the leak down tests is a great way to pin point the fault,

Several years ago, I ran into problem with misfiring. While doing compression check on #3 and #4, there was a lot of antifreeze shooting out of #1 and #2 cylinders. Took the head off and found a crack between #1 and #2. Remanufactured head cost me almost $400 at the time. After replacing it, had no further problem except massive oil spray caused by ruptured diaphragm in the oil sensor. Engine had been sitting with the head off while trying to get the funds to pay for the head and had been quite awhile before getting repaired. I made sure I removed the oil/antifreeze mixture and antifreeze so it may not cause damage to the inside of the engine before letting it sit. But oil sensor probably didn't take it too kindly. One day, I took off fast and then stop. When I stopped, suddenly the smoke blasted past me as if there was a bomb gone off behind me. Turned out oil sensor blew through the connector and flooded the exhaust pipes with oil.
This is great info but might be bad news for me. I started to get a #2 misfire code. happened all at once. yesterday at about 11:30am leaving work. i have checked everything and changed everything, you have showed me some additional thing to check... Thanks

my hilux misfire the same way and I checked for sparks and coils and wires everything is good I thinking of a compression test that will pinpoint the problem thanks for your informative video I am waiting for part 2.
its always a good step in troubleshooting a misfire, another great tool for the arsenal is a lab scope, unfortunately my old bench top scope took a crap a few month back, once i get back on my feet it will be replaced for sure, what i could have done with the scope is what they call a relative compression test, number 3 low compression would have showed up nicely, without removing a single part, just disabling spark and fuel, just hooking up a amp clamp and cranking the engine over, each cylinder compression stroke will show a spike in amps as the starter strains to over come the comp. therefore the low compression 3 would have shown a less amp spike
robinsonsauto hey robinson, it is 2004 toyota pickup 4 cylinders its misfiring and have some vibration when start move and when ascending a hill . i changed spark-plugs 3 times and test every thing and find nothing bad . after this video i tested the compression and found the cause of the misfire . 3 cylinders around 165 psi and # 4-95 psi . i pour an oil in cylinder #4 then i have 150 psi . are there any way to fix it with out change the piston rings ?

How do you guys charge for this inspecting time for the cause but not the actual fix such as replacing gaskets, burnt valves.... You let them know that what would be the estimate cost or bill them in the end after fixing the car ? Sometimes i have some trouble with this diagonostic charge Waiting for the part 2

Good to see you back posting videos. I am certainly interested in what you find when the head comes off. Hopefully it is just a gasket. You think it was time that might of killed the head gasket or head or maybe an overheat?

Great video and nifty diagnostic work. I was trying to pinpoint the cause and end up confused. I want to predict the head gasket is leaking due to a blown gasket or warped head. A cracked head, perhaps. I would not think a cracked block would also cause the exhaust seepage. A tech posted to another video that 99.9% of the time it is a pitted valve seat when there is a compression and misfire issue on these PT motors, but this would not explain the coolant leak. Part 2 should be interesting. Thanks.
Thank you for the compliment, i hear ya, thought i had it figured out a few times then got thrown for a loop lol, always an adventure it seems, your correct they did have valve seat issues and i was leaning hard to that being the cause to be honest, then once i noticed the coolant system building pressure i had to step back lol my hope at that point is the previous owner didn't cook this engine, thanks again for the feedback
Enjoyed watching your 3 part video on the PT cruiser, just broke the timing belt on my 2008 today and found it has a non interference engine and may have bent the valves, does it always cause valve damage in these engines when the belt breaks?
It is an interference motor not a non-interference motor a non-interference motor would be very old or belong to a lawn mower most engines nowadays are of the interference type meaning that when the belt snaps the cam free spins away from the motor and if a piston comes up when a valve is open boom but this doesn't always happen and if you didn't hear a shit ton of loud noise or anything like that you may be all right just check your compression
Need help. I have a 2001 pt cruiser 5 speed. One day it started acting funny, by funny I mean it kind of felt like I wasn't getting enough gas. It felt like it wanted to stall on me. When finally it did. I replaced the fuel pump and filter, and it didn't fix the problem. So I changed the coil pack. It started up, my dad took it for a ride, and it completely died on him. Ended up having to get it towed him. So I bought new spark plugs, it started right up but could tell it was still misfiring. The whole time all this is going on, there is no check engine light and no codes. We changed the cam shaft sensor and the check engine light came on, saying cylinder 1 misfire. I have since replaced the crank shaft sensor as well and it still doesn't want to run. It is starting up, but once you start to drive it, it starts stalling out. Please any ideas would be great. Sick of buying parts that aren't the issue.
Very informative video in real time, has me wondering if I have a valve issue at cylinder one myself as I changed the coil pack, spark plugs, and wires...injector seems to be firing fine but trips a code P3001 misfire cyl 1...thanks.
Awesome video great job! I just bought a PT Cruiser and the previous owner said that when they installed a new transmission in the process they broke a sensor and now is causing the engine to overflow with gas n the car is not running due to that. Any ideas? Thanks for ur time!

