I did this today. I just unhooked the hose from the air box to the throttle body and left the air box on place. It barely took me 45 minutes. Thank you so much!!
I just got "gifted" a PT Cruiser. I needed this video since I always do a tune up (really quickly) after I purchase it. I, also, change the oil since I never know how many miles are on the current oil. Thank you so much!1🙂👍
THANK YOU!!! You saved me over $150 in parts and labor with this video. Great camera work. FYI, I lost my 8mm ratchet, and was able to use a 5/16" hand ratchet to remove the upper manifold.
Once you get the upper intake out of the way and pull the plug wire a socket will not go on the plug. There is a metal tube in the way. How do you remove it?
My older brother wants to change the change the sparkplugs on my niece's PT Cruiser and your video was the 1st that came up. My compliments on a clear explanation on what needs to be done with some additional tips like checking the plenum gaskets and using a bungee cord to hold the upper intake piece so that the throttle cables can remain connected. Thanks for the expertise.
Here is something that I do and it may help you too! Get yourself a piece of vacuum hose or fuel hose and push it onto the head of the spark plug. You can use it to screw the plug in and both lower it and lift it out of the hole. That way, you don't have to mess with trying to unstick your spark plug socket. Nice video!
just finished the job...wanted to make sure I didn't do anything wrong. I wish I had seen this site first though. Thanks for posting PT Cruiser repairs!
Doing the wife's car tomorrow. Was a misfire and had to go to a shop to convince her I was capable of doing the job and I was doing the right kind of work lol. Thanks for making my job easier and take away any guessing
Never really changed spark plugs before so we'll see how this goes tomorrow! Beats having a shop do it for 3x the amount itd be to do myself! :) Thanks man!
Thanks for the vid. I changed my spark plugs and wires today and did a compression test as well. Very straight forward to remove the intake manifold to get at the spark plugs. When you take the intake manifold off, you have tons of room to change the spark plugs. If you do a compression test and crank the engine without all the sensors plugged in, the next time you start it up, you'll get a "Check engine" light and pending P0508 and P0108 codes, but they'll clear themselves up after a little while.
Remove the air cleaner assembly, remove the 5 8mm bolts across the front and use a rope to suspend the manifold, that`s it. This video makes it so much harder with so many opportunities to mess up.
I somewhat agree with what you say but at 9:50 in the video what about the bolt holding the throttle body? You say remove only the 5 8mm bolts across the front. I don't see the manifold raising by only removing the 5 bolts. Maybe I'm missing something but I do like your idea. Thank you
That's what I did....much easier and not all that bad...just the 5 front 8 mills. Propped it up with an oil container. Cars runs smoooooooooth now, thanx.
Your hands on delivery & explanation thru the steps is really appreciated. Thumbs way up & I'm subscribed. Keep up the good work. Thank you for sharing. Tackling with less apprehension. I'll be rewinding several times I'm sure. Great job!
I realize this post was from 2007 but I’m dealing with a 2007 PT cruiser and I’m getting ready to change the plugs tea PMS sensor because I’ve got a P123 and I appreciate you posting this video
I did this spark plug change 4 to 5 times a week when I worked for Chrysler. I eventually got my time down to 10 minutes start to finish. I didn't disconnect everything mentioned in the video because I was working against the clock. Take your time if your doing this at home.
The Rubber insert in the spark plug socket is more to help you install the plugs; holds them in place while you gently, gently install. To install spark plugs I usually turn BY HAND counter clockwise just to make sure the threads are lined and then start turning BY HAND clockwise. Good work R and W.
This is the hardest way to do it. If you want to charge a lot for hourly labor this is the way. Otherwise disconnect air intake, back 13mm bolt, 5 front 8 mm on the lift, bungee, change plugs torque 13 foot lbs
Don't need to do all that, just remove 5 bolts from upper manifold, tilt manifold back (hold it up by a bungy chord connected to it and your hood's latch), remove air cleaner, and now you can see your 4 spark plugs.
