World Coin Collecting For Beginners - The 101 Class On Why & How You Should Collect

  • The main focus of my personal coin collection is a world coin project, and I have really enjoyed sharing that with you (and a lot about world coins along the way) over the course of my channel. There is so much depth, specificity, and history tied up within the broader-than-the-US world coin landscape. You should definitely collect, and I have some thoughts about how you can do it and the considerations you should think about before diving in - as always, leave your thoughts in the comments.

      It is crazy. There is a reason it happened. The US was the biggest economy and had the biggest middle class and US coin collectors wanted only US coins. But it's also important to understand that for many many decades, US collectors were not even exposed to foreign coins, so it wasn't so much a matter of choice. That resulted in really expensive US coins and very inexpensive foreign coins. For most, their first exposure to US coins was when US military came back from Europe after WW2 with European coins, but because Europe was now poor and off the gold and silver standard, the coins they were exposed to were clad junk. Now, something happened that has begun to change the entire numismatic landscape, the internet. And now it's not only easy to see pictures and videos of great foreign coins, it's also easier to buy from European coin dealers. This change is going to continue as more and more younger coin collectors start buying more foreign coins. If one is very smart, there is a HUGE opportunity here. Foreign coins are still, generally, quite inexpensive and there are big bargains to be found.

      Obtaining a coin for each nation, territory, and even separatist region is a big challenge because we have to decide what to include/exclude since many places only change name like Dahomey/Benin, New Hebrides/Vanuatu, Burma/Myanmar etc. Also, many places only have tokens like Gough Island, Lundy, Andaman & Nicobar etc. There are also many places that are only a city like Danzig, Olot, Naples etc. I consider my set complete with 253 coins.

I never go buying in a pawn shop since ordinary stuff there can cost a lot (a lot of 8 worn ordinary 3rd reich coins there costed more than 50 bucks)

    Thank you for showing your fun coin set of all nations/territories. I also decided to obtain a coin representing each nation/territory. I consider my set complete with 253 coins (no tokens). The biggest challenge for people assembling this set is what to include/exclude. For example, I exclude Dahomey since Benin is the same place, just with a different name. I also exclude cities like Danzig, Olot, Naples etc. The rarest place to find a decent looking coin from, at least for me, was Navarre.

    That Botswana coin is quite gorgeous and cool shape. Enjoy your show of your world coins, and you are right you can get nice low mintage World coins at a modest price. In fact I think in the long run, US coinage will drop in its value as the US supremacy fades somewhat. I should say not all but some series are really overpriced - Morgans, some of the Walking Libertys (even though I collect WLBs)

    Nice collection! I am a generalist who collects every kind of coin, token, medal, banknote, voucher, card etc. which is not yet in my collection. I collect just for pleasure and I have no interest in collecting for financially reasons. Being an European (and more specifically Romanian), I take interest in American coins as much as any other foreign country's coins. I also focus on different types of coins paying no attention on variations of years and mints. For example, if I have a wheat cent in good condition, I take no further interest in acquiring a new wheat cent (unless it's the steel one, which I deem different from the standard copper one (note: I have both types)). It's not easy to keep such a collection (especially if you have thousands of items), and definitely impossible to acquire a complete collection in this way, but I personally find having a complete collection among the worst nightmares of a collector (having nothing more to collect, having no more the enthusiasm of finding something new). I would like to ask any American collector or numismatist if there are many there who take interest in both world coins and the story of world coins (how/if/when they circulated, how valuable it was, what one could purchase (if any) for that amount, how common/rare were such coins/banknotes etc.)? I try to figure how many differences are between collectors based on their geographical area. I know that the coins of a certain country are more valuable in that country than in the rest of the world (for example, even in Romania, you can find a small Romanian copper coin which is worth more than a bag of silver US quarters).

    • @TreasureTownCoins
      @TreasureTownCoins  2 роки тому +1

      That makes a lot of sense. I definitely enjoy that type of collecting - and would also think that Americans are most likely to pay a lot of rare U.S. coins

      i just got into numismatics and im 16 years old, i have spent 1500 on my collection so far because i can barely control myself i just love collecting items as cool as coins with their history, visual appeal, they are just all around interesting. I have 9 Ancient Roman coins from 300 BC to 350 AD which are stunning and also expensive lol, i also have over 30 US Coins of which most of them are quite expensive because i just had to get the ones that caught my eye, and i also just ordered 20 oz of silver 1 oz rounds along with 3 pounds of random assorted world coins. I plan on traveling the world in my lifetime and i cant wait for so many reasons but one big one is the fact that i can take coins from those places home with me and add them to my collection. I know it may sound like im jumping head first into this hobby and it may be overboard and i wont disagree but i know for a 100 % fact that ill never get bored of them nor regret buying them they will be passed down if i have my own kids and if not ill have them till the day i die.

    Condition Condition Condition -- there are a lot of things that can be found in junk boxes in very low condition, moderate condition, and rarely XF/AU/BU, and those XF/AUs could be the difference for resale value between having to sell it in a junk lot, or being able to actually sell it. It is very common for a pre WWI world coin in fine to be worth pennies while the XF one is worth dollars. World Junk Silver is also a fun way to get silver and have a wide variety of coins, sometimes very old and rare coins that the sheer price of silver these days has dropped to near junk levels.

      From my searches the best have been the UK pennies with King George V in F or higher, a really nice Vf/XF 1938 Australian Kangaroo penny, and one or two others in XF/low AU.
      But I keep a few that are worth probably a few cents above or less than face.