I bought a car with a cooked engine cheap - ran just missed found out overheat cracked block- no white smoke coming out of muffler so thought probably ok
Mine is making a racket and just started doing it today RIGHT after a CAR wash... Damnit! LOL. Its been making some kind of weird noise for a while but I did not think it was the internals. Thought is was an exhast issue. TUrns out it may be infact the head. Its making a racket it seems and the idle is REAL jumpy. Not sure whats going on. But at this point? Mechainel failure is on the menu. I got close to 300,000 miles on the car so no biggy.

Will, find a cliff with rocks at the bottom and jump those 2.4 suk azz to do heads on. Remove the inner timing cover and then the cams to get the head bolts out what a pain, not horrible... But u r doing it in a pt cruiser. Bad enough they suck to time as well. Ive had more run ins with these than i care to remember. Hey Robinson question maybe you can help me out on this . my engine vibrates, enough to feel it in the steering wheel, between 1000 - 1400 RPM or so. This happens whether accelerating in Drive, or reving the engine gently in Park or Neutral. In other words, it's always present. Another question is when driving gently when the transmission shift to 4 gears the rmp will drop lower and RMP it will start to surge too then it will go up to where it need to be to shift next gear. If I press on the gas a little hard it will be normal . Could this be a faulty map sensor ? 2005 Dodge Durango 3.7 with 124,000 miles . thank
Does this vehicle have any redeeming quality? Compared to Corrolla or Civic, this looks like such a pain to work on and on top of it you have major engine problem on a relatively new car. I can't think of any good engineering reason as to why the engine was designed the way it is on this car. What are the pros of such a design?
Thats a great question, i must say its pretty roomy as far as sitting space compared to a more compact car, and just the fact that the manufacturer stepped outside of the box with body style and concept seems to be appealing to some thats a big risk, however as you mentioned the engine compartment is cramped, changing up the engine layout had to be a task as well for them, i must admit its not as bad as it appears sure compared to most 4 cyl, it seems tough however i would much rather tune this up then say a carivan v6 rear bank, however as you mentioned its a poor setup in many aspects i agree, peppy engine as well for a 2.4
thanks! The vehicle itself is roomy but is the engine compact compared to other similar sized ones? for example, does 2.2 Honda occupy more room in the engine compartment than this one? One of the advantage of a modern 4-cyl 16valve engine is the easy maintenance of the spark plugs as long as one has deep socket or the valve cover gasket. By putting the intake manifold right over the plugs, this engine makes a simple job in to a nightmare. Even some of the V6 (3.5 Honda J series) allows easy spark plug changes on it without having to take off the upper intake.
12vgs8606 your welcome, yea i hear you, i was just thinking outside the engine bay for redeeming quality's, because as you pointed out some simple tasks have been made difficult, due to the compact engine compartment, therefore in that sense your correct, the engine bay rates real low with most other comparisons
my gf has a 2004 pt cruiser 2.4l turbo and the check engine is on and a cpmuter was used to diagnose the problem and it was code P0304 and the spark plugs and wires were changed. the check engine light will blink on and off when in idle and then will stop after accelerating. need help..
hi, do we need to remove intake or just look for air by removing oil cap.. 2) i am not sure why air is coming out in number 1.. does 1 and 3 have some path, or 1,2,3,4 all have path and just because 2 and 4 is closed air is leaking to 1 by least resistance.. do u also recommend me to remove valve cover and intake to be sure..
on this engine the upper intake plenum needs to be removed to gain access to the spark plugs for testing, most other engines do not require this step, 2, all the cylinders share the same path to the exhaust, through a coming exhaust manifold, cylinder 1 just happened to be on the exhaust stroke during this test meaning its exhaust valves were open opening the path to the coming exhaust manifold creating a path of least resistance as you mentioned, i take that step to assure the cylinder being tested is on its compression stoke meaning all the valves are closed, gives you a visual

I have an 09 pt cruiser 2.4 when I do leakdown Air comes out the exhaust and when I do a compression test the third cylinder has no compression even when I added oil u think it’s still just valves?