Its a PT Cruiser. Pretty simple over all, but due to the compact engine bay and unique shape of its body, a lot of things (like getting to the spark plugs) aren't right there in front of you. Depending on the slack on wiring, you could probably get away with not unplugging everything the guy did, but its usually worth the extra 2 minutes to give yourself the most open area for the plug install. When I do mine I'll do the same thing, and probably take some before pics so I don't forget anything. Will definitely be covering the open intake with a cloth or something to avoid dropping anything in there, too.
Yea I have to tackle that soon because the water pump is howling. So will do it all at the same time along with CV axle. The boot is busted but no clunking or other noises yet. I don't know if it helps or buys it more time but I push a little grease up into the slit of the broken boot to help replace lost grease and maybe push out any old grease, moisture and water.
I do some repairs on my mom's pt loser which I also named Jesus Chrysler. because there's always something going wrong with it. Mom "Something is wrong with my car." Me "Jesus Chrysler what's wrong with it now?"
Well folks my mom's Pt Loser (AKA Jesus Chrysler) died a few weeks after posting my original comment. . It became an organ doner and parts of it went to other PT Cruisers so that they had another chance at life.
Also, Brian mentioned he lost his 8 mm socket - I like the Kobalt sockets at Lowe's. These Kobalt sockets have a unique spline design which can grip both SAE and Metric: One socket for 5/16 in & 8 mm, one for 1/2 in & 13 mm, etc... I no longer need both SAE & Metric sockets; although I do need to get longer sockets, maybe today. nailbreak
Everything about this car is difficult to repair or work on. Changing bulbs in the front is ridiculous. Have to in some cases remove the tire!! I was a professional mechanic for over ten years at Ford and as a used car mechanic with them I never came across a more demanding car then the PT Cruiser.
Not looking forward to that timing belt. I know its coming up because the water pump is howling so may as well do the belt. I will wait as long as I can on that one though.
+John Smith Curious about your timing belt replacement. Mine broke on me while driving on the freeway and I was, of course, a good 5 hours from home. Had it replaced at a shop the tow truck driver recommended in the tiny town where I got stranded. Took them 3 days to diagnose and repair. Their initial diagnosis (camshaft position sensor) they later came back and said was wrong.. Picked up the car and drove half a block to get gas. Car ran horribly! Rough idle, sound in the engine that I'd never heard before. Went straight back to the shop and told them it wasn't running right and I didn't want to get 100 miles down the road only to break down again. Mechanic hooked up his computer to see if the car threw out any codes. I guess it didn't? Then he said everything was good to go and running as it should be. Made it home but I was a nervous wreck the whole way. So, wondering how yours has been since changing. Have you had any other problems? Is it running better? Worse? Oh, and a couple weeks after getting home, car started overheating. Took it in and the first thing the mechanic asked was if the radiator fan had been removed because the assembly was crooked and had caused the shaft to break. This same mechanic had replaced the assembly a couple years ago because the fan motor went out. Still runs like crap and check engine light came on this past weekend. AutoZone checked it and the code was for, of all things, the camshaft position sensor. Tired of all the hassle so I decided to figure out how to replace that on my own. It's running a little better since I did that. Getting ready to do spark plugs to see if that helps. Sorry so long but have been dealing with this for 3 months and so frustrated! I'd love some feedback from someone who has actually worked on a PT Cruiser and is familiar with them. Anyone else wants to chime in, feel free! Thanks!!!!

J. B. You're totally right Brother! Why go through all that HELL to just change the spark plugs only? You're already IN just change the spark plugs wires as well, and DONE!
When installing the new Spark Plugs, I cut the rubber insert in my plug socket in half, from about 1 inch to 1/2 inch long, so the socket was easier to pull off from the Spark Plug, after tightening. - Note: The rubber insert still gripped enough, so Spark Plug did not fall out. nailbreak

@@myRatchets my mom does love her PT Cruiser. & an excellent mill, btw. ppl are so jaded nowadays. when these things hit the market, they were bringing thousands over sticker. now u can buy a super clean one with 50k and a turbski for like $5k. deal of the century. the do it all PT. haul stuff and haul ass and super safe in a crash, unlike most 'sporty' cars..that can't haul ass or much cargo.. but like 2 bags of groceries.
Seems difficult? Hah! It took me 7 hours to change plugs on a 91 Infiniti q45. Much more difficult.