But it's over now and I have moved on yes o had the habit Bad it got in me but now I'm clean and although I don't attend any meeting I can say The Pt Cruiser/Pronto Disease that almost ended me The Timing belt The Water pump.Radiator. and Headhasket along with The whole "Correct sensors" Ordeal even the ECM repair All that angst after the want all of it Gone I belonged lust after a PT Cruiser god bless you and thanks speedy Pt Cruiser clean for over 6 month.YES.!!
These have a double layer steel plated gasket, chances of it blowing is very slim..You will warp the cyl head before the gasket blows. Im almost willing to bet the car was overheated from maybe a fan failure without you knowing...Im a Chrysler ASE Master tech.

We test the coil pod and it tested fine but I suspected it anyway and replaced it anyway, it was the problem

Good to see you back posting videos. I am certainly interested in what you find when the head comes off. Hopefully it is just a gasket. You think it was time that might of killed the head gasket or head or maybe an overheat?

Great video and nifty diagnostic work. I was trying to pinpoint the cause and end up confused. I want to predict the head gasket is leaking due to a blown gasket or warped head. A cracked head, perhaps. I would not think a cracked block would also cause the exhaust seepage. A tech posted to another video that 99.9% of the time it is a pitted valve seat when there is a compression and misfire issue on these PT motors, but this would not explain the coolant leak. Part 2 should be interesting. Thanks.
Thank you for the compliment, i hear ya, thought i had it figured out a few times then got thrown for a loop lol, always an adventure it seems, your correct they did have valve seat issues and i was leaning hard to that being the cause to be honest, then once i noticed the coolant system building pressure i had to step back lol my hope at that point is the previous owner didn't cook this engine, thanks again for the feedback

Enjoyed watching your 3 part video on the PT cruiser, just broke the timing belt on my 2008 today and found it has a non interference engine and may have bent the valves, does it always cause valve damage in these engines when the belt breaks?
Most times yes. unfortunately
It is an interference motor not a non-interference motor a non-interference motor would be very old or belong to a lawn mower most engines nowadays are of the interference type meaning that when the belt snaps the cam free spins away from the motor and if a piston comes up when a valve is open boom but this doesn't always happen and if you didn't hear a shit ton of loud noise or anything like that you may be all right just check your compression

Need help. I have a 2001 pt cruiser 5 speed. One day it started acting funny, by funny I mean it kind of felt like I wasn't getting enough gas. It felt like it wanted to stall on me. When finally it did. I replaced the fuel pump and filter, and it didn't fix the problem. So I changed the coil pack. It started up, my dad took it for a ride, and it completely died on him. Ended up having to get it towed him. So I bought new spark plugs, it started right up but could tell it was still misfiring. The whole time all this is going on, there is no check engine light and no codes. We changed the cam shaft sensor and the check engine light came on, saying cylinder 1 misfire. I have since replaced the crank shaft sensor as well and it still doesn't want to run. It is starting up, but once you start to drive it, it starts stalling out. Please any ideas would be great. Sick of buying parts that aren't the issue.

My automatic 04 pt is doing the same thing as yours. Did you find the issue. Im thinking clogged injectors. I changed everything else smh
You can hear lack of compression from right at start up at 01:15. No audible strain on starter at TDC of a couple cylinders.
Very informative video in real time, has me wondering if I have a valve issue at cylinder one myself as I changed the coil pack, spark plugs, and wires...injector seems to be firing fine but trips a code P3001 misfire cyl 1...thanks.
How about a 2004 2.4 toubo-charged motor with the same over-heat problem.

I just bought a PT Cruiser and the previous owner said that when they installed a new transmission in the process they broke a sensor and now is causing the engine to overflow with gas n the car is not running due to that. Any ideas? Thanks for ur time!

Will I don't feel good that this car is probably worse than you thought but it does make me feel good that even the best professional can make minor initial misreads. I bought a car with a cooked engine cheap - ran just missed found out overheat cracked block- no white smoke coming out of muffler so thought probably ok
Mine barely even starts but when it does, it'll do this. Distributor, spark plugs and spark plug leads have all been changed and it still does this
I had a misfire on Cyl #4, turns out that the intake gasket on the block side of the intake had developed a crack & it was sucking air.

Mine is making a racket and just started doing it today RIGHT after a CAR wash... Damnit! LOL.
Its been making some kind of weird noise for a while but I did not think it was the internals. Thought is was an exhast issue. TUrns out it may be infact the head. Its making a racket it seems and the idle is REAL jumpy. Not sure whats going on. But at this point? Mechainel failure is on the menu. I got close to 300,000 miles on the car so no biggy.

What was that exhaust smoke coming from the center of the engine when you did the compression test (9:47 and later)?

Pretty obvious to me that No. 2 not 3 had some issues.
Will, find a cliff with rocks at the bottom and jump those 2.4 suk azz to do heads on. Remove the inner timing cover and then the cams to get the head bolts out what a pain, not horrible... But u r doing it in a pt cruiser. Bad enough they suck to time as well. Ive had more run ins with these than i care to remember. Good luck my friend its about as bad as doing a water pump on a 2.7 in a stratus

Hey Robinson question maybe you can help me out on this . my engine vibrates, enough to feel it in the steering wheel, between 1000 - 1400 RPM or so. This happens whether accelerating in Drive, or reving the engine gently in Park or Neutral. In other words, it's always present.
Another question is when driving gently when the transmission shift to 4 gears the rmp will drop lower and RMP it will start to surge too then it will go up to where it need to be to shift next gear. If I press on the gas a little hard it will be normal . Could this be a faulty map sensor ?

Does this vehicle have any redeeming quality? Compared to Corrolla or Civic, this looks like such a pain to work on and on top of it you have major engine problem on a relatively new car. I can't think of any good engineering reason as to why the engine was designed the way it is on this car. What are the pros of such a design?
Thats a great question, i must say its pretty roomy as far as sitting space compared to a more compact car, and just the fact that the manufacturer stepped outside of the box with body style and concept seems to be appealing to some thats a big risk, however as you mentioned the engine compartment is cramped, changing up the engine layout had to be a task as well for them, i must admit its not as bad as it appears sure compared to most 4 cyl, it seems tough however i would much rather tune this up then say a carivan v6 rear bank, however as you mentioned its a poor setup in many aspects i agree, peppy engine as well for a 2.4
thanks! The vehicle itself is roomy but is the engine compact compared to other similar sized ones? for example, does 2.2 Honda occupy more room in the engine compartment than this one? One of the advantage of a modern 4-cyl 16valve engine is the easy maintenance of the spark plugs as long as one has deep socket or the valve cover gasket. By putting the intake manifold right over the plugs, this engine makes a simple job in to a nightmare. Even some of the V6 (3.5 Honda J series) allows easy spark plug changes on it without having to take off the upper intake.
12vgs8606 your welcome, yea i hear you, i was just thinking outside the engine bay for redeeming quality's, because as you pointed out some simple tasks have been made difficult, due to the compact engine compartment, therefore in that sense your correct, the engine bay rates real low with most other comparisons
my gf has a 2004 pt cruiser 2.4l turbo and the check engine is on and a cpmuter was used to diagnose the problem and it was code P0304 and the spark plugs and wires were changed. the check engine light will blink on and off when in idle and then will stop after accelerating. need help..
hi, do we need to remove intake or just look for air by removing oil cap.. 2) i am not sure why air is coming out in number 1.. does 1 and 3 have some path, or 1,2,3,4 all have path and just because 2 and 4 is closed air is leaking to 1 by least resistance.. do u also recommend me to remove valve cover and intake to be sure..
on this engine the upper intake plenum needs to be removed to gain access to the spark plugs for testing, most other engines do not require this step, 2, all the cylinders share the same path to the exhaust, through a coming exhaust manifold, cylinder 1 just happened to be on the exhaust stroke during this test meaning its exhaust valves were open opening the path to the coming exhaust manifold creating a path of least resistance as you mentioned, i take that step to assure the cylinder being tested is on its compression stoke meaning all the valves are closed, gives you a visual

I have an 09 pt cruiser 2.4 when I do leakdown Air comes out the exhaust and when I do a compression test the third cylinder has no compression even when I added oil u think it’s still just valves?

My 08 pt cruiser sounds like it back fires through the breather when you give it gas going down the road. Sounds like it pops and crackles. Any ideas

Mine just blew a head gasket at 70,000 miles. Never overheated

Chrysler Pt cruiser 2004 pcm reprogram
These have a double layer steel plated gasket, chances of it blowing is very slim..You will warp the cyl head before the gasket blows. Im almost willing to bet the car was overheated from maybe a fan failure without you knowing...Im a Chrysler ASE Master tech.
I haven't watched the series yet, but I'm guessing it's a cracked head

Nvm cyl 3 was 25lbs all other cylinders 180 and air comes out of exhaust on cyl 3 at tdc
I freaking hate PT Cruisers. I put on a new head gasket and all the little seals. New coil and sensors. All 4 plugs are firing. Misses like a SOB.
